The game is meant to be played in the way in which you and your opponent decide (or the event organiser), no argument on this. My own experience with my club is that, while there's only few "meta-chasers", everyone plays warhammer as a game and not as a beauty contest or role playing (there's better systems and mediums for those IMHO).

Still, my point is that if the game designers don't want player to come up with silly formations they should not introduce rules which actively incentivise these formations.

E.g.: a TwoFatLardies WW2 game. Presentation, culture, existing source material, etc. all exist to encourage players to play in a historically reasonable way.

I would also like to see how will this work. Ogor Gluttons for instance has minimum unit size of 3 but get special stuff one for each 6 models.

Maybe Blood Warriors and Ogor Gluttons will go to 10 and 6 model minimum size respectively.

The unit size changes sound influenced by the Meeting Engagement style approach that units had to be minimum size except for mainline/rearguard battleline units that could be 2* Minimum.

And, if true, does rather support my supposition they want to move to one box = 1 unit.

I think this will make the game more enjoyable, actually. At the moment you are forced to bring big blocks of guys to deal with your opponent's big blocks of guys. But if everyone is forced to bring smaller units across the board, relatively the power level stays the same, but the game becomes more dynamic because there are more independent units.

Where are we learning this rule from?

And all that good work is completely undone by Unleash Hell.

Only if the opponent has meaningful shooting units being the prime caveat. Monsters etc. are better when facing Ironjawz or Khorne for example.

Another thing to remember is the missions might make having that 9 inch radius from your shooting units impractical. Not sure how you're planning on keeping that bubble effective on something like Scorched Earth where you need to push forward and spread out to capture enough whilst also defending your home.

Heroes and elites also have the highest profit margin. Less plastic for more money.

    Precisely.

Also if armies are generally 'complete' as lesser model counts it's easier to shuttle you onto the next faction on the hype train so you buy into multiple factions. Which means buying the higher margin 'essentials' for that faction like the monster and heroes, the books, etc. for each thing rather than building out an existing faction with a few more lower margin line infantry stuff.

Monsters and heroes got buffed, predatory spells got buffed. Command points got buffed. These are all good things.

Yes. I think the objectives here are to make us

    1. bring more monsters as they're better

    2. bring more heroes as they're better

    3. bring fewer cheap horde infantry as they're more difficult to use

    4. bring more small units of elite models as it packs more output into a smaller area whilst avoiding the awkward coherency rules

I believe that the 'ideal world' GW wants to see is an army of 30-40 models that looks like a Lumineth Alarith army. 2-3 Cowtains, 30 elite infantry in a few units and a handful of heroes (with you buying into multiple factions rather than getting a massive collection of one).

I wouldn't be surprised if they were seeing 100 Mortek Guard lists or 40 strong blobs of Skinks as a problem.

From a 'product logic' point of view I think they want us to treat 1 box = 1 unit where minimum sized stuff is everywhere.

I'd be interested to see how the Path to Glory rules pan out in relation to unit sizes.

Most people who buy GW miniatures don't even play the games, at least not more than once in a blue moon. The rules are just an excuse to get people buying miniatures. GW is still a miniatures company, not a rules company - they're just smart enough these days not to say it out loud.

This is me, for example. I play 1-2 wargames a week but GW games (with the exception of Epic or Warmaster's current community updated editions) are infrequent. Maybe once a quarter? Most of my games are things like Bushido, Mortem et Gloriam, Infinity (arguably the best designed rules - for sci-fi skirmish - on the market right now), Flames of War, Epic, etc. Over lockdown I've been buying into and getting hyped about my first game of Marvel Crisis Protocol. Something like Warlords of Erehwon fits into the same general niche as AoS (large scale fantasy skirmish) and has a much smoother rule set whilst retaining character in the factions.

IMO AoS has the main draws of

    1. large established player base making games easy to arrange

    2. some good models

    3. the feel of an evolving setting (40k feels incredibly stagnant)

    4. characterful factions you want to play

  7. What interests me about these coherency rules is that they went for such a modle by model approach.

Other games out there often have a similar need for unit coherency but use defined distance from a unit leader (such as Flames of War) or have a more general unit area (like Clash of Spears). Now, these games have their own quirks and foibles but they don't have such long daisy chained units and avoid the level of player punishment for falling out of coherency and are much simpler to employ on the table.

  8. I'd love a move to digital rules and then having separate 'faction books' that are for people who love that faction. Filled with lore and art and stories and painting guides and conversion tricks and so on. But no rules. Explicitly no rules.

Something like Infinity with Corvus Belli have all their rules and factions stuff online for free for anyone to just look at.

By desynching rules releases from model releases they are also able to have a model schedule that is much more equitable for every faction. Basically every player can expect to get something new for their army every 3 months (unless you play Tohaa...) or so because as a company they can just release a model when its ready as rules support is already out there or super easy to provide by updating the web app.

