The nature of variability is such that you always need to be a bit careful when drawing conclusions from limited samples. I think I'll develop this point in detail at some point in my blog, but for now I'll throw out a couple of relevant things.
First, here's a quick view of just how much variability can skew results, and how much sample you actually need to start normalizing results. Here's distribution of D6 rolls across 36, 72, 100, 1200, and 6000 rolls.
Second, there's a decent simulator HERE. It doesn't have total functionality, but it does reflect a good output that captures the variability fo dice and the fickleness of the dice gods.
For example, here's the expected damage output of 15 Black Knights and Steeds on the charge buffed with an extra attack against a 4+ Save:

I'm not quite as cynical as you, but there is value in the caveat nonetheless. 👌

Same goes for „hit points“ .40 block has 40, regenerating 2-4d3 each round 4-8 so roughly 6... his chalice gives the lord a one time d6 (3-4) and if he puts his life in danger (melee) he might get 2 for killing a model, if he survives the counterattacks...
I know you were making a different kind of point, and I know the limitations of math etc., but I'll throw this out here anyway because it ties into other things I'm working on.
A 40 block of Skeletons actually has 33 "effective wounds" against no-rend attacks once you factor in saves and battelshock (meaning if you can hit a 40 skeleblob with 33 wounds before saves you will likely wipe the entire unit). If you can hit them with 25 wounds of rend 1 damage you will likely wipe them.
VLOZD has 42 "effective wounds" against no-rend attacks, and 28 against rend 1. And that's not including any artefacts.
Of course if your dice hate you, results may vary. And if you opponent doesn't try to bring overwhelming force to bear, and instead makes the mistake of trying to slowly chip away at your skeles, then the suckers will last forever.

That is one of the coolest things I've seen. Amaze-balls.

I have a very similar conversion in my hobby queue coming up! I was thinking of using the Knight of Shrouds steed. I haven't gotten around to fitting parts yet, so haven't sized or eyeballed. But it is literally what I'll be working on in a few weeks. Please let me know what you try out and which way you take it. It looks great!

Nice work Fulkes. Lots of analysis there.
It was an interesting read for me because I have a strong bias toward defensive and/or tactical Command Traits and Artifacts (Aura, Blur, Amulet, Dopplegagner...), and haven't really spent time analyzing the offensive ones to the extent that you have. Part of that is because of my assumption that since CTs and Artefacts only effect the hero's attacks, and not the mount's, that the output really isn't there. Your post got me thinking.
So I whipped up some math using a VLoZD base. I considered both Walking Death and Swift Strikes, and Ghyrstrike. Now this is straight averages math, and obviously variance exists, but it's better than nothing. Format is average damage throughput against 3+/4+/5+/6+ saves:
- VLoZD with Favored Retainers (Baseline): 8/10/12/14
- VLoZD with FR and Walking Death: 10/13/15/17
- VLoZD with FR and Swift Strikes: 10/12/15/18
- VLoZD with FR, WD and Ghyrstrike: 11/14/16/19
- VLoZD with FR, SS and Ghyrstrike: 11/14/18/21
Long story short:
- Walking Death gives 2/3/3/3 extra damage
- Swift Strikes gives 2/2/3/4 extra damage
- Adding Ghyrstrike to Walking Death gives another 1/1/1/2 damage
- Adding Ghyrstrike to Swift Death gives another 1/2/3/3 damage

I wish! As a relatively new/novice player I don't have a big cadre of opponents to call over! Luckily I've tried to get my woman into it and she's been somewhat receptive.
Cool. I'll bring my woman and we'll have a couples night!

I tried to read your post, but your profile picture kept making me laugh.

I don't know how any tournaments handle this kind of problems.
Really curious about this too. I often like to do custom work on my bases, not to be gamey, but because it looks cool. And now I'm worried I might have f---d myself?!

Here we can’t even talk about where the heroic part of the coven throne ends and where the mount starts without things getting heated.
We can if we try! Deeply and truly sorry to all... I tried to stay rational. My forehead is still bloody from the wall.
I will be better! Don't give up on me!

Cut the legs off your minis so they are an inch shorter to balance it out? Lol.
Couldn't you just agree with your friend to measure LoS from a point 1" lower?

What do you think about people who takes "for example" the necromancer from Mortis Egine and puts him on a base himself and play him as an Necromancer unit? Same with the Coven throne Vampires ?
I use the Mortis Engine Necro as a regular Necro. Not sure I understand why it would be a problem?

