  1. This week Cities Of Sigmar Round Table articles almost got me to buy the box, but I resisted :P Very interesting view of the CoS design and conceptual process anyway.

And I'll still get the (generic) Battletome and the Warcry Wildercorps for sure.

P.-S. ; one little thing bugs me. Phil Kelly mentions the Seeds of Hope - the first 3 cities in Ghyran - as being in the fluff "since Second Edition", which isn't quite right. The Season Of War campaign is summer 2016, AoS just being 1 year old at the time. Strange, as he must have written the first fluff pieces for them himself.

I've linked the old PDF for those interested in the very first Cities of Sigmar background. It was available for free on WarCom and AOS Facebook page IIRC. Good times :)

    Ohhh, I really like this.

So if I understand it correctly, the designers wanted this to be:

    • MAIN focus: what the average person from any realm/city looks like in an army, not just in general (i.e.: city life)
    • Low(er) fantasy than most other armies, serving as a point of comparison to really highlight the strangeness of everything else

That's IMO quite well done and I'm looking forward for the rest of the series.

However I really DISLIKE the fact they keep forgetting that the Warcry Warbands were the first attempt - and success - at showing real life, down to earth Humans from different cultures in the Mortal Realms (probably because it isn't the current marketing focus aka selling CoS kits).

Remember : Chaos Barbarians are still the basic human population of the Mortal Realms. They outnumber the Cities folk by a lot

The basic human prototypes in AOS were the Darkoath Chieftain and the Excelsior Warpriest from Warhammer Quest : Silver Tower.

  3. What I love with 3rd edition is its renewal of AOS 1st ed. Seasons of Wars themes (mostly : post-apocalyptical wilderness in need of taming), but with better worldbuilding (8 years of releases helping).

And what is more "fantasy post-apoc" than constant warfare, survival of the fittest elite orruks aka Ironjawz AND degenerate, cave dwelling subhuman mutants, aka Flesh-eater courts ? I'm so glad we'll get both a good Ironjawz and FEC updates with REIGN OF BRUTE and the Battletome this Winter :)

BTW I'm still not believing that in the next 6 months we'll get the aforementioned large-ish waves for AOS proper (including a new Troggoth for GSG), 6 Warcry Warbands (including Kruleboyz and CoS) and another Underworld season (inc. Destruction gang), alongside the rest of CoS and 2 more Dawnbringers supplements after Reign of Brute ! That's amazing :D

NOT counting side-releases like the Warhammer+ Vampire lady and the Blacktalons Team... Cherry on top : TOW with plastic kits and probably....

A NEW ARMY IN 2024 aka Chorfs :P

the current ones hold very well

They do, brillant models, but they are still WFB kits (and featured in TOW) ! Also, when Dark Elves are retired (for TOW or Malerion's Ulgurothi), Cities of Sigmar should get a few AOSified "Cities Aelves" kits.

Agree with everything else. Gholemkind were first mentioned in the 3rd edition Core Book and in greater details in the Kharadron Battletome indeed. Looking forward to see if the HoR is Valkia or Dechala or someone else !

  5. Sincerely impressed by the amount of work GW put into the Cities of Sigmar lore and its attention to details and general coherence.

I've listed a few opinions and IMO interesting points from the book related to potential new releases or the Dawnbringers Series (related to various armies, hence the post here and not in the Mortal Redesign thread) :

    Spoiler

    • As we know the city of Phoenicium is refered as "doomed" and will probably get destroyed during the event of the Dawnbringers Series. Perhaps the city's doom is related to "Her Highness of Ruin" mentioned in Harbingers.
    • 11 main cities are explored. As Sigmar's sacred number is 12, IMO we should get another one, and it should be Azyrheim. Maybe will get rules for the celestial city one day, with a map of Azyr (BTW the Ghur collectible store Coin is identical to the Azyr one - but the rune of course - meaning its surrounding isn't a pre-map of the Realm of Heaven, alas, @KingBrodd ...)
    • Gholemkind are directed referred as mercenaries working for the Cities of Sigmar. IMO they will be this season third Warcry Order warband after Wildercorps (confirmed) and Kurnothi (rumored).
    • Grombrindal (and Gotrek) get some mentions in the fluff too.
    • It is openly discussed that the (Dark) Aelves could be expelled from the Cities if their duplicity is revealed. To me it is heralding the release of the Malerion faction (we know the Gladitorium is a spying device, and Morathi is already in open rebellion).

In the future, GW should IMO expand (with proper AOS kits) the Aelves by focusing on their Corsairs and Rangers themes (1-3 characters, 2-4 kits of monster, cavalry and infantry) and the Duardin by focusing on their Elite infantry and Warmachine themes (1-3 characters, 2-4 kits of shooty and melee elite troops and cannon / flyers).

