Hell, even putting the warsphinx/king's warsphinx aside, they could probably get more individual warscrolls out of the necrosphinx. Change the role and rules based on, say, if it has a skull face or not, or if it has its wings. Wouldn't be much more than they've done with the araknarok.

Throw in another scroll for an warsphinx without it's howdah and you're up to five "separate units". Then two for tomb guard, two for snakes, a hero or two. That's already comparable scroll diversity to fyreslayers or flesh-eaters, and rather better model diversity, even before you add new units.

Thats true. They could definitely kit bash quite a lot out of that set. It is a fantastic model, although a bit small compared to modern centerpiece beasties.

The rank and file skeletons and the horsemen and chariots couldn't really be repurposed without standing out at this point, and a new, improved bone giant would be great as the old one does look a bit derpy. Note though that it has a hat made of smaller skeletons, which is one of the Most Warhammer concepts of all time!

some of them look quit amazing, even for their age

Agreed. As a TK collector I think there are a few approaches which could be taken. They can't and won't just bring the old faction back in its entirety, and I highly doubt they'll bring back any of it. The most likely scenario is a new faction, in the style of Nagash and the Mortarchs. A lot of GW's death stuff has a slight egyptian vibe, so it wouldn't take much to lean into that, and come up with something new which still has some nods to the Tomb Kings aesthetic.

If they were to go the Daughters of Khaine route, and use old kits as the core of the army then I reckon these three are it. The Sphynx has three builds, and two of them give you a tomb king on foot. The snakes have two builds, each a distinct unit, and the Tomb Guard have two weapon choices and would be a natural fit as the new battleline unit.

They could then add between three and five more kits, to fill out the rest of the range. If I were to bet then I would say at minimum a second troop kit, in the style of the Tomb Guard, but with a ranged option, then something like the Ushabti, perhaps with multiple builds, and then either a chariot kit, a catapult. Ideally they'd do all of that, plus a huge centerpiece model. Add a hero or two either separately or as part of one of those and I think it would be a solid range.

I'm not going to hold out too much hope for any of that to happen though, but we can hope.

Don't forget about Somali pirates, not as cool as rumored undead ones, but similarly effective.

I'm now imagining pirates raiding the ship, triumphantly stealing the shipping containers, and then wondering what to do with a thousand copies of the same book about dryads, and a lifetimes supply of plastic trees!

  4. Well the entire Malign Portents canon is set immediately prior to the Necroquake, and Soul Wars is set at and immediately after it. Beyond that I don't think many of the ones I've read recently have been fixed to a particular time.

Its my explanation for why they miss so often!  Its those damn video games!

I love that idea!  However, I'm not sure how I feel about having a Jabberslythe and half a dozen Carnifexes serving me in the afterlife...

I'm going to set all of my horrible monsters to patrol the edges of my domain and eat intruders. The orcs and beastmen etc will occupy the same no mans land, and then I'll have standing armies of Elves and Dwarves etc to keep my citadel safe in the event they cause trouble.  I'll keep the undead and Necrons as a last reserve naturally. I figure that even somewhat horrible factions like Witch Elves and Chaos Dwarves would be of use, since they will have to do my bidding, even if their natural proclivities are not quite what I'd like. I'll also have plenty of Wizards for engaging conversation, and to play RPGs and Wargames with.

I could do with more minis of regular people though, to do the actual cooking and cleaning and such.

As you can tell i've thought this through in quite a bit of detail!

  6. Just had a look through every Elf Army book I can find.
The first rune doens't have a clear match, but could be an upside down Cython (Serpent, wisdom, Lileath, futility)
The second could be a simplified Hanor (Rain, boldness, ingress) or possibly a very simplified Asur (rulership, the eternal flame, rebirth,  Asuryan) , the fourth is clearly Larime (frost, caution, egress), and the last one might be a simplified Histo (plenty, dominance, golden age).

I do paint old-timey video games like Pacman and Pong onto those screens.

That's awesome, at least your toy soldiers will have fun while sitting in their cockpits between games!

Clearly you need to paint the pilots and controls, since they need to be done properly if they are going to do the piloting! I have a theory that the Ancient Egyptians were right about everyone needing Shabti dolls to serve them in the afterlife. Most modern people are going to be woefully ill prepared, but we wargamers will be quite well off! I wouldn't want to get to the hereafter and discover that I didn't have anyone available to fly the shiny grav tank in my garage because I'd skimped on painting the pilots!

I just hope that the life sized spiritual incarnations of my models will look like the things they represent, and not like badly painted models...

  8. I like to make sure that I am happy with things, but don't really care whether other people are.

I prefer to pick and undercoat colour which works for the model, so that if there are any inaccessible areas, they will at least be a colour that works, rather than just spray painted white, or the blank grey of the plastic.

