The blue-black looks good on the robes and cloth, less so on the wooden shield (coffin door and circle inside). probably because it comes off as a midnight blue more than black, which is totally rad, and looks like lighting effects from his glowing scythe.

On the wood the question is why is it blue OR black? especially in the cracks where black paint over wood would be chipped off.

    Like your bone color too!

And I think these vampire counts skeletons are freaking awesome models! I'm looking forward to their Aos reboxing before I get more than my starting 20

    Thanks!!!

Ok, here is where I get embarrassed.  I was thinking more of my color scheme than I was thinking about the wood...

Truthfully, I'm trying to keep my pallet limited for the skellies.  I want them to look good, but there are likely to be a lot of them, and I don't want them to take forever to paint.

So, considering that, I guess I have two options, the first is that I could figure out a different way to paint the wood...  I'd likely go graveyard earth with either a Nuln oil or Agrax Earthshade wash to keep it dark and not draw too much attention...  Or, I could just make up a story as to why the wood in this part of the realms is just back.

I still intend to use the blue highlights on the black, since I'm emulating a specific comic book technique here, so I'm not so concerned about realism.

    Thoughts?

  2. Thanks!

For whatever reason, I never seem to get the GW base paints thinned enough.  Not sure why that is...  But that is part of what is going wrong with my flames for sure.  Thank you for the encouragement, I'll give the glaze a try.  I have Guilman blue, which I think should be the correct glaze color.

I forgot to ask, are these GW skeletons? Because the GW ones I've seen are pretty bad, and these look good. I know the Mantic ones are great (the only ones I've seen I really like).

Yup, these are the GW Deathrattle (used to be Vampire Counts) Skellies.  You may be thinking of the Tomb Kings Skellies.  They were not great.  I mean, they had their charm and all, and I liked them...  But not because they were great models.

These in particular are from the Start Collecting Deathrattle box.  But should be exactly the same as what comes in the Skellies box that you can buy separately.

Anyway, you might be thinking of these:

These are some old photo's of my TK skellies.  Top are color test photos.  Bottom is some WIP.

  3. I can see where you are coming from.  But I think the evolving fluff is a key part of this game.  I mean a year ago, nobody had any idea who any of these armies were.  Now, for the ones that have appeared in the books (campaign or novels), and the ones that have gotten Battletomes, we have a ton of awesome information.  I personally think it's kind of cool to have the realms opened up to us a little at a time. Also, I'm not entirely sure if they care if we buy the ranges that haven't been updated.  I'm guessing those lines have made their set up costs back, and AoS is selling better than WHFB, so their good on that count.  See link below for more on this...  Assuming the source is any good.  Also, the last thing they want is more people reading the fluff for units that the crunch isn't settled on.  I mean, they really don't need anyone else rage quitting this game.  So less fluff - less interest in the armies - less people upset when they find out their army doesn't really work together the way they thought.

And of course the simplest, and most likely truest answer IMO, is that they don't actually have enough of the fluff settled for those factions to actually tell you much more about them.  Most likely those factions are still pretty fluid at this point.  No use telling us things that are probably changing fairly regularly.

That all said, I'm starving for more fluff, especially about the various undead factions, so I don't fault you for being upset.
