AoS 2 - Ironweld Arsenal Discussion

Welcome one and all to the grand opening of AoS2 - IRONWELD ARSENAL DISCUSSION (or Let's Chat: Ironweld Arsenal 2.0 if you'd rather) As we move into the second edition of Age of Sigmar this thread will exist as the one-stop destination to post and read Ironweld tactics, army lists, painted and converted models, background and anything else you can think to talk about. I will be regularly updating this OP when second edition AoS is out linking to new versions of my unit breakdowns and other tactics posts for the new version of the game (in depth tactics articles to finally appear when I've played a few games of the new edition and got a handle on it!), as well as anything else interesting posted by other members of the community. You say you're new to the game, collect Stormcast, have never heard of the "Ironheld Admirals" and would like to know who they are? The Ironweld Arsenal is composed of a cherry-picked list of all coolest units from the Dwarfs and Empire, the two coolest armies from Warhammer Fantasy Battle (the little heard of rectangle-focused game that preceded Age of Sigmar). Combining da Vinci style feats of artisan engineering with an Acme-level passion for blowing things to smithereens, the Ironweld Arsenal are the armoured fist, heavy support and air force of the Free Cities. Regrettably having no batteline units of their own, the Ironweld lend their services out to any Order army with good taste, with Ironweld war machines filling the much needed battlefield niches that the other factions lack the cannonballs to fill. IRONWELD RESOUCES: (to be added to I swear) Eight Lamentations: Spear of Shadows - Excellent Ironweld-centred AoS Black Library novel by @JReynolds, giving us our closest look into the Ironweld Arsenal so far! The old Ironweld Arsenal thread - I'm not holding myself responsible if the tactics in there get you trashed in the new edition, but hey, you might get something interesting out of it. My Ironweld Arsenal wishlist 26/6/18 - Fair warning, starts out reasonable, gets weird. Cogfort weird. Big thanks to @Chris Tomlin for letting me make this thread, I look forward to keeping it updated and continuing to push the Ironweld Arsenal with the rest of the community. Battleline Organ Guns for GHB 2019!
  2. Hi All, I want to get started with AoS 2.0 using more or less the old "Empire", so a mixture of Free People, Ironweld Arsenal, Collegiate Arcane and Devoted to Sigmar. I already read through a couple of posts and list suggestions. Before I order the first miniatures and start painting I wanted to check if this list does make sense The idea is to have a core I can build upon. I am especially uncertain with warmachines and wizards. Maybe a different warmachine and instead of the wizard the hurricanum? Happy for every comment and suggestion! Thanks, Stephan
  3. Hi! I like the flavour and fluff of the Warhammer world and the classic fantasy tropes. I've started an Empire army around 2004 and I am still painting it to this day (I had long breaks ). I'm not a gamer so I don't care about rules, what's playable and new editions (I was disappointed about introducing space marines in fantasy tough). Anyways I will post everything I did so far. Bare in mind it's content from over the years so the level is uneven. Hope you like it, and I'm sorry in advance for a huge image dump or dubble posts. Content in order from oldest to newest. Warrior Priests of Sigmar Marco Colombo Ostermark swordsmen Knight panthers Knight Panther banner details Grandmaster and KP details. Mercenary ogres including Ogrix and Stuntix First diorama. Gotrek and Felix after a battle with a troll. More stuff in later posts.

    WiP full kitbash SCE barbcast

It's time to grind! Oh, wait let me back up. I'm currently basing my first AoS army (beastclaw in my other thread), and came across some headless stormcast on the cheap. What dynamic poses and great looking armor and details! The masks, while cool, rob them of some character though (I know that's the point, as a visual metaphor for losing their humanity during reforgings) and that's a fine choice, but My Dudes will be different. Gigantic, manly barbarians that worship Old Sigmar, the god of war, the uniter of tribes, the emperor who crushed nagash under the weight of his hammer. In short, they worship this guy: What they lack in religious etiquette they make up for in enthusiasm, and Current Sigmar, in his wisdom (and patience), reforges these mighty and misguided warriors anyway. So who's heads look sweet enough for barbarian lords sce? Fyreslayers! Huge beards, huge muscles, and huge mohawks - these stormcast feature me trying a bunch of conversions for the first time. So, back to the grind - I snuck my plastic army men into work and put them to the band saw and the bench grinder! Cutting a liberator prime and aspiring chaos champion in half, and grinding down collar, neck, and chest areas of 22 stormcast to make more room for the beards. I'm happy with how it turned out. Current progress: 10 Paladin Protectors, particularly happy with the protector-prime. The three currently handless heroes, from left to right: Lord Celestant, Lord Castellant, Knight-Heraldor. The celestant will have a retributor hammer casually laying over his shoulder like a woodsman's axe. I'm thinking of keeping the castellant bald I think it's a good look for him. The knight is an upper-half aspiring chaos champion with impaling spear and lower-half liberator prime with a ton of carving, greenstuff inside his body, and a belt from someone else. Yes, the toot horn will be held over his head like the mighty spear Up next: assemble the 10 liberators and get some stones for bcr bases and snow!