Funny story, long ago, when I was first getting into the hobby, I only had a limited budget for paints (as most twelve year olds tend to find I'm sure). Every pot of paint you buy is less pocket money you can spend on models after all! So for a long while I didn't bother getting a pot of grey paint, as I figured I could carefully paint around areas which were supposed to be grey, and leave the plastic in its natural colour! It only somewhat worked, but it did the trick until I got a model of Gandalf and had to invest in a proper pot or two!

Basically its all down to the standard you choose, and no one should feel bad about doing what works for them, rather than whatever is fashionable, or accepted.

  9. If we're going to get rid of all the old world characters then lets start at the top. That Sigmar guy was already dead long before the End Times! Its thus ridiculous that he's one of the most powerful people in the new setting! They should clearly be more original.

They might need to change the name of the game though...

(I case anyone can't tell, this post isn't entirely serious.)

  10. I tend to spend about 90% of the time painting, and relatively little playing. Honestly I wouldn't recommend this hobby if you don't enjoy the craft side of it. So much of the point of warhammer is about building and painting that I'm not sure the gaming will be worth your while if you don't enjoy that. Clearly there are people who are only into the game, or rush or hire out the hobbying, but i definitely get the sense that they are in the minority. At the end of the day there are a lot of great games out there which can use prepainted minis  or at least small forces which won't take as long to get ready. If yiu like the warhammer setting the try a skirmishes sh game like those suggested above. If lore isn't an issue the FFG's star wars games can be a good option, their prepainted ship s are lovely. For fantasy themed stuff check out frostgrave and its family of games, they require fewer minis, and don't require you to use their own range. Wizkids prepainted figures (branded for D&D and pathfinder) work just fine ( and are increasingly good quality).  In short there are options.

So there are two editions being released?  An older edition and a new edition?

My reading of the description on the page is that both versions are updated to 4e WFRP, but one is a special cover collectors edition with slip cases, while the other is the regular version which will be in shops. I'm wondering whether you will have to get the adventure book and the companion book separately when the standard edition comes out, or whether they will be sold together still, though.

  12. 49 minutes ago, Emmetation said:

Don't worry, we are releasing the standard editions too. These will be available for pre-order when the pdfs are complete, and will be more affordable. The collector's edition are created with collector's in mind and we know won't be for everyone. Both the standard and CE will have the same content so you won't be missing out on anything within the books themselves

That's good to hear. The content sounds great, but that price tag can't be feasible for most gamers. If we can get the standard books gradually over a couple of years it's doable though.

  13. This thread is making me realise another factor in why I'm so bad at playing the game. I'd never even considered that some players can tell which weapon options something has at a glance from across the table, let alone how many models are in a unit and which are the champions etc.

Being partially sighted I struggle to keep track of who's where at all, without trying to work out the capabilities of my opponents models! Can't think of a way around it except larger scale models though...

I think its important to remember is that if Jack Armstrong needs to be nerfed, well, that is entirely GW's fault.

Clearly GW doesn't know how to write rules and they don't playtest their games and their playtesters don't know how to play and they can't balance battletomes and their models are too expensive and the points are way off and they can't keep Jack Armstrong in check and they hate the swarming throngs of millions of Bretonnia players and they don't know how to run their tournaments and they don't care about Matched Play and they don't communicate with their fans and Open Play is just muckin' about and they killed my Tomb Kings and AoS has no fluff and they they retconned the Eye of Terror campaign and their last ad wasn't funny and their paints come in pots, not dropper bottles and everything is Kirby's fault and they nerfed my army and something about Thunderers and they hate my Grand Alliance and the Kunnin' Ruk isn't fun to play and they blew up the world and I burned my army and...and...

...that about covers it.  Please let me know if I've forgotten anything!

    😀

This post is a masterpiece, you should feel very proud!

  15. I'm the exact opposite of a tournament player, so can't really offer any advice, however its interesting to read the discussion.

When I first started using my DoK army I accidentally used the Hag queen model as the Slaughter Queen. It didn't make a difference in the battle, but when I next wanted to play them I had a tricky decision to make, because my Slaughter Queen had performed a lot of heroic feats in that battle, despite her army loosing over all. She'd taken command when her general was killed, and endured round after round despite everything thrown at her. By the end of the game she had a name, and the start of a backstory. I thus really didn't want to switch models for that character, since it felt a bit wrong. My solution was to find a nice dark-elven sword which would fit in place of her chalice and convert the model to have the correct weapon load out. I repainted her to fit her new status as the general of the army going forwards, and have been using her as a slaughter queen ever since.

I'm curious though as to whether this wouldn't be allowed, since while its an effective conversion, which I'm please with the results of it isn't a particularly dramatic one. The model still has the same basic pose it always did.

