  1. I think that's largely @Tropical Ghost General's point (unless I'm misunderstanding yours!). He recognizes how the rules are written, but since it's whacky and outside from what is "normal" for battleplans, that it's worthy of house ruling out.
  2. My personal take would be if you're going to say your tournament is 100% RAW (admittedly rare, most events I see make their own tweaks), then it should be allowed. If you're not playing RAW, then you can do whatever you like! Correct, this is important information for those who want to play RAW. You need to balance the fact that you can hold an objective remotely with the fact that the controlling unit is more or less out of the fight. You need enough points committed so the unit doesn't get easily wiped off the board while also not committing too much and losing battles elsewhere. RAW has no narrative, it's just literally what's written in the books. My personal opinion on whether it's fair or healthy for the game is irrelevant. It's frankly the opposite, by saying something that is RAW isn't legal, you (the Royal You, not you specifically) are changing the game rules to suit one's idea of what the game should be. I personally disagree, and prefer to play with the rules as we have them instead of what we want them to be. But for those players or TOs that feel they need to modify the rules for whatever reason, then they're more than welcome to house rule. I won't deny your personal experience or even disagree that TOs out there wouldn't allow it. I'm just saying that it's legal RAW. I would never argue with a TO for running the event the way they like. Personally, if I wanted to do it at an event I would just do it, since it's RAW legal, and if the other player took issue with it we would call over a TO. I would explain how by RAW it's legal, and then abide by whatever the TO's determination. If they want to house rule it then that's fine and I would only ask that they clarify the rules pack in the future. I mean, I don't think we even disagree really, it's just our personal preferences. I prefer to play by 100% RAW, you prefer to play by RAW most of the time except where you think it leads to a perceived negative play experience. I sincerely don't take issue with how TOs or your home tables play it. As always, I enjoy and appreciate your perspective @Tropical Ghost General and hope this conversation doesn't come off as disrespectful.
  3. I can't speak for @Dead Scribe or others but for me definitely not. If I'm in any Matched Play competitive tournament, my main goal is to win (legally of course). How I get there doesn't really matter. Plus how cool is it seeing two fully painted armies, regardless of meta status, crash in to each other? Tournaments are probably one of the best ways to see your army battle a wide variety of other armies on the field. That's entirely a problem for the person who thinks that, not me. They're projecting their feelings about the game on my performance. Plus you get used to it, people always hate on the "netdecking" equivalent. I too would probably go 2-3 with a top tier Slaanesh list, I'm a garbage player but trying to stay focused on constantly improving and getting better than worrying how people judge my performance. I think it's relatively on topic since we're asking about WHY people bring the lists they do. A lot of different people have a million different reasons, even in something as "narrow" as tournament play. The old Magic paradigm of Spike, Timmy, and Johnny is alive and well in AoS and almost every other game. And as is often the case, most people are a combination of these characterizations.
  4. I mean, you're not playing RAW if you're deciding what is and isn't a loophole lol. That by definition isn't playing RAW. Like I said, you and TOs are welcome to house rule whatever you want. Sadly, if Reikenor ignores the wound via Deathless Spirits, he doesn't get his casting bonus. I wish Deathless Spirits was optional. (I hate it too )
  5. At our tables we always play RAW to avoid any misunderstandings. The rules are pretty explicit but you're welcome to house rule whatever you like
  6. I'm pretty sure this is incorrect but I'll have to gather some sources to prove it. I think it was an FAQ question. Edit: Yup found it!
  7. Listen @Phasteon, I'm sure you're a wonderful person, but what I think we are taking issue with is you discouraging someone from trying to learn because of your personal views. When you said Rune's question was disgraceful, that was pretty personal. We've established you think this is poor form and that myself and a couple others don't. Probably not much more that can be said. You can get the last word if you want, but I think we should switch back to OBR discussion.