  6. Hey all! So I've been playing around with this allies system a bit with my SE, Empire and Nurgle forces. I lean heavily in favor of my Empire these days and I do like the idea of taking my hurricanum with my Stormcast. But... has allies taken away the ability for Empire to field artillery en mass? I mean, I have 5 Empire Great Cannons, 2 hellfire volley Gun, a mortar, a Rocket Battery and a Steam Tank but am I now only able to take 20% of my list as Iron weld arsenal? Can I still field my Empire Great Cannons as freeguild (as technically they are not the Iron weld arsenal ones) meaning they don't count towards my use of allies points? Not to mention I want to fit my Hurricanum into my list which is near impossible to do if your taking Iron weld arsenal gear. My fear is I have just stumbled across the one thing to come with GHB2017 that kills my love of the Empire after having so much AWESOME stuff in it Note: I am not hating on GHB2 at all, I love the book, love the whole thing, yes even allies! lol.

  9. Of all the mortal realms, perhaps the least traveled among them is the place named Ulgu. Shadow magic personified, it is a plane of shifting continents, ominous skies, endless grey crags, and home to demonic fogs. In ancient times, before Chaos ruled over all but Sigmar’s throne, explorers would not deign to venture there. They feared the realm of dread illusion would swallow them whole, or worse face the wrath of a baleful king left over from another world, like the patron god of men. Through winding valleys and hidden pathways stands a solitary fortress, larger than any like it across the mortal realms. The earth around it is serene and unchanging, but by no means beautiful. The castle stands as an anchor of logic, holding its surroundings in place while violent change and constant misdirection leave the rest of Ulgu an unknowable terror. It is here that a mysterious benefactor took the castle as their own, and sought to fill it with stewards to keep it, and proud knights to defend it. The master of the castle knew well this King of Shadow, once named Malekith. Long ago, Malekith was a distant blood relative, and also a most hated foe. The benefactor saw the city of stone as an opportunity, a way to garrison many souls in everlasting watch over an old enemy. Any shelter it may provide, any community it may create, any new ideas fostered under its roof, all were secondary to this singular purpose. Not that the benefactor would elucidate this to anyone. Years after the first settlers were led to its bronze gates, the castle-city is home to outcasts, vagabonds, and wanderers who seek a new order of things away an undesired establishment. This is no collection of pirates and thieves, but rather a flourishing city state governed by those deemed unfit to live amongst other mortals, no matter how noble the intentions in their hearts. From this cradle of sanctuary, the denizens of Castle Siebenbur strike from their home into other realms. Far from heavenly Azyr, the fortress in Ulgu stands as a bastion of Order where no other life would dare to defy the might of Chaos. -- This is one of my finished armies that has seen action at the Las Vegas Open, Adepticon, and now an event with the Adepticon crew at Midwest Meltdown. I took roughly a year to plan this army through writing fluff, conversion planning, and color scheme studies. I based this army on an examination of the many aspects I enjoy about fantasy in popular culture, particularly Japanese fantasy video games and their color palettes. Not the anime or cel-shaded games, but more visceral titles such as The Last Remnant, Dragon's Dogma, and Dark Souls to name a few. I have been particularly fascinated for a long time with the muted, organic palettes and the focus on nondenominational ornamentation... I could go on and on about why certain aspects of the army look as they do, but putting that all into a single post would take longer than I have in one sitting. So here's some minis to start with, I'll add more with bits of fluff as I go. No critique necessary. I know what looks bad and why. I have learned from what I rushed in this army and improved greatly in my upcoming Celestial Vindicators force. This army was rushed to completion, and nothing will change that, but it is certainly my most narrative driven army and that is what makes it beyond impressive and special in my opinion. It's not bad on the table either, I came in the top third of players at Adepticon 2017 with this lot.