Picked up a used FEC lot on the cheap. Never played them before and don't have the tome, but curious if I have something decently playable here, or close to playable with some minor purchases? Here's what was in the lot:
- 1x GKoT
- 1x Terrorgheist
- 1x GK on Foot
- 19x Ghouls
- 3x Crypt Flayers
- 1x Crypt Haunter Courtier
- 16x Crypt Horrors
- 1x Vargulf Courtier
- 1x Crypt Infernal Courtier
- 1x Crypt Ghast Courtier
I have another 9 Vargheists I'm sure I could proxy in as more Flayers, and lots of Death that could be allied in as appropriate.
Thx.

Question based on the image below:
My units are in Blue, and Unit B has the Doppleganger Cloak. My combat phase.
- My activation: Unit A attacks enemy 1 and wipes it out.
- Opponent activates, chooses unit 2 but cannot attack due to artefact.
- My activation: Unit B attacks enemy 3.
- Opponent activates unit 3 and attacks B
- My activation: no units to activate
Here's the question: Can opponent now re-activate unit 2 and attack, or was that attack lost entirely due to step 2 in the sequence above?
Thanks. -
Appreciate you @Goddin; you've given me some great food for thought.
If I take the plunge here, would love to chat a bit about your experiences actually playing this list since you've done well with it.

Lean into this sentiment with Legion of Blood. Go very elite, with a few hard to shift objective sitters.
Neferata
VLoZD
VLoZD
Bloodseeker Palaquin
Court of Nuhlahmia Battalion
Chainrasp Horde x20
Chainrasp Horde x20
Chainrasp Horde x20
Command Point
2240 points total.
3 Command points to start, 4 drops, 2 artifacts. See the conversation ianob and I had 2-3 pages back.
This list (with my tweaks or his) is very competitive at 2k points. I took my first loss in several months (I play on average once a week) this past weekend with this list, and it was only due to me forgetting a realm-specific garrison rule that let my opponent teleport to my home objective on round 1.
Nice. This is right along where my head has been going with this problem.... double-dragon blood batallion. I had provisionally been thinking 3x5 wolves and 9 Spirit Hosts, but 3 blobs of rasp is interesting, and 1 drop less.

Well, Nagash rocked Nova...
Don't want to play Nagash. I think it would be hard for me to do anything different or better than all of the others who are playing it, and I'm not good enough (yet ?) to outperform with the same list.
11 minutes ago, Honk said:but at 2250 double morghast, terrorgheist blackknights could be doable. Then some grimghast and done is fast&furious. With high bravery debuff also the mortis engine could be crazy
Not sure I'm feeling it. And the inevitable death versus death match-up sounds almost unwinnable in this set-up. But I could be thinking about it all wrong...
14 minutes ago, Honk said:or you play it trve:
2x VloZd,2xnecro
2x10 bloodknights, 3x5 wolves
2240 baahm in your face
Ha! The benefit here is that games should be over fairly quickly, for better or for worse.
15 minutes ago, Honk said:no LoB to be seen
Part of the reason I want to try it. But it seems really hard since it doesn't do much to further our two strongest elements: magic and regenerating hordes. It seems anything Blood can do, other factions can do better. Which is a shame really. I might just go Sacrament if I don't get inspired.
-
So does anyone have a competitive blood list they are proud of to share for inspiration? I have a 2250 pt tourney in a couple of months, and I want to try out LoB. Need to start my hobby soon if I'm going to make it.
-
Also had Cogs, QSS and two extra CPs.
-
Deathmarch and Castellans of Crimson Keep are the only ones with just the Death keyword instead of a specific Legion. Yes, all battallions gain all Legion keywords, but that doesn't help with regards to the question about Soulblight. So, since Crimson Keep just has the generic Death keyword, I assume it IS legal for Soulblight, unlike the Legion specific battallions.
-
It has Death keyword, not any Legion. So I assume it's legal?

I won a local tourney with a 3 dragon list (one was Vhodrai). In a semi-competitive environment, it makes target priority hard for the enemy, and it is just so much damage coming in so fast.
I'm seriously considering the 4 dragon list, painting being the major stop on it. VLoZD x4, wolves x3, Chronomatic Cogs.
PS, being more serious, Nef, VLoZD x2, Vhodrai, wolves x3, Chronomatic Cogs looks good.
PPS, VLoZD x2, Vhodrai, Reiknor, Cogs, 10 wolves x2, 20 Chainrasp Horde might be my new list.
Every time someone says "you don't have enough bodies for objectives" I just think "I will kill the other guy's bodies so fast it won't matter."
I really like your PPS! Adding Reiknor is an inspired decision, and goes a long way toward mitigating my concern with these kinds of lists that want to use Cogs but have no casting buffs. He can be tricksy in other ways too.
Also a decent amount of bodies and screening to play around with. I'd be tempted to experiment with dropping one of the VLoZD for a unit of Blood Knights, a Vamp Lord and an extra CP (?).
Nice work man.
