  4. Most of my gaming life I have been involved in organising events and communities in our wonderful hobby. If there was something I wanted to do in gaming it was to create the best experiences possible for everyone. I just made it happen and I know lots of people out there are the same, volunteering all over the world, organising tournament and events with some even finding their way into professional events management. If you fall into either of these categories or are simply interested in the turbulent world of running the events we all know and love, then this is the article for you. Tournament software is a proverbial mine field, with a vast swathe of programs and websites largely developed by people in it for the love of the hobby. People who do it because they love what we all love and saw a needed tool to run their events. Without people like these we may never have progressed past excel and the old pen and paper approach (also known as the dark era of Tournament Organising.) A few companies have their own products available for us all to use or have them in Beta (seemingly forever), with Wizards of the Coast having the most widely used individual platform by far. With the sheer volume of use it sees day to day for events, the Wizards of the Coast program gets a regular bashing and like most of the older programs, can seem very dated or basic, created with a rigid set of tools for their particular game. This is quickly apparent to anyone constantly hopping between programs as they desperately try to juggle multiple game events. Since opening JustPlay I have been exposed to all of these experiences and lots of other games which have no support in this area at all, which has put me on a constant quest to find the fabled program that works for me doing all the things a modern professional piece of tournament software should do. That constant search for the perfect program has led me to writing this piece and talking about what I finally came to as the seemingly perfect program of choice. Before I get to that though let's just establish exactly what it is we're looking for... What do we want from our tournament software? Pair Swiss correctly (A RANDOM player on the same tournament points as you) Sign up online Submit your list in advance to the software Generates displays of pairings, standings, sign ups and round times for your audio visual equipment Online standings View your pairings on your mobile device RSS feed for people to follow your event online All your scoring and tie breakers in one place No additional maths from you Quick entry of results Great service and support Modern and professional UI And most importantly having it all for free! Tabletop Tournaments is the best piece of Tournament Software I have used by far, it has all the things that you want above and more, plus its simple and easy to use. Just some of the features that make this a great program Supported Games A Game of Throne LCG Android: Netrunner D&D: Attack Wing Epic Armageddon Flames of War Guild Ball Kings of War Star Wars: Armada Star Wars: Imperial Assault Star Wars: X-Wing Star Wars: Destiny Star Wars: The Card Game Warhammer 40k: Conquest Warmahordes Age of Sigmar Age of Sigmar This is what brought me to take the time to write about this program after listening to Podcasts talking about software, hearing reports from players returning from events and hearing what people had to say. All of this inspired me to get in touch with Dennis and ask to get involved in adding AOS to the scoring system so we could start to shift all of our events across. Scoring First I looked at the scoring for the popular events currently happening the SCGT and GW Grand Tournaments so when you add your tournament you can see you have three options for scoring. Different Scoring Drop Down SCGT follows Major Win 30 points Major Loss 0 points Minor Win 20 Points Minor Loss 10 points Draw 15 points GWGT follows Major Win 20 points Major Loss 0 points Minor Win 13 Points Minor Loss 7 points Draw 10 points Will also added the very common Major Win 20 points Major Loss 0 points Minor Win 15 Points Minor Loss 5 points Draw 10 points The best bit about all this is not adding the points manually, in example the players report John Smith gets a Major Win, Tabletop Tournament does the rest in auto filling the loses box and recording the 30-0 in the background, just click the save button and those results are locked in safe. Reporting is Quick and Easy It does not end there, we also have the tiebreaker set as total Warscroll Points killed so when reporting these results, you type in how many points each player got and again Tabletop Tournament does the rest in deciding tiebreakers in an easy to read fashion. The final part is the ability to adjust a players Tournament Points at the end of the final round of Swiss, most commonly used for painting, modelling and list submission soft scores. Easy to Adjust for Soft Scores or Deductions! (finish painting the models next time) Swiss Pairings This program is set to pair people by "true" Swiss i.e. Players on the same Tournament Points play another random