Need help 1k Free People/Empire list

Hey guys my first time list building and buying models. I really like the empire and free people but I would like to know what's competitive before I go out there buying whatever I feel like. Here's the current list I was thinking about running with. I am currently just looking to build a 1k list to get into the game but that may be a subject to change. Order: Heroes: Freeguild General (100) Battleline: 30 Handgunners (300) 10 Guards (80) Units: 10 Guards (80) 5 Pistoliers (140) Artillery: Cannon (180) Battalion: State Troop Detachment (120) 1000/1000 points The basic Idea: so it's my first list so I'm not quite sure what I'm doing but my basic Idea was to use my battalion and general bonuses in order to buff my handgunners to be total beasts. The cannon is there in case the enemy is trying to out range me staying away from the handgunners. The pistoliers are only there for the battalion but the mobility is probably very useful. Alright so a few questions I have: 1. I was thinking of getting a Hurricanum would this unit be useful for a 1000pt army or not? 2. Is my battalion really that much of a bonus for me or would it be best to replace it with 2 Witch Hunters, maybe a warrior priest? 3. People say guards are a nice defense for a frontline but how about using Demigryph Knights? Thank you very much guys I am really looking forward to some feedback

    Freeguild- MSU or large units?

Hello, I have a question for the experienced Freeguild Generals here: In the world that was State Guard and crossbowmen and Handgunners were to be fielded in large numbers (plus detachments). And even now they get bonuses for consisting of 20+ models. But I see many lists with min-sized units. Why is that so, the buffs from Hurricanum and Co. are better, the lists more flexible? What's your advice? Though I have 100+ State Guard Models I would to build much more command models, standard bearers... You know what I mean. Any help would be very appreciated, thanks!

    Need artillery advice

I'm a totally new Freeguild player planning for an infantry/handgun style army, and I wanted to get opinions on the artillery available. From what I've learned through searching the forum, any crewed artillery must be kept out of range of enemy ranged units or the crew will simply be gunned down. I also read a lot of comments suggesting things like the Luminark and such are better because they are self contained and have no crew to kill. I'm just curious as a new player if veterans find artillery useful and which they prefer. Also how to best protect them from things that can show up from table edges and rush them. I also noticed in the Order Errata that the Empire Cannon is still a unit (and the Mortar I assume) seperate from the dwarf cannon, and that a Gunmaster within 1" can buff it since they still have the keywords Human and Engineer. Would you recommend this combo at all?

    Empire 2000pt list, first try

I wanted to see if this idea is crazy, it's my first try at building an Empire list so please be critical. Also please point out if I've done something blatantly illegal, it's my first try at a compendium army. Empire General w/ Stately War Banner 100pts -Inspiring x2 Battlemages (Amber and Grey) 200pts Volkmar the Grim 100pts Celestial Hurricanum w/ Wizard 320pts -Phoenix Stone 20 State Troops with Sword/Shield 160pts 30 State Troops with Halberds 240pts 30 Handgunners 300pts 20 Greatswords 320pts 5 Pistoleers 140pts State Troop Detachment 120pts (the Greatswords are part of this, the Pistoleers are not) If I'm reading it right I have another artefact and no idea who or what to use. Also not sure if any of my heroes should get horses. Anyway, please commence the criticism and tear this list to shreds, I haven't started collecting this army yet.

  18. Hi! Just before the Old World exploded I painted 20 knights panther. I am a slow painter and I have very little hobby time, so this took me a while. As compendium scrolls are now being disallowed at many tournaments, I am no longer able to use them as Empire Knights in tournaments. The last tournament I went to disallowed compendium but allowed TK and Brets, and the TO allowed me to run them as Brettonian Knights of the Realm. Now, the next tourney will ban Brett's also, so I was wondering if there are any good "counts as" warscrolls for my beloved knights?
  19. My Empire army in 8th edition was a pretty solid tournament army and I knew at some point I was going to have to rebase it all. When the Shattered Dominion bases were released from GW I decided these would be perfect as a starting point. However there were a number of things I wasn't happy about. When I got the bases I started off by sanding and texturing sections, and also obscuring a lot of the skulls as they are a bit too flat and comical looking for my liking. Instead I glued actual resin skulls over the top of the moulded ones. I then undercoated the whole sprues with GW brown spray. Painting wise I just went over them fairly quickly, doing standard ground and metals. I used Blood for the Blood God mixed with nun oil in the cracks, and then added the GW tufts on the ground bits. The models themselves were just super glued in place. After this was done I had my first go at snowballing. I used the new Valhallan Blizzard paint from GW, which i just applied in scoops and brushed into piles and mounds. Its a very light paint so you can put it over the foliage and it looks like snow cover. One of the things that I have always found odd about snow on miniatures is how you apply it - do you do it all over the base, or is it just random melting clumps? I tried to do something in between, so once the whole thing had dried I got some Secret Weapon Mini crushed glass and mixed it with water effects to create quite a runny mixture. I then painted this all over the snow and remaining base to make it sparkle and look more like a melted snow effect. I like how it has worked out, but I'd be interested in other peoples thoughts.
  20. So I rummaged through my bits box recently and came up with enough pieces to make this foot knight. I will hopefully be able to make some more but while I am sure I have enough knightly pieces I don't have enough arms and legs. This is just a test model to see if I like the scheme. I very rarely paint blue and I am struggling to get some contrast into the shading and highlights. Still for a relatively quick job I am happy with this. So who knows maybe a regiment of these will be gracing a table in the near future?

