The Open Play battleplan generator, found in the Core Book 3.0, is the best format for pick-up games. Many Deployment formats, Twists and different Victory conditions to challenge different army list strategies. There is even one Victory condition that involves a mysterious Objective (the Arcane Prize) in the center, that has to picked up by a unit but you never know what it is going to be! It could be trapped, it could be a warding icon, it could give off an arcane aura bonus! What's better than battleplan generator tables? Why, those tables in card format! Here is a set of cards with all the AoS 3.0 Open Play battleplan tables to print out. Using a professional printing service, in cardstock, yields best results. It's become very useful at our local gaming shop!! Enjoy! @WH_narratives
  2. Ive heard from others' experiences that yes, trying to make an escalation league out of this, with specific points increases, tends to not work very well cuz thats built in already through its natural progression. If the "escalation" is just the number of points players can field in army lists (which is always decided on a game per game basis anyway), then I think that works well. Organizers also seem to have good engagement with allowing Glory to be earned if players post some hobby they've done or original writing. I think just using the Tiers of Battle, and allowing people at several diff levels of PtG to play together without worrying too much, is better. Its the veteran abilities that unfortunately escape the balancing of Tiers of Battle ... an organizer could put in place that for every X veteran abilities an army has more than the other, the underdog army can take a Ruse or something. Maybe each 2-3 Vet abilities. Regarding the warlord, yeah, i'm glad they introduced the option to improve the model. I'd like they also explicitly said that you *could* use the on-foot/non-upgraded version too, just for the flexibility of list-building. Thats also a houserule one could put in. I think using Anvil of Apotheosis might be the better option for the warlord. It's just a matter of deciding whether they increase in Destiny points every game (as suggested in the Anvil rules, D3 each game), or some conversion factor from renown. Say, each 3 renown = 1 Destiny Point. I do have to say that I appreciate the Matched Play compatibility. I cant convince enough people to do PtG anyway (for long enough), so if I can play a PtG game and build up my army's story for myself, without needing to ask anything else from my opponent, thats awesome. If I want something more involved and more narratively rich, I have to try to see if someone runs a proper campaign or find narrative events to attend... Its hard enough to get people on board, unfortunately. So thats why I appreciate the middle ground: so at least *I* can enjoy it
  3. fixed a broken link, it should work now!! Copy-paste woes 😁 Also, Rules Pack has been updated! New version is in the link.

  7. I completely agree! 3000% agree. Yes, this year's matched play Battle Tactics (in particular) make it unnecessarily complex. I agree so much w this idea, that I had already started doing it 3 years ago! Lots of battleplans, all the way from Mighty Battles, Realmgate Wars to the modular rules from GHB2018 and more. I split them all into components. But haven't finished yet, Ive gotten "distracted" running Narrative Events πŸ˜…. Some battleplans are hard to fit into cards. I've made all the new AoS 3.0 Open War table entries into cards (download here) and printed em, and folks at my local shop have been loving it for its ease of use. The Arcane Prize is especially loved, as a few times it's exploded a trap in their faces! The Open Play is really the best casual game engine, now that points are a part of every game mode. No fuss, straightforward battles that still test the way every army and combo and strategy can work... without the more complicated scoring mechanics. This has gotten me motivated to finally get the first edition of the cards done, and everyone could help playtest them. How does that sound?
  8. Look at that! Its Bryshavon! Hope to see more of this place's history going forward. Do you already have an entry on the Great Weave?
  9. I believe this is going to revolutionize how people experience narrative in their games, whether the game is full-on narrative play or a tournament. For the first time, you have an official framework that players can agree on, which they can get invested in while they play, usable in any pick up game. Thats the strength of the system: you can do it on your own, scoring stuff, even if your opponent just wants to play a matched play this time. Later on, you can use the stuff you scored to play games with the full PtG bonuses against other players who also are playing it. In this way, its kind of good that it's relatively vanilla, as event organizers can layer more stuff on it if needed, but its easily slottable in any casual games wihtout much grumbling, thats why it's powerful . Cant wait to start trying the new quests, just like in Warcry.
