Great work, got to imagine how fun it'd be to play on that board.

The idea of hanging it up like a picture for storage is a great idea also. Do you know how heavy it is and what wall mounting you'll be using?

Thanks, it sure adds to the excitement playing on a detailed board :)

I havent weighted the board but I estimate it 6-7 kg. I have a plaster wall with hardboard behind so I put a thick sturdy ****** through and it holds the board without issues! But even a regular plaster wall with a plug would probably do but if in doubt I would use something designed for the task since I dont want the board with all its spikes falling down on me when im underneat :D

Wow amazing work, truly inspiring. Would you mind sharing what brand/colours of flock you used?

Also, did you end up brushing on thinned PVA with a brush to seal in the flock?

For the flocks I mostely used Gale Force 9s various flocks, those little round containers with various blends. I dont recall exactly which ones but a darker tone underneat and more vibrant ones on top. Like when painting highlights but with flock!

I also might have used a little of Army Painters, and also I used some of my own DIY clump foilage which is just grinded up foam soaked in various tones of green to get some thicker moss like growths.

When finished I mixed PVA and water, 50-50 or even closer to 25-75 to get it really thin and dabbed/painted it on. Be careful when dabbing it on and dont go over the same area twice as you will scrub off the flock when its become wet as it comes loose easily. It took a few coats (and several days as drying time was horrible!) but after 3-4 times it becomes very sturdy and no flock is scrubbing off!

Great work! What product did you go with for the water effect?

I used Vallejo Still Water. Its a clear fluid that comes in a bottle and can be mixed with paint or washes to give it some color if preferred.

It does shrink a good amount when drying and requires several coats even for very thin areas, and deeper pockets will take 5-10 or even more depending on the depth.T o be honest, its only good for really thin and small applications and was kind of a pain to use here. Atm im planning a 40k table and if I will be applying water effects to it I will look into better options.

  3. So there it is, the finished board! Just need to put a nail in the wall and I have myself a painting :)

The frame came out decent but im gonna need to change or paint over the visible screws but Ill get around to that eventually, when it bothered me enough!

  4. Hey fellas, I need some input. Im working on the frame and will sand it down and smooth it out tomorrow but im trying to figure out what color to go for? And right now Im even contemplating just putting some clear coat on it and leaving it wooden.

If you have any thoughts about it please share with me, i was hoping on getting the frame completely finished this weekend!

  5. I wont label the project as finished until ive gotten the frame fitted...But its more or less finished! All painting is done and the water effects finished and all thats left to do is give it another thin coat of varnish and then put the frame on it and hang it on the wall!

I think the water came out convincing enough for a wargaming table, and while there is always something more one could add as details Im very happy with how it all came out! For being a relatively quick project I couldnt be happier :)

It looks very nice! Be sure to give it plenty of time to dry.

Do you have a quick list of all the paints you used?

Yeah, the still water is a pain as it shrinks and retracts quite a bit so ill have to give it several layers before it smooths out and covers properly. And in the little "wells" its even worse as ill have to add 2-3mm at a time until it finally reaches the top. Add too much and it dries with holes and gaps in it :/

Still water from vallejo is readily available at my local store so I went with it, if I ever do water effects of this size again I will look into two-part clear epoxy as it seems much easier to work with and dries much better. Nontheless, Ive been applying layers when applicable and right now I think it might be only one or maybe two more until its done!

Ive not kept track of what colors ive used TBH, but its almost exclusively GW paints and shades, and ive really gotten fond of their contrast paints. Its not magic but used at the right time it sure is a timesaver!

Overall I THINK the base colors are roughly as follows:

Stone: Space Wolves Grey Contrast, watered down, painted straight on top of the black/white zenithal primer.

Boards: A light grey with agrax earthshade and drybrushed with ever lighter shades of brown.

Wood: Wyldwood brown contrast paint, light brown and ushbanti bone drybrush.

Metals: Leadbelcher, typhus corrotion, ryza rust.

Hope it helps if there was anything in particular you were looking for!

  7. Theres no turning back now! 😱

It will probably take at least two layers before the water is finished, and with a drying time upwards 24 hours I need to strengthen my patience...

But I like the look and contrast it adds!

Why not just thin the pva down, and brush it gently onto the flock? It should soak into it pretty easily.

Heh, I dont know why but this never even occurred to me :D  But of course, its a brilliant idea!

  10. While waiting for my water effects to arrive Ive noticed the flocking and underscrubs on the board seem to not be fixed enough. Some of it comes off rather easy, and it feels as with usage it will shed more flocking than I will accept. I need to fix it more.

Ive restrained from using any more watered down PVA, a superb method otherwise but it will get onto the ruins and leave marks. I could mask off everything else and go nuts with it but to make it easy I was planning on getting another can of spray on varnish and just soak the damn thing in it. Focusing on the ground, what spray gets onto the ruins wont leave anything noticable.

But will this work? Anyone has experience with it?

  11. Tnx everyone! So far im very happy with the result, the board looks good and the colors stand out without looking to cartooney.

