I hope AoS is the "ZOMG, EVERYTHING DIALLED UP TO 15", and the Old World is a haven for less shouty models.

Well I’d love if they’d leave some room for some less « shouty » stuff in AoS, since I think a good range needs some contrasts. Even in fantasy there was a lot of over the top stuff, it wasn’t all filthy peasants lol

Ray Dranfield is posting on twitter new terrain tips - this time he posted size comparison of Warcry and Rohan terrain.

Nice! If anyone has the ruin of osgiliath and the warcry / azyrite ruins set I’d love to see those side by side too

  3. I'm glad they're bringing most of aos armies into warcry, I hope this will sustain the game's popularity if most people can play their minis.
@madmac I agree about the sacrosanct chamber. You could easily make a warband (above 1000 pts even!) out of the 2 existing easy to build kits, which would be an awesome starting point for new players. Vanguards made sense thematically but I don't really like their style; plus if they can fit IDK in the eightpoints, sacrosanct shouldn't be a problem... I've been using sacrosanct models anyways haha.

The only downside to me is that the original theme and setting of the game is going to lose some of its strength : if they were going to have all factions anyways, why set it in the eight points instead of shadespire or some other more generic place? It does feel like they started with a chaos skirmish game, and then decided to change it into aos killteam mid-development.

I'm hoping that as the game grows they add new campaign settings that explore various places in the mortal realms. The system is light enough that's it's easily doable.

  4. @WarbossKurgan I’m well aware of your campaigns and they inspire me a lot! Your kind of campaigning is exactly what I’m into, and one of the reasons I stayed interested in skirmish. I’ll keep an eye out for what you do with warcry, very interested!

@Malios you’re absolutely right that mordheim has a lot of problems. Honestly I’ve always loved the after battle sequence more than the actual battle itself haha. I would still play it given the chance, but more as an excuse to use cool scenery and see what the randomness brings :)

@Thomas Lyons and @Vincent Venturella wrote a mordheim ruleset for aos 1 a couple of years ago, I haven’t given it a good read but it looks interesting too https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2wtslxi5wm65li8/AAB6kZliBHc-OiuzxsAyoc3sa?dl=0

I've dabbled in the Skirmish 1.0 rules (plus the Forgotten Heroes fan expansion), and found that even with the changes that Skirmish 2.0 made, Hinterlands is still a superior ruleset for AoS skirmishing if you are interested in using units with AoS Warscrolls.  The new rules restrictions it puts in place (especially the one restricting a unit to 3 mortal wounds inflicted at a time, all extra MW inflicted are changed to standard saveable wounds)) stop powerful units from breaking skirmish games by killing an entire enemy force in one activation.

Or if you are already willing to play a game that does not use strict AoS rules, try One Page Rules and their not-40k and not-AoS games.  They are a completely different ruleset, but both their army-scale and skirmish-scale games have an analogue (just named differently for IP reasons) to every AoS model/unit, plus they both use the same core rules.  So while it's not a GW ruleset in anyway (which unfortunately  tends to turn lots of people off), it allows players to use every AoS model in their collection.  Plus, it's also completely free so it's easy to try out.

For instance my Skaven warband for skirmish has everything from a Grey Seer,to Clanrats, to a Stormfiend with warpfire throwers.  Jezzails, Globadiers, unit wargear options etc.

Plus the rules go through pretty impressive playtesting for a free ruleset.  If you are willing to donate to their Patreon (I am debating on it) you also gain access to Advanced Rules and a Unit Creation ruleset.

Hinterlands is definitely something I want to try at some point. I have actually played a bit with the one page rules system; even came up with a system of special action cards (kind of like the warcry abilities) to make it more cinematic. I used it to play with my girlfriend but we’ve switched focus to warcry for now. It’s a pretty good system, probably better than AoS for people who are not already into the GW mindset.

  6. I have been thinking about it for a while, but I think at some point I will convert the warcry rules for the mordheim setting. Probably mostly count-as of existing warbands to keep a decent balance, with some perma-death and fun injuries tacked on... and of course a table full of warped ruins...

