I finished a selection of heroes and photographed them together. Thankfully they sort of work together! You can see the green theme for the aelves on the right and the blue theme for the humans and dwarves on the left.

I used an Isharann Tidecaster as another battlemage, snipping off the watery bits to make it work on land:

Finally, I got through 10 Ironbreakers. It's not technically "the first unit" completed as they'll be played as a unit of 30, but it sort of counts?

Not sure what I'll work on next- the plan is to intersperse 10 ironbreakers between other units as I'll go mad painting another 20 in one go!

I realised i hadn't gotten my full army out, so I did!

This is all the Cities models I have, but is well over 2,000pts. I'll be running the army as different cities and swap in models depending on what works in each city, but to start, it'll be a Hallowheart (or Magic type city using Hallowheart rules). All armies will have Huron, the Nomad King, as it's general.
    Here's the full list-
    Huron, Nomad Prince

General, comes with 10 Pheonix Guard as his retinue. All elves will be forest themed with green cloaks.  His adjutant will be one of the battlemages, or the Runelord or the Warden King, depending on the build.
    Battlemages and Sorceress

The battlemages are composed of the regular battlemage models, an Isharan Tidecaster with some bits snipped off and the staff replaced with a sisters of the thorn one and a Gloriel Summerbloom model, again with the ball replaced with a sisters of the thorn staff.
    Warden King and Runelord

These guys will be used to buff the 30 Ironbreakers.
    Sisters of the Thorn

I've always loved these models, plus they're wizards that move far! I've worked up two of the bases to show the forest theme I'm going for-

All city inhabitants- the humans and dwarves- will have cobbled street basing. The elves will have wood themed basing. Huron, reflecting the fact he straddles both the city and the wilds outside, is sitting on the edge of the forest, with half his base having cobbled street effect.
    Gyrocopters

These fellas are just fun. Models are great and they're not that expensive points wise.
The Last Argument of Kings, Greywater Artillery Company

I like the crew models for these and always good to have some shooting in the army.
    Luminark of Hysh

I always need to have an obnoxious base for any army, and this is the Cities one. A bridge over a stream! I'll fill the river with poured resin, something I've never done until the Sisters of the Thorn basing.

That's it! Currently getting through the Sisters of the Thorn and loving doing the basing.

I'm not that happy with the stags themselves- I've just done the GW base/highlight type scheme and it looks a little simple, but in any case the basing is done! This is a good illustration of what the elf bases will look like- lots of different tufts and some of ******'s excellent Wild Meadow static grass sheets.

The Celestial Hurricanum is now complete! It's about 10hrs paint time total, though with a model this size that's a speed paint pretty much! Love the details on this model.

Likely next model will be the Dwarf Runelord as a break from such a complex model!

My plan is to paint most of the army relatively quickly, but to make them bright and stand out on the tabletop. The aesthetic is a little old school- bright and colourful- as homage to WHFB, so the usual layer/highlight process works well for my purposes.
Here's the Runelord for my army. The colour theming will be Hallowheart blue for all humans and dwarves- they live within the city- and greens and autumnal colours for elves- they live in the forests around the city and emerge to protect the city in times of need.

I've got a pretty big Cities army, now fully primed and zenithaled. Lockdown is the perfect opportunity for me to paint it pretty quick!
Here's the full list of miniatures I have-

Here's the first painted miniatures- the Sorceress, Battlemage, a Gyrocopter and Celestial Hurricanum.

Lots to get through but happy with the colours and basing.