player on the same points Tie Breakers should not be taken into account at this point. This is possibly the biggest point of contention or where I have struggled to get a clear answer. I have found that most events pair people on standings but call their event a Swiss Tournament I don't know if people just don't understand what Swiss is or if its just evolved to a more colloquial fashion from having to use excel to pair players and lacking the ability, maybe its intentional. Pairings, Standings and Timers If we're honest with ourselves, who posts paper pairings these days with projectors, flat screen TV's and Chromecast's etc being so cheap? We in the modern gaming world want quick ways to show our players their pairings and standings without 100+ people crammed around a pillar. This program has all this functionality available so you can cast a full screen clock, pairings, signed up players etc. to a big screen and its incredibly clear and easy to read. How the Pairings Display to Cast Clock for your Big Screens and Synced Online! Online All of the above is also on the web server giving players access to all this from their mobile device and even the timer is synced! I recently suggested Dennis to give the TO the ability to hide the standings so we can keep the suspense building up. Players can also register and submit their lists online in advance Text or Image, a simple copy paste from Warscroll Builder is what I requested, allowing me to have them all at hand and available to all players once the event begun. This is also brilliant for players who want to follow the event live, media coverage teams can have them at hand or link to them in Twitch Chat and those players who love digging though lists for the next big meta-game change have tons of data to consume! I also really love the RSS feed allowing you to follow the event and post useful updates like "Lunch Break Round 3 Begins at 1pm" or anything else you wish like spot prizes. You can do surveys like best painted on it where everyone votes and you can even link all your events as a series and log scores over the year and so much more!! I could go on, but I hope you all appreciate how amazing this program could be for you and your events. Check out a recent AOS event I ran and have a nose about the event to see these features. I just wanted to take this chance to thank Dennis for the hard work he had done on this and hope that many more of us chose to use it for our events. I genuinely feel it helps in providing a better service for all our players and helping to bring your events up to a standard I feel all events can easily be at without paying through the nose for software. If its Age of Sigmar or any of the Fantasy Flight Games Events you are running I recommend you give this a go and feel free to let us know how you get on. Thanks for Reading Ritchie

  7. I really love it when an event comes around for a game I have been buzzing about, particularly one like Age of Sigmar when I know I am going to see some beautiful armies on the table too! This event saw 13 players descend on JustPlay and we couldn't help but welcome all the returning players and few new ones, with people travelling all the way from Leeds and Sheffield. We were extremely excited to see these armies in play, but mostly because we had finished some new fantastic boards and terrain I wanted to see in action! Our new Iceage/Realm of Monsters board! Around now I would normally post lost of pics of standings and army lists but you can check these all out over on the event page hosted by Tabletop Tournaments. This is in my opinion the best resource out there for TO's right now and I worked with Dennis over the last week to get the perfect setup to support AOS for this event and hopefully more going forward. Check out my upcoming Video Blog with why I think this software is essential and should be adopted by all AOS events, along with a guide on it's features and how to use it. But lest we ramble on into the extraneous we have to give a massive congratulations to Paul Whitehead for winning the event with his Mixed Destruction list of Savage Orcs with a Rukk and Beastclaw Raiders. Paul took on Craig Carlton in Grudge to start out the day with a very cagey game going to time as they fought over the 3 Places of Power it took along to commit forces fully to the battle. A game well played by both saw a bloody pile of bodies but the final Initiative roll sealed it for Paul, taking a Major Victory and 1980 Warscroll points; arguably a major factor in a one day event. Paul vs Craig in Round 1 His second opponent was Dan Cooper and his lethal Clan Skryre force. Unhappy to face this match, Paul did not seem confident but ultimately his worries did not come to fruition as this was Dan's new army (after a badly timed selling of his Fyreslayers!) and his inexperience in target selection based on his damage output let Paul take a comfortable win in a battle for the Gifts from the heavens. A major win with 2000 points in Paul's favour and a strong boost to his morale. The Skaven are coming! Just a glorious pic on our new terrain Now on the other