Not had the chance to play the game at all yet but have really enjoyed painting these guys up. Also added the Ogroid Myrmadon because its a beautiful model.

They look really good! I like that you were able to make them look unified despite the varied skin tones. The painting quality is top-notch

  2. @Kirjava13 as has been said, don’t beat yourself up about it. I’ve read a comment somewhere recently that went something like « do you NEED to do this and that, or do you WANT to? »

Sometimes we have to remember that the hobby is not a job and we’re not supposed to be stressed about painting little plastic toys. So take care of you and your people, and at some point you’ll assuredly feel excited about it again :)

  3. @Dead Scribe I don’t have a problem with your approach to the game, and you certainly have some good points. I think what irks a lot of people (me included) is when you repeatedly assert that the game is only made to be played like that when that’s patently not true; from every narrative and open play rules & scenarios written, promoted and sold by GW, to all the narrative events that you can find with a simple search, to everyone telling you that they don’t play like you do, there’s ample proof that a lot of people just like playing narrative games.

Whether it’s a lesser proportion of the aos scene, or just a less vocal one, doesn’t matter. I don’t play a lot of games because I usually spend a lot of time building up a warband and a narrative before playing, sometimes even travelling to do so. Is that a less valid or enjoyable way? I don’t think so. I wouldn’t enjoy playing the type of game you like but I would never disparage you for liking them.

@wayniac I really hope you don’t lose hope. I seriously recommend doing what you can to find people you like playing with. Also sometimes I find the anxiety about making the right choices can make the problem feel bigger than it actually is when you get to playing. So start with a couple of battlelines and build that army :)

  4. While I mostly play warcry these days, I feel compelled to give my two cents, as often when narrative gaming is discussed.

Regarding your dilemna, it seems like the best option, as others said, is to just have a bigger army that you can select from, and maybe have a couple of prewritten lists depending on your opponent.

The opponent is the key here. Don’t let deadscribe’s point of view sway you too much; he is only interested in something that is actually a small part of the community, the tsport approach as you call it. I can assure you that there are tons of gamers that do not care about the meta, placing in tournaments or any of that. Of course these people are less vocal, especially on the internet, as they don’t spend as much energy talking about list building or analyzing game data.

These are the people you need to find! People that like competition, but only as one part of the hobby. People that you enjoy playing against, wether you win or not. They are harder to find, but it’s really worth it. Even if you have to collect 2 armies and get some friends into it.

This is a social game after all, in my opinion the most important aspect is having good opponents.

And a lot of people will appreciate a cool looking, fluffy army more than a powerful netlist. The idea that narrative has no place in wargaming or AoS is laughable considering the enormous part that art and story have in it’s identity. Most people don’t start painting dozens of highly detailed miniatures just because they want to smash faces.

    I’ll stop rambling now 😅

Trying to get my The Drowned (Nurgle Daemons Warcry warband) ready for painting:

I had this idea of a warband (Nurgle allegiance) made from deep sea horrors and horrible drowned zombies. Think Deepkin, but much more dark. The idea is that sailors and divers (which I'm sure exists in the mortal realms - if not, they do now) sometimes succumb to ilnesses of the ocean, like scurvy and other horrible diseases. When they do, the great father offers them the chance to be freed from pain and suffering - if only they wow to serve him in the sea. Many say yes, and plunge themselves into the sea, while wowing their pledge to the Nurgle. Indeed, the pain and suffering disappears, but so does their will and sanity. All that is left are bloated, drowned hulks of the men they were, seeking only to taint the living.

They are led into battle by the Duke of the Depths, a silent knight of the ocean, carried into battle by a huge squid-beast, accompanied by horrible giant Whelks and other sea monsters.

To most, they are little more than a legend that is whispered of by the campfires in the eightpoints. Stories are told of warbands, treading dry and barren earth, and suddenly finding their feet submerged in ankle high water. Through a heavy fog stumbles the rotting forms of once noble seafarers and divers, and horrible monsters emerge. Few have seen them, and fewer still have survived to tell the tale of The Drowned.

Great idea and execution, can’t wait to see them painted!

  6. I will not be able to attack my pile of shame as I am stuck at my girlfriend’s place in the countryside!

I was able to get some models of off ebay at the start of the confinement. I went for some cheap pokwalkers. I only have artist’s acrylics so this won’t be fine painting but it will let me experiment.

I don’t have a lot of time for hobby since I am doing a lot of comics these days! But I have already started bulding a bit of terrain from trash. The goal is to make a small set of terrain and two warbands of mutants, and coerce my girl into a campaign of skirmishes on a run-down quarantine planet...

we’ll see what comes of it!

Not too far off from the canonical ending to Silver Tower. :D

Asking Tzeentch for power(even though it was for a noble cause) but not adding even one guideline is just asking to get strangled by the loopholes.

Great job by the way on keeping these so frequent. I really appreciate the hard work you guys put into these web-comics. :)

Thanks man, for now I’ve kind of been coasting on stuff I’d already made, but starting next week I have to come up with something new... thankfully I have more than a couple of ideas! I have to admit that I’m scared of having to draw stormcast though... those pauldrons...

IMO, there is a misconception about The Old World and"Fantasy Fans".  My last fantasy game was about 16 years ago and I don't feel diferent from a dude that is just playing Vermintide or Total War, or a girl that it's reading the Gotrek omnibus.

I don't know why but some people think that, because they started playing in one of the "true editions", they have some type of right over all other Fantasy Fans, and imo, that's selfish and naive.

As often on the internet, I think it’s mostly that people have very different definitions of the same term. Obviously an oldhammer fan will picture something different than a total war fan when they read « we’re bringing the old world back ». People then get agravated because the most incendiary opinions are the most noticeable. And then it devolves into « us vs them ».

I have no skin in the game personally, just observing that people’s expectations will shape their reactions.

when I said « fantasy fans » I just meant people that want a return to the old school game, I didn’t mean to imply « true fans » or anything like that.

No. Generally I have an opinion of bases that they are not part of the model, but instead just a method of conveyance. So, they are not something I usually factor in to my paint jobs.

I’m not a big fan of scenic bases, but I think a little touch of color that calls back to the paintjob (like a sickly green or bony off white) can really add to the model. I respect your point of view though, especially if you’re going to play them on different styles of terrain.

  10. I am spending confinement in the countryside here in france, at my girlfriends place. Sadly I don’t have any miniatures or paints here. BUT I have ordered some cheap poxwalkers on ebay, and I have some art acrylics. So the plan is to paint my minis with those (thoroughly thinned) and build some cool terrain with mossy stones and branches. While I am pretty worried about my older relatives, I’m excited to start this quarantine project to take my mind off of things.
