I think gloomspite are not as good isoneth, fyre dwarves, Lon etc..but better then the khorne/Nurgle/seraphons of the world. So I gave it the benefit of the doubt. Mangler Squigs alone push me his over the edge for me. I’ve seen them do some ridiculous things. Boingrot Bounderz at 100 for 5 is an insane value. I hope they don’t change in points, as it’s really the one thing that makes them tournament competitive. So naturally I’m building an all Spiderfang Army to be a special snowflake and prove people wrong 😅

Cheers, thanks for the explanation mate 👍

God tier: FEC, DoK, Skaven (point and shoot)

Tier 2: Idoneth, LoN, Fyrefestival, Slaanesh,  SCE, Gloomspite (almost all builds competitive and strong)

Tier 3: Seraphon, Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, Nighthaunt, Sylvaneth, Beasts of Chaos (specific builds within these factions are strong and competitive)

Tier 4: Ironjaws, BCR, Bonespitters, Kharadron, (books need re-works to be competitive)

This is how I PERSONALLY see the tier system.  Top two tiers are there for the dough. Tier 3 are the 3-2 type armies. occasionally pop into the 4-1 realm. Tier 4 armies are there to have fun. Might catch a couple opponents off guard.  There ALWAYS exceptions to this but this is how I see it playing out.

Was curious about the Gloomspite position here - I’m only new, so have only my basic impressions and what I’ve read/listened to so far to go off, but I’ve not actually seen people regard them this highly anywhere else yet. Is there a list/set of lists, or a particular playstyle maybe, that you’ve seen from them that has made you arrive at this conclusion?

I think you have some good tools in your arsenal, an element of surprise and with a master clan general you have some real options.

I think it could be done, if all squig’s can win a big tourney before their tome a tide of mutated rats can surely do the same with a tome.

Interesting, this is a little different to most of the other opinions I’ve read!

To what extent do we think Brood Horrors and/or Stormfiends are part of this equation?

I do not know whether this ist relevant for you, but: In matched play, each spell can only be attempted to cast once per hero phase.

That actually is relevant to me yes, still new to the game and uncovering these things. So multiple different casters can’t all cast the same spell in the same turn then, do I have that right?

  5. Another question: Do people use the replenishing of models from the Gnarlroot spell with multiple leaders to sustain a Kurnoth-heavy army? It’s obviously written to try to encourage you to use it on Tree Revs or Dryads, but we’d be getting a lot more bang for buck on the much higher cost per model Kurnoths...

    1) there damage output is not very reliable with two attacks d6 claws and 1 tongue.

    2) not very fast

    3) 5+ save and 5+ DR isnt that good on a 7 wound unit with all those mortal wounds flyin around these days.

    4) you pay 100 points for something what is a little bit.....meh

If you want to use them, and i dont say they’re competetive, but the most usefull is when using the battalion Menagerie with horticulous.

    1) damage output is better if you have horticulous when a daemon hero is around a beast you add 1 to the dmg chaacteristic and if the hero is horti then you can re-roll charge rolls an dhit rols of 1. Furthermore, you dont stay in combat with these beats you retreat! You must use them as ping-pong balls, charge, retreat, bounce around the enemy and charge retreat and try to keep them busy with your beast. Before the retreat move at a 4+ he gives d3 mortal wounds.. it’s a funny little tacti and works best, in my experience with two beasts and horti....still a lotof points on the table then. Horti and two beast 420 and im not counting the battlion.

btw i love beasts, such great lookin models with fun fluff....

    2) speed can be better cause with trees (feculant) you can run and charge, and horti can dump an extra tree for free and since i said you should use the menagerie battalion you can add a tree every herophase. (The menagerie even lets you set them up from units from that battalion, which coukd be the beasts)

    3) with more beasts, say 3 around an enemy unit charging and retreating you talk about 21 wounds the opponent have to chew through and i think i’s best if the beast are seperate units.

