Oh yeah, I've seen all the entries - awesome standard! Just wondering whether you were still planning to pick any winners or if you feel like the Eclipse is done and dusted now. It's a bit weird because on the one hand picking a winner doesn't necessarily mean much and it's the participation that counts, but on the other hand it was billed as a competition and it does sort of feel like a loose end. Maybe I'm the only one who's still thinking about it!

Yes I can see that, the idea was never really for a competition in that sense but really just a way to get people making models. However there is still a plan to see if it is possible to arrange a game that involves a few of my favourite entries, but this will be later in the year I think. It's a little tricky because the 'winners' will also need to be available to come to the game, so I didn't want to announce anything until it is confirmed.

Any chance of all the entries being collected in one place, even if they're not necessarily featured front-and-centre? Would be great to see how many people entered, what they came up with, what the general standard is, etc.

I'll try to collect every entry in one place, with a few winners getting a featured gallery. Some of this will depend on the photos I receive as not all photos are going to be suitable even if the models are great. It might be possible for me to photograph some of the winners if that is proving an obstacle.

Yeah true . I mean the old world has allways had fire arms and even more exotic weapons as far back as slaves to darkness . And with the new dwarf sky pirates that are being released its even more likely . Plus witch hunter have allways had a pistol so i see this as the next step along that line .

I think new technologies work just fine in AoS. However I also think that sometimes you are at risk of making a model scan as 40k - for example there might be steam-powered armour in AoS, but if you were to use a Space Marine helmet it might just look like a 40k model. To my eye, a couple of details look a bit 40k on your otherwise excellent model, I think the gun might be an easy fix by changing just the very tip of the barrel for something simpler, without the sight on the top. A few mm of brass tube, or the end of a fantasy pistol would work great.

The Eclipse is the first event of The Dark Age of Sigmar. It is a competition to create a witch hunter to lead your Hinterlands warband, to use in Warhammer Quest or for any other purpose. You will need to make a single figure – a witch hunter – following the usual AoS28 guidelines.

The model can be of any race or any character so long as they fit the rough concept of a witch hunter. The model should have a name and a bit of background. You could enter a model that is already built, but it would be better to make a new one.

A witch hunter does not need to be a human, and does not need to wear a buckled hat. In the Age of Sigmar a witch hunter can refer to someone who fights against Chaos, monsters or the beasts of the Realms.

Although there is no real prize, winning entries will be featured in a gallery on Ex Profundis and may be invited to participate in a special game of Warhammer Quest using your hero.

  5. There are some incredible models in this thread recently, and plenty in the Facebook group as well: far more interest than I had anticipated. It is hard to keep up!

With the arrival of the new Warhammer Quest there is some great synchronicity between AoS28 and Games Workshop - you can use your converted heroes to explore the WHQ dungeon as well as to lead your Hinterlands warbands.

And for everyone that still hasn't had an idea about what to build, there is a small competition starting soon that I hope will be the final push you need to get started.

Incredibly useful post Bruticus! I will recommend it to my friends who are starting to develop an interest in AoS28. It is great to have a firm set of guidelines providing an indication to what the creators of this initiative had in mind.

I can see from some of the points you listed that my personal take on AoS28 differs a bit from the grimdark atmosphere you are trying to conceive, as one of the aspects of the new setting that I am interested in is the High Fantasy vibe which reminds me of Moorcock's Elric's Saga. It is not the impossible scale of the main AoS storyline that I am aiming to recreate with my minis though, but rather the whquest/Realm of Chaos of the late 80s which, to me at least, was an original and interesting blend of grimdark and high fantasy: flying ships and dark forests, godly beings and miserable mutants. I personally strive to pull these two aspects of the setting together as the initial fluff for the new setting went too far on the epic side of things and forgot to give a more human and grounded point of view of the action (when I see battles through the eyes of angels/demigods I tend to quickly loose interest).

I am a huge fan of Blanchitsu and the associated style of both painting and storytelling, but looking at some of Blanche's early fantasy works I can see that realism or indeed grittiness are on the background while artistic references and hints to pop culture (and High Fantasy was quite popular back then) are everywhere. I attached some of the images that served as a reference to my recent model efforts. Though I feel that the total grimness and hopelessness of some of Blanche's works fit the 40k universe perfectly (and Inq28 consequently) I would like to point out that, to me,  AoS is a peculiar setting where aspects of both high and dark fantasy cohesist (or at least this is how I envision it) and I feel that both deserve being reflected in AoS28 projects if that happen to be the intention of the author.

I would be very interested in knowing the views of other members of this community and hopefully get to see some of the artworks that inspired the great models that we've seen in the last few weeks.

