  1. Going in with your eyes open is essential, for sure. Beastclaws are competitively pretty terrible, and I knew that when I made the choice (though this made the news of them winning a major event shortly afterwards quite surprising!) because I'm not focused on being competitive. AoS is the game I play to take a break from competition in other systems. :)

There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a competitive army (though I personally feel that trying to ensure your first army in a new game is going to be competitive is like trying to run before you can crawl). It just really annoys me when people talk as though competition is the only reason to play, and competitiveness should be the only factor in any player's choice of faction. Every gaming community I've seen where that attitude is common has been unbelievably toxic - I'm fortunate now to have found one where most people just want to have a good time in their games.

I have no idea what could bring a new player to pick up BCR.

Why would a new player care which army was the most competitive? As a relatively new player who started with BCR, I can tell you that the tiny number of models to paint, the surprisingly cheap Start Collecting box that actually contains everything you need to get started and to build a collection, and the direct and uncomplicated playstyle were all serious points in their favour.

I'm not going to win a tournament against hardcore players any time soon... but that's nothing to do with the Beastclaws, it's because I'm a new player. The games I've had with them have been really fast and really fun, and that's way more important to me. :)

Borrow it, play a game, you're going to love it. It's much more dynamic than WFB, and with the new Core Book they gave us a world to explore and expand upon. The last Malign Portent campaign story was decided by votes you could win by painting models, playing games in stores etc. It felt like you had a part to play in the development of the story. Got hooked pretty fast this way..

Cheers, I've had a few games now and it's a ton of fun. :D

  4. Fielding Alarielle at 1500 points seems a bit over the top to me. Like, I'm sure there are plenty of armies that would struggle against that. It would have been a pretty dull and one-sided game in the other direction if your Frostlord had taken her out on the charge, too - I'd ask my opponent to leave the god-tier characters to larger games.

  5. I can't see a reason to run anything other than the Ethereal Amulet on a Frostlord, are there any other contenders for useful artefacts? The Thermalrider Cloak is tempting to guarantee the first-turn charge, but the 3+ invulnerable save is really hard to give up.

  6. I'm kind of struggling to put together 1000-point lists for my fledgling Beastclaws. At the moment I've only got the big beasties (any options possible) and Mournfangs available.

Last game I ran a Huskard on Thundertusk, Stonehorn Beastriders, and four Mournfangs, for spot-on 1000. I'm just not sure how to make... well, any other functional list, really.

I'd really like to get a Frostlord in, since the boost in hitting power is pretty significant. But if I do that, there's not enough points for a TT Huskard and the required battleline. Instead, taking Stonehorn Beastriders and a minimum unit of Mournfangs leaves me at 900 points, with nothing I can spend the remaining points on.

    Any suggestions?

Bought two start collectings on sale today. Lemme know what you guys think about this 1k list.

    Realm: Ghur
    General:
Huskard on Thundertusk (Everwinter's Master, Chain Trap, Gryph-feather Charm)
    Mournfang Pack (Gargant Hackers)
    Mournfang Pack (Gargant Hackers)
    Stonehorn Beastriders

Haha, just saw this post. Yep, as far as I can tell, that's "The List" at 1000! Swap the artefact and equipment for slightly different feel - I used Blood Vultures instead of Chain Traps, and the Ethereal Amulet.

  7. I ragequit when Warhammer Fantasy died. I even got pretty heavily into development of The Ninth Age for a while. When that stopped being satisfying, I sold off my Skaven, Vampire Counts and Wood Elf armies. I thought I was out.

But dang it if the second edition of Age of Sigmar doesn't seem like a ton of fun! I'm intrigued by some of the really interesting fantasy concepts on display. (Dwarven sky-ships! Flying turtles!) I'm still not entirely comfortable with the Stormcast as they seem devastatingly dull and overblown (just like Space Marines), but I'm trying to get past that prejudice.

Currently I'm looking at borrowing a friend's Beastclaw Raiders, as I really like the idea of running an extremely-low-model-count army.
