Yes, this is true. But if we are talking about a lord-Commander, there is only one for each stormhost.  Vandus deserved the position more. It is Vandus that claimed ghal maraz, it was Vandus that warned Sigmar to heed the malign portents  and it was Vandus who faced the everchosen in the realm of metal and lived to tell the tale. And it is Vandus who is the inspiring leader of the Hammers of Sigmar. Everything in the lore pointed to Vandus being chosen to be the Lord-Commander, this was a literally stated in a novel.

You must understand, that to me. Someone who has read the lore and stories from the beginning and likes vandus for who he is. Some random dude being chosen as Lord-Commander is extremely disappointing.

But isn't it more like, this Lord Commander has always been so. Was perhaps one of the very first stormcast created. After the Prime whom (let's face it) sits in a little bit of a weird spot lore wise.

Vandus is just like an accomplished Captain. He leads a chamber right? Not the Hammers total. The pairing chosen in the starter box are probably meant to sit at a similar power/importance level.

Hammerhand IS Khorgos Khul in terms of story weighting. Its just that GW writes about SCE far more than Khorne. So he's a powerful warlord but not the most powerful.

But mainly, GW builds their story after models are made. They can and will retcon a bunch of stuff. Luckily this isn't exactly retconning but I understand the feeling of "hey this cool powerful leader isn't being made into the overall leader with all these storied victories?!"

GW will give the Lord Commander EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE storied victories to back up the reason for his existence as a cool model to buy.

What will be interesting I spose is what will the Lord Commander's rules show us? Are we getting an Archaon equivalent (I doubt that)? Will he be a Gotrek lite (though 5 times bigger)?

Personally I hope more for a Katakros "whole army force mulitplier" type (or well, Katakros in 2.0). That'd be neat. Take one character and not need 4 buff pieces. Frees up list writing. the LC can be a semi-beatstick but ultra buff wagon. I like that yea.

I love how this stuff interlaces - GW are like mad scientists or gifted chefs who never read recipes. Sometimes they ****** up but often the balance of model design, rules design and lore to explain it all can result in cool games/stories/models.

  2. OK so I'm gonna give the following a whirl. It kind of doesn't matter with a new book on the way. Still interested in feedback (some of the ideas may continue to work):

    Allegiance: Stormcast Eternals
    - Grand Strategy: Hold the Line (?)
    - Triumphs: Bloodthirsty

Gotrek Gurnisson (435) in Battle Regiment
    - Allies
Drakesworn Templar (450) in Battle Regiment
    - General
    - Tempest Axe
    - Command Trait: Staunch Defender
    - Artefact: Arcane Tome (Universal Artefact)
    - Mount Trait: Storm-winged
Yndrasta the Celestial Spear (300) in Battle Regiment
    Celestant-Prime (325) in Battle Regiment
    5 x Liberators (95) in Battle Regiment
    - Warhammer & Shield
    - 1x Grandhammers
    5 x Liberators (95) in Battle Regiment
    - Warhammer & Shield
    - 1x Grandhammers
    5 x Liberators (95) in Battle Regiment
    - Warhammer & Shield
    - 1x Grandblades
3 x Prosecutors with Stormcall Javelins (95) in Battle Regiment
    - 1x Stormsurge Tridents
    Everblaze Comet (100)
    Battle Regiment
    Artefact

    Total: 1990 / 2000
    Reinforced Units: 0 / 4
    Allies: 435 / 400
    Wounds: 76

    Summary

Its one drop - I've to be very careful with deployment  but I hope to decide (or have a greater chance of deciding) r1.

There's a Gotrek. He'll act as a lone agent to really mess with folks heads (later rounds) as he is wont to do.

There is Yndrastra who can slap but will be used to keep lib blocks alive and battleshock immune too.

There is the Prime because I still rate everything that scroll brings even if Yndrastra is outshining in combat and survivability (orrery and the scepter are still big faves).

There is a Stardrake because I ****** love them.

There are a number of gambles and sacrifices here:

    1. Templar is a mage now. Cast & recast of comet for first 2 rounds. Then (if he's alive :S) mystic shield and in. I'd like to take Master of Magic to utterly guarantee the Comet.