  8. "It's fine to read and ask questions" and then in the same sentence you say some questions aren't fine. It's delusional (or terrible hyperbole) to think that asking for advice against a new army is the equivalent of God Mode in a video game. Either way, you shouldn't try and make someone feel bad for wanting to learn. That's textbook anti-intellectualism. With pleasure. @Rune Also what points level are you guys playing? 2k? And do you know what Bonehost they're going with? I'm just assuming its Petrifex but if it's another one that might switch things up.
  9. Ignore the hater, you shouldn't be ashamed for trying to do some research ahead of time. The crawlers will definitely be a problem so if you're able to sneak a unit with Soulscream Bridge to his back line and put pressure on the crawler that'll definitely help. Might be more helpful to know what list you're running. Most of the OBR lists I've seen run at most one battalion so around 5 drops maybe? A more experienced player could probably chime in better.
  10. This is obviously just a ploy for GW to get in on that sweet, sweet fancy dice cup market. Faction specific terrain was just the beginning! 🤣
  11. I'm sorry I don't have the time right now to give your post the answer it deserves, because you did a really great job. It's funny because the Khorne army is actually also mine, and I build it up so my brother would be able to play against me. So I'm intimately familiar with why that army is set up the way it is, but you helped pull my perspective back on my own army. I knew it was (very) sub optimal, but I guess I was deluding myself in to thinking things were closer than they are. Maybe deep down I've known for awhile. Unfortunately I think I also knew deep down that the answer was "buy more stuff". I think the difficult part of that for me is, why bother spending the $200 CAD for the list you suggested, when I could put that money and time building and painting towards an army that can actually compete, like OBR.
  12. Just played the worst game of AoS I've ever had :(. My brother and I are doing a Forbidden Power campaign and today was our 2nd mission. I'm on a mean losing streak against his Khorne and was hoping to break it by overwhelming him with magic, since I can't beat him in the combat phase. My List: His List: We played the Unlock the Vault scenario and he took turn 1. I deployed mostly in the middle to keep my Wizards near the Penumbral Engine for extra points and screened everything with Chainrasps. He deployed wide, with Bloodreavers screening Bloodwarriors screening the Skullreapers and Heroes. He summoned the Hexgorger Skulls and moved them to cover Arkhan, Reikenor, and the Guardian of Souls. With Ever Onwards, Killing Frenzy, and Whipped to Fury, he flung a 10 man of Bloodreavers at my front line of Chainrasps, doing just enough to take them all out. My Grimghasts counter charged, taking out the Bloodreavers. My turn, I start casting spells and rolled unmodified 8's on two spells in the first four I cast. 2d6 MWs to all three of my wizards took out Reikenor and the Guardian of Souls, nuking my chances of winning. We decided to just call it there since there was no way I could contest any objective with what I had left. In hindsight I guess I should have deployed as far back as possible, but I don't see how I could have kept my Wizards near the objective to generate points while avoiding the Hexgorgers. And I felt like I couldn't afford to not cast spells since my list was focusing on using those to make his forces more manageable in the combat phase. Anyways, I'm feeling really down on Nighthaunt these days and have basically given up on painting them. I can't win at a home table so there isn't much motivation to bring them in to a LGS. If you have any list suggestions to beat this Khorne list I'm all ears, here's what I have available:
  13. Hey folks, Does Korghos Khul/Mighty Lord of Khorne's Reality-Splitting Axe ability still trigger at the end of the phase if KK/MLoK are slain before the end of the phase? I can see arguments for both yes and no and would be interested in your thoughts or rules support. On the one hand, the ability states that as long as any wounds are inflicted, the ability triggers. On the other hand, do model's abilities still activate if they aren't on the battlefield?
  14. Yeah the rules are pretty clear. If you charged, you get to pile in (as per the quoted rules). You usually get to pile in 3", but the CA lets you increase that. If you had enough RDP, you could pile in as far as your RDP allow. To further @Gwendar's point, the abilities that clarify you can pile in from further away from normal are there to allow you to avoid charging if you so choose.
