  1. @EMMachine I mean you can absolutely write you own background for vandus hammerhand, even if it conflicts with the official lore, why couldn’t you?

I understand why YOU wouldn’t want to do it if you want to stay « canon », but the whole point of narrative gaming is to make up your own story. You have no obligation to abide by the official lore. Just like running a rpg where established characters interact with your own.

Interesting. I don't know why it has to be "Heinrich Kemmler", a named char of the old world. I mean, what will you do if GW makes a version of Heinrich Kemmler for AoS. After the model is GW property you basicly don't have copyright on the character. Why not your completly own character?

He probably just likes the character and his lore, it’s not a stretch to imagine he could he back in the mortal realms. You don’t need copyright to make your own games and lore as long as you’re not making money from it!

  3. Completely agree @Overread , I didn’t mean to imply that it’s these people’s fault; they didn’t sign up because they wanted to be ambassadors, and that’s hard work that can be pretty daunting if you’re not a social butterfly (I personally see myself as a social mushroom : I grow on people). Although maybe I’m a bit frustrated when so many people are giving tips and they’re not engaging in that side of the conversation.

I think another roadblock can be when people tie their identity to  a specific system. Their whole hobby life then depends on the success of that game. As suggested before, being more flexible and open to new things is the best way to draw people and lure them back to your game of choice; along the way you might discover a new game that you like.

All in all at some point it falls on players to foster their communities. I think that’s both the hard part and also the strength of this hobby, and expecting the company to do all that work is, in a way, giving them too much power as well as settings oneself up for disapointment. Threads like this (especially with your excellent writeup) are very interesting and I hope can help people develop strategies to grow the community they like, starting with me. Once I’m done with my iron golem. And my undead. And the terrain... damn is it 2 am already?

  4. I think there’s often a problem of expectations. Like people that are heavily invested in competitive play mostly want that, they don’t want to play « broken » skirmish or « lopsided » games to get people interested.

I guess in a way I’m kind of the same. Like recently I took a trip to another country to play with a guy who I knew liked the same type of narrative gaming that I do, and who’s painting and modelling I admired. I did try a pick up game at my local store but I didn’t fully enjoy it, because my opponent didn’t really engage in the game the same way I did. I wasn’t that interested in trying to convert him to aos28 or whatever.

there’s probably a personality type of « ambassadors » who enjoy recruiting new people and such. I’d like to get a bit better at that, but that’s a lot of time and effort I’d rather spend on converting models or building terrain, in the same way that competitive types would rather be fine tuning their lists and tactics. And that’s ok as long as you don’t turn around and complain that you have no one to play with 😅

  5. Yeah I think since the hobby is such a time investment many people are reluctant to risk a « bad » game. Once they find opponents they like they’ll keep mostly playing them. So you really need people that are very invested in organizing events and recruiting new players. I think most groups will stay static unless there’s people that are pushing for development. Back on the old world thread you’ll notice that the complaints are mostly about people quitting aos and not about it being harder to recruit new players...

Well, from what only says '14th December, Warband name, then $65 dollars, we can't tell much. However with some inference and good old dose of wild speculation we can make some guesses.

First thing is they don't say 'warcry' before the listing, although other entries also don't state the game system. The list does appear to be in game system order though and they are sandwiched between the Slaves To Darkness releases and some AOS Terrain. There is a new Warcry book listed after this. This suggests that they are part of the Slaves to Darkness release.

I also don't think that it is a price rise. I agree with @passtheKhorneplease that if it were more sprues it would indeed look odd. I like the idea @Moldek has about the Killteam style release with terrain, the price seems about right.

If it is part of the Slaves to Darkness release though then it may be a double set minus the cards, comparing a warband price to similar things like a Necromunda Gang, $42, what were the cards $8? that would be about right and make them $50. Could be  double limited time Christmas set minus the cards, the Chrimbo boxes are on sale the week before after all. Could be 2 extra sprues instead of 3, I don't know the sprue composition well enough, are the leader and special fighters on their own sprue, or are the mixed up with the others, and is it different for every warband?

I have no idea, my gut feeling is they are for Slaves to Darkness, I have no idea in what form they will turn up though.

Good catch on the possibility that it’s an aos release. I don’t recall exactly how the sprues were arranged but yeah it could be some added grunts, although the kits are very monopose so it wouldn’t be a very exciting buy. They feel a bit tacked on to StD given their design, really not suited for big units...

  7. @Ollie Grimwood yeah, I remember the albion campaign, good times! Gw’s setting have always kind of shifted in tone and style, I think that’s one of the reasons they survived for so long. Who knows maybe in 10 years AoS will look more like Dark Sould than D&D 😂

@Beastmaster I think with mordheim they really captured lightning in a bottle tone wise. I don’t see how they could replicate that today as a bigger structure with more oversight and such. I’m fine with letting Mordheim live in fans communities, but if they re-release it we’ll at least get some cool new models.

There's one listed for each of the current warbands.

I'm very, very curious and hesitantly excited.

    The plot thickens 🤔

Maybe it’ll be like the kill team starter boxes that came with terrain? Since they said the starter box wouldn’t be around for ever, and the standalone terrain set doesn’t include everything from the starter...

  9. For now I have approached the problem from a different standpoint:

-I spend a lot of time painting, converting, making terrain. I want to be able to share that with people I already know and like, instead of investing the time to find and build a relationship with other players. So I have started converting my friends and family. Warcry has been a godsend for that, and I also find that « newbies » have much less preconceptions about the game compared to people already used to tournaments and such. I would like to eventually try to meet gaming groups near me but for now I get to build a narrative with those close to me, and I think that’s pretty cool.