While waiting for the water effect to arrive, which might take some time with the holidays and such, ill put some weathering and blood details on it. Also gonna get a suitable frame for it when im back up and about at work.

  12. In a completely apartment ruining event ive begun flocking the board. When dry much of it will come off making the green not so vibrant as it will start to show the autumn mix underneath.

Then I will add some mud texture and some undergrowth and bushes as well as some mold/fungus on the ruins themselves before finally applying the water effect over certain areas.

So this is far from finished but just a WIP pic :D

edit: Oh, and blood of course! Gonna add lots of blood!

  13. Thinking about it...I was gonna du flocking with soil and grass to give a bit of color, but looking at the board now I wonder if it wouldnt be better to do mud and water? Almost like a swamp or very worn down ground?

ive worked a little with resin water effect previously and think i can pull it off.

    thoughts?

  14. Main painting done! There is still details and weathering to be done but I will leave that for the final touches.

Next up is flocking and ground cover which Ill have to order so gonna be a while before progress.

What do you mean ‘take over’? It’s chaos! Corpses should be there anyways. The sword holes make perfect cup holders with a good bit of work!

plus I can think of at least 5 or 6 convergence or challenge missions that use the arena set up, so it could be used fairly often.

    True, true :D

Nice work keep showing the WIP. Iv’e been toying with the idea of making two static tables my self. A fire one and and icy one. Not sure I will get around to do it anytime soon but static tables just make for a faster gameplay a thing most welcomed for Warcry.

Ya ill throw up a picture every now and then, hoping to get most of it done over the holidays and then probably be a paus before I can gather what I need for flocking etc.

Faster setup and gameplay is key for me as well, as well as a good solid terrain to play on. I toyed around with magnets at first, with a sheet of metal underneat the board. Bluetac would do the same but with less finesse I guess! But eventually I just decided I dont need it modular. So its a nice little hobby project at a scale I can really appreciate! And if it works out ill have a nice "painting" to hang on the wall as well!

Ice and fire boards sound great, especially ice! I have always wanted to build ice and snow terrain but never had a game/army to fit and also felt intimidated by the process. But who knows, maybe ill eventually do another board for Warcry ;)

Nice job! I think that an ‘arena’ would work wonders for Warcry, with fallen pillars and spike traps and such. Could be a fun experiment for myself someday!

An "arena" would be absolutely perfect for Warcry, especially with the Splintered Fang! I would make the stands and pits part of the board as well, make it look like an arena event where everything went overboard and the fighters took over the entire facility! With lots of bloody corpses modelled into the scenery 🤣

  17. I decided to build a static board for Warcry just because its fun modelling and I dont really care a lot for the terrain deck/setup.

This board will be framed when ready and made to hang on the wall as a painting, effectively removing the need for storage.

  18. I got my Iron Golems varnished this weekend so figured it was about time to post some pics!

Nothing fancy but it came out clean and neat so I decided not to wear and tear/weather them as I usually do to my minis. Kind of enjoy the shining new look!

    Welcome!

I find myself mostly playing Warcry these days myself, although I'm working on my mawtribes. It's also the first GW game I've gotten my girlfriend to play.

I find warcry is quick enough to fit in a few games at a time, and at least with my group, a bit more laid back than AoS or 40k. I often find myself opting for more "fun" options than strictly competitive.

Also I'm finding the new releases pretty exciting, the new monsters are super cool, and I can't wait to see the last warband.

I too prefer a more laid back gaming, I just dont have the time to invest in anything else. Thats why Warcry feels perfect as it limits the requirements for just about everything into a frame I can handle! And the models (most of em) is superb and fun to paint knowing I wont have to do dozens upon dozens of them!

Got my Iron golems finished this week and will begin on the untamed beasts soon enough, then move on to the terrain!

I think you’ve made the right choice! I don’t have a gaming club but I’ve been able to convince some relatives to start warbands, which I’ve never been able to do with AoS and other more rules heavy systems. A quick demo was all it took, even for non wargamers. It’s perfect for casual play, but you can still go pretty deep in the narrative and hobby side if you so choose!

    I think so!

I have gotten my core set completely assembled and the first thing to paint will be the terrain, but unlikely ill get it started on yet for a week or two. Im gonna keep it simple to not stall my interest but im looking forward to hopefully get a few first games played next weekend or the one after that :)

Welcome back @Attackmack, which faction(s) are striking your fancy? Disputes a rapid flurry of activity when the game first launched this forum has died down a bit lately so we could use some fresh blood like yourself to keep these topics going.

Release always spike interest, but warcry never caught my attention until i watched a batrep on YT the other week. And i was hooked!

The Iron Golems from the starter was initially my interest but after putting the models together I softened up a lot to The Untamed Beasts as well. Beautiful minis!

as for the other bands, The Unmade is really interesting as is the two undead warbands.

first of all i want the core box assembled and painted and ill go from there :) ihave a few plans for a tabletop setup but i dont want to start too much as once