My Ghoul King on Terrorgheist is going to sit on this ludicrous base. I've made some progress on it and the terrorgheist, adding a spooki boi to the back of the base too. Once this is done, I have 60 ghouls to paint before completing my initial list for FEC- though lots of horrors and 2 more dragons to finish all the models! Initial list is looking like this:
    Allegiance: Flesh Eater Courts
    - Grand Court: Blisterskin

    Leaders
Abhorrant Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist (420)
    - Lore of Madness: Bonestorm
    - Mount Trait: Gruesome Bite
    Abhorrant Archregent (240)
    - General
    - Trait: Hellish Orator

Finished 40 ghouls- another 60 to go! Simple base coat/wash/drybrush for these guys so i can concentrate on the basing for the bigger models. Quick job on the charnel throne too- airbrush basecoat and shading then wash/drybrush. Trying some skin shading on the second Arch Regent and it looks ok...sorta.

This is the base for the second terrorgheist. I really like how aggressive the terrorgheist pose is, sort of wedge shape with it's head near the ground roaring. I made this base to exaggerate this to an extreme- it now sits on a steep wedge itself, angled down almost vertically, to accentuate that aggressive pose. Around the back there'll be a Cairn Wraith escaping the crypt.

Base coat was done with an airbrush, then used some AK enamel earth effects, washes and drybrushing.

Finished my first set of crypt horrors and a crypt infenal courtier.

I went for a light pale skin to contrast with the grey ruin bases. I'm using autumnal colour tufts and leaves to set off the skin tone. I've also assembled my Varghulf Courtier, based on the Dweller in the Dark model for the Middle Earth game. I switched out the head for a courtier head, put him on a scenic resin base so he's more impressive on the table (big issue with FEC is figuring out the different between a horror/flayer, crypt haunter/crypt infernal and their respective courtiers, so all my courtiers and haunter/infenal models will be on bases that make them taller than the rest!) The Varghulf has a victim held in it's right hand- there will be huge amounts of gore coming from the torso, torn arms of the victim and claws of the varghulf, in a similar method to the gore for the crypt horrors.

I've made some small progress on the base colours for the terrorgheist base too (plus here it is posed on the base!)

    I've assembled :
    Terrorgheist
    Zombie Dragon
    6 crypt horrors
    1 crypt haunter courtier
    3 crypt ghast courtiers
    60 crypt ghouls
    1 crypt infernal courtier
    1 arch regent.
    Still to make-
    3 crypt horrors
    9 crypt flayers
    1 varghulf courtier
    1 archregent
    Another terrorgheist!

Here's the start of the base for the zombie dragon:

The idea is the tomb banshee will be coming out of the crypt- she is the ghost of Arthur's wife-to-be. The ghoul king will hopefully be on foot next to the dragon, just need to figure out how i can pose him!

I've always like the Flesh Eater background story and had wanted to make a force around Arthurian legends- initially it was going to be an Imperial Knights force for 40k. But with the new battletome (and Carrion Empire!) I realised Flesh Eaters were the perfect army!
    The Story
King Arthur, the Once and Future King of Albion, was betrayed by she who was dearest to him. His betrothal to the daughter of a powerful baronial family was meant to usher in a time of peace and prosperity but he was betrayed. The father of the bride, a Vampire Count, cursed Arthur with delusion of the Carrion King. In the primal rage that overtook him, he killed his wife-to-be, thinking her to be an agent in disguise from her father's court. Believing his beloved to be imprisoned by her Vampire father, Arthur and his court of noble knights seek to free her and destroy the Vampiric Barony once and for all.
The bases will be ruins of the capital of Albion. Chivalric banners and penants will hang from collapsed columns and lie torn on the floors.
King Arthur, The Once and Future King, Arch Regent

    The Knights of the Court

    Dragon Base
This first base is for a Terrorgheist. As it landed on the ruins, it split the floor below, revealing masses of skeletons and bodies underneath.

First unit of evocators done! Mix between Soul Wars and regular box. Unfortunately, these guys are indistinguisahable from my Knight Incantor from a distance, so I'll have to think up a colour to add to the robes of the knight-incantor. Blue maybe?? Or some white lines?

