You can have good flavor with simple mechanics too, but its important if you have complexity for that complexity to actually matter and contribute something to the army. Gutrippaz Skareshields, and the Swampcalla shaman's poisons and elixirs are perfect examples of bad complexity.

My issue with the nurgle one is that it seems excessively wordy for how impactful it is. I imagine the number of disease counters will tie into their summoning somehow too, at which point maybe there's enough justification for it?

IMO I'd have rather seen the mechanic just keep track of if something is diseased or not.

high complexity, low impact is the worst quadrant

This is from yesterday.  And judging by the complication to flavor to power analysis of this rule I expect individual khorne models will have to track how many skull tokens they have (1 per enemy model slain by that model regardless of points or wounds etc) and once they have 8 they'll get +1 to hit for the last turn of the game because let's be honest it took 4 turns to activate this.

Just like the Custodes preview I couldn't wrap my head around on first reading. Interesting but intuitive is a delicate balancing act, so I can't complain if GW struggles a bit.
I liked Nurgle's Cycle, Tzeentch's Destiny Dice, Gitz' moon (needs tweaking though), OBR's system, and CoS's thematic diversity. So it isn't like they can't dial in to the right wavelength for faction abilities and I will be never pleased.

I also dislike them gutting fun warscrolls but that's another topic of discussion.

How many times do they need to rewrite the bone man's warscroll? They've had plenty of chances. How about rewriting some smaller warscrolls for units that really need it.

Like Morathi's spear, it is a tradition. Expect his rules to change once again with a new OBR book.

  4. between the eldar focus and gradual corruption of the engine art, safe to say playing up the eldar vs csm box might be the clear theme of the calendar
today's might be a character weapon, unit special weapon, or bike riders weapon

maybe if we're lucky it might be a 10/10/4 split of eldar/csm/aos and there is something relevant to here at the end

That's kind of just an after-the-fact paintjob, isn't it? It's better in the sense that it's more widely usable than e.g. a christmas-themed version of the Red Gobbo but feels they just picked an alt-sculpt off the shelf and told the 'eavy metal crew to jolly it up.

Yeah, it really feels like another promo model, repainted red+green to fill in for a holiday mini

jesus why are even the new eldar sculpts so mogged in comparison with other new releases? Those banshees look like from 2010s (imo) and Lelith Hesperax is a prime example what happens when you cannot sculpt and paint nonhuman nonmale physique. Hobbit feet Lelith.

The banshees do look kind of... dated on release yeah.
Lelith looks bad due to GW's bizarre style of painting faces as if they were carved from rock. Just look at this paintjob I found elsewhere that definitely isn't out of reach for most people.

Finished Lelith Hesperax, the Knife party enthusiast of the 40k universe. Wasn't expecting the model to be this tough to paint... : r/minipainting

You'll laugh a lot less when theses RE end up being Squats 😄

This Christmas calendar is fun and all and I'm happy aswell for Craftworlders(maybe Ynnaris?) and this release is a long overdue. But if it's all Eldar rumor engine I'll be a "little" disapointed...especially for AoS.

It'll be frankly kind of dull for most people if it literally is 24 or whatever days of eldar gun/dangly-bits quarter pics

Given the nature of the times we live in, and the cascading complications businesses like GW face with shipping, supply, and releases, that's the only kind of roadmap they would be likely to hazard.

Even so, it took months for them to release the SCE and Kruelboyz models after AoS 3.0 was announced, and even longer to release the dragon models. In all probability, GW likely just doesn't want to risk committing to anything because the rug has been pulled out from under their plans too frequently in such a short amount of time already

By the looks of things AoS is still struggling to get back on track, whereas 40k seems to have gotten some traction going.

40k is skipping right along from long awaited Ork update and fan-loved BTs update straight to an also very long awaited Eldar update and Chaos wave. Some traction is an understatement, firing on all cylinders if you ask me. World Eaters and Squats sometime in the future.
Part of what makes the AoS currently look anemic is that 40k is firing on all cylinders.

Apparently the leaker king is also the one giving the rumor stuff to the Eldar discord as well so shrug

Man, can't we get some of that rumour mongering here. Here we are stuck trying to divine 4chan posts.
Between Eldar and chaos space marines, rumours albeit very concrete, it sure feels at the moment 40k is sucking up all the oxygen.

  10. Hm... Giving it thought.

While space marines may all be space marines to me, Grey Knights, Blood Angels, Death Guard, and Chaos Space Marines for example are very distinct, have been distinct for a long time and their fanbases absolutely distinct and devoted. So all the power armour spam works because people like space marines a lot and the separate flavours people will die on a hill for.
Stormcast are not the space marines GW would like them to be, nor do they have the flavours established either, only recently was there a non-Hammers mini released and the Stormhosts aren't as fuel for fanbase as space marine chapters.

