  1. I hated 9th from the moment I cracked the core rules. What a breath of fresh air that 8th was, 10th is literal blowing smoke in my face. I hate the core rules and I think the game needs to go back to 8th.

As for unit cards and abilities, two sides. Simpler unit cards are a benefit, simpler Allegiance Abilities is something I feel AoS already has, so maybe the only need is to rewrite a massive number of warscrolls.

Unit Coherency: 2" is perfect. 1" is an unnecessary disaster for 6 cavalry models.

6.1 (Using Command Abilities): Replace with the rules for leaders attaching to models.

7.1 (Heroic Actions) and 21.1 (Monsterous Rampages): Put special abilities on the cards. These sections don't need to be here.

Command Abilities (8.4, 11.2, 15.3, etc): Put these as Strategems in one spot, and get rid of the really powerful ones.

The Only War Mission. 3.0 is actually unplayable for free, since the free rules do not contain a default Battlepack or Battleplan.

  2. I've had a pain of a time writing something for this topic, because there's about a hundred different ways I could go with discussion; My personal story as to how I got here, why I have such a massive pile, what my hobby is to me, where I think there are "concerning mental problems" aka Red Flags, any advice I would give. So, I'll just start.

For reference, This is currently my pile (There is another large box of stuff not pictured):

    pile.jpg.4858e7ce4d01dba61ccee2bb51513a52.jpg

These are the armies I collect, which are mostly unpainted minis:

    pile2.jpg.f07338480713d504561ec24b71e1f159.jpg

I have very little mental stress from my pile because all of it fits into what I know motivates me in this hobby.

What is my Hobby Motivation? Collect a decent sized force for every army in the games I have shown a major interest in. 'Completion/Having' it is goal #1, Built to play with is goal #2. Painted is a goal, but I don't get itchy over unpainted models. To be completely frank, I think painting youtubers who push "Slay the Grey" are a major cause of the 'Mental Unrest' problem.

I've collected over 7+ years and spent relatively little of my personal budget. Hobby Motivation led to building spreadsheets and development of my End Goals. Then a combination of Pattern Recognition, Patience, and Selective Buying helped me grow it. I don't care for most secondhand models I've bought, so Christmas Bundles being 30% off pre-discount were a goal. Often times while everyone is excited for the new stuff, I've filed a lot of it away as "Better Deal". For instance, the Seraphon Box coming out in summer isn't high on my list, as I have the Lord Kroak I can proxy as a Slann, I already have 40+ Saurus Warriors and don't need new ones, and while the Skinks on Raptors are cool, I don't want 2 squads, so the box is a pass. Yes, FOMO can be an issue, but I'm secure in my own personal finances that I can buy when I need to.

I don't get the 'mental load' of so many projects because I don't consider it several hundreds of projects. It's 5-6 projects (5-6 different games) with hundreds of minor achievable goals. Each also have their own priority (Ex: I have Infinity models, but I'm not going to bother with them until I have someone I can play).

Do I have a spending issue? Yes and No. Yes because I have several times dropped relatively large sums of money ($2000-3000), but typically this is to get to the end of a collection. No because once I reach the end goal, I don't really buy any more. My AoS purchases last year were the StD box and a number of models to fill out a armies for a campaign (which I've thought about, but sadly not found the time to act upon).

I do have regrets. If I knew I wasn't going to finish 2 of the collections, I probably have avoided purchasing everything. Likewise, I've got Infinity CodeOne all-in-one boxes, but not touched them and probably won't for a while. I also regret getting into Fantasy/AoS, but only because I would have done 40K first. My local scene was devoid of Fantasy players until a Warhammer store popped up in the area ~4 years ago, so I would have been a bit more in the scene with 40K. I've moved into 40K since, so that's a bit more moot.

I'll return focus to my point though: What is your Hobby Motivation? Once you know, then look at your resources, do you have time, do you have the money, what is stopping you? Focus on that.

  3. Exile gave credit to the setting as a giant sandbox: We can write the story we want and it can still be there due to the scope of the realm. He also mentioned that because of that, we don't always get the clearest defined setting.

The Quest for Ghal Maraz was a mixed start. Introducing the world and its stakes is hard enough. Add in nigh-unbeatable immortal good guys will double that. "They're not immortal, they face consequences for reforging" Yea, this isn't really the case because very few victories get turned into defeats.

Malign Portents wasn't bad, but a bit much of a tribute to the Old World. Broken Realms was a really good escalation of the story, but probably ruined too many established locales. I've heard some good things about Thondia, but haven't read it myself, and I haven't heard there is a lot of plot movement from it. Otherwise, the story only really moves forward in the last fluff paragraph in every Battletome.

Those are the two problems: The story doesn't usually move very fast, and when it does, there are only a few people who talk about it (aforementioned 2+Tough).

  4. Welcome!

If you want to find anyone to talk gaming with, they’ll probably be in the Rumour Thread, because nobody really posts anything anywhere else. I blame the mods for not opening a Rumor Forum, but it is what it is.

    Happy Hunting!

    Hello there mate.

Have you ever heard of the skaven.

    of course they don’t exist.

    but what if they did.

what if all of the, they din’t exist sentence was a scheme of the skaven to keep the puplic away from the watchfull eyes of a thousand red blistering eyes, waiting for the correct moment to strike.

