  1. Played against a Praetorians army yesterday with my Petrifex Elite.

Won the objective game but he did not lose a single unit. I did because I sacrificed my riders and my liege to delay him - which worked out perfectly.

So as I already suspected, a Praetorians army with Katakros is just as hard to kill as Petrifex while easily out CPing any other Legion and having pretty solid debuffs.

In the end Arkhan won me the game by being mobile and using protection of nagash perfectly to grab an objective on a far, unguarded side of the board.

I will probably stick to Petrifex because I prefer Arkhan over Katakros but I can imagine competitive Praetorians builds with Katakros, Zandtos and some Crawlers.

And you've gone for almost exactly the same scheme as me (I've used normal bone as my secondary colour  😉 )

Nice paintjob, the bases look great!

And you‘ve gone for almost exactly the same scheme as everyone painting petrifex elite 👍🏻

Thinking about starting this army next year after my Nighthaunts. Reading their battletome it looks like the Null-Myriad looks ironically enough to be a nice counter to Nagash/Arkhan lists, with the 5+ (2+ with a CP) save against spells and the Baleful Blade. Anyone thought about using this allegiance ?

Got triggered by the fact that its Arkhan‘s personal Legion, but i dont like the color scheme and the trait/ca. Its OP in some very rare match ups, ok in most match ups and completely useless in others. While the artifact is easily the best out of all the sub-factions its not enough to make we want to play it. I‘d rather write my own background and use petrifex ruleswise on the table

Anyone have new thoughts on Immortis after some potential playtime? I recall there being some comparison discussion previously between them and Stalkers for damage\defense but.. I can't shake the idea of running 1x6 of them in a particular list I'm theory-crafting.

Depending on your RDP availability and how dedicated you are to obliterating a unit, you could be looking at getting 18 Halberd attacks on 2(rr1's)\3\-3\2 damage and another 18 Shield attacks on 3(rr1's)\3\-1\1 damage with a chance at MW's... and spend another RDP to hit with the Shields again. I dunno, I just feel we may be sleeping on them in certain setups as Petrifex is giving them the above and a 2+ save on top of still being an additional FNP to a Hero if needed. Curious on others thoughts as the simple mathhammer damage seems great. And yeah, I suppose you could just take more Guard and get a similar effect, but I'm sure someone could break down that comparison further.

The only problem I have with everything except the Crawlers is they need to get to combat to become effective while the Crawler does its damage from t1 and the core is imo mostly set on mortek and deathriders.

From that perspective Immortis are the only other unit that can compete as they prevent your heroes from dying to alphastrike lists t1. Someone mentioned that its not worth 200 points to keep a boneshaper alive when you just could have brought another one but its worth to keep Arkhan, your Liege and your Soulmason with +1 wound artifact alive.

Edit. Ok and probably the Harvester in the same manner as they can keep Mortek Guard alive i guess, but then again why wouldnt you just kill the Harvester first when its just a 10 wound model.

I take it you took spears over swords on your deathriders?

I took 1 unit with spears to make use of retreat and charge from the battalion (-1 rend from petrifex is sufficient) and 1 unit with swords to operate on their own or to screen so i can get a countercharge. Or to break really defensive units.

And mostly because of optics, wanted to have both.

You still have the sentence "unmodified" in front. It just changes from 6 to 5 or better but still unmodified

Yeah i just double checked it. Lots of new rules to learn, its quite unusual since its either worded unmodified 6 or X+ in other rules where + (or higher) means it can be modified.

What a shame, no 2+ exploding hits for spear kavalos riders then, but 4+ will suffice.

Oh, I see the reason for wrapping, just not how it actually plays out on the table.

You basically deny charges on key targets or make it so that if they charge they get surrounded and killed for that.

And as mentioned above it doesnt keep you from moving as you just need a U-form wide enough for the model you want to wrap to just fit.

    Core mechanic imo

How many games? Of those, how many are based on holding multiple objectives?

They are all kinda based on holding multiple objectives but i dont know if I want to discuss deeper tactics with someone who doesnt see the obvious reason behind bubblewrapping things 😛

Joke aside, I need more practice games but so far the list performed „rock solid“ hehe, you know because of petrifex.. oh I think i‘m done for today xD

They do seem pretty strong! I picked up five, thinking about getting more if I like them after using them soon.

What i'm thinking of running is

    Arkhan
    Liege Kavalos
    Soulmason

    20 mortek guard
    20 mortek guard
    5 deathriders

    Harvester
    Harvester
    Crawler

Haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but I imagine it'll be pretty alright.

I dont know about the Harvesters tbh, are they really as good as they look on paper?

I did not lose enough Mortek Guards so far to feel that i need the resurrection and i feel like the Crawlers really help against those synergy pieces

How're you liking the kavalos in that list?

tbh they are probably the best unit in the book and i‘ve considered playing 2x 10, but i didnt like the aesthetics of whats left after that.