  15. That's actually incorrect, as per this FAQ (Core Rules Designer's Commentary, Movement, pg. 4): And this one (Core Rules Designer's Commentary, Charge Phase, pg. 5): So as long as you have a piece of terrain to "stick" to, you can place models in mid air. It was my understanding of @Neck-Romantic's situation that the enemy was using nearby terrain to box out his models so my point was that they could take advantage of this rule to counter that strategy.
  16. Fair enough, can't account for house rules of course. Edit: @Neck-Romantic I was thinking about it a bit more and it's understandable that it's frustrating to play under those circumstances. The fact that the whole army flies is baked in to our points cost and playing that way is a significant nerf to the Fly ability. Its hard enough playing NH as is, playing without the proper Fly rules is like tying both arms behind your back since you can't take advantage of free vertical movement =\.
  17. I might be misunderstanding you, but the whole of NH can fly, so terrain and whether or not a model has footprint is irrelevant. You can put your models anywhere so terrain might as well not exist for an NH player. Edit: For example, if a bunch of eels are on the ground and surrounded by tall terrain pieces, you can say Lady Olynder is climbing on the terrain 3.000001" above the Eels. You won't be able to physically place her but you can put her somewhere close and just speak your intention. Then when you charge you say she charges to be 0.5" above the Eels' base. As a different example, if the Eels occupy a cylindrical piece of terrain that's 6" tall, you can move Lady Olynder approximately half way up the terrain piece and say she is 3.001" away from the eels, then she charges you say she moves up the terrain to land is 0.5" away. Again she can't physically float, but as long as you and your opponent understand where the model actually is you can have them nearby.
  18. Funnily enough this is the exact list I landed on as well. I was also considering doing a 3/3 split for Immortis and Stalkers, dropping 3x Immortis for a Crawler, but the more I think about it the more like 6x Stalkers seems like the right call. The real question in my mind is how well units of 10 Mortek Guard will perform on the field. Arkhan and the Boneshaper both need the unit to survive to get their heals off, so getting double turned might decimate the objective holders.
  19. Scenery I'd say is a must have, it's free and is probably one of the best faction specific terrain pieces in the game. The shrieker and the carrion bird are getting a lot of attention, but I think all three are pretty good. I think it's worth getting the box, at least one will probably see regular play. Plus they're super cheap points wise and can fill in those weird gaps where you have less than 100 points available.
  20. My only thought is that I would go for the bludgeons instead of the sickles on the Harvester. There are so many sources of +1 hit in this army that I think you'll get more mileage out of some extra MWs. Interested to hear what others think though!
  21. Yup, they don't use CPs in the same way other armies due, they have the following as an allegiance ability You cannot use Command Points, instead use Relentless Discipline (RD) points. Start of each battle round before deciding who has priority, you get RD points for: each OB hero on the battlefield (1 each) Each LIEGE unit on the battlefield (1 each) each battalion in your army (1 each) Having Katakros in your army (3) Rolling a dice for each other unit, and rolling a 6 (1 per 6 rolled) Used the same as Command Points, but only for abilities on OB warscrolls, and Unstoppable Advance RD points do not carry over between battle rounds.
  22. The line item is Vokmortion OR 1 Boneshaper OR 1 Soulreaper OR 1 Soul Mason
  23. @mikethefish Maybe one day something similar will work its way in to AoS, like I said, a man can dream! I also don't think my post contributes well enough to the topic so I'll add in some hobby stuff. Currently working on finishing painting my last batch of Grimghast Reapers and heroes before I can tackle Arkhan and Reikenor (working from smallest models to largest). After that I'll finally be able to start buying the Bonereapers without aggroing the wife!
  24. Maybe! I just pulled up the PDF and skimmed it since I'm at work and I'm not familiar at all with Warmachine, but I like the terrain and TO/EO sections. And Strength of Schedule and no soft scores 😍