tables Matt Robertson of Team Wales for the 40K ETC (that some say should have stocks and shares in JustPlay with all the Store credit he has won) was firmly fixed on table two and in game 2 saw a a brutal game, ending in a minor win by JP Stevens. This upset meant the title of Champion would be out if his hands for this event thanks to Matt Carltons two Major wins of his own with another Savage Orc Beastclaw list! A typical Thundertusk stand off was on the cards in this face off with a flurry of measuring threat ranges and keeping each other at bay, particularly as I had rolled Take and Hold. There was some big list differences between the two generals however, Paul fielding two Thundertusks and a solitary Stonehorn and Matt on the reverse but with an additional three Bolt Throwers and no Rukk. Paul and Matt face of on table 1 in round 3 a Major win will take the title for either of them. The Bolt Throwers certainly paid off here with brutal ranged volleys, killing a Thundertusk turn 1 and blowing the match right open. Matt started moving his two Stonehorns up his extreme left flank to swoop in on his opponents objective, avoiding fire from Paul's Rukk and remaining Thundertusk. This was Paul's chance! With the center of the battlefield now left open and Matt's objective only loosely held by 10 Savage Orcs it was time for the Rukk to do its thing, maximizing movement to cross the table and sneak onto Matt's objective, securing the turn 3 win for holding both and it paid off! A devastating moment for Matt but a great read of the game by Paul, taking his third Major win with just 100 warscroll points killed. The final move by Paul to take the Justice Series II championship! He was not finished there though, Paul brought the full package to this event with an incredibly impressive landslide win in the best painting votes for his army also. Our champion Paul Whitehead Thank you to everyone who came to the event, I had a great day running it all and meeting some new faces and I will leave you with some pics from the day. Remember to follow us on facebook for updates on our next event and more upcoming tournament reports. Team JustPlay Original Post

  13. Today I am just going to briefly talk about my plans for painting my new army and my current progress. First thing I am going to do is tackle the Night Goblins with fanatics I have 90 of these to finish. I will be painting all of these in one big chunk I don't recommend this for everyone it takes a lot of discipline to get though this many in one go but I find it the fastest and its so rewarding every time you finish even one wash over 90 models (picking up the first one again less so) I plan to tackle one color per painting session so all the green flesh then wash all the green flesh the next day and so on and its going well at this point I have done eight separate block of color on the models and started the ninth. Of course before I started all this a test model was done now if you are going to try this method be careful not to take to much time on you test model don't get carried away!!! My test model Now I think I was a pretty decent painter back in my day and I have produced some good stuff since then (not this little fella) but what I am is behind the times air brushing and all these new washes that just turn out amazing results with no effort is something in this project I really want to try out but first some new colors for me. 25 years of painting and not much to show for it I spent all my younger years as a dedicated GW regular, who remembers their painting table rules? All you could use was a starter set well that was all I needed we mixed everything it had Chaos Black, Skull White, Goblin Green, Enchanted Blue, Snakebite Leather, Bronzed Flesh, Flesh Wash, Sunburst Yellow, Mithril Silver and Blood Red. Here it is and yes I remembered all the colors before I googled this I have since added a few more things to my old collection few of the new washes and some colors I have been using for this along with my Guild Ball and Gates of Antares Armies I have painted. Onto the steps I will be following to finish the above model Undercoat Black Dry Brush cloaks GW Kantor Blue Wash cloaks GW Nuln Oil Paint flesh GW Goblin Green Wash flesh GW Biel Tan Green Dry brush flesh GW Goblin Green Dry brush flesh 1 part Goblin Green 1 Part Sunburst Yellow Paint all brown areas (bows, quivers, belts etc) Vallejo Model Color At this point I also had black paint on my pallet and tidied up any mess that was not picked up by the brown this whole stage was about sorting out all the Dry Brush mess. Dry Brush the feathers for the bows along with select leather straps in Averland Sunset to make them stand out from the general Brown areas for the next stage Wash all Brown areas including Dry Brushed areas Vallejo Sepia Wash Dry Brush the feather and nets white Pick out teeth White Paint eyes Red This takes us to the final details stage on the models mostly this is the command group flags banners and gongs I will be using this along with the details around the hood to identify my units. Yellow flames like the test model for one unit of 20 along with a yellow banner then a black and white check hood trim on a unit of 20 with banner to match and finally a red flame around my large unit of 40 models (I hope the quickest of the three) and that will finish the painting. This only leaves the bases to finish I am not really into elaborate basing on any model so these have had sand stuck to them which I will Dry Brush like mud then place some Army Painter grass tuffs on them I like them to be able to match most common tables and I find green and brown are the best to colors for this. Right now I am just up to working on the final details stage on all my Night Goblins next blog I will pop in some pics of them all done! Thanks for reading everyone Ritchie