  10. This sounds like a great idea! One big battle, even if spread across several tables (ie. an underground table, for ex), is easier to organize than multiple games over the day. And you can take all the time to set up amazing terrain. If you intend to allow for choose-your-own-adventure frameworks, maybe starting from the Matrix Campaigns (GHB 2016, pg 96) could be a good idea. Allows several strategies using a very simple framework to build a battleplan. Or you could just allow one team (roll-off?) to choose the battleplan of their choice, or add in some of the Narrative Rules effects in the GHB 2018. This way you could use a lot of things that are ready-made and aren't very complex. Unless, of course, you want to do some rules-writing of your own. A buddy of mine has a working Excel Sheet for Anvil of Apotheosis, but hasn't been fully updated yet with the new expansions in White Dwarf. There don't seem to be any websites out there that have the whole Anvil character generation fully implemented yet, i think... Looking forward to see this take off! Nothing like some visually big games, and meeting regularly in a campaign, to get people playing on the regular.
  11. agreed with Melcavuk, yes. Restricting to Abilities affecting only 1 unit would fully retain the value of the ability as intended, plus its a short simple description to understand. My suggestion with the +1 to cast was more... when designing the traits that will make Gloamspire 'feel' Gloamspire... its better to lean on something exclusive in than to make a budget version of another city. But maybe im underestimating that +1 to Bravery and that retreat+charge ability when combined w Lumineth as 1/4 of the army πŸ˜‰. And the whole package works well after all.
  12. Designing custom Free Cities is all the rage now! πŸ˜ƒ Will love to see this in a nice PDF with a bit of background lore at some point. I think your Battle Traits could afford to be a bit stronger... Especially your +1 to cast when compared to things like Hallowheart. But keeping that feel of Ulgu-Shyish will be important πŸ‘ Actually I think the "Whispered Word" trait could even work well as a main Battle trait, as it would define the army...
  13. I love it for it's simplicity. The Skirmish rules were really only lacking just a couple of things, and these were it. ☺️ I particularly like the Overwhelmed rule: it addresses one of the few glaring problems of Skirmish with a surgical change. I think I'll play with the Critical Wound giving only a -2 to Rend instead of a mortal wound though, because there are warscrolls that already have that ability as "something special" of their own. I think il dip into Skirmish again with these rules πŸ‘
  14. Points above are great advice. It will really depend on what you mean by narrative gaming and campaigning. It all exists in a spectrum. If you mean that you enjoy your battles having a sense of meaning, a reason for why armies fight and goals they and their characters are trying to achieve, they they are compatible. On the other hand, if you mean that you want to spontaneously tell stories on the battlefield because "that's what my character would do"... it's more complicated (tho not impossible, u just need to find the right crowd). But if you are aiming for the first situation: its doable, if people are minimally amenable to narrative, you just have to show them how(then they get hooked, as mentioned above ;) ) One way you can manage that is to set narrative objectives: battles are fought over particular objectives because they are the altar of something-something, of the tomb of whats-its-name. If properly represented on the battlefield (instead of some old random marker) this will change the experience completely. AND! the winner gets to take a specific campaign reward for winning that (that they may lose later on if it is stolen). A good example of a flexible system for even narrative one-offs, Duncan (Nacdnullah in this forum) has a plug-and-play battleplan that can serve all those needs: https://www.tga.community/files/file/107-battleplan-stuff-of-legends/ You can also set narrative objectives for the campaign, specific to each army. They get X points for accomplishing specific things, so you reward the kind of narrative behavior you want to see. What you will see emerge is a competition to win... by doing narrative things. Experience systems also work well, and you can use PtG reward tables for that (and just do everything else with points). Just ensure that you have an underdog bonus system for battles against more powerful opponents (that way, even by losing a battle you may come out with a nice boost of experience): this prevents the runaway leader syndrome. And by uncoupling the Experience bonuses from the actual "campaign points" required to win the campaign.... you have a balancing mechanic that allows others to catch up in ability, but not in overall campaign progress. It's also essential to have a campaign manager, or GM. It won't work without one, or a a couple, because people will want arbitration over disputes, to ensure fairness and even handed decisions (so it is fair throughout the campaign,, for everyone). These aren't hard in stone of course: you'll have to experiment, and adapt to your group. Good luck! :D
  15. Wow! That's a great gaming partner you got there! Awesome to see folks diving in head first into homebrewed narrative like this. I'm jealous: city fights, back-alley backstabs and infiltration. It's scripted, but it all makes narrative sense. And it's mostly from released material, which helps the folks at the Design studio feel appreciated they spent all that time on those battleplans! Sounds awesome. It seems already complex enough, that u dont need to add anything to it. Maybe as optional add-ons you could have Path to Glory or Regiment of Renown (GHB19) veteran upgrades for some surviving units. Tracking casualties and injuries (from Glymmsforge solo campaign) would be more complicated, but could work if u did it only for Heroes. Due to the fact your points values are set every battle, the benefit would be to just keep your best Heroes alive for as long as possible: otherwise u have to field a fresh new one with no veteran upgrades.