Subsequently, Stormcast can't mimic space marine volume remotely. There has been an utter glut of releases for them in such a short while that they've probably achieved a degree of saturation. I've got loads of Stormcast for instance, bunch of Liberators, Lord Relictor, Lord Arcanum and Incantor, 2500pts maybe of Stormcast altogether. Dominion doesn't really appeal since I don't want another stack of battleline, albeit better looking, or another Relictor or standard caster wizard. I'd rather pick up a few kits of interest, like maybe Annihilators/dragons/Yndrasta separately then an entire box. I don't think I'm alone in this situation, if you've already got Stormcast more redundant units aren't appealing. There is just too much stuff doing the same thing around and they aren't Primaris, a reboot of a massively popular line 30+ years in age, so they can't match it.

It's a good starter for newbies and Thunderstrike look nice, but there is just too much Stormcast around in such a small timespan that it's hard to want to pick up a boxset of dudes I already (basically) have. I'd rather buy a few new kits of note.

Long time no see, TGA :D

I SWEAR I read a rumor* a few days ago (here ?) saying the next dual boxed set for AOS would be Idoneth vs Fyreslayxers (that much we already heard), with one new Hero each side : an Idoneth Lady with the two swords in the back like the recent RE, and a new Fyrelsayers Hero with some kind of magmapike.

    ... That would fit today's RE ...

P.-S. ; I'm sad we don't have more Chorf rumors, but at least the Warcry Red Harvest set indeed had new Chaos scenery made by those Hashut-worshipping duardin ;)

*EDIT : yep, a rumor passed on by @Indecisive on page 3113. It indeed seems plausible...

A wait and see scenario. I like to collate 4chan rumours of promise since it is the perfect place to leak something sneakily, anonymous and a dozen other people making wishlist leaks makes it real easy to leak on the sly.

I just cant believe during the height of Endless Spells that the Fist/Foot of Gork/Mork never got models. They are probably the most iconic spells in any Warhammer medium!!

I prefer Faction scenery myself and do hope they continue.

Perplexing OWC got neither spells nor terrain.
Lumineth were the last to get terrain I think. Seems like they might have scuppered them due to problems relating to China as mentioned before. We might see them return if they make them in-house.

  13. There are also the comically obvious repurposed LoN endless spells that came with Forbidden Power.
Endless spells are a neat concept, they really phoned in rules for many.

Plus, they stretched the other gimmick out, empowered/twist endless spells with CoS, Seraphon, and now Nurgle soon.

  14. It's certainly annoying that literally every chaos faction except Nurgle got endless spells, even Khorne, why the singular exemption. Sure seems like they gave up on them at some undefined point. Seraphon were skipped over but DoK got the last of them somehow early this year.
Lumineth got them with battletome 1.0 I think, destruction almost entirely skipped over sans Gitz.

Exactly. Fyreslayers need at least 2 more unit types and a Siege Engine alongside a new Monster.

Funnily enough, there was a second half to those leaks from earlier. And artillery was mentioned.
I thought it was unlikely and wanted to riff about Lotann but for everyone's sake I'll post it too.

    Quote

    >Fyreslayers are getting some new units including artillery!
    >But they're later in the year with another battletome before them

    >Malerion's aelves are planned for Nov, but could get pushed back to Jan-Feb 2023
    >They're mainly fast, deadly heavy infantry that can pop out of nowhere, lots of razors
    >picture the Tenebrael Shard and an Executioner mixed together, for an example

And a link for those who want a timestamp.

  16. Falling back to the theme of 4chan "leaks" I found one that sounded plausible.
Here is a snippet of it to focus a bit:

    Quote

    >Idoneth vs Fyreslayers box in April (planned)
    >Idoneth get a "champion" she is infantry, has a shield, and dual falchions
    >Fyreslayers get a "thane-temple guard" Priest Hero with a magmapike

    >Idoneth book afterwards, Tide rules are gone because they're too rigid; replaced with new "Flowing" mechanic
    >No endless spells or new units beside the above, Lotann gets slight buff but still not worth it

AoS flipping to a dull battletome spam release with minimal models? Sounds likely, 40k from rumours has a big year coming.
Idoneth get no endless spells (despite DoK getting them) and just a single, crabless mini? I can see that.
Lotann still bad? Above all, this specific nugget is the most likeliest of all things that makes me want to believe it.