Even 5 of them were enough to contest objectices on weaker flanks and they are so incredibly fast

Anyone who wanna guess what top table lists are gonna be like? 😊

I‘m gonna play this list in a local tournament soon:

    Petrifex

    Arkhan

    Liege Kavalos, General, Godbone

    Soulmason, Gothizzar Cartouche

    30 Mortek Guard

    2x5 Kavalos

    2 Mortek Crawler

    Kavalos Battalion

    Bone Tithe Shrieker

100% winrate so far, with the Mortek Crawler being the most efficient so far (tried the same core list but with morghasts/ immortis guard before)

Traits: Not important as you will be taking a legion, but maybe in a 1k game there would be a case for choosing trait and relic. If so then trait 1. Ancient Knowledge to get 1 more discipline point per round, or 3. Dark Acolyte to become a wizard (for a liege).

Artefacts: My number 1 choice is Helm of the Ordanied for a Liege Kavalos, this gives 12" +1 hit bubble which is crazy good. For the wizards it is a bit more so so, but I'd say the soulmason 9" +1 wound bubble is decent as well as +2 to cast until you get a natural 10+ cast roll. Shoutout to the Soulreapers luminscythe as well, which is both a -1 to be hit on the bearer as well as +1 cast, this is the only unconditional + to cast we got.

Spells: I wont say anything is just "best", but I do feel that both of the reinforcement spells are more nice to haves and situational, especially the shield one as it only gives a 5+ against mortal wounds. I will say that drain vitality is an incredibly nice buff, and if I had to only chose 1 per game, that would probably be my go to spell, as it counters some of the mot dangerous mechanics, which is exploding hits (look at the Slaanesh players face when he has to reroll his keepers 2 6's for claw hits and rejoice), and also mortal wound reflects on 6's to save. Protection of Nagash is a very cool spell for Nagash and Arkhan, but not really anything else I think.

Legions: This should be clear by now right? Petrifex is waaayyyy above everything else, it has the best of everything. Praetorians and Ivory host are pointless and terrible. Stalliarch lords, null myriad and crematorium are pretty equal in different niches, decent and probably more in line with what legions should be, but they are all completely outdone by petrifex.

Endless spells: If you buy the box you get all 3 anyway, but with the few sources of + to cast and the -1 penalty with an endless spell in place, I prefer the screamer, with only 5+ to cast and a 12" +1 to hit bubble. The predator is cool, but really annoying to use at the right time, it has extreme short range to cast (wholly within 6") and moves random (2d6), you will probably not get many good situations to use this in, and when you do, it is very unreliable to even cast.

Units: If you are on a budget and looking for an all comers list to start with, I would focus on Mortek Guard and some Kavalos. Something like a Liege Kavalos, Mortisan Soulmason, a box of Mortek guard and a box of Kavalos as the core is a good purchase, add a box of stalkers or a harvester for a nice little 1k force to play vanguard games or meeting engagements.

After that add more Mortek guard and possibly Kavalos, a Boneshaper and either stalkers or harvester depending on what you already got.

+1 on that, though I‘d rate praetorians equally strong to petrifex if you are taking Katakros. +1 to hit / save almost across the board combined with his other abilities will probably win you as many games as an additional rend as a CA will.

Then again I think Arkhan > Katakros and i dont want to spend 860 points on 2 leaders, so I prefer petrifex.

How did you find the morghasts?

I played the Archai lately and i find them pretty strong. Very mobile and good output/ defense. They can destroy a weak flank on their own by turn 2. Even their pointscosts are absolutely justified, cant understand why people would say otherwise.

I personally switched to Immoris though for better hero protection. For me Stalkers are the most bland out of the 3, because all they do is done by everything else in the army, just less efficient but with more versatility.

With every passing day it becomes more and more clear that Petrifex is best by so much that it breaks the whole faction.

Simply put, petrifex versions of units are so much better than the other legion or non legion versions of those same units that they cannot justifiably be played at the same points cost.  For each and every unit, either the petrifex version is underpriced by 20 points or more, or else the non petrifex version is overpriced by the same amount.

They need a nerf.  Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't see one in the first faq.  Then again, I'm surprised they made it through testing as is to begin with.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, but who are you to judge whats undercosted or needs a nerf? Some random guy on the internet thinking he knows more about the game than anyone else.

This is coming from some other random guy on the internet so take it with a grain of salt.

I think OBR, even played as petrifex elite is a perfectly balanced army. I had 2 relatively easy games against a competitive army and 2 absolutely close games against a less competitive list, playing the same petrifex list against both.

It‘s just a very tanky legion that plays the objective game pretty safe. Nothing wrong with it when you are still outnumbered most of the time.

He's also better in a praetorian army, where you can use his wound reroll ca on other units, not just himself.  Not super relevant right now when petrifex is best by a country mile, but if petrifex gets the nerf bat in the future, then praetorians may get more popular.

I enjoy petrifex elite very much ruleswise. Good saves and potentially high rend are the things i like the most in AoS so i am pretty happy they put both into one legion. Made the choice easy.

For everyone being concerned about their new army „getting a bad reputation“ - chill.

I just recently played against a „tripple bloodthirster all fight first list“ and if it wasnt for petrifexes‘ rerollable +1 save i would have lost for sure because they just would have murdered my 30 Mortek Guards easily.

There will always be competitive (always good) and situational choices in sub-factions. Take Fyreslayers for example. I have never seen a different lodge than Vostarg or Hermdar on the table.

For OBR it will be praetorians (Katakros/Zandtos) or petrifex. If you want to be special play a different legion or create your own but if you want to bring the strongest possible list decide between those two and have fun.
