Compare them to said newer kits, which contain 10 models, with parts for 1 banner bearer, 1 musician and 1 leader, and which have a much nicer design overall.  These ‘fit in’ better with the modern business practice GW seems to be pursuing.  That is to say, 1 complete unit in the box, no more, no less

I did not count those as "old models" honestly, they barely past the "beardling" stage. And yeah, 40 bucks for 10 models that you want to pack by 30 seems totally in GW modern business practice... (I'd stop here before bringing some trolls, 'still have a grudge against those too!)

But we get it deleted from our army and now is in new death army.......

I wonder then, what's the benefit of having a shield now?

Also, do you know what's going to happen to Grand Alliance Order? Will it receive updates? Seems GW plans is to get rid of old models anyway (quarrelers, thunderers, etc.), so I guess CoS is just the way to go for Old World armies, right?

  3. Hey y'all.

I've come here to listen to the last news about our noble kin, and I'm sad to hear what is happening in the Realms... Although I can understand how the removed models didn't really fit the new aesthetics of AoS, and maybe GW should just focus on how to make something interesting about naked-fire-beardies and steam-sailors-of-the-skies for now. Also, our elites may add a nice touch of dorf tankiness in future combined armies, like in CoS settings for example...

But I really like the idea of a "glorious death", fighting until the very end and showing all these beardlings what the dwarf pride is all about. After all, this Book of Grudges ain't empty yet!

To be honest in terms of defence Warriors and Thunderers are only okay, I started to temper my expectations of them after my first few games as while a 5+ save rerollable is admirable, it doesn't always get the job done especially if rend is involved. I tend to view Warriors more as damage dealers and screens now since they get the reroll 1 to wound in the opponents combat phase. I quickly found Ironbreakers to be far superior in a defensive role. I tried 2 games against my Slaanesh friend once, in the first game I used Warriors and Thunderers and heroes and got completely smashed. In the  second game I switched to Ironbreakers and less Thunderers and his army just crashed against them barely doing anything. They just ignored all of the -1 rend that was slaughtering the warriors while still re-rolling their saves on an improved 4+ and then hitting back with 2 attacks each. Don't give up dispossessed though, I'm playing around with lists and games a lot and I'm finding Ironbreakers to be core to me winning games at the moment.

Well, my opponent's list was so full of mortal wounds that investing points in better saves would have been wasted points. I'm not sure it will be the case for every other of my potential opponent's lists, though. I don't possess Ironbreakers models though, nor Irondrakes... can I still had hopes of winning some small scale games ? (500-1000pts)

Do you find Inspiring command trait more useful than Resolute from the dispossessed allegiance? If I want to play Order as my allegiance, I bet I have to buy that Order book... but will it still be a thing in the future? Or will battletomes and GHB get more updates than it?

I'm hopeful for at least one new 'big centre piece' model for us though. That seems to be a staple of AoS factions, and we haven't got one.

Good ol' anvil of doom could do on that department. Give us back Thorgrim and Alrik too, the models still looks fantastic.

Telluric themed "endless prayers" could be awesome too.

Anyway I've been experiencing the game a little more, against the new Skaven battletome moreover. Damn, those rats are filthy buff-stackers!

First game I've been board wiped by a charge of the Plague Priest on his big clock-chariot thing, after having cleared the whole 20 plague monks (but one) unit that was suppose to propel it on a double shooting turn, that damn thing managed to charge my Warriors ( a 10 roll ), and since my Thunderers were not far enough, I had to pile in with them to mainly scratch the chariot's paint. Then my opponent had a double turn and his other twenty plague monks managed to charge my poor thunderers.

He also got a friggin' 6 on his prayer roll, which let him throw a mortal wound per model (on 5+) on my closest unit, twice in the game! I somehow felt the weapons were not really balanced between us, especially when I learnt the point cost of these units... :(

We then played a two against one match were I teamed up with a Sylvaneth player, but we couldn't finish. We were in quite bad position as we got diminished by the Skaven's long range shot / spells and couldn't teleport on objectives in on our opponent's board side.

I need to play against another opponent, 'cause at the moment I'm feeling I won't be able to take part in fair games if they're all loaded with these kind of rules.

I read you writing about Miners, do you play them along with the Dispossessed allegiance rules, or do you play full Dwarfs compendium's rules when you do so?