    Hi Hagen,

I'm entirely in agreement with you, and I didn't think the FAQ gave the impression that high fantasy was not welcome. Maybe a new FAQ question would be useful. Personally speaking I don't have much interest in a strict low fantasy setting, the best thing about AoS is that it allows for flying ships and walking cities and anything else you can think of. I thought the FAQ helped make it clear about that, and that 'grimdark' and really means exactly what you said about the human and grounded point of view as opposed to the epic and OTT nature of the main AoS narrative.

Hey Jake, thanks for your comment. I guess you are referring to the circular detail in the middle of the breastplate? I slightly resculpted to look like a gem instead of a hole to accomodate a pipe. I thought it would have looked nice to have something contrasting right in the middle of the model, I hope that the finished result will turn out as planned... The only hose/cable I left on the model is the one which is visible on the left side of the model (to the right in the picture), under his breastplate where I hanged an archaic looking key as a symbol of the goddess Arianka (more on her in next updates). This is going to be painted as a sort of rope/rosary and again I hope it will be clearly non-40k on the finished model.

Oh yeah my mistake, I had though the knife handle and the cord with the key were related. Carry on!

Beautiful, as are all your conversions. Really seamless. I'm interested abou the hose on the torso though - to my mind these details can be overlooked or explained, but personally I would tend to cover them over with fur or bitz. If you are keeping it, how will you paint it?

Leader of my chaos warband . All the chosen are going to be slaughter priest size and the scummy underlings normal .

I think this guy is great. He looks like the sort of guy that could only exist in Age of Sigmar - but he also has loads of character and is more menacing than most of what we've seen so far from AoS.

  10. This is the leader of my Black Sloth Hell Aelves, the Spiritseer. More than the others, she has been warped by the unnatural swamp. All the aelves wear masks, partly out of shame over what has become of them: aelves are a vain and proud race and entropy and decay is anathema to them.

I don't usually use 3rd party models but the body I've used - from a D&D miniature - was so perfect for my theme that I couldn't resist.

    My only two quibbles are:

The name being uninspired and superfluous: Inq28 is called Inq28 because it's Inquisitor, played with 28mm models instead of the 54mm ones the game was originally released with - an Age of Sigmar narrative warband skirmish game would be played with standard Age of Sigmar models (pretty sure our friend scale creep has ensured 'ordinary' humans like Blood Reavers and Karic Acolytes would have to squat to reach the 28mm mark anyway), with the exception of a couple of truly terrible staff Christmas gifts about 10 years ago no WFB or AoS models have ever been sculpted in 54mm scale. If you want the project's name to evoke Inquisitor, why not just call it "AoS: Witch Hunter"? Better still come up with a totally unique name so it can exist and develop on it's own merit and not as Inquisitor with magic wands instead of guns.

My second quibble's one purely of personal preference, but the emphasis on GrimDark made my stomach churn. The 40k universe has cornered the marked for GrimDark(!) already, and does it better than any other setting going (with the possible exception of the one we live in). Instead of existing permanently in the shadow of a setting that's always going to have more skulls, barbed wire, weird flying babies and gargoyles, with the added bonuses of faux-Catholicism and automatic weapons, why not play to the strengths of other areas of GW's IPs over the years? John Blanche is an obscenely gifted artist who's drawn way more than skull-faced kneecaps over the years, take a look at some of the more fantastical artwork he and the other GW artists turned in for the earlier editions of Warhammer in eons past for a source of inspiration:

Hi, I just want to address these (valid) points quickly. I chose AoS28 because it works as a hashtag, it immediately makes the association with Inq28 perfectly clear, more so than any variation would do. But the subtitle 'The Dark Age of Sigmar' could be considered the full name. And if it helps rationalise the name then pretend the 28 means 'between 2 and 8 models'.

As for 'grimdark' I debated what word to use. But again this isn't about subtlety, it's about getting the message across clearly. A lot of people think AoS is wedded to one particular style - a bright and somewhat cartoony style on occasion. Really I'd like to introduce shades of grey, but I think if you told those people you wanted to add grimdark, they would get the idea. Also I think grimdark can mean more than just 40k specific traits, to my eye the images you posted look grimdark. The models you posted do as well, particularly the awesome prospector with warpstone hammered into his flesh!

  12. The first model in my AoS28 warband - a Wild Rider from the Black Sloth Hell: a drowned forest centered around a Realmgate to Shyish, the Realm of Death. The Aelves that live there think they are caught in a purgatory from Aelven folklore - a place where speed and grace and vitality are drained away. But the truth is more sinister than that.

With the gates of Azyr opening, emissaries have been arriving at the outskirts of the Aelven realm looking for allies. It is not yet clear what side, if any, the Aelves will take.
