  1. hmmm "mind boggling logic and bizarre symmetry" How about they can manipulate the phase order in a turn? Already in combats you like? (1) Combat phase, (2) Movement Phase, (3) shooting phase. Want to shoot and scoot? (1) shooting phase, (2) movement phase. Scared of bugging out? (1) Battle Shock phase.....
  2. I don't have the models anyway to try it. But 200 free wounds! I mean, it feels like it at least deserves some field testing. You still have 1000 more points after the Gaunts. Maybe something fast and somewhat tanky. FWIW I'd hide the Gaunts behind terrain at deployment. Obviously, one would have the teleport spell. I don't know. Someone else can fill-out the details. Not my play style anyway.
  3. I don't see why not. They are a StD hero. So on the turn they are the general they should be able to use the ability. (And, yes, it seems to me that means that Gaunt Summoners are summoning a whooping 60 wounds of stuff for free! (summoning 10 pink horrors with their new war scroll ultimately turn into 50 wounds + 10 wounds of marauders). Query: Is a 4x Gaunt Summoner list game-breaking?
  4. Thanks. That's my inclination as well. I like to play very aggressively. Though I admit it's hard to leave the amulet behind!
  5. I have a team tourney coming up. 1000 pts each. My partner is running the Khorne Bloodcrusher Battalion (something like 6xcrushers, 6xcrushers, 3xcrushers, and Skull master). In keeping with the fun alpha-strike theme, I'm thinking of one of three options: 1: Frost Lord on Stonehorn - ethereal amulet, nomadic raider, Black Clatterhorn 2xStonehorn Beastriders -OR- 2: Boulderhead FL on SH - with boulderhead articfact and trait, Black Clatterhorn 2x SH riders -OR- 3: FL on SH - ehereal amulet, nomadic raider, Black Clatterhorn 4x Mournfang 4x Mournfang Nothing but Stonehorns seems awfully fun, but that's not many wounds. Whereas Mournfangs double the wounds and math-out closely damage-wise. And if I go all Stonehorns, is it worth it to drop Ethereal Amulet to gain the benefits of Boulderhead (+1 wound to SH's, Dig Deep Your Heals, and +1 Charge range battle trait). No matter what, if we get the charge in, it's going to be a hella mortal wounds.....
  6. Let me tell you, snipping and pining those narrow hafts to convert everything to ensorcelled weapons was NOT fun. I'm glad I saved all my bits.
  7. I think the point is rather than all Varanguard units having to come from the same Circle, you can make each unit of Varanguard come from a different Circle. But this happens at list building level. I can't see how it's worth the points anymore, if it ever was. Sixth Circle is still the clear choice. Would you pay a huge tax so one unit can fly instead of getting the extra damage? I can't imagine it.
  8. Luckily, you can mix and match the bits enough to make them fairly distinct, especially if you use weapons from other kits. they really do look like individual heroes more than units. Gotta say, very time-consuming to paint. There’s more trim than non-trim, and tons of little details.....
  9. Almost ready to roll........ (wish I could field all 15, Alas, 4x3 and Archaon will provide for some glorious, if not futile, games!) (I'm going 6th Circle/Mark of Khorne. If I go bottom of 1 and top of 2, (and I'll use both command points to try to get it ), holy hell is stuff gonna die.....)
  10. I think you're missing the import of the above-quoted part of the rule. For a particular battle, Arachaon can only be given one Mark Keyword.
  11. So the 6's to wound count as two wounds or does it count as two 6's to wound. The later breaks Slanesh Archaon, obviously.