  6. Well, my opponent indeed told me that a unit cannot control several objectives at the same time, though he did create a beeline between two objectives in order to take control of one in one turn and the second in the other. Also, by spreading his unit on two tables quarters, he was more likely to benefits from his bad moon buff.

Ah, I might develop a little more next time if you want.

I don't look much at GW stocks, as my preferences are heavily leaned towards good ol' OOP stuff... ebay sees me passing by a lot these times. :D

@raaaahman so grats for the close game on the first one!

First of all the movement characteristic of a random movement unit is "random" so the grudge do not apply.

Second point I'm quite sure a unit cannot control 2 objectives at the same time. If a single unit is elegible to control more then one objective you need to choose one. Lastly in the case of a tie in poin usually you and your opponent add up the point value of ENTIRE units destroyed and the one with most "kill points" score a minor victory.

    Keep it up! 😉

I would have controlled both objectives because I could have taken one in the 5th turn and the second in the 6th turn. However counting points of entire units killed would have made him won anyway. So in the end it wasn't that close... That's valuable info for next game though ( and I believe I will make a pack of twenty warriors instead of 2 of 10 then ).

  8. So I finally played my first AoS game yesterday, and if I have known the battleplan in its details, I might have scored a minor victory against the Gloomspite gitz!

We played the battleplan where a player has to control every 4 objectives on the board starting from turn 3. List where as follows:

    Dispossessed :

    - Runelord ( pickaxe, resolute )

    - 10 x warriors (great axes and shields)

    - 10 x warriors (axes & hammers, shields )

    - 20 x quarellers

    Gloomspite Gitz :

    - 20 x goblin stabbas

    - 10 x boingrotz bounders

    - 5 x boingrotz hoppers

    - some goblin shaman hero

I was a little annoyed when choosing my grudge, as most of my opponent's units had a random move characteristic, but I really wanted to use Speed Merchants, so we decided to houserule that, the value of the first roll he made with such units will count as its move characteristic value. How do you handle such scenarios?

I was pretty surprised that my packs of quarrelers remained unscathed for the whole game! It was probably due to his lack of ranged weapons and random moves, though I felt like I pretty well timed my Pickaxe use: it was a risky move, as I let him have a double turn without shooting -which was my main source of damage- and he nearly conquered my two objectives if the dices had been a little more in his favor.

But it finally went according to my plan, when I put my quarrelers into his camp, and he was out of reach to charge them. The big mistake I made was to put them to close to one of the objectives, as if I spread them a little more, I may have conquered the other one also, and we would have to resolve a tie (yeah my warriors were finally annihilated after three rounds of tanking on my own objectives).

About resolving a tie, my opponent's didn't seem pretty sure about how to solve it when he explained that we'd have to count the point value of our units remaining on the board, doing a pro-rata from the numbers of models remaining. Was he correct? Because by that calculus, my remaining points were higher than his, and that's could be a great way to try to score minor victories in other unfavorable battleplans to come.

Work has begun on these old timers in gromril. Leadbelcher spray is a god send! I've hit them with a coelia greenshade wash and drybrushed stormhost silver on them, next step is paint all that lovely detail.

    They look great already!

  10. Some questions here:

    1. I see our war machines have moved (again!) in the Games Workshop online store from Ironweld arsenal to the Free People list. Could we still take these as allies?
    2. Where should we get our up-to-date info on our faction? Latest general handbook? Order allegiance book? Some online resource?
    3. Regarding Ancestral Pickaxe, it is said that unit coming on board with this ability count as "having moved" in this phase. How do you manage shieldwalls and other movement abilities from then? Since they do not count as "having ran" I do believe you can still shieldwall and shoot or charge. Am I correct? Also, in the source from this rule, do you put your units back on the table in "the next movement phase" or "the next turn's movement phase"? From what I read over the internet, it seems that everybody play that second option, but hey, still worth asking...

Does anyone know why the miner regiment box was ever discontinued? I put some together recently and actually it was a really good sprue. Great detail, LOADS of bits and not much wasted sprue space.

If I recall correctly, they were limited to one unit per army max. From an army that wasn't in the top popular ones, it might have limited the sales somehow... Anyway, I have got some bits from it on e-bay and will kitbash some with an old warriors set. 'cause c'mon, dwarfs with pickaxes.

You get that too with Irondrakes, with only 10 of them and a captain that litteraly wreck Monsters.

    That's why I prefer Quarrellers.

    Armoured / Big unit ? => Irondrakes

Lightly target / Big blop of thingy ? => 30 Quarrellers.