Fine, do what you want. I think Dispossessed burning down a settlement over one coin is dumb sh*t.  So agree to disagree.

    Yes I agree.

1 penny short = death sentence actually means 'never do a deal with a dwarf, it is never worth the risk'.

I'ma paint mine with the green glowing eyes and nostrils like in the artwork. DAMN. I can't wait.

I'm thinking I'll do mine in cold white armour, black skin, cream+brown for the bone.

Still need to decide a pop colour for things like cloth. Not blue as I've done that recently. Maybe a burnt orange.

  11. I think I'm going to jump in with a hopefully all vampire army. Aiming for 1kpts to use in doubles or small games.

Of note, if any of you follow the Soulbound RPG they just released the Bestiary book which has a section on Soulblight that includes

    • Necromancer
    • Deadwalker Zombie
    • Dire Wolves
    • Fell Bats
    • Grave Guard
    • Deathrattle Skeleton
    • Wight King
    • Vampire Lord

A little sidebar says that almost all Vampires are human but there are some who are not, including an Elven Vampire from Necros.

A theme throughout the story text for Vampires is the beastial hunger vs nobility and control. Definitely monstrous beat type vampires as well as fancy gothic nobility supported here. Mention too that not all Vampires are heartless, some still have compassion for the living.

Ok - Old Dain is on point.

Makes me really excited to see some more clothed Dwarfs with shields and beards, and armour and with some Norse vibes.

He is good. And, combined with the new Easterling reveal, suggests a proper look at Dale/Erebor during the War of the Ring.

  13. The box is an easy pass for me.

The only time I'd play it is when at the wargame club and if I'm there then I'd rather be playing a full blown wargame.

Which means it's down to the miniatures and...I don't want most of them. I'll pick up some proper fancy Vampires once the Gravelords are available.

  14. Question about the battalion for the Windchargers.

It lets them count as charging. If a unit charged it gets to pile in even if there is no enemy unit within 3 inches.

E.g.: Your unit charged but the enemy unit dies before your unit got to pile in and fight. Your unit still gets to pile in 3 towards something else.

Does this mean that your Windchargers get to make their 6 inch flying pile in move even if they're nowhere close to an enemy and thus get some extra hit and run movement shenanigans during the charge phase?

Do they count as charging during the opponent's charge phase as well?

I like 1k games on a 4x4 table, though the new 40k tables of 30x44 might be nice if you wanted to get into the action faster. You can always remove an objective or two if it seems like it'd be too crowded on the smaller board. Shifting objective has worked well for us, Better part of valor with 4 instead of 6 objectives, Focal Points, Scorched Earth with 4-6, and Battle for the Pass is one of our favorites.

    Thanks.

Any pitfalls to look out for? Things to avoid bringing in armies?

    Ok, ok, bear w me...

1 or 2 units of Censor bearer allies. Surround them with 12 chaos spawn.

Poisons during combat so if you go second you start off summoning a turn early. Put out 30 daemonettes every turn.

Same trick as with the Fomoroid Crusher+Spawn.

The Crusher damages terrain. All units within 6 inches of terrain take d3 mortals on a 3+.

Fomoroid+3 spawn ~300pts. Hide at the back/screen enemy teleports/etc. and generate 3-4 DP a turn. Generates DP even if you go first and they can do it without needing anything rom your enemy to let it start working.

  17. I would note that 'we are the only faction able to realistically summon 1000pts' and 'artificially increase the points costs to account for summoning' becomes mildly circular. Higher points costs means less summoning needed to reach 1000pts afterall :D

I did like the Fomoroid Crusher + Spawn thing people were talking about.

Get a few spawn to stand near a piece of terrain at the back of the board. Fomoroid Crusher stands near the terrain and hits it with the ability. The spawn take a few wounds. Generate depravity. Repeat each turn so you get a healthy Depravity flow for a few turns. Messes with the 'overpricing in book units' balancing but is still a funny piece of tech in the backpocket.

You could always use the War Mammoth from Lord of the Rings and kitbash a shrine of some kind on top.  That would be pretty sweet.

There might be something interesting you could do with a Herdstone as well... maybe kitbash it onto a Chaos Chariot? Or a Tuskgor Chariot?

I could probably get some small metal chain and just attach it to some models who are pulling it...

How big is the base for the Warshrine?

  19. Could try something with Glutos, a shardspeaker (or two) and some big units of Fiends. Runs into issues with speed I think and keeping it all aligned with each other for the buff auras. Add in Geminids.

Now the -1 to hit from Glutos, -1 from Geminids, passive -1 from Fiends and their additional -1 to be wounded form being a big units AND potentially the spell from the Shardspeaker could see them surprisingly durable.

Any ways of adding more attacks to the Fiend's Stinger? +1 to hit should not be too tough to find.
