  1. I need some help..i started with the soulblight army just because i have warhammer cursed city and painted all models:) so now i bought a few additional units and models but would really love to bring a couple of the wq models back to the table without taking“all“. Anyone who has an estimate for each member of that big group of 755 points? Its just for games with friends and you guys might have enough experience to make an estimate

  2. If they add another layer of rules (unit, subfaction, faction, spells, items, terrain already do exist) it will get more complicated and you need to memorise even more possible modifiers and actions.
but I assume they just couldnt rewrite 1000 warscroll cards or 30 battletomes to reduce that complexity. Easier to just add another generic layer on top:/

  3. For me the rules of the core book are fine the way they are.

The rules of the units on the other hand are not.

If you are a player who plays once a month its nearly impossible to remember all the special buffs, rerolls, special circumstances where you get a bonus or malus etc. Even with exce lists aos reminder sheets , warscroll cards etc most of the time you dont play or make tactical descisions or even roll dice. Instead you have to fly through your documentations or search desperately within your memory for the „one special rule which might give a +1 on save but only if charged or was it just rerolls if you roll a one or was there a ignore rend -1 or did i have a second save but only against missles?“ or do I stand close to a wood which gives -1 to shooting? Are damn too late  we already do save rules maybe next time but good to know that my opponent forgot that when he throws a 6 on to hit he scores two hits and if the player of the unit makes 10 squats he makes three..

thats where I see AOS not casual player friendly and not very transparent for anybody. Here is where they would have to streamline the effects  and in general solve more by using faction specific rules (or even extent the core rules like they want to do „all units with keywords monaters can do the following“

you could do the same by introducing new keywords for a specific role (warmachines/cavalary etc) and pimp them a little more faction specific by adding some buff to this type of unit   But you stay away from adding 1000 rules to each unit and focus on keywords and stats instead

  4. I think AOS is quite simpel in terms of basic rule set. But as easy as the basic rules are the dozens of special abilities, buffs rerolls etc make the game tough to master. In the early days you could quickly play different armies as only equipment and statistics were changing. Nowadays you have to use AOS reminders for you army to have any chance at all to remember everything. At least as long as you play just a game per month and like to try out several armies.

  5. Here are some examples. Definetely nothing to win a painting contest with but i think and most people  agree makes  the game 10 times more immersiv as playing with grey plastic or even with just base coloring them with normal colors. Even if you look closer (above from the battlefield player perpective) I am still proud and dont think i need to hide my guys or feel ashamed. And btw:it still takes  many hours to complete them even with contrast

  6. I have to agree. I have now painted 1500 pts of ogors/sylvaneth/fyreslayers/kharadron/daughters/ossiarch nearly exclusively with contrast except for metallics and i love it. i always had a hard time highlighting thin lines as my hands are not<calm>enough and if i tried often it ruined stuff. Therefore before contrast i painted a couple of armies with a similar technique using lahmian medium.

  7. If you have the Aether Wars start set, what would be the next step to build an army around that force?  When I start a new army i prefer to have as many different units and models as possible (and still make a reasonable list) and i hate to paint too many models from one kind.:)

  8. DaMn it. i started lasr november with soul wars..one year later:

    3000 pts Stormcast

    2000 pts nighthaunt

    2000 pts Seraphon

    1500 pts Sylvaneth

    1500 pts Idoneth

all painted so i wanted to take it slow.. and concentrate on

    daughters of khaine

    kharadon overlords and fyreslayers

now feast of bones added two more armies i love....

now chaos std for my warcry...its enough:)

  9. I actually dont see the price tag the issue but the amount of time you have to build and paint. Even with contrast if you want to play with or display miniatures in tabletop quality ,time is the limiting factor per customer. I could purchase hundreds of miniatures. But for what use? I would never get them done. I hate playing with grey stuff(never do) because if the game is more important than the look and feel of real achievement/art than i could really just play a computer game

  10. Simple question regarding the sylvaneth wood models: do you really need to buy these plastic models from gw or is it sufficient to make a wood with general trees from normal tabletop terrain stuff in the same size which in the end will look more realistic  and fit besser to other terrain?

  11. I really like slayers.  But do you think GW will release 1 or 2 different kind of units for this army in the near future (max 2 years?)? I am looking for army nr. 7 and for a 1000 pts list the number of different miniatures is ok but going for the full 2000....and buying 10 packs of hearthguard..i dunno

Just dropping my 2c after a week or so of contrast painting. They are absolutely brilliant. I haven't had this much FUN with painting since I started airbrushing. I'm getting so much stuff done that would have taken me ages to finish with conventional methods (or to be frank, would probably have remained unpainted).

Now I'm not a beginner painter by any means, I'd probably rate myself in the late intermediate stage (and to be honest I just don't have the time nor patience to push into advanced territory). But I just wanted to put it out there that contrast paint jobs do not "need" additional highlights and shades to qualify as passable playing figures.

I'm adding a couple shots here to illustrate my point. These are pure contrast paint jobs (one coat) over a zenithal prime. Only things layered are the dots on some of the mushrooms, otherwise it's just Contrast Magic (tm).

Edit: Seems the forum scales these down quite a bit, here are the links for bigger versions (should they work): Picture 1 & Picture 2

I absolutely agree. I am really just a simple painter and at best between beginner and intermediate skill level but the results are awesome ( from my point of view).  Its easier to paint control and faster as well and easier on the brush too.  Here my latest examples:

  13. I think the problems of recurring and monotone army lists do not lie on the game rules but on the nature of some players to try to win no matter the cost cost and therefore exploit all posibilities even if it leads to stupid lists.

Its a hobby not a tournament. building, painting, stories and some simple game mechanics come together to form a cool gaming experience. Otherwise i can play chess;) as aos is more based on luck of your dice than on strategic descisions;)