  7. @Beastmaster @The Cranky Dwarf

Yeah I’ve seen that the rules don’t really translate well, still I’m sure there’s some way to make it work, either as a more narrative project or by just playing crazy model choices instead of realistic forces.

@Greyshadow this sounds like an awesome project! I hope you’ll post some pics. I think I have a similar approach to the hobby as yours. This year I’ce created a narrative about a small force of stormcast facing a ghost insurrection to get my girlfriend into wargaming. We tried a couple of rulesets since AoS was a bit too much for her, and we’ve settled on warcry. I’m also starting a more chaos focused warcry campaign with some relatives. My warband is done and I have a lot of terrain to get to once I have finished the chaotic beasts. Can’t wait to play a fully painted game on a complete table!

I still keep an eye on skirmish, in case I can get some AoS friends. It’s definitely not a complete game but could be an interesting toolbox in my opinion...

I'd probably be rather play War Cry, to be honest - barring some cool narrative event/scenario that someone is running Skirmish with.

Yeah I really like warcry, but I’m interested in the ability to use all the models from AoS without having to do custom profiles or count as. If I had a gaming group that’s more into AoS I’d definitely want to play some skirmish scenarios. I do think it would take a bit of work on that side to make it interesting though...

Interesting article that raises a few good points in favor of 15mm. I don’t see it as likely though as if it was a return to 15mm they wold have just called it Warmaster in the announcement.

I’d be surprised if they went that direction but it could honestly make for a cool game. Huge armies at a small scale would allow for some sincerely impressive battles, and cool scenery opportunity too. Warhammer fantasy tables often looked a tad underwhelming to me. With 15 or even 10 mm you can have rivers running across the board and such, instead of 2 clumps of trees and a small house in the corner...

  10. @Fairbanks good pointers. It does seem like a more fleshed out wound system could make standard dudes a tad more interesting. Also the whole treasures and creatures deal. The warcry system for beasts is quite good (you can try to activate one on a 3+, if you fail your opponent gets to play it). Now that I think about it, adopting the alternating activations could be neat too.

@flemingmma yeah embracing the brokenness might be pretty fun too! Do you use those cool cards that you posted on the narrative forum?

My new totally unfounded dream/hope is not that this is 6/8/10/28/32/whatever stupid scale it is that you all want to argue over and they just dodge all that nonsense and drop a new legacy style version of Mighty Empires instead.

I’ll be happy, everyone else can, frankly, go swivel. job done.

  12. This is a bit of a recurring interest of mine. My gaming buddies are mostly relatives that I brought into warcry, so I don’t really play AoS much at the moment, but I’ve always really liked the concept of skirmish.

I’ve read all of the arguments about why it’s broken in terms of balance, and I’ve seen first hand that many of the rules don’t really work at such a small scale.

In spite of all that, I’d love to hear about anyone’s experiences with skirmish, wether it’s narrative based of just a bit of beer & bretzels fun. Do you play it, have you done any tweaks to the rules, any advice or fun stories?

The index books put me off 40k completely - i bought them all only for them to be replaced almost immediately with codexes which vastly outclassed the index rules. Now, only 2 and a half years into 40k 8th, we already have 2.0 codexes for SM and CSM - financially i want to spend my hobby budget on models not rules, so ive dropped 40k. This has however led to a massive influx of AoS models 😁

That’s one thing kinda putting me off of the main games, especially 40k. If i ever play it again I think I’ll just dust up the old 3rd ed rulebook from my childhood

When I say rules support from the start for all armies, I don't mean army books and the like, that would be an unreasonable expectation, I mean at the very least PDF rules or the index books similar to the start of 8th edition 40k, so none of the armies that existed during the final years of WFB are left waiting for support.

As I know the guys in my current club who are excited for this like I am would just lose interest if they are left waiting even longer to have official rules for their favourite armies when GW has shown they are capable of doing get you by rules for all armies at launch of a new system as they did with the initial launch of AoS & then with 8th edition of 40k.