  14. This event is closing in now don't forget to add a Ticket to you're Christmas list
  15. Yea basically I held out for a while then just bought some naughty models
  16. As I wrote previously I knew I was playing Destruction and that I would have the Maw Crusher in my list the next problem was what to take with it I started to speaking to some of the more experience players about what was important to look out for and which units are the best currently so I knew how to judge the units I liked the look of. I was advised to consider when picking any unit how many wounds do I get for my points with 100 for 10 wounds being about average. Wounds and Damage are properly the best two stats in the game right now with rolling to hit and rolling to wound commonly a fixed stat on your opponents own Warscroll not being able to stack a toughness or a armour like stat, no hiding in cover to reduce the to hit rolls so making sure you have plenty of wound is one thing you can do to increase your armies resilience. nice cover pal still hit and wound you on 4+ Now with destruction there are two clear leaders in this category Gitmob Grots and Savage Orrucks both give you 20 wounds for 100 points with all the modern Orrock models (Ironjawz, Bonesplitters) having 2 wounds a model over the older Orcs having 1 I think this really shows that wounds is stat to represent toughness and resilience. Problem with this is I don't like the Gitmob Grots models at all to dated for me and although the Bonespllitters have some amazing models I have had and painted a large army of these in the past and don't fancy doing another one. Please say you agree! those Gitmob heads omg... This led me onto the other Grots, Moonclan they are 20 wounds for 120 points and are no were near as effective in shooting as the Gitmob Grots but have some interesting upsides with nets, lots of banners, gongs, more effective in combat and have Fanatics. Always liked the Moonclan and have previously only had a Night Goblin unit or two in my larger Orc and Goblin armies so was up for getting a solid 80 or so painted up. The grind is real After picking a Maw Crusher, 80 Moonclan Grots with bows with a selection of Fanatics and Shamans meant my battleline was sorted along 2 heroes and a behemoth. I knew from experience that just taking one large monster in any game was a recipe for disaster even if your opponents army is not geared up to deal with behemoths whatever random unit they may have that is will deal with it or they can just control it denying the board etc and prevent it being effective. 2 Maw Crushers was the first choice for me just so I can do a red and green paint job but spending over 1000 points on 2 models did not sit well with me the next obvious choice was the Mangler Squigs but just to glass cannon for me. I finally decided that I needed to move away from what most of us will be used to just seeing Orc and Goblins as a army and look at it as all of Destruction. So I wanting a behemoth and only having 2 heroes in my army which by this point I had learnt were important in the 3 Places of Power scenario I also had no powerful range units. Obvious choice here was the Beastclaw Raiders Thundertusk its behemoth got a crazy shooting attack (2+ to hit doing 6 mortal wounds at full strength) and if I but a Huskard on the back I get a hero also so I ordered 2 of these and 2000points was complete. These guys bring the pain! Leaders Moonclan Grot Shaman (60) Megaboss on Maw-Krusha (520) - General - Trait: Ravager - Artefact: Battle Brew Huskard on Thundertusk (340) Huskard on Thundertusk (340) Units Moonclan Grots x 40 (240) Moonclan Grots x 20 (120) Moonclan Grots x 20 (120) Grot Fanatics x 2 (60) Grot Fanatics x 2 (60) Grot Fanatics x 2 (60) Grot Fanatics x 2 (60) Behemoths War Machines Batallions Total: 1980/2000 Always difficult to pick my army for any Games Workshop game being something I have loved since I was 10 years old whilst knowing I like to play a mix of competitive and narrative games I often get stuck in a middle ground with the inclusion of the Thundertusks I have really leaned to the more competitive side of things with my first list but cant wait to get some more options I love the Fellwater Troll models and the IronJawz Boar Boyz so look forward to painting some of them along with Squigs to really fill out my Moonclan force. Next blog painting and modelling my army.