    4) cant change the points....nothing to do to make that better so for the thingies i described above, which are fun, but not very competetive and certanly not against a smart opponent. So we have horti + 3 beasts + battlion is 740 points, and i think you still dont have the minimum requirements of the battalion at this moment, and the battalion does not include battleline units.

ling story short, not competetive but can be fun in friendly games with those beast annoyingly bouncing around an enemy unit pinned down. I think if the beasts could be made battleline with horti as a general! Ooh that would be nice.....then you could get the menagerie and have automatically filledthe battleline requirements at 2k game and can fill the rest of the army with what ever you like...GU’s drones! Drones, drones! And just summon plaguebearers onto objctives. Obviously you still have to deploy the trees smartly to give the contagion points, but i thinki woukd giveit a shot if bests where battleline with horti as general.

This is one hell of a response - thanks so much for taking the time!

Shame to hear they’re not strong, and I can certainly see why based on some of those numbers and details. I freaking love the models, but yep - is what it is.

As much as I want to get into this hobby with a competitive mindset and see how far I can take myself on that front, I do ultimately need to enjoy the models I’m playing, and I imagine I’ll probably end up going with something like an 80/20 rule - with most of my force being designed with competition in mind, but still with just a unit or two I have in purely for the joy of them 😁

If I do end up going Nurgle I’ll be looking back to this info mate 👍

  7. Hey beastly folk - newer player here, enquiring around to get a feel for factions and what works before diving in too hard. Curious, have people had much success with the Nurgle BoC battalion (The Pestilent Throng, I believe)? Any advice on how to best utilise and build it?

Actually Bloodcrushers are great! Where mighty Skullcrushers cost an unholy amount of points, 9 Bloodcrushers are a LOT cheaper.

Skullcryshers are a good roadblock/tar pit that actually has teeth, they work great with juggerlords, but usually best in units of 3. Units of 6 -9 are good, but do NOT try to buff them, it’s almost impossible due to their huge bases. Large units are great as massive roadblocks that you throw at your opponent. Few can honestly take out 30-45 wounds at a 3+ save quickly, which allows the rest of your army (focus your buffs on them) to get into position. Small units work as roadblocks, that have very sharp pointy bits. They WILL hurt.

But don’t immediateky write off Bloodcrushers, they are cheap and very points efficient. I’d call them a budget Skullcrusher, being less durable, having a little less damage, but frankly, they work as a nice bodyguard for  bloodthirsters (big bases, can screen him, he can activate locus, etc.)

It very much comes down to your list. If you’ve got points, and your buffs are more mortal focused, then Skullcrushers are nice. If you’ve got not that many points left, grab Bloodcrushers. The kind of buffs available doesn’t really matter too much, since you’re rarely be in range to buff them, and they’re surprisingly self-sufficient. (I love running my Bloodcrushers!)

Hmm ok, that’s not nearly as bad a verdict as I’d expected based on what I’ve read in here. Pretty cool to hear - cheers! :)  I guess time will tell whether they end up looking genuinely competitive 👍

  9. Yep ok. I’ve heard a few people say similar things too in the Rumour thread.

These changes would really alter how Sylvaneth play from what I understand? Woods seem absolutely central to how we play right now, any changes to their significance would be pretty impactful (not necessarily good or bad, but different certainly). And the one-drop reliance or focus changing would change our approach a fair bit too I would think?

Theres the upcoming Sylavneth (speculation, but also seems super obvious) vs Gloomspite Gitz box. Given how Realm and Chaos and Carrion Empire resulted in new books, it seems very likely Sylvaneth will come out close to or on the same date as that VS box. I think given how they teased it, it would be within 6 months at the latest since GW doesn't seem to blatantly advertise things that are really far away (except Sisters of Battle) or the Herald armies (and malign portents was a weird thing)

Also this year has like...4 Chaos Tomes anyways! 😜 (khorne, skaven, slaanesh, and assuming Everchosen+Slaves To Darkness comes out this year)

Ok understood, that timeline is heartening then atleast 🙂 Looking forward to that!

What do we lack exactly in Sylvaneth do you think? Does there appear to be a pretty sensible way to progress the army, when it comes to unit additions or general rules/tactical options?