  12. Thanks for this. Don't forget the once-per-game second attack the Varanguard get. I think (with some luck obviously) you can can get through beefy screens by attacking twice. (might be a case for Fell Spears and their 2" range in this case). All-seeing Dominion will let you time your attack perfectly. I think a huge key is going 2nd on turn 1. So that means taking the battalion for a two-drop army. Maybe something like: Archaon, 3x Varanguard, Summoner on Disk, Battalion (not sure on points). Maybe go 6th circle and the "fly" circle. Pretty good chance you get a double turn either between 1st and 2nd or 2nd and 3rd. When you do, I think the alpha-strike will maul pretty much any army. (I'm still not clear on the wording of the battalion in question - whether it grants all your Varanguard a second circle, or whether you can just run multiple circles for multiple varanguard)
  13. Did some quick math for unit of 3x Varanguard. Assuming: 1) Archaon on board and general and in his 18" aura; 2) Mark of Khorne; 3) 6th Circle; and 4) On charge: Ensorcelled weapons: 2+ save=9.5 wounds; 3+ save=14.5 wounds; 4+ save=19.5 wounds; 5+ save=24 wounds; 6+save=29 wounds Fellspears : 2+ save=11 wounds; 3+ save=14.5 wounds; 4+save=18 wounds; 5+save=22 wounds; 6+save=22 wounds Daemonforge Blades : 2+save= 9 wounds; 3+save=12.5 wounds; 4+save=16 wounds; 5+save=20 wounds; 6+save=23 wounds Obviously, ensorcelled are even better choice when not on the charge, as Fellspears lose a rend and lose +1 to wound. So Ensorcelled seem the clear choice now. I suppose the best argument for Fellspears would be they are slightly better against very hard targets, and the 2" range could come in handy for the once-a-game second pile in and attack. Without Archaon, I'm not sure they warrant the 300 pts. I see them as basically being solely used for ultra-elite Archaon lists. And holy hell, if 3-4 units get a charge in, will it be glorious!
  14. If there is a way to make Archaon fight more than once in a combat phase, the new wording of the slayer of kings makes it pretty likely you can insta-kill things like Nagash, Morathi, et al..... just need two sixes to hit IN THE SAME PHASE.
  15. And we have no idea what the Everchosen subfaction does for them. I’m withholding judgment.
  16. Someone in the STD/Chaos thread said they heard 300 pts. for Varanguard. I'm guessing that means Archaon is probably now something like 800+ pts. So 9xVaranguard (900), Archaon (800+), and Gaunt Summoner (say 160ish) gets you close to 2000. BTW, this sucks for me. I bought 15x Varanguard and Archaon a few months back before the announcement , and they all had fit under 2000 pts under the old book. I knew it was a bit of a risk. But I didn't think I'd lose the ability to field 6/15 of them. Now what do I do? I have 3xblack 3xblue 3xred 3xgreen and 3xpurple. I drop the black and purple? I suppose I can swap in the appropriate color if Archaon can still mark them in-game. That's a hell of an expensive luxury though.
  17. It'll definitely suck if I can only field 12, but I'm OK with it. I really should have a screening unit anyway tbh. (And I painted 3x blue, 3x red, 3x purple, 3x green, and 3x black - so I'd just sit the black unit if I have to).
  18. Got 9 of 15 Varanguard finished (a project I started before the announcement). It's going to be close, but it'll be awesome (and fitting) if I can field my Archaon and all-Varanguard list on the date the book drops....... WE'RE BAAAAAAACK!!!!
  19. Geez, do I hope Varanguard can still be Batteline if Archaon is your General. I'm in the middle of a big project trying to do my best paint job with 15 varanguard working on that assumption.....🙄
  20. When I "mathed it out" it seemed that Lances were better in most situations (given you are running them with Archaon). Ensorcelled weapons were close behind, but deamon weapons as the scroll has them now were the worst of the three. But I was looking at it from an (admittedly sub-competitive) list of Archaon and 5x3 Varanguard list. The thing would only work anyway (and even then probably not) if you get the charge in and tap the double activation. The lances get their bonuses for the entire turn on which they charged, so it works for the double activation as well. Obviously if you fail the charge, you'd have been better off with ensorcelled weapons, but they are not that much better that it would not have been worth it to equip everyone with Lances given you are going to attempt to charge with every unit. (That said, I've seen some run a unit with 2xLances and 1xEnsorcelled, but IMO when you are playing all-elite, I feel hedging just decreases your all ready low chance of winning. You've got to fully commit to being all-out aggressive). Anyway, my 2 cents.
  21. I think the 5+ FNP on Stonehorns might math-out better overall than the 1/2 damage mechanic given all the 1 wound weapons out there. Also a defense to mortal wounds now? Based on what we know, this book might be a major upgrade for BCR anyway. Certainly, it takes them out of the basement I think and into viability.
  22. Based on flimsy evidence, and if they keep the rest of the Stonehorn's warscroll the same, they will now do insane amounts of damage on the charge with the two new charge rule changes. And if they are now +2" move (14"?! plus can charge and run?!) , and they count as 10 models for objective purposes, we now have a BCR army that is at least viable. Still a lot to learn, but I like what I see so far....