    1000 points army

I have not played fantasy before and was thinking about starting an AOS army: Dieter von Steinhof - general 100 Udo Zimmermann - priest 80 Franz "Verrückt” Braunsweiger - steam tank 300 Maas Saxen – handgunners leader 100 Leopold Plecken – guard leader 80 Malahir ”The Shadow” - Shadowblade 120 Morahti – 220 1000 (english is not my first languish) ”They will hunts us down and hang us for treason... but not if we find it... Then we will be heroes and more important... we wil have a fighting chance!" The bald priest whispered to the two other men around the table. Dieter looked at his two old friends for a moment and drank from his beer. "Let's do it! I am only a Captain of the City Guard, but I know that Maas Saxen and Leopold Plecken will follow me... so that is 10 handgunners and 10 guards." Franz Braunsweiger emptied his beer and called for another round." Very well, you know I am in as long as it involves driving Gisela.. happy days ahead!” Udo frowned ”It will not be happy days!! It will be noticed that we... and especially that dammed tank of yours is missing... and people will not be happy..." Franz was about to said something about his beloved steam tank, but new beers where brought to their table and they all went silent. Dieter still smiled and then said "What a group we are; A fighter, a priest, and a crazy steam tank commandor set for saving the world...” ”And an Aelf...” They all looked up at the shadow loming over them. ”Aaah Malahir... we did not see you...” ”Pepole don't see me... Unless I want them too. I think it is time I repay my debt to you.” The aelf answered in a low voice. Udo frowned again and said ”So dramatic...Are you bringing that girl of yours when repaying Dieter?” ”You do not like, Morahti?” Malahir ask back. ”Oh no! It is not that... it is just that... she makes me... a little uncomfortable.” Udo and Franz did not look pleased, but Dieter still smiled and said ”We can trust them... and now we have an assassin and a mage in our little party as well... All we need now is a dwarf!” Only Franz laughed and Dieter continued ”...It is settled then... lets change this bloody war!"

    Starting Point

So to kick off the new army I made a quick trade with a buddy looking to clear out some old Empire stuff. He played 8th ed. but just couldnt get into AoS so I was happy to trade him some other game items for this. Here's a pic and then I'll walk through what your looking at: 1 General on foot with hammer and pistol 20 Handgunners 20 Greatswords 30 Freeguild Guard I feel that it's a pretty darn good start since the handgunners and guard are Battleline units and the Greatswords are just absolute blenders in combat. What I really love about this army is the synergy between units. So many bonuses to hit (and sometimes to wound) make this an extremely deadly force. I can get those guns to hit on a 2+/2+ (not without some effort of course) and the fact that they have rend can ruin someone's day. The only unit I'm not excited about is the Guard, I just feel like they are incredibly basic. Sure, they can become good with the same buffs as anyone else; Im just not as amazed at them as the other units. As you can see in the picture, I opted to base them all on 32mm. Some local guys were telling me that 25mm would have been better but frankly Im not fond of that idea. I already have a bunch of spammy 25mm troops in my Death army, so im not looking for that. Truthfully, with the wide stance of the swordmen (Guard) and long barrels on the handgunner, I just think 32mm look better. Now that everyone is based I'll begin the painting assembly line. Im looking to go for a black and purple scheme which I think will make them stand out nicely. Now I looked up the points at my local store (The GHB isnt released to the public yet) and this comes in at 860 points. My goal is to get it to 1000 and start playing (Read: Winning) games with them. There are a few directions I could go here and I'm nt set on one or another: -drop 10 of the Greatswords (bringing me back down to 700 points) and add a tank -Add a few more Guard and try the Free Guild Regiment formation