(Note that this question is entirely academic, since I'm never going to attend a tournament, I'd be interested to hear people's views though!)

That's fantastic!  I picked up Looncurse for the squigs as well, although, I think I will need to get a few more.  I have some grots and a few other units around, but I still need to figure out what I want so that I can reach that 2k point army.  I wouldn't mind playing a 1k game just to figure out the maneuverability of the squigs and what they can accomplish before I make a larger model purchase.

Well, you can never have enough squigs... that's just not possible! I think I now have thirty once I add these to my older ones, but I kind of want to get another of the new plastic sets just to be able to build all of the herders, they are awesome designs!
I was quite keen on the Sylvaneth side of the box too though truth be told. Until they released this and the shadespire band I had everything except Alarielle (who I now won't be getting for a while...). I'm keen to build up the last few weapon options on the revanants, and try out that side of the box as well.

I definitely didn't need another big army project, and won't be getting any more warhammer for a while, but it should be an entertaining next few months of painting!

  17. There is always something to be said for compromise though. Maybe you don't enjoy competitive games, and your opponent won't enjoy more story driven ones. One option would be to not play against each other, but a more amicable solution might be to agree to split the difference and alternate play styles. You still wouldn't get the most out of every game, but at least you'd both get to do the play style you prefer some of the time, rather than one person always being at a disadvantage.

I know that this is a bit out there, but I would re-introduce Tomb Kings as the first cross-GA battletome. The book would contain two allegiance packages:

    • One faction of Order aligned TK that have generally regained more of their pre-curse consciousness, led by Settra and maybe Khalida (which could require some explanation or a ret-con). Focused on Hysh.
    • One faction of Death aligned TK that are led by Arkhan, or possibly a different or new character. Focused on Shyish.

Completely scrap all of the finecast kits and the really old plastic kits, so we start with the following:

    • Tomb Guard
    • Necropolis Knights/Sepulchral Stalkers
    • Warsphinx/Necrosphinx

Most "big" releases have been getting in the 7-10 kit range including terrain and endless spells/invocations, so I'll limit myself to that:

    • Skeleton infantry/archers dual kit
    • Skeleton chariots kit
    • Melee/ranged Ushabti dual kit
    • Necrolith Colossus/Hierotitan dual kit
    • Liche Priest/Warlock hero blister
    • Settra/Arkhan hero kit
    • Khalida (or other secondary hero) blister
    • Endless Spells/Invocations
    • Casket of Souls/Suns terrain piece

If they let me have a 10th kit I'd probably go for the screaming skull catapult.

Each of the kits would be designed such that it could be assembled to reflect either of the two factions with things like headswaps, shield swaps or various decorative bits.

Both allegiances would have access to the full roster of units, except the only the Death side would have the Necrolith Colossos while the Order side would get the Hierotitan. Most of the warscrolls would have wording that would change their functionality depending on whether they have the DEATH or ORDER keyword.

The Order faction would be a priest faction with no wizards, while the Death faction would be the opposite.

Overall the book would be written to push new design space and show off how subtle rules changes can alter the playstyle of a faction dramatically. The kits would be designed to create a stunning, fully fleshed out army that would be appealing to as wide an audience as possible while also maintaining an element of "backwards compatibility" so that they appeal to folks still playing  8th edition, for example.

EDIT: I'll note that while I did end up cutting some cool units, I focused on cutting things that are redundant from a gameplay perspective. Sepulchral Stalkers cover the deepstrike/mobility plan just fine, rendering Tomb Scorpions, Scarab Swarms, and Carrion unnecessary. Horse archers and Horsemen are largely redundant with chariots, and chariots are far more iconic (and easier to design in a way that can be built to two different aesthetics with relatively minor changes). Necrotects and Tomb Heralds are unnecessary.

This is a really well thought out way to do it. I would love to see this happen!

So April has been a busy month for hobby  I've managed to paint an army in a month, a lord of the rings army specifically the army of the dead with Aragorn Legolas and Gimli as well, its been a long time since i've painted any lord of the rings and it was really nice to have a break from painting any age of Sigmar. I also went to a one day event that my local club ran with my gut busters again and this time had some more better luck and won a game but that brings the number of events i've been to this year to 4 just one more and I've done my hobby goal of going to 5 events this year.

Reading wise ive started reading the blood angels omnibus part 2 which I'm really liking as I'm a massive blood angels fan boy, age of Sigmar wise ive read the Fyreslayers battletome so I'm sticking to reading a battletome each month, next month Slaanesh.

Now that I write this update it doesn't seem like i've achieved that much but its been a busy month of mostly reading and a bit of painting but as long as I'm doing little bits I should achieve a lot in the coming months either way this hobby resolution has been a great motivator.

That sounds pretty good to me!