Overall, I really like the order put in the range. Even if it means a little less flexibility in the rules, the new look of Freeguild, Dark Aelves (working as potential Proxy) and Dispossessed just works better, is more coherent. I'll get the Battletome, Wildercorp and Command corp for sure :P

    Fusil-Major on Ogor Warhulk
    Inronweld Great Cannon
Pontifex Zenestra, Matriarch of the Great Wheel
Tahlia Vedra Lioness of the Parch
    Wildercorps Hunters

It's a great range, that crowns what we got so far for "baseline Order humans". In AOS1 it was the Excelsior Warpriest (from Warhammer Quest), in AOS2 we got Galen and Doralia Ven Denst and the Cursed City cast, and in AOS3 we got the Hexbane Witch Hunters (from Warhammer Underworld). Interesting and varied sculpts, even if mostly for the Devoted Of Sigmar.

BUT let's remember that the real "baseline humans" from the Mortal Realms - in terms of quantity  - are the basic Chaos Barbarians like the Darkoath and other Warcry warbands (which was the point of that game, showing the cultures of the Mortal Realms). And yes, Chaos Barbarians are still more widespread and numerous than the Order races (according to White Dwarf, Warcry and Slaves to Darkness battletome).

This might be the most visually stunning model GW has ever produced. It literally looks like a painting I had to pick my jaw up from the floor. It deserves GWs model of the year award easily holy heck give the designers a raise a bonus and a lifetime of hi 5s and fist bumps.

100% with you, but you accidentally linked to some random CoS guy while obviously talking about THE HARBINGER OF DECAY, CHAMPION OF GRANDFATHER NURGLE.

@michu I'm sorry you want to cancel your project. TBF I quite dislike the named characters and find some models very busy indeed. The new range while nice won't make me get the Army Set, after all. The Marshalls/Arch-Knight/Cavaliers and the Cannon/Warhulk/Fusiliers are all interesting design directions IMO, the first being classic and ghallagerhesque, the second being innovative.

    Exceptions :

    • CoS Gobbapalooza aka Command Corp (only better : it comes with options whereas the grots do not if I'm not mistaken) : I may get it to paint and convert.
    • Wildercorp warband : I WILL get it for that great game that is Warcry, which will complement the Order cast from Cursed City.

I'm glad I was wrong and that there indeed was 4 new kits to be revealed.

However, I'm mightily worried by the absence of "intact Azyrite building" official talk on WarCom :/:(:P

  8. Okay I need and want in my life the Arch-Knight, Mascot Gargolian, War Surgeon and flute-death guy.

(BTW I love the different re-imaginations of WFB classics. Like the Soul Shepard could be an amethyst wizard coupled with a priest of Morr, etc.)

So, did anybody else read the Yuan Bo short story total war today? I won't lie if Cathay has half of the units shown in TWW when it finally becomes tabletop ready I'll be happy.

Yeah I did yesterday ! Apparently it's from David Guymer who did great things with Duardin in AOS.

That made me re-read the WarCom articles about designing and mapping Cathay to get a sense of the land and the Dragon characters (and also the Watchtower assault fluff part from Tamurkhan : Throne Of Chaos ❤️).

    Loved it.

  10. @Chikout WarCom is currently erratic, they posted a Dawnbringer short story two weeks ago, then four articles last Friday, but no new story, and today now only two articles and zero new model reveal... It's the "Summer low", I guess.

Time to paint the backlog and expect nothing new but the Warhammer+ Models this week !

At least the Seraphon Vanguard box looks good and compliments nicely the Army Set and the other Skinks sets they did.

    Spoiler

Btw I can't see the new CoS army getting a Vanguard set that isn't made of 100% new models, otherwise it will look really strange.

But surely it can't be going up on pre-order next Saturday with 4-6 kits/units left to reveal?

We really just know they'll reveal two more things : 1. Artillery (confirmed on WarCom) and 2. something religious like a War Altar (based on 3d renders seen in the Cult of the Wheel article). That could be Artillery this Monday and Altar the week after, then Box set release the following week-end.

I wouldn't expect more units than those two, if the box indeed mentions 52 warscrolls...

  12. Speaking of updates, Chaos Daemons are generally spoiled release-wise, but the range itself is varyingly old (mostly Lesser Daemons) :

Just to recap (plastic models still sold) :

    • 2008 : Daemonettes and Bloodletters
    • 2010 : Bloodcrushers, Mounted Daemonettes, Horrors of Tzeentch
    • 2012 : Plaguebearers, Nurglings, Seeker Chariot/Hellflayer, Tzeentch Screamers, Flamers of Tzeentch
    • 2013 : Plague Drones, Blood Throne/Skull Cannon, Burning Chariot/Herald of Tzeentch on Chariot, Herald of Nurgle on foot.
    • 2015 : Bloodthirster and later Skarbrand
    • 2016 and beyond : modern AOS plastic kits for every Chaos Gods

Also, Nurgle-related, next year the wonderful Putrid Blightkings kit will be 10 years old. Ouch...