That would be cool, I’m not sure what I’d bet on honestly. That kind of full support for factions is what they do for mainline games, I’m not sure they’d do it for a « specialist » game. Maybe like 6 factions that cover most of the range, like human realms, chaos worshippers, undead hordes etc? I can’t even bring myself to keep on writing this since it’s like pure fanfiction at this point haha

I'm sure when it turns out that GW aren't pumping 3+ years of resources into creating a game solely for the purpose allowing people to play with their 10-20 yr old models it will be greeted in an incredibly emotionally mature manner.

Haha yeah, I’ve had that thought too. As a slight counterpoint I’m sure a lot of Fantasy fans would jump at the chance to buy updated sculpts even if they have a full army.

To be honest I hope that announcement gets people playing warhammer fantasy again, even based on a false assumption. It’s sad to have a painted army gathering dust!

If I had some friends that played it I’d definitely be down to put together a small oldhammer army. If it turns out it can be used in TOW it’s a bonus :)

It'd be nice if we could stick to the TGA policy of not posting if it's only to be recurringly negative and not even bothering to engage in a conversation.

As for myself, I think I'll make a Tomb King army (like everyone else, right? :P). I'll be getting models from the Desert of the Dead KS which will make a perfect base.

That's hoping it will be a 28mm game. Wouldn't mind though if they made it 15 or 10mm, it's a scale that I never got into but find appealing. As long as TOW is something completely new and distinct from everything else, I'll be happy.

Might be surprising, but I've seen many whfb groups meet the announcement with hostility, thinking it may affect "their game" (for the record, whfb 6th ed is still very strong in this area of the planet). Funny as it's the same reaction certain AoS folks had. Think about it, the impossible happened: TOW, bringing AoS and WHFB fans together against GW.

Yeah it’s really interesting how much of a touchy subject GW can be to the fans themselves. I think a lot of people have emotional memories of their best gaming period and it’s a painful thing to realize times are moving on, and that GW is first and foremost a company that needs to sell their products. Honestly I wish the DIY approach you see in rpgs (and even historical wargaming) was more prevalent; you don’t have to tie your hopes and dreams to a company’s strategy.

I’d be really surprised if it’s not 28 mm, but a warmaster style approach could look really good. I just doubt they’d sell half as much.

I don’t know what army I’d make. I’ve always liked the idea of a very grimy, border patrolling empire army. Or maybe chaos dwarfs dredged from the depths of ebay...

  17. Honestly @Dead Scribe I don’t understand if you’re trolling or what. Litterally dozens of people have offered solutions to grow your group, perspective about the impact of the game, real life experiences that show how to foster a great community. You have not responded to any of these comments and you keep repeating that this game will be your doom, that it’s not fair, that you hope it sucks. I get your fears, I really do, but you seem determined to just be negative.

Do you not see how that attitude itself hurts your chance of growing your group? I’d much rather learn fantasy  than join a group where playing any other game than aos is unthinkable. Who wants to be part of a group where playing a different system makes you the enemy?

I’m puzzled on why you even continue to post about it since you’re just repeating the same thing, and ignoring or dismissing any attempt from people to help you. If you’re like that in real life don’t be surprised that people are leaving your group.

I hope this doesn’t come off too harsh but I needed to say it.

In my area people like to focus on one game.  Talking about promoting multiple games is essentially tallking about creating multiple small groups.  I don't want a small group.  I play GW games because it has the biggest group I can get, which means the biggest tournament attendance thats possible.

So things like the warhammer announcement hurt someone in my position because people want to only focus on one game and they are going to pick and choose, which is going to remove people from my AOS group (it already has started).

Well it's probably short term anyways, since whatever they'll release is at least 3 years away. That gives you a lot of time to recruit more people that are more interested in AoS than the Old World, and grow the group. You could also invite some of the former Fantasy players that came out of the woodwork to try out AoS, since they already have the models. It looks like you feel that there's nothing you can do but I'm sure that's not true.
But if you don't do anything to get new players in, people's experiences in this thread suggest that your group will dwindle even without any warhammer announcement, as most people drop out of the hobby after a while for various reasons.
