  1. I agree with your blog post. To add to your thoughts,  I also don't think balance is obtainable (without major changes to the game as is) , when so much of the "power" of an army comes from player decisions with list building.  All efforts to balance armies abilities would have to assume a list built at a certain power level of some sort.   Right now, a player could take one of the stronger factions (let's say seraphon) but build it in such a way that it would lose to just about everything.  Conversely, you could build a very competitive list of grots where it beats nearly all non-competitive lists regardless of faction.  Balancing armies around the top/medium/or low tier lists would force you to play it that way to actually remain balanced. As I've become a somewhat experienced player now, it is nice to be able to tone my lists down or up depending on my opponent; not being able to do so would be an additional concern if I only had one army (certainly not the case for me!).

Wait wait wait hold one my man. You are telling me that you not only have this beautiful table, but also a cute wife who does not only tolerate you gaming habit but actively participates in it? Please teach me master! :D

The table is all Alder just with two different stains- the cabinet was just an in stock piece at the furniture store and I don't remember what kind of wood!  I had the cabinet first, so I tried to keep the table matching.  As far as the wife- well, that's the luckiest thing I've had happen in my life yet!

The terrain still looks great.  If that is from a company that sells them I'd be interested.  I know you were sorting out quality issues with the commission work before did it settle out?

I thought he ended up rectifying the problem really well- he created and sent a whole new batch.  When I tried to return the pieces that did not make snuff, he told me to keep them, so now I have a LOT of terrain.  I won't be using the second half once my hagglethorn hollow order comes (if it ever does) so if you are interested in those pieces that are functionally the same but missing the shading and highlights in the rocks...could be a good opportunity for both of us!

The cabinet was from a local furniture store (though I doubt it's unique to this store)-I'm pretty sure it's usual use is for the display of china and various dinnerware.

Just a thing i spotted today

more than half of seraphon products are out of stock 😵

As someone who started out with Seraphon, I'll just say that this was a very common occurrence for me when I wanted to buy anything 2 years ago.

Update for a year later!  Filled up the cabinet (to the brim) and had to even convert the closet to extra storage.  The top shelf is a large death army (120 skeletons, 40 grave guard, and a bunch of knights etc). I haven't played with those yet.  Though many (the vast majority) are only started, and not finished, I have painted every model here myself over the last two years (yesterday was my 2-year anniversary).

  6. Going to update this because it's a year later and even though I STILL don't have my kickstarter "Hagglethorn Hollow" (which will be very bad-ass and gaming table related) I HAVE added two original paintings to dress up the room.  I also added shelves into the closet to hold even more models, but I suppose that's a picture for the collection thread instead!

I had the goblin painting ("Moon Hunters") commissioned from a superb artist named Bill Carman but the only information he was given was "goblins and the bad moon."  I was interested in what someone who doesn't play would come up with!  The other picture wasn't commissioned and is less warhammer related obviously, but I still want to show it off because it's in the room, plus we were able to procure the original painting from Scott C, another one of my favorite artists.

I'll be back when Hagglethorn Hollow finally gets here!

  7. He should have a 1/3 chance to NOT teleport (on a one or two the teleportation fails and then he can't move at all! on a 3-4 he teleports but can't move, and on a 5-6 he can teleport and move).  When he teleports, he must place 9" away from ANY enemy unit, so you can put your long distance things or objective capture units spaced out a bit to block an important area.  I've found that against seraphon you want to take first turn, and run onto objectives.  They are VERY good at mobility, but their actual fighting ability is pretty awful so if you get on the objective first it will be hard for him to shift you.  I rarely shoot at heroes to be honest due to "Look out, Sir!" so make sure you are using that rule and have units near a vulnerable hero.  The other option is to engage the bastilidon because he can only shoot at what he's locked in combat with, (although it's hard to kill him without a tuned mortal wound list, you can tie up a 280 point unit for pretty cheap by throwing almost dead units into it each turn and summoning them back with bloodtithe points).  It is a bit harder for you due to being chaos demons- if you were mortal units I don't think you'd have much trouble at all!

  8. I bought shares that are up 50% so I've been a happy camper.  I'm not really an expert (though I do hold a significant amount of shares in other companies or funds that I keep track of) and there's a few things that stand out.  It occurs to me that most things trade at a P/E that's super high based on expected growth.  That means, to me, that most stocks are valued based on perception rather than just a solid, undervalued companies, that will still only make you money when someone else values it higher than you do.  Even if GW shows healthy profits, I just don't know if volume will be there to make a huge crazy run (like BYND) .