Here's what I'd like to see in the next ten or so years for AoS.

Chorfs as a new book or part of Slaves. Also Darkoath replacing maruaders.

    Kurnothi as part of Slyvaneth

Malerion combined with Dok to make a new book.

    Gitmob expansion for Gloomspite.

    Dispossessed expansion for cities

Tyrion and river temple for Lumineth.

Seraphon style updates for mawtribes, Skaven and BoC.

Expansions with new units for KO, Kruleboyz, Bonesplittas Fyreslayers, IDK, and OBR.

A completely new destruction book and a completely new death book.

That's a good balance of new stuff, expanded stuff and updated stuff while still keep a reasonable number of battletomes.

While they're at it, they should go to a four year edition. If they did this, they could have a mid edition battle box similar to the launch box but tied to a narrative campaign rather than a new edition.

This post is excellent. And I'll further add :

    • Chaos Duardin can and will be and independent army, completing Grand Alliance : Chaos.
    • Malerion Ulgurothi should also get Shadow Daemons (which most probably are a worlbuilding, fluff-only faction like Silent People and Katophrane, alas).
    • Units from Darkling Covens, Dispossessed, Bonesplittaz, Gitmob, Maraudeurs. etc. should get AOS equivalents and/or be sent back to ToW, where they belong originally (aesthetically speaking).
    • Darkoath already are Maraudeurs in everything but name, i.e. Chaos barbarians (but Conanesque in AOS as they are Vikingesque in WFB). Just sent back the old WFB kit, rename the Horsmen kit and we are good to go with 1 Warcry team, two WHU warbands, 4 characters (counting the Exclusive Models), and the "Darkoath Horsmen".
    • AOS as a game and product line doesn't need more new armies at this point, for upgrades and release spotlight reasons, even with a 4-years edition schedule. Orruk Warclans, Gitmobs and Soulblight already contains a great variety of sub-factions for Death and Destruction.
    • Add the like of Gholemkind and Kurnothi units via Warcry, WHU or Warhammer Quest to spice-up factions.

All this should happen in the next four years, as 4th edition will have to live next to TOW.

Oh, and a mid-edition "ETB" dual boxed set working as a mid starter with a narrative campaign is pure genius.

Interesting if they've pulled back the pushing mechanics from ancient Warhammer, I'd assumed they were exaggerating about looking at every edition of Warhammer

I started in 6th ed. and didn't know it was a thing before 6th ! TBF it's probably a way more practical and interesting mechanic than the old "everyone flee in disarray" at the first combat loss...

The "large front unit" really should not hint at large infantry units being the norm again like in 8th, please GW !

Of course I'm more interested in the range and look on the battlefield and in books of The Old World than its rules. I really wish for TOW and AOS to have a distinct design and aesthetic (even if they rightfully are part of the same GW "fantasy" family). Having the exact same Dwarfs models in TOW and AOS is a bit "meh".

And I'm yet not very keen in seeing those old Trolls and Slayers... Aged quite poorly for a "new" game (and Stone Troggot have 1:1 equivalent in modern plastic now). Also, GW can surely not put back into production so much old things (even if they do Made to Order in metal, plastic or resin). That said, if they sell again the Mighty Fortress, that's instant buy from me :P

But I really wish for TOW and AOS to have a distinct design and aesthetic (even if they rightfully are part of the same GW "fantasy" family). At least focusing in 6th/7th identities for TOW is a good move, but I want them to show us NEW PLASTIC FITTING THE BILL

Although honestly just using Stormcast as elite infantry wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Precisely. Also, the Thunderstrike range fits really nicely next to the new City one (more down to earth design elements like belts, etc.).

So, if GW go ahead and make a Greatswords replacement, I hope it won't look like SCE...

Wonderful models ! Fitting both "city" and "dark woods" themes. I was debating either getting some Freeguild Steelhelm or the WHU Witch Hunters for Warcry ; this is the perfect blend (with added boschian creatures, very nice).

Also, article hinting at either big (Ogor/Demi-Mancrusher ?!) or monstrous thingies for the next team...

Honestly I wasn't sharing the enthusiasm of many on here about getting so much more units for CoS after last reveal, but now I can really see 1. Artillery (confirmed), 2. Elite infantry (hopefully not looking like SCE) and 3. another character (Priest of some sorts)...

  17. Good move from GW. I for one am fine with the suppression of duplicates - and yeah, the sooner WFB kits go back to their home in ToW, the better !

To be frank I also wished for Darkling Coven (not the Scourge !) to go back to ToW, as they are mainly associated with Har Kuron, Ulgu and Morathi, and it would have heralded the coming of Malerion's Ulgurothi...

Oh and and at least upgrade sprues for Griphon, Luminark/Hurricanum and Steam tank, to hide the "Karl Franz" names everywhere. Anyway easy conversion ahead.

Glad to have the new Artillery 100% confirmed too :)
