So hey guys!!
I've been following these posts now since early 2018 and not having tabled any AoS games as of yet (work is a terrible thing and gets in the way of life :P ), but I'm almost done painting up my Idoneth (this being my very first tabletop army I'm going to play ever.
I'm a little concerned at the fact that it would seem that there are so many discussions revolving around how the deepkin have no competitive edge, but I do not regret my choice in picking them as my first faction as well I am in love with the aesthetics and the lore.
What I have to my name with regards to models:
1 x Leviadon
3 x (10) units of Thralls
1 x Volturnus
12 x units of eels (these are not painted nor have I decided on which way to go morsarr or the other ones)
1 x Akhelian Allopexes
1 x Aspect of the Storm
and then basically 1 of each of the separate models (tidecaster, soulscryer etc)
What would you guys suggest I do with my first list (given what I've got) and what would you suggest I add to make it a little more competitive?

I think it depends on the scenario you are playing....two gives you a little more field control. I personally play with two shipwrecks and this has never been bad for me, but try and see what works for you

A terrible loss. Barely even considered a game. Vs new stormcast and they came down from the heavens, surrounded me on 3 sides and just murdered my guys.
Fairly confident that reavers are trash unless you run them into melee. Using them at long range is garbage. I'd rather take a more durable unit for less points for objects or Khineri for objectives. Thralls never got a chance to shine. There weren't enough of them left after my opponents first strike and swinging into SCE 2-3+ save rerolling 1's isn't going to be good. The AoSea was disappointing. I failed every dice roll which is whatever but the last turn, I shot and charged and kill a dude. Fairly meh for 440 pts. I'd probably run tidecasters or spellweavers like mentioned earlier in the thread.
3. Built my friends new Nighthaunt army. 2 Soul wars boxes worth, a 10 man of something and the new push fit banshees. Really easy and fast kits to put together. Something like 80 models in 4.5 hrs with mold line cleaning and a little gap filling for 2-3 models that just would not push together. I almost bought them last weekend but after looking at there rulebook, glad I didn't. It's a great army, very durable, lots of MWs but it's just another melee army and I have enough already.
4. Probably going to stick with my plan and buy a DoK army in a month or 2. I love elves. Malekith was the greatest thing ever. I want all the new elves. They also look much better from a competitive viewpoint compared to Deepkin.
Wow, this post made me super depressed about playing Idoneth now as it's going to be my first AoS army ever....everyone (even the store owners) tried to get me to buy either Khorne or Stormcast....but seriously demons and paladins are so...overused.....why I wanted something different, something fresh. Sorry to hear that you had such crappy luck with your army, I'm still going full in with Idoneth even if they are not competitive.

Heartrenders grab objectives better and for less points, while Ishlaenn are considerably tankier and faster if you need a soak, albeit for 20 points more.
Regarding their output, from 9" range you'd expect 3-4 wounds against 4+ save, which is atrocious (15 hits > 7-8 wounds > 3-4 saves) and in practice you won't get more than one or two of these volleys a game, certainly not at full strength.
Meanwhile your single shots at 18" you'd be lucky to sneak more than a wound through against a 4+
The most use they've been for me is forcing the enemy to shoot them rather than Thralls using allegiance ability, or using them to bodyblock a charge for a turnAwesome I'll look at the Heartrenders and then also see if the Allopex and the Leviadon's shooting will help....I just think a form of range might be advantageous.

I have now ordered myself some eels and additional thralls, would it also be wise to get some range units or just use the range weapons of my other units?

I'm looking at building my very first army ever for age of sigmar and the Idoneth was my first pick due to aesthetics.
I've never built a list before and only ever played three tutorial games in total (I have played other table top games like warmahordes and bushido). So what I have on hand which I bought on release day is the following:
1 xAkhelian Leviadon
10 x Namarti Thralls
1 x Akhelian Allopex
1 x Isharann Soulscryer
1 x Isharann Tidecaster
1 x Akhelian King
1 x Lotann, Warden of the Soul Ledgers
1 x Eidolon of Mathlann (have not decided which aspect to build him as of yet)I would love your input on a list and what I need to buy in addition to create a decent competitive army.

Thanks, this really does give me something to work off of, I will have a look and see how they play and maybe toss in some more thralls or maybe get some reavers for the future as I don't like the lack of ranged support