-thanks to the internet I have also started connecting with other people that have the kind of vision of the hobby that I like (aos28 / narrative / hobby focused), and I am startibg to reach out and see if I get along with some of them. Just this weekend I flew to another country to meet a fellow hobbyist, and we played through a short and messy warcry mini-campaign. I had built a warband just for this occasion, and it was very rewarding! In the next couple of years I’d like to try to organize a bigger event and have a 1-2 day thing, with tailor made terrain, warbands and scenarios.

I know this is a bit off topic compared to your starting point @EccentricCircle , but for now it feels easier to me to start with a shared connexion and bring in the game, rather than start with the game and try to build the connexion, if that makes sense :)

No.  I am gutted because I'm watching my group get splintered and made smaller, and thats not why I chose to play a GW game.  I chose a GW game because it was promised that it had the largest play group to facilitate competitive gaming.

Well while I understand how you feel, it’s been like 4 days since the announcement, so maybe take a few weeks to see if things settle down?

Also I doubt you were promised anything like that to be honest.

  11. I really hope they don’t hike the prices up! Also I don’t see them doubling the sprues, for the reasons @passtheKhorneplease mentioned. Maybe added chaotic beasts but I don’t think people would be too excited for that. Do we have any names on the leaks or just « warcry warbands »? It would be cool if it’s an extended kit with alternative models...

I hope we hear about it soon!

  12. Hey guys,

I recently finished a Legions of Nagash crew for Warcry. This was all done so I could go visit a friend in spain and play a narrative mini-campaign with him. It was a great time!

I tried to challenge myself to go more into sculpting and really personalize the miniatures, to the point of them being mosly count as. Photo dump follows, please feel free to comment & critique :)

  13. @RexHavoc I think we have a similar approach, i.e skirmish narrative gaming at home.

I’ve said it before, I think the most important resource in wargaming is PEOPLE. Wether you play with close friends or in a gaming group, or even only in tournaments, your relationship with people is paramount to enjoying the hobby. All the releases in the world mean nothing if you don’t have people you enjoy playing with. Conversely, you’ll get more enjoyment of playing a game you don’t care about with people you like than playing your perfect system with a bunch of squigholes.

GW may release all the products they want, what they are selling is game rules and accessories. While they could and should try to help foster communities, this is not how they make their money. Like it or not, this is on the players. You want more competitive event? Hold one at your local store, make it welcoming, encourage positive behavior. Want to play at home but there’s only your little sister? You may have to switch out of your 3 keeper slaanesh list, and accept that her beastmen love glitter and unicorns. Your friends are on the fence? Make it easy for them, paint a couple small forces, have some nice terrain and some snacks.

This is hard because it’s paved with frustration and never getting quite what you want, but this is how you make great gaming memories and friends.

  14. @Dead Scribe you’re getting a lot of flak but I empathize with your position, if you’re worried your gaming group might split. That kind of change can be scary. However keep in mind the release is quite a while away, and it won’t be 8th edition. A lot of the early enthusiasm will probably die down in the coming months.

I think if you keep playing AoS regularly, and try to be an ambassador for the game - for instance offering initiation games, maybe a slow grow league, you won’t be hurt ad much as you think right now. Maybe you could even poach some of those returning players : « hey i see you’ve got a beastmen/empire/whatever army, you know those work in AoS too? Want to have a game some time? »

  15. Yeah I agree that a 10 or 6mm epic battle game could be awesome; but I’d be really surprised if they did that.

for one, the old warhammer fans would go ballistic about having no way to re-use their old armies

secondly, I don’t think they’ll go back to making very small infantry, as a huge part of GW’s appeal is the beautiful sculpts. Way harder sell on very small models, and there’s a lot of competition already existing, pretty cheap, at that scale you don’t see that much difference.

I’d be willing to bet it’s going to be the same scale as aos, which also allows them to recoup their losses if the game fails, by integrating at least part of the models into aos.

GW really should've waited until they had something a bit more concrete than a logo. Absolutely nothing to go off breeds speculation wild as nothing else.

I don’t know why they announced it like that, but maybe they want to gauge the community’s reaction before deciding their guidelines from the game. Let’s be honest, there’ll always be some crazy speculations. I find it interesting to hear everyone’s expectations and fears.

  17. Well @Rodiger I think you’re doing the right thing. To me the hobby is becoming much more affordable now that I only buy stuff I intend to paint & play with immediately. I’m not buying anything for a discount, a bundle or because it’s new and shiny. I’m not filling my closet with nebulous future armies that will never see the light of day. Sure I’d probably buy more if it was more affordable, but passed that first impulse of « I want it », I’ve never looked back weeks later and thought « if only I’d bought that battlebox! ».

I don’t think what GW is doing is really out of the norm. I don’t think it’s particularly good either! This kind of releases prey on FOMO and « whales » ready to buy anything as soon as it’s released, be it from a scalper. I’m not a big fan of such consumerism; what i value in the hobby is creativity, DIY, friendship and community.

I just don’t want to waste too much energy in all this; I have no way to influence GW other than how I spend my money. So I don’t spend it when the price is too high, and I know that my happiness will never be really impacted because I couldn’t afford some toy soldiers.

I do hope they keep releasing some affordable stuff though. But to me the prices are a blessing in disguise, as they forced me to ask myself what I value in the hobby.

(that’s the end of my TED talk, thank you for coming)
