  1. I wasn't a huge fan of battle tactics before but I at least prefer what they're doing in 4th than what they did in 3rd.

I'm happy that the faction specific tactics are gone and can't be used as freebies to 'balance' struggling battletomes, and pleased that they've resisted making buckets of universal ones so I can learn them easily. I think it's good that they're all going to be in the annual General's Handbook and they can shake them up there if needed, and I kinda like that you can't pick a battle tactic if you choose to take the double turn.

The Generalโ€™s Handbook 2024-25ย also includes two extra battle tactics for each Grand Alliance, alongside the Honour Guard Season Rule. These provide some extra flexibility outside of universal battle tactics, and replace faction-specific battle tactics.

Since all battle tactics are now part of the annual Generalโ€™s Handbook, the Warhammer Studio will have more opportunities to balance battle tactics and ensure a fair playing field as the edition progresses.ย

Btw: Why am I the only optimistic one here? I hate goody two-shoes and if magic sucks, my army will get hit the hardest! ๐Ÿ˜‚

From what I've seen so far I'm now more excited for 4th edition than any previous edition of AoS ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

The problem with Ironjawz and Kruleboyz was not Big Waaagh. Most of the time of the edition Big Waaagh was worse than any of the three, and only when Magic was good and the new tรกctics come they become good.

    ย

Without Big Waaagh the results of Ironjawz and Krule would be the same. You are looking a tree and you don't see the forest behind

I didn't say Big Waaagh was always necessarily better than the others at all times, it suffered too before yes.ย  It's probably more difficult to balance what's basically multiple very different Orruk factions in the same tome at the same time, and I hope that if they separate them into their own tomes they'll be able to put more thought and flavour into them individually. Sorry if I'm missing the trees or whatever.

The problem is that as has been pointed out there are presumably people who have bought painted and played exclusively with Big Waagh. Suddenly their army is gone and they're left with two half armies.ย

One possible bright side is that Nagash has different warscrolls for different factions.ย

One way of fixing the balance issue is having an ironjawz version of a scroll and a big waagh version of a scroll which can be pointed differently.ย

Unfortunate for those guys if turning them into two armies isn't possible, hopefully they'll be able to ally them at the very least.

I really want to see Kruleboyz in particular greatly expanded this edition as to me they feel like half an army as it is.

  7. I like that the whole spell lore is available to my wizards with manifestations on top, and while I don't have any priests they sound pretty thematic.

Hoping the lack of Orruk Warclans keyword means Ironjawz and Kruleboyz get their own dedicated battletomes in 4th edition and it's not just an index thing. I don't think they did a good job with balancing them and Big Waaagh at the same time.

  8. I think Ogors are 'safe' but probably going to get a big update so I personally wouldn't buy them right now. I reckon the main studio has plans for them in AoS as they're not one of the factions in The Old World receiving ongoing support from the specialist team.

I'd say Orruk Warclans are 'very safe' with Bonesplitterz gone. They're among the more popular factions, and I doubt GW will ever entirely remove Orcs from a flagship fantasy game. They're also now fully AoS models and have next to no bloat in the range.

This is a whole other topic unto itself. Plenty of kits have giant rocks, or designed ground, etc that jack up the price or could have definitely been used for other options. The example I'll use is the beast skewer kill bow. A huge chunk of the sprue is a piece of land. This could have definitely been a plethora of other options as not to have exact copies of kits if running multiples. Hell, it could even been a second weapon type like a giant net launcher or something but nope, ground.ย

    Alternative heads would've been nice!

With Bonesplitterz going I'm even more in favour of Ironjawz and Kruleboyz getting their own battletomes. I'd make Kruleboyz a proper sneaky ambusher faction now that Beasts of Chaos are being squatted, and expand them with some light cav and Gnashtoof hunting packs for example.

I think GW has struggled to balance Ironjawz, Kruleboyz and Big Waaagh in 3rd edition so I'd rather see them try to balance both Orruk factions individually and give them both more flavour without having to worry about the impact on Big Waaagh any more. I still think the model designs clash visually on the tabletop too.

I wouldn't be surprised though if GW integrates them further in a new Orruk Warclans battletome.

  11. The new warscroll layout looks like a great improvement IMO, for me the phase colours on the abilities will be really handy for remembering which abilities are available to me in each phase. The new Nagash one is much cleaner than the old wall of text lol.

This screams people not talking to people. Iโ€™d say if somebody knew about what was going on, they wouldnโ€™t have answered like that as it would make them look silly and bad. They would have answered saying probably or some other non committal answer.ย

Yeah that's what I'd guess happened too.

Seeing ranges culled or pruned always makes me think twice about starting new armies TBH, and I have sympathy with anyone into those factions feeling upset today.

Think I'll just stick with my Ironjawz for the foreseeable future. I've already put working on my Kruleboyz on ice (outside of buying the recent Zagnog release) as they feel a bit half-finished as a faction to me. I will of course return to them if they get another wave with cavalryย :P

  13. The one that genuinely surprises me is the Sacrosanct Chamber going. I know there's been a lot of Stormcast stuff with more on the way, but I can't say I expected a whole Chamber to be cut and so soon after it was released.

  14. RIP BoC and Bonesplitters, seemed like there were signs of this coming for a while.

With Savage Orcs not being in the Orcs and Goblins Tribes list (just some optional upgrades to make regular Orcs fill that role) and no word on the miniatures sticking around, I wonder if GW feels they want to step away from that style of Orc mini now.