    2. That mage status reduces the durability of the drake. I'll be playing it cautiously as opposed to end of 2.0 with 2x Drakes in my lists.

    3. I'm one drop for the novelty. It's going to mean I've to deploy very smart. Deployment is my biggest weakness tbh and this should really sharpen me up with some hard lessons. I figure I'll have two strats with celestial vs board deployment based on the type of army I face.

    4. I'm sayin adieu to Staunch - and I'm mainly thinking I'll not be casting mystic shield for a few rounds so it's good to have a bit of a bonus.

    5. Nearly ALL the top godhammer strong lists will be tough here. I mean, Gotrek should save me a bit. But I think anyone piloting a strong meta list currently knows how to handle Gotrek...

So the mortals that proc off Shield, happen in ANY battle round correct? They throw it in at the end and I wasn't sure if these happen on 3 and later, or the entire game...

I'd expect a bit of debate about this tbh. I could see it taken both ways  but Im leaning to any round.

Even worse for rules debate - there is no 'any'. So technically if you've 2 units carefully placed you might be able to proc it twice for 2D3 mortals?

  4. I've a question - do we still have a unit with reroll 1s with sigmarite shields (RAW, I doubt RAI)?

    FAQ:

    Page 173, 177, 178, 179, 181 – Sigmarite Shield
    Change the rule to:
‘Worsen the Rend characteristic of weapons that target this unit by 1,
    to a minimum of ‘-’.’

    https://wahapedia.ru/aos/factions/stormcast-eternals/Steelheart-s-Champions

I've checked my physical tome and they are page 161.

    Steelheart's Champions are Redeemer too...

Maybe I'm missing something in the FAQs

    Steelheart Champions meta.

It's hardly that much of an impact in game :D

Not to beat a dead horse, but if Vanquishers have REDEEMER they could have a niche of being a high damage unit that can push objectives well.

Did anyone else notice that the 5 paladins in the back have 3 glaives, a starsoul mace, and an axe?

It's odd, looks like there's 4 protectors (well starsoul mace means you gotta check the helm if you're being ultra wysiwyg and those are hard to see) and 2 Decimators.

I'm guessing some pic cropping/setup mistake.

  6. https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/07/29/the-stormcast-eternals-become-the-ultimate-defenders-of-the-mortal-realms-in-their-best-battletome-yet/

I really like Shield of Civilization. I weep a bit for Staunch Defender but am a bit excited by its interaction with Shield of Civilization. I like the "angry dragons" rule for getting tougher as it destroys.

As a teaser, its just Stormkeep info if I'm not mistaken?

I hope some of these carry over to the classic Scions of the Storm army. Especially:

"Stormkeep armies may also call upon the aid of Krondys, Son of Dracothian, or his moodier brother, Karazai the Scarred."

Emphasis my own. I hope it's not Stormkeep only. That'd be odd.

I call units useless but I play "useless" models all the time. It's fun to make value judgements and try to optimize - that is a big reason I like tournament play - but ultimately it is still a game with miniatures that I want to put on the table because they look cool and I spent a lot of time painting them.

This is the way.  I've taken at least one Stardrake to nearly every tournament I've played in all editions and I don't regret it - even if I could maybe have got further with more optimisation.

A big part of this hobby when you play matched at tournaments is making peace with the way it is.

I would swap exorcist and comet for battlemage  and maybe lifeswarm. Gotrek really needs some speed bonus and in case you could give it also to other characters to ensure a critical charge

That's a pretty good point. You mean wildform right? How would I get a Battlemage and Gotrek into an SCE list? Stormkeeps? Need to bypass the ally limit once Gotrek is in.

I reckon I'll probably pivot 'Star'cast to 'Hero'cast - given how the meta is shaking out. In that respect my logic is:

Libs and Yndrasta (regening low model count battleline and other buffs) together.

Dragon as a distraction and for eating models that are tough to move (plays havoc when you can eat LRL champs and remove casting, or Hekatos models stopping RDR commands from being issued, daemon banners to stop return of models when battleshock rolls around etc)

Then the comet, exorcist and Prime are a tribute to Starcast still ... they could be removed (until new book when we hopefully see prime buffs)...