Registration and event details at: https://forms.gle/SiSZH8fSijTaKh2E8 This 1-day narrative event will consist of parallel games of Age of Sigmar (3 games) and Warcry (5 games). Players can participate either with an AoS army or a Warcry warband. Gangs of warriors will fight as mercenaries, over an urban landscape, trying to take over territory and clearing the streets of wild endless spells and rampaging monsters. On their way, they will fulfill missions for their employers, and gain coin to spend on espionage or supplies. Throughout the battles, mercenaries can be contracted, units will become veterans and accumulate abilities, and find out what's behind the riots of the Lavafall district. THE SPIRIT OF THE EVENT This event runs on the themes of city fights, revolution, charges against barricades and lots of backstabbing plots. Think "Gangs of New York" or "Les Miserables", or even Western movies and "Pirates of the Caribbean". So get those Cities of Sigmar armies out there! Please register your interest as soon as possible (even if you cannot confirm yet), so we can plan tables and terrain, and accommodate as many people as possible. Hello folks. I decided to share this piece of rules kit that I developed for our local games store, to solve the problem of getting all players together on the same day for a Map Campaign. We've all been there, and it's complicated. Hence, after a couple years figuring out how to best solve it (and being inspired by Firestorm!), I came up with Warfront. This is a Map League/Campaign for a gaming group/store, where every game played, even random one-off games, can count towards the overall advance of each Grand Alliance as they conquer territory along the map. Even better: each new game can benefit from the bonuses accumulated by previous games from players belonging to the same Grand Alliance: either previously established garrisons on the map or Spoils collected from previous victories. All very easy and straightforward: 1-2 pages of rules. All you need is some corkboard, some coloured pins, and presto! Winning battles grants the winner control of the map region and Spoils markers, or if they win a Skirmish battle they can choose to earn Intel markers or destroy the enemies' fortifications. Players keep track of which territories their Grand Alliance controls, and how many Spoils and Intel markers they have accumulated using the coloured pins. Fortified and Garrisoned map regions, as they are developed by winning players, are further marked with extra white/transparent pins (these are places with defensive earthworks or full-fledged forts, respectively). Warfront is also very customizable: the ruleset is meant to be so simple it should work for every map you can come up with for your own gaming group, or even work in multiple systems. It is truly more a logistic framework to organize players than necessarily a rules supplement. The easiest and laziest way to insert narrative into your games. MAPS INCLUDED I have done two maps: one adapted straight from the Firestorm Box set (Flamescar Plateau), and another from the Shyish map for Malign Portents (Southern Innerland Marches of Shyish). But any map released in any Age of Sigmar publication can be turned into a Warfront map: just draw Map Regions lines across it and presto! Just make sure you include 25+ regions, and scatter a few "Permanent Regions of Entry" for Grand Alliances: realmgates serve perfectly for this, in order for armies to be able to always attack across the map and prevent one Alliance from dominating too much too fast. ARMY PROGRESSION CAMPAIGNS Of course, within the larger pool of players participating on-and-off in the League, a smaller group of players can always come together to play an army progression campaign "story" together, growing their armies as they go via Path to Glory or Skirmish. All the while participating in the larger war for the territory. Because the WarFront rules contain an in-built balancing system when forces are of different sizes (Sudden Death and Ruses/Stratagems), even when some players have played more games it would not severely unbalance the game if they have a larger force. Enjoy, try out and feedback is more than welcome. Nuno M, Warhammer Narratives (WHFBNarratives@blogspot.com)