  17. Thanks for you comment dude will bring you these for all our events and @Foz might be able to shed some light on this list before he jumps to Bonesplitters

  21. At JustPlay we recently held our first Age of Sigmar Tournament with 12 players showing up to do battle at the store. I was really excited for this as Age of Sigmar has had all my focus at the moment eating up any gaming time I have. The calm before the Battle Begins It was great day with some fantastic armies on display and a great mix with Sylvaneth having the biggest showing either as Sylvaneth Allegiance or in Order armies but I will go over most the top performing army lists later. Here are the final standings and you can see all the results on Tiebreak With 3 points for a win going into round 3 we had Matt Robertson (BeastClaw) and Alex Harrison (Order) on Table 1 both with 2 Major Wins and our own local store player Tom Best (Stormcast) also on two wins and 6 points but with only 1 Major Victory needed things to go in his favor on table 1, this round they were playing Three Places of Power. In Matt vs Alex, Matt decided to take the first turn as two of Alex's heroes were in range of his Thundertusks and another one could be reached through his Skink skirmish screen using the 2 inch reach on from the Stonehorns spear he also grabbed 2 of the objectives for himself. This all went to plan killing 2 Way Watchers with Thundertusks and a Battlemage in combat also wiping out 2 units of Skinks not at bad first turn! That said none of Alex's major units had been hurt at all and when they responded things really turned back in his favor especially when he took the double turn killing 2 Stonehorns and a Thundertusk, after that Alex still had enough heroes left to cap objectives and take the major victory. Papa Smurf and his friends Over to our local player Tom taking on Ben's Slyvaneth with his Stormcasts. Tom deployed in the heavens and went second with Ben advancing capping a few objectives and started racking up some early points but things quickly changed. Ben was introduced to a Azyros led Stormcast Eternal strike force and his ability to drop right into combat much to his surprise! Hammer time! Tom took down the Hurricanum in this exchange along with a few more of his heroes eventually leaving Ben with a Treeman sat in his Wildwood well defended who carried on capping points for most the game Ben sniped of couple of Tom's heroes to even things up. Fast forward to the end of turn 4 Tom is trying to shift this Treeman out of his woods and clear him off the objective this was unsuccessful and a final round of objective points were scored keeping him in the lead and eventually securing the game in his favor. Turn 5 was going to be crucial big initiative roll and final combats to resolve to see who got those last caps but time on the round had been called. The game might have been very different as Tom had put himself in a great position to go 3-0. Treelord hanging out The best painted army was also a really tight competition I asked 5 of my regular customers playing Guild Ball to cast a vote on who they thought should win. They really liked lots of what was on display Jack Maiden's Sylvaneth's color scheme was brilliant, some of Joe's Seraphon were mentioned to me also but it came down to Martin Hall's Death Army and Benjamin Savva's Sylvaneth. The runner up was Ben with his Slaanesh inspired army a number of his followers that had taken refuge deep in the forests as they hunted for their master (this and his next idea really inspired me to read some fluff as I do his back story no justice here). 22. A four-page rulebook, bonuses to your roll if you have a moustache, no points values, all the lore that many of us have grown up with gone. Even as a lifetime Games Workshop fan (and ex GW staffer), I was very skeptical of Games Workshop's Age of Sigmar (which will now be referred to as AoS) when it was released, and for a long time afterwards. The development that was apparent in the build up to the release of the Generals Handbook, which would bring points values back to the game, had really sparked my interest. Knowing that during this development Games Workshop had been talking to some of the leading independent tournament organisers in the country (who's independent points systems were being used already by our locals) allowed me to hope that a return to organised play, community involvement and maybe even an attempt at balance was on the cards. Points, coverage and and events GW doing good! Since I decided that I was going to take the plunge into AoS, I have not been disappointed. Tournaments at Warhammer World with modern event coverage, no huge balance issues so far, and most of all a huge boom in the number of people playing - clearly I'm not the only one who's excited! The only issue I had was what army I was going to play... One thing that has never been in doubt since AoS launched was how good the new models are! Stormcast, Fyreslayers and huge monsters of all varieties turned my head but one model really nailed it for me and ultimately was what made my choice for me; the Ironjawz Maw-Krusha. Ever since we got them in stock at JustPlay I'd been eyeing it on the shelf, so that was me playing Destruction! Just look at all these wonderful monsters! With that decided, please join me for my upcoming blog series on AoS both friendly and competitive! In the next article I'll be talking about my first army list, what units I selected and how/why I made that choice. Ritchie
  23. Big thank you to everyone who attended the Age of Sigmar tournament today! Champion: Alex Harrison (Order) £25 store credit Runner Up: Matt Robertson (Destruction) £15 store credit Best painted: Martin Hall £10 And our wooden spoon Jack Maiden Full tournament can be viewed here https://www.tiebreak.co.uk/aos-the-battle-begins/feed
  24. We will have between 10-12 right now, Scenery it will all be set no need to bring anything more than enough we are not using all the warscrolls except one Walls so read that one, the rest will use scenery as the rulebook and they will be pre marked up to save you time. Objectives yep bring your own although we have plenty of things to use if really needed so dont stress aslong as they are around the 30mm mark iam cool with that and measure from the base (unless something really dodgy comes up)
  25. General will be a unit that is a single model doesn't have to be a hero. Mystical whenever in the hero phase up to you to gamble it
