In any case, I do think that painting 60+ models across 2 variations, plus a few heroes, is dreadful (for me).

Yeah I’m done with that as well.
But on the other hand. I have painted 80 clanrats, 40 stormvermin, 40 giant rats. Of with the last two were mono pose. 60 mono pose plastic dwarf warriors, 60 witch elves and sisters (mixed plastic and metal). 50 metal executioners, loved painting those for some reason.

Thinking about it I have around 45+ leadbelchers and gluttons. The only difference is the weapon. Didn’t mind painting them either.

while writing I’m kinda realising that it’s more dependent on the sculpt then the number (up to a point, of course). Looking at them I understand fyreslayers could be a pain. So many little details. While I found the metal executioners a joy.

Given that that green is meant to represent oxidized brass, rather than an army color... like I said, recipes are work-in-progress :P I think it needs a bit more blue and a bit more contrast in its application to sell the effect.

As far as tying the models together, I'm trying something new (to me) and going for a unified color palette rather than any specific 'army color'. My main rule so far is no warm colors for the clothing, just greens, blues, and greyscale. That provides some contrast with the skin and leather, and I think ties in nicely with the basing to give them a cold weather look.

Haha I realised it was oxidised metal. But it’s exactly what you described.
It’s a palette that makes them seem as a whole and that green is a nice subdued spot color.

its a really solid scheme that’s well executed.

Since you mention stuff going out of production soon: I'm pretty sure we won't be able to get all the classic Vampire Lords and the Necromancer with Hat after Soulblight Gravelords are released.

Oh that’s a good point. Il have a quick check. But death never caught my fancy so far. Except the old krell model. And some models seem great for freeguild conversions for Warcry.

Hi folks. I've started on the mammoth task of rebasing and painting the ~2500pts of Ogre Kingdoms I accumulated back around 2010. I find they're a nice break from my wash-focused Tyranids and Mechanicum. So far I've completed a unit of 6 Bulls/Gluttons; some of the recipes are still work-in-progress (particularly the skin and bone) and will be adjusted for future models.

Next up will be a unit of 4 Ironguts. After that I've got 2 Leadbelchers, 2 Mournfangs, a Tyrant, and a Butcher to reach my notional 1K list.

Nice project! And looking good. Love the subdued green that ties them together as well.

  6. I need 12 euro more for free shipping.

what is that one paint you can’t live without?
that one character model that’s just brilliant to paint?
That little thing nobody things about but is always useful or fun?
that one kit you suspect might be going out of production soon?

yeah I know I can just buy another Warcry warband for later but I have enough projects to paint that are already not coming out of the box any time soon.

Big hair, big ****** and not too butch. Now that's how you sculpt a female model in warhammer. Glad to see GW still have it after their recent efforts, I.e. stormcast and darkoath .

I do agree with it working on the old school, Victorian, baroque, corset bound* vampire look.

But I found the recent female sculpts to be so refreshing, badass and awesome.

this model was the catalyst into stormcast for me. I actually have three  now. two saved for conversions, one for the joy of painting.

and that Darkoath war queen 😍

she haunts my dreams since release, and I’m still not sure if they are nightmares or not.  Ordering that one as painting project at some point fo sho

And going purely on the usual with Underworlds - a new 'Hero' sculpt and alternative sculpts for various other units - I'm calling it's looking increasingly likely for foot non-hero vampires in Gravelords.

This is assuming, however, this is not another Swordmaster or Slaaneshi Spear Mortal situation where the Vampire is purely for flavour for the foreseeable future.

Or like the kurnothi. And the other one limited to quest like some of those sculpts.
    Still exciting times 😄

They take the pics with tele lenses, so perspective gets totally flattened. Once you get the minis in your hands everything makes sense, but most pictures look weird.

I get the effect from the lenses. Buillding up a product video portfolio as a corona proof part of my business. But yeah could be part of it.
But I like the photos, not the models, in the same article.

but if you look at the hair. There is so little contrast there. Maybe someone lifted the shadow too much in post?
    same with the face.

But looking at it again. Maybe it’s more that it’s such a sober design.

But you’re right. Seeing a model in the flesh can make or break a model.

That means they will all share some core similar elements to deal with similar problems

Oh I understand.  But this is what I would be against.
ironjawz should not have the same core similar elements as kharadron overlords to deal with the same problems.
they should find different solutions within their options.

so for example an occupied objective requires a different solution for both. Which is interesting and usually thematic.