Keep in mind any advice given today may become obsolete in like 3 months. Granted I suppose that is a long time depending on how heavy one games in that time period.

Yes very true, I’m expecting a new BT or atleast changes in the GHB. Although just re: the new Tome, did they say “a new Tome for each Grand Alliance” at AdeptiCon, or “ATLEAST one new Tome for each Grand Alliance”?? Because if it’s just one each, we got Fyreslayers straight away... that’d mean no new Tome for us this year technically 😕

  12. Hey folks, question: is it me or does nobody seem to use generic Treelords at all? I’m brand new and I love the models and concept, but seems they’re just not competitive?? Would love a viable justification for using something like the Lords of the Clan battalion...

    +edit+

Additional question! Has anyone got any experience with big bravery debuffing strats at all? Is that actually the aim of using Dreadwood, or is that really more about the alpha? Considering my options here in terms of artefacts and how to leverage the bravery mechanic and battleshock (and if it’s even worth aiming for that in the first place...)

  13. Some sharp-eyed chap found what may well be evidence of what one of our new units is going to be (which would actually solve two rumour engine pics), and it looks pretty spot on to me!

  14. Someone mentioned the Looncurse release tells us that Sylvaneth are likely the next new tome - but aren’t we being shown that Fyreslayers are the Order Battletome for the year now? So no more Order for 2019? Or are they saying that AFTER Fyreslayers, there will still be another 4 tomes...?

Maggotkin came out in January 2018, and it considered by most to be the first real AoS 2.0 battletome. So pretty much every other faction that GW intends to support going forward will be getting their book before Maggotkin next gets a refresh and theres still lots of factions on that list. For the foreseeable future, baring any tweaks made in the GHB in Summer, that Battletome will be staying relevant.

Interesting - good to know. I’ll be keeping my eye out, my searching is telling me a new GHB may well be imminent. Thanks again for the concise, knowledgeable and speedy replies, it makes this experience of “catching up” and learning the ins and outs of the game and hobby that much more enjoyable and manageable.

And yep roger on the Plaguebearers, makes sense. I imagine that addition would be essential in a competitive form of this type of list then.

  16. 17 minutes ago, Dreadmund said:

A mortal army with lots of blight kings sounds like what you want. Blight kings come in units of 5 and are very powerful for their cost. You can pair them up with a variety of heroes like the Lord of Blights and Lord of Afflictions in a battalion or the Glottkin by itself to get buffs that make them hit harder. The Harbinger of decay can make them tankier. The Great Unclean one can buff their movement speed and is the best choice to abuse realm spells because he is the only unit we have that can get a plus to spellcasting rolls (by taking a single, non-preventable wound). An army that focuses on blight kings has great synergies and can make up for their lack of model count through sheer brute force and staying power. However, you're still going to want daemons for summoning, including 20 Plaguebearers since that's the biggest unit size we can summon them in.

This is absolutely perfect and exactly the kind of info and detail I was hoping to get. Thank you so much!

Thinking about the rules etc, I had a glance at the Maggotkin Battletome picture and it looks like one of the more recent books, given some of the details on the cover - do I have that right? So their rules are likely set as they are and not changing any time soon I’d imagine, if I’ve got that correct?

i assume the Plaguebearers are also there for objective gaming too, given how significant that is (new to the game so doing a lot of learning right now - sorry if that seems a ridiculous question!)?

  17. Hi folks! Have been directed here from another thread I started regarding competitive low model count armies.

Easentially all I’m looking to know is, how viable an army is a lower model count Nurgle force? And what might such a list be comprised of? I don’t know that I’d want to play the Thricefold, but am definitely open to any ideas and thoughts on low model count Nurgle that can hang with higher level armies. All comments and assistance welcome and appreciated! 😀

  18. Being new to the game, I’m not entirely sure how GW treats these things, but others might so thought I’d ask: I’ve heard people saying it’s possible Sylvaneth will have an updated book released soon (possibly revealed as early as this weekend at Adepticon), or atleast this year, given GW’s plans to release a lot of Tomes this year - does the “soon” part have any real validity do we think? Is it likely/possible??