In that case I could add in the battlemage. I might take an Incantor against hard magic (or 2).

    Concussors are nice right now.

But I wonder if I could then fit in 2 drakes :D obaby!

  9. OK so we've a big book coming soon TM. I've got a lot of stuff painted for SC already. I want to try something from Dominion... I don't want to paint or buy a lot of new things prior to the book.

I also want to think that there's a bit of godmonster/hero smashing required if I play a tournament over the summer.

I'm considering developing on the following and I want to hear if folks have feedback:

    Allegiance: Stormcast Eternals
    - Grand Strategy:
    - Triumphs:
    Drakesworn Templar (450)
    - General
    - Tempest Axe
    - Mount Trait: Storm-winged
    Celestant-Prime (325)
    Yndrasta the Celestial Spear (300)
    Lord-Exorcist (95)
    Gotrek Gurnisson (435)
    - Allies
    5 x Liberators (95)
    - Warhammer & Shield
    5 x Liberators (95)
    - Warhammer & Shield
    5 x Liberators (95)
    - Warhammer & Shield
    Everblaze Comet (100)

    Total: 1990 / 2000
    Reinforced Units: 0 / 4
    Allies: 435 / 400
    Wounds: 75

I'll have to build and paint 2 models total (Yndrasta and Gotrek) - similar to my idea with Kroak (RIP) :P
  10. My first idea that I think I want to try out on the table (minimal painting requirement - Yndastra only).

With a new edition, it's actually kinda moot what ppl take. Synergies and mechanics change, a new tome will come along shortly after Dominion releases (probably). There will be other releases (chariot etc).

I just feel like this is a cool idea:

    starcast 3.0

    Warlord

    LCoSD - 540
    Celestant Prime - 325
    Yndrasta - 300
    Knight Incantor - 130
    Knight Incantor - 130
    1 x 5 Liberators - 95
    Everblaze Comet - 110

    Vanguard

    Lord Castellant - 130
    2 x 5 Liberators - 190
    Aetherwings - 45

    1995

Castellant, aetherwings and 2 lib units have a free (no CP) movement boost to reach objectives or get in range of buffs/synergies

Yndastra sits with 2 libs units (until its time to strike elsewhere) regen-ing the bare bones battleline & giving them battleshock immunity.

1 unit libs in deepstrike to make opponent think.

Prime behaves as normal (on the field spreading wounds most often).

LCoSD tries out their new ward amulet I spose and sits on another objective with Castellant - whose inclusion depends on if their scroll gets a rewrite tbh. For now I'm cleaving close to the original starcast format.

Double incantors as I think magics gonna be even stronger. Will allow trialling of cast/recast of the comet as per Scurvydog above.

    Aetherwings because why not.

  11. With absolutely no information I'm going out on a limb here and saying I'm trying:

    2 Drakes

    Prime (new scroll suspicion)

    caster/support heroes

    Comet

    Cheapest battleline

A number of Dracothian guard (if they're not battleline)

Just a hunch! I've got this gut feeling that Extremis will come out looking rather swell for some reason.

I have only one doubt or suspicion with the whole Starcast concept at the moment, and that is that they seem to be marketing that heroes are even more important... And Starcast is very good at taking out support heroes that are hiding. Maybe GW has thought of this and the core concept of ranged mw chip is gone.

    We'll see :)

  12. We've had a few teasers and while there is so much that is unknown there is almost no point speculating, I feel like what we do know points to a Starcast like build doing a lot of things similar/better than it does now, while the faction overall will get a boost that means the best list is still not Starcast.

    Endless spells: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2021/06/07/cause-more-magical-mayhem-in-the-new-edition-of-warhammer-age-of-sigmar-with-these-prayers-and-endless-spells/

This mentions predatory spells but I find it hard to imagine this won't apply to the majority of endless spells. Double the comet ticks isn't anything to sniff at.

I like this! Stomp is obviously something quite interesting, but most of these look good.