    1. Since I am US based, every transaction incurs a 50$ trade fee so I only want to buy in large increments of 10,000$+.  Most retail investors, including me, want to buy small amounts monthly to average their dollar cost

    2. Such low volume being traded means all the jumps up (or down) happen at once...so people might be scared off by what would be perceived volatility

    3. Relatively high share prices also price out some value investors or just GW fanboys who can pick up more models for the money

Here's hoping that the GW keeps going strong!

  9. Etsy- I got printed trays from someone called Mack the Maker and he will probably print 3d print different formations if needed.  I ordered some and the material is very similar in look and feel to the GW bases so it's exactly what I wanted.  I had him make me a custom sized Dread Saurian base, with the same bevel edge and...slope? of the official GW bases as well.  Turned out great!

  10. So much depends on how you intend to play the game.

What do you NEED? Just models really, because the rules are free and the warscrolls are free.

What do you need to play in most groups I've seen? Models, Battletome, General's Handbook

What can you use if you are really into it? Models, Battletome, General's Handbook, Malign Sorcery

Start Collecting is similar.  It's always a good value compared to buying the models individually, but whether or not the units are what you want varies.  Depending on the army it's useful toward a competitive list, or it's totally not (seraphon), but that again only matters based on how you want to play it.

  11. I've only had a chance to play one game with them so far, but it wasn't easy to keep huge units of stuff wholly within 12" of the loonshire, because it has to be a few inches into your own deployment zone.  At least for my game, I couldn't afford to sit back and get shot away so I had to move things up into his face ASAP.  As for the squig herd, I don't mind them running off and doing mortal wounds- it's far preferable to them dying in combat where you don't get the 4+ MWs.

Anyway, back to that game I mentioned, once I GOT in oh man they look good.  It's hard to move 120 grots up a board quickly but I had almost every opposing unit all netted up and -1 to hit with two max units of grots spread out pretty well.

  12. I drew these tokens for my seraphon army early on- I have a short description of what they do on the other side.  I've now used them in so many games I easily remember.  The first set were on some glossy dots I bought of amazon and they sucked to work with but it's all I had.  I found some NON-glossy from the same company and I think you'll agree that the second set (the constellations) is much better, because they actually hold the ink.

When building a total grot list I’m thinking a 60/60/20 spread with the 20 being shootas. If I didn’t want to add other units that would be 60’s across all three as I love em gitz but I had to cut down a little for support. Anyhow what do you guys think on that spread? Should I change it to 60/40/40? Or is that still too many grots and I should add more support?

    60/60/60 :)

  15. Just finished gluing the final 20 grots and can now finally say that all my preorders and friends are assembled (I still reserve the right to add more to this army)! Just wanted to show them off to reward myself for busting my booty these last two weeks.

Hmmm, that case looks awful familiar - although it appears a bit more crowded than last time I saw a case that looked like that full of Lizardmen...

You haven't even seen the bottom yet ;) Full of grots in these next two weeks, though once I paint them up more I may promote them to top shelf!

  17. Proud (or should I be ashamed) of how much I've built and painted as I approach my one year anniversary of starting warhammer! Seraphon was all I did until recently (now I've got pestilens, slaves to darkness, stormcast, death, and have pre-ordered a large goblin force, and my wife's slannesh take up half the bottom shelf).  Hopefully now that the cabinet will be completely full I will quit buying and coloring in those primed or grey models.

  18. I took my design to a local custom furniture shop.  I'm not an architect but my undergraduate degree is in illustration, so I just drew it up in color, slapped the measurements I wanted on there and then we discussed how to make it happen.  It was definitely not inexpensive,  but I'm incredibly pleased with the quality of it, across the board.   The man who did the actual carpentry never quite understood what it was for, but I sent him the above photos too, so he could see for himself.  There is a drawer, but the bottom isn't enclosed; it's like a 9" skirt and it just makes the table look more robust as well as adding an area to put that second wood tone on for aesthetic reasons.

  19. I purchased the terrain from someone who hand makes them.  There's an issue with the paint quality currently that I'm dealing with, and the guy is supposedly remaking them, though I haven't heard back in a few days.  I don't want to besmirch or praise the maker until the issue is resolved, so that I can give appropriate feedback, so I'll hold off on providing the name of said enterprise until then.  I love the design of it though-  it's 3d printed and then painted and flocked by hand. It's just that some of it isn't painted yet!  Hopefully it'll look even better soon.  I also have the whole of "Hagglethorn Hollow" pledged on kickstarter, so that should help further flesh it out.  Could be waiting a year on that though.