Hope that gets you inspired for the real posterboys of aos

  6. When WFB ended and Age of Sigmar started with the 1.0 rules, there was a small group of people who literally could not take any criticism of the AoS ruleset. None. Total “Your words are violence.” reactions, even to justifiable issues (1.0 Ruleset had a lot of good and a lot of really bad).

Since GW moved Brets, TKs, a lot of High Elves, and a number of metal models to the Legends section, these people are the first to gatekeep the legacy players from playing what they want. Even though with the exception of TKs in an early meta (which was then FAQ’d), most will not be competitive. Even those who have been here from the beginning, because how dare something remind them of the torment they went through at the beginning of the game.

After finishing up my deathguard speed-painting project, I want to do a 180 and take as much time as possible with an AoS army.

Any suggestions for factions to look at?

I was going to suggest Maggotkin of Nurgle as they have a mix of tragedy turned dark comedy, but I don't know how you feel about wanting to do another similar army.

FEC and Skaven listed above are good choices.

Idoneth Deepkin would probably be the best Order faction for you. On the one hand, they raid their allies and want to steal souls. On the other hand, their daddy didn't love them after their birth and wanted to throw them back in the oven, so they ran away. Both of these are very related.

I understand people often want their favourite battletomes updated for the current edition without a long wait, but for me a new battletome with next to no new miniatures is super unexciting.

Maybe it’s a by-product of collecting every army, but a Battletome with no releases never bothers me.

What’s really annoying is the distinct needs for refreshment, and getting nothing. Metal/resin like Skaven and Seraphon, past their primes like Marauders and most of Beasts, and armies that need models to look alive, like Fyreslayers.

I’ve had a rat sized hole in my collection since I started during The End Times, and it’s remained since.

Cool, I'm glad to hear it is doing well in some places. It's just I have an unmade AoS army sitting here that I have been dipping in and out of making and reading stuff like this makes me not want to bother.

I've bought multiple ranges of the original Warmahordes armies since they announced Mk 4. I hated everything that Privateer Press did during the start of Mk 3, and if I am honest, I wasn't keen on the Mk 2 game either. Why did I buy it all? I really really really love the setting and a lot of the early lore. The armies aren't exactly original, but they do the theme well (What would you expect out of the Spanish Inquisition that loves pyromania?).

That AoS army you're building doesn't have to lock into this game. Cities of Sigmar work in any game that uses humans. Slaves to Darkness in anything that's a little darker. A ton of fantasy settings have Orcs, Elves, Goblins, Dwarfs, you name it, you can probably fit it in a setting you enjoy. Hell, build them with your own lore in mind. I've got a desert fantasy world of my own that is mostly unaffiliated with AoS that I've poured any work on said armies into. It's a haven for me and only me, to be honest, I don't need the validation of others to make what I do significant.

I guess here's another "Rah-Rah" moment. Warhammer store opened in my area in 2019. Meet a few people, get a few visitors hooked onto AoS. One guy I like, he's got his son, and his best friend (Nice guy, but complete opposite political alignment from me) into it. I could blame Covid for the lack of being a part of the hobby for 2020, but the reality is that we had twins and I get all sorts of grief from my antisocial wife who (as much as she tells me that I'm impatient), couldn't handle our two (screaming) kids for 3-4 hours. 2022, both of them have been keeping the AoS scene going. They've drifted into Battletech as of a few months ago, and I wouldn't be surprised if the next time I had an opportunity to get out for a meetup, they try to get me into that game before treating me to a game of AoS.

All of this is to say, don't let our discussion of how GW has been managing the game persuade you away from building an army you derive fun from.

OK, I'm starting a Seraphon army from scratch, with my tax return money coming in soon.

Here's what I've got in my Cart on the GW web store.  Does it look reasonable?  If you had a similar budget, and were starting from scratch, what would you do differently?

For reference, This comes out to about CAD650, USD560, GBP340

    • Start Collecting: Seraphon
    • Start Collecting: Skinks
    • Lord Kroak
    • Stegadon
    • Skinks
    • Terradon Riders
    • Saurus Guard

I hemmed and hawed about Kroak vs. Slann plus another box.  Ended up going Rule of Cool for a Kroak.  Could be convinced otherwise.

What’s your goal with the army? Casual collecting or Competitive Crush All Comers List? How much effort are you willing to put into it?

I always advise patience if you aren’t 100% decided on a list (ex. A Battleforce or similar box may be a really good deal).

Lizardmen also have a good number of lots on eBay that with some TLC can be a cheaper deal

ETA: On Kroak vs other Slann, you can always run Kroak as a Counts As.

I added up the points. This box is easily the definition of a curbstomp, or it's balanced and GW have horribly screwed up either army.

50 point increase for Durthu, 30 for Kurnoth Hunters and the Archers are 3x what Spite-Revenants currently are.

20 point increase for Stormvermin and 70 for Deathmaster. That models better be DTF.

Man between the "not bullgor" theridon and another centaur that isn't going to be beasts of chaos I'm really starting to fear they will just soft kill Beasts into slaves to darkness without ever updating them again.

I'll just use Ungor and Gor as Marauders and Bestigor as Chaos Warriors.

Yep, Horns of Hashut without even a single chaos duardin in it. Unlike Iron Golems or Spire Tyrants.

Oh the irony. Some may even say the insult. ;)

I don't think that's all of them. And I'm guessing they're part of a future big box.

ETA: Feel free to write it in a book of grudges though.