I don’t know. But I always loved that even the main poster boy army didn’t have acces to all tools. Not a lot of bodies, no magic, limited mobility after the initial ambush. Now they have magic, multiple ways of redeploying during the battle, acces to +3 to charge. The only thing they still don’t have is access to a lot of bodies. (Outside of allying them in)

giving one aelf faction 10 different close combat glass cannon style models

Which is why I voted for a small number of warscrolls ;)

Shouldn't we talk about models, not warscrolls?

I thought about that as well.
the main reason is that while some armies have a lot of dual kits, others don’t  so you get a skewed comparison.

The second reason I was more curious about warscrolls is because for some boxes it’s just a weapon swap. For others it’s a different role. Occasionally a model is either even a ranged unit or a melee unit.  (Khinerai, hearthguard, melusai, stonehorn, ironbreakers. Just top of my mind)

just to explain the reasoning behind the choice. But I get where you are coming from.

However I would say that each army does best when it can offer a full range of options (cavalry - infantry - ranged infantry - ranged cavalry - artillery - named and generic heroes - monsters/beasts/machines etc...) with multiple build options ranging from niche armies that spam a few units through to combined arms forces.

I think we might have had this conversation before.

It’s such a core difference in how we experience. I really disagree. For me an army that has acces to everything becomes bland. give an army a theme and stick with it, and bring variety through the rules (like FEC was used as an example earlier).
but don’t give, for example, ironjawz artillery and  ranged units and ranged cavalry. Don’t make them lose their flavour of a combat army.

but no right or wrong. Just taste I think.
    But this is one

Sometimes they'll release something, like fyreslayers, that one cannot help but wonder if it won't be killed without a word of warning like Chaos Dwarves.

I think fyreslayers are save. It’s absolutely no garuantee of course. But they are produced by GW proper, not their sister in law company that they are reorganising.
its proper plastic, relatively new molds, and a much seen army over the last few years 😁

the no warning thing is annoying I agree.

lease cycles are erratic and show what they believe they can push more, and they seem to "squat" things more frequently. Either hard squat (Chaos Dwarves), or soft squat (fyreslayers getting absolutely no love).

How did you feel about the removals surrounding the cities release?
I felt it sucked at the time. I went from 3k dwarfs to only 1300 pts. Because the new irondrakes etc were released after I went to uni and didn’t collect during that time.
so many cool sculpts lost. :(

On the other hand I do get it. If those models would have not place anymore, they shouldn’t be in the game. And if they’re not in the game they shouldn’t be sold.
can you imagine the mess cities would be if all those models would need to be in there.

but dang, I would instabuy some of those sculpts. Just for alternative models in Warcry. Like the witch hunter and the priests 😍

for the Great Mawpot, but I realised I made an assumption for this thread that we were just talking about units, and not scenery, battalions, endless spells and so on even though they also have warscrolls.

Good point. Didn’t think about that either. In my mind it was without as well.

just a proper little band of Ogors and their beasts trying to stay ahead of the snowstorm and find things to eat.

Yeah sure, yeah. That’s how people in the mortal realms describe them 😂

But what is more important is that a battletome has the tool to make different lists. FEC for example don't have many warscrolls, but can focus on a single aspect of their army and make different lists as result.

    Excellent point.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. I've always felt Mawtribes offered an unusually high number of solid choices.

(Even though the Ogor armies I've run use a maximum of 4 warscrolls, haha.)

Really? You must be on the beastclaw side then?
I almost always start with either the goremand or butchers battalion. That’s 4 warscrolls right there for a general list.

although as often go with a theme and then it’s going to be a less. But that’s a conscious choice. Currently trying to get a Frostlord into a underguts list. And I’m leaning more and more to 2 big units of leadbelchers, 2 thundertusks, Frostlord. But I’ll doubt it will ever move beyond the pixels on TTS 😂

Are there battletomes out there that people feel realistically present significantly more than 15 good unit choices? Not a trick question, I'm genuinely curious.

Ogors are the only one for me. That book is super well done. Partly because it has no game breaking faction rules that several units take more advantage of then others (like Slaanesh depravity forces you into multiple keepers even if the ability is thematic)

all in all there are 5 warscrolls that have no either good role or fulfil the same role as another in the army IMO. Which still leaves 16 warscrolls. And you don’t auto lose for bringing the other 5 😂