  14. hughwyeth
I'm one of the few that kept the stormcast from the soul wars box and sold the nighthaunt. I've decided to go with Anvils of the Heldenhammer as I like the black and gold and I tested out the colour schemes on some easy-to-build liberators. Here's the first finished model- the force will be entirely Sacrosanct chamber!
  15. hughwyeth
    So i finished him!
I started him halfway through working on my Glottkin, which I worked on entirely by hand, no airbrush. I think with massive models like this, the airbrush saves so much time and more importantly, gives a lot more consitency to the shading than doing it by hand! It's been a struggle with the Glottkin to get the same shading over the whole model, whereas with the GUO, it was done in 15 mins with an airbrush!

  16. hughwyeth
Having taken a break from the GUO for the London GT, where I fielded the Glottkin instead, I'm back to detailing him now.

The speckling issue with the airbrush basecoat is now much less apparent after some layers of washes and detailing have been applied! I'm still unsure if the speckling is an issue with the cheap chinese airbrush I'm using or an issue with how I'm maintaining it.

I completed the basecoat on the great unclean one with three colours- a light green called Dead Flesh, a dark green called.......Dark Green, and a bright pink/red for the wounds.

It looks very airbrushed right now, which is not a look I like, but hopefully some washes and detailing with a brush will help!
I found consistency with this airbrush to be pretty difficult. I'll be painting with perfect coverage, nice smooth gradients of colour, and then a minute later it's all spotty! I've found putting some thinner into the pot first and then the paint, mixing it up and spraying through a bit seems to help with coverage. I was also painting at around 15psi which seems to have been too weak, so I'm now using 25psi.
  18. hughwyeth
The airbrush arrived along with airbrush cleaning fluid, an airbrush cleaning station and this airbrush paint station from HobbyZone (my whole desk is covered in their stuff, so I felt confident this thing would be great, and it is!)

With the airbrush all set up I decided to test out on a Gnarlmaw and base coat it. Success! Now on to the Great Unclean One.

Having base coasted with Vallejo Primer black, I then used GW's White Scare Air in an attempt to shade a little before putting the base coat on.
    Which was a mistake.
As is my experience with all GW's whites and some of their bright yellows, it came out chalky and lumpy. I tried making sure the paint was stirred thoroughly, I added thinner, but nothing helped so I stopped there and waited to get some Vallejo white. The Vallejo white came out smooth as and worked great for this highlighting stage.
Finally I basecoated the whole thing in Vallejo Game Air Dead Flesh, as per Terry's excellent video. All these stages had to be repeated for each head and arm choice so it took a while! Happily it's a very smooth finish, so the "chalkiness" from the GW white that was on some of the model didn't come through this final layer. It was much less chunky that the GW white rattlecan spray, which I've had some pretty bad experiences with!

Stuff I leanred from this first session:
-Don't use GW whites ever again.
-Every paint behaves differently through an airbrush. I didn't think it would be the case, but Vallejo white requires different air pressure than Dead Flesh and seems to come out slower too. I think testing out every paint on some paper first is going to be required so I know exactly what I'm working with.
-The cheap pump is great but can get very hot. I'm not sure how it would do after a day's painting session. I've used it for about 2 hours straight at most.
-The cheap airbrush is fine, but maintenance can be a bit frustrating- it has a side gravity feed, not just a cup on top, which seems to introduce an additional corner for paint to get stuck in! From tutorials and videos, all airbrushes seem to need this maintenance, so it's not really an issue. As mentioned above, different paints behave quite differently- sometimes not much paint is coming through, or it sprays out in a wider area. I'm not sure if this is the brush or my maintenance which isn't thorough or consistent enough.

So I've just ordered the Switzer AS186 (From here) as my first airbrush. It's gotten some good reviews  as a first airbrush. I'm intending to follow this tutorial. Terry is an excellent teacher and he uses airbrushing for basecoating and the base colours, with zenithal highlighting, which I think should be manageable for a first time user. The rest is washes, drybrushing and regular layering techniques.
    I'm a little apprehensive of using a £70 airbrush/compressor kit!
I'll post again when I receive the airbrush with initial impression.