But I forgot to say, I play mostly in 2k - 2k5 pts.

Ah, I get your point here. That's a shame though, as I really love these old Thunderers minis of mine, and I will probably end up painting them anyway...

How about giving us the statues and giving us the ability to blow them up North Korea style and have them topple on top of our enemies that break through our lines.

😮 Don't blow up our ancestors' statues, you fool!

What about Bugman's Brewery as our terrain? It would make every dispossessed in a radius fight like a (drunken) bear! (ad maybe even getting back on their feet after a beat down)

Plus, and that's my little secret, if I want to put some rifles on my list, I prefer some Freeguild Handgunners in a Mixed Order list.

In a mixed Order list, I'd see the point yes. Though aren't there any nasty combos with Thunderers, Runelord, Warden and/or Dispossessed allegiance? Like hitting on 3+, +1 from thunderers> 20 , re-rolls 1, wounding on 3+, +1 from Warden King's command ability, rend -2 from runelord?

My favorite unit in our army rn is a block of 30 quarrellers, 60 shots can melt quite a lot of models, especially with some rend added from the runelord. I’ve taken out Neferata in one turn with a group of 30 of them.

That's one third of your budget in a 1000 points game, and if they fall below 20 models, that's half the shoots... Ain't that a bit risky?

  14. @Ironbreaker Thanks for this detailed battle report, it is valuable knowledge for the beardlings like myself. Though I didn't see any mention of the Gunmaster's deeds in it, whereas I believed his Longrifle would have been able to inflict some damage.

Also I like your list, and I'm thinking on building a quite similar one swapping, Ironbreakers + IronDrakes to 10 x Warriors + 20 x Thunderers. Does anyone has opinion about it?

Is it viable to only field armored dwarves and leave behind the Warriors, Quarrelers, Thunderers?

    Ain't "armored dwarves" a pleonasm? :)

Joke aside, I'm looking at Hammerers' profile, and I wonder what is best for defense between their 4+ save and warriors' 5+ with re-roll (putting aside that warriors have more wounds for same amount of points spent)?

Also, with Longbeards, ain't that 4+ save worth the 20 points increase from warriors when tanking matters? Or did they really shine only for their buffs?

As for objective games I won some games but only with the ghb2017 where you could use the pickaxe + 80 pt runesmiter and vulkite berserkers.

    What changed since then?

Also I wonder, which faction was your team mate playing in 2v2 matches? Wasn't he doing all the killing while you were tanking?

  17. Thank you all for your insights!

If we ever get a battletome I expect that to be a rule changed.

That's something that's bothering me, it would suck to have to put on the shelf big blocks of trustworthy warriors... But if I understand correctly this is nothing but rumours right now, right?

  18. Hello guys,

I've been lurking this topic for some time as it seems to be full of worthy advices from longbeards like you and also pretty informative about what may be coming for our noble race.

I've played WFB 6th edition a bit 10 years ago ! And now that I've stumbled upon my collection of bearded minis I've felt an urge to get all that hair and metal painted and fielded on a battleground again.

I've contacted a local group and we will be playing progressives games of 500, 750 and 1000 points. I've read the free rules and warscrolls and started to listen/read to some material regarding how to play, how to make lists and how to be a fierce duardin, and that's what got me here.

I've not set my mind on the list I would be playing, but it will revolve a lot around packs of warriors and thunderers/quarrelers (bonus if I can field that badass goblin-hewer that I'm found about 😍 ). I will probably be toying and experimenting around with list configuration while I'm learning the ropes.

Though my immediate concerns is on assembling those warriors, so I'll get to the point:

    Quote

On warriors, are double-handed axes always more effective than their single handed-counterpart?

On the paper, it seems that a pack of > 20 would better benefits from their rules about re-rolling failed to-wound, since better to-hit means statistically more hits and then the re-roll could trigger quite often. Though as it only activates on opponent's turn it may be to marginal to be considered.

On another hand, re-rolling 1s on 3+ rolls with +1 from the Warden King seems pretty nasty...

I'm also troubled if I should assemble my shooty guys either as quarrelers or thunderers, though I have some metal ones to play with before I should make my decision. But maybe their effectiveness change drastically when getting above 20? I dunno...

It could be nice if we get our war machines back into the allegiance in the future, but what I miss the most from our glory days (remember when we were an "elite" army? 😛 ) is to engrave runes on just about every piece of my army!
