I feel like the loss of the BoC has really impacted the narrative this edition- The setup for something as good as the Broken Realms series exists, but it feels like they didn't commit to it because the plotline needed to set it up was scrapped. You can see this because I'm pretty sure every codex covers how the faction handles Incarnates, but the Incarnates themselves weren't ever used as a plot point outside of Thondia. (Speculation) This was probably due to both leading up to a BoC refresh and a different story than the Dawnbringer Crusades that probably focused more on Kragnos, . I think the only major through lines I can think of for the crusades that are actually starting to pay off are the CoS, FEC, Skaven, S2D, and the OBR of all people (Specifically the "Mysterious Hooded Speaker of Nagash's will" is literally Arkhan, the OBR battletome says that this is just what he's doing currently).

It feels weird, I think is the main point of all of this.

There were also a few more broken realm plot point that got sideline as well.

Morathi taking Anvilguard (may be relevant in 4th)

Teclis getting greviously wounded by Nagash

the Dark sky event in Chamon (maybe eventually when we get to focus on that realm) the whole Be’lekor plot has been on hold.

Grugni coming back but then he just made new armor that fix the Dark sky event instead of helping dwarfkind

Gordrakk decided to go siege the Allpoints.

Slaanesh chain are always getting looser by the day and those two twins have yet to do anything after being defeated in Ghur.

From where I'm sitting, that narrative had to eventually introduce Morghur to the setting and have some pretty big fallout for the Realms as a whole. The incarnates seemed to be something important, that were going to be built on, in a similar way to how Endless Spells helped to emphasize some aspects of the setting.

GW deciding to drop beasts had to have been something they planned for for awhile internally; likely around when they were nailing down TOW's ruleset. Timeline-wise, this shaking out about two years ago feels right. That narrative just sort of faded away when I was expecting/anticipating at least one sequel.

If it was a multi-book story about how the Incarnates started showing up and the Beastmen began to corrupt them into/for Morghur, snowballing into the AoS Beastmen reboot, I could see why someone saying "yo AoS team, you're losing beastmen" would result in the entire narrative getting axed. Alarielle has also been pretty quiet since the Rite of Life, which (to me) supports the perspective her and the beasts would have finally had a narrative arc focused on the Alarielle/Morghur mud wrestling match that ive been thirsting for since 2003

Considering that Broken realm Allarielle was scrap (allegedly) in 2nd edition which had her fight Beastmen and completing the Rite of life, it may have even been earlier when they decided the fate of BoC

I prefer Dawnbringers because Broken Reams feels more like a fight between gods and big names and Dawnbringers is more the mortals in the mortal realms. And Ushoran and Zenestra IMO are the best characters from the whole BR and 3rd ed.

Well it just maybe just me but I felt the narrative felt flat with Dawnbringer then with Broken realms, there not as much discourse or discussion about the storyline.

though it could be the content of the books did feel lacking like some of PTG sections

How about we start at 60 USD and make GW haggle their way up 😭

I finally got my hands on some Dawnbringer books, and though I love how much narrative and worldbuilding text there is... I was disappointed at the lack of (new) art in the books.

They for the most part did really well with Broken realm that Dawnbringer felt like a disappointment narrative wise.

though I always felt that Narrative books in general just don’t sell well.

I get it they're kind of a one-trick pony, but well...when you think about it, a lot of AoS factions are kinda in the same situation. It's not really a DoK problem.

Granted some of the 1.5 to 2.0 armies (Deepkin, DK, KO, FS, OBR sort of) who haven’t gotten an expansion to their range so they are a bit limited in their playstyle and versatility.

of course some armies like Ironjawz are just design to be straightforward even with an expansion recently.

The fact that it appears in lore or illustration doesn't make them AoS kits, IMO. If you have nothing else to display, you have to do it with WHFB minis. Hurricanum will disappear at the same time as the varied mages' kit.

Example being Demigryphs and Greatswords. Despite artwork they both got canned when Freeguild got their update.

Gw has a tendency lately to leave 1 elite infantry untouched when redoing a line, see seraphon with temple guard and sbg with grave guard. No idea when they will update those kits. Theory floating around was that they left it for warcry update, but it has been 3 years since sbg was released and we still have them..

they will 100% be updated since we got the test models through WHU and I hope its pretty soon

They redid Chosen when slaves got their second wave, it just a timing thing really and that was not warcry but a proper boxset.

they tend to be hesitant to update old plastic to new plastic as interest tends to be lower for them then say redone plastic battleline.

I'm not 100% on this, but aren't the new Water temple Lumineth looking to become a fairly standard unit for AOS (even if half of them wear overalls).

It's kind of a mixed bag and while I don't want GW to limit themselves needlessly with WarCry, it feels like a fantastic avenue for updating/introducing stuff like Gutter/Night Runners, Plague Monks, Grave Guard, Saurus Guard, Greatswordsmen, etc.

They are all in different base size though and maybe different profile between the armor one and the light blue guys. they are not as bad as the new NH, OBR, and Sylvaneth which are just complete mix max of different type of creatures.

but I feel it be better if refreshes came from proper AoS release and not Warcry where they have to design them all different profiles hence why I argue things like Plague monks and Saurus warriors should not be refresh through warcry. Since AoS boxes are better for bulk buying then Warcry.

Anyway Majority of Warcry release have been just unique Specilist units that are brand new with only Gorgers and Camo Skinks being replacement for niche units.

I would say Wildercorpses are also a standard unit, without necessarily being a specialist one, that was released via Warcry. And little by little, IMO, we will see more cases like this one.

Don’t know about that the more recent warbands have been buy one for collection but not a going to be a main part of your army.

they look like they turning away from players that buying 30 Slitterfangs to make up your army and now warbands being just a one off  flavorful unit now. with maybe a niche utility use.

Don't take what happened as the rule but as the exception. Almost all the warbands removed were darkoaths and from the first edition. That was not a coincidence. And nowadays GW releases units for AoS using warcry, so it wouldn't be that weird to have plague monks. The only thing is that it won't be that soon, IMO.

Well Warcry warbands are for warcry the game first and foremost. Warbands have to be design for each individual model to serve a role in the game but they don’t translate well as standard unit in AoS. Chameleon Skink are the onky warband that every replace a unit  from warcry to AoS but it only worked because CHam Skinks are a Specialist unit  for the most part. Gorger also replace a unit but change the profile and are also a specilist unit

a unit like Plague monks is like Clanrats, a standard unit with uniform design that probably should be release from AoS proper and not Warcry.

  11. Gutter runner maybe because they would fit in as a more of a specilist unit which works for Warcry but Plague monks being a more standard unit would probably not work as a warcry warband. (Given that warcry units can be discontinued at anytime now, both probably are not suited as warcry release for the long term)

Of course I doubt this Skaven release will cover every unit that need to be refresh or expand each clan all at once. It probably just Masterclan/Skyre units, Moulder with Rat Ogors, and brand new units.

  12. I don’t know I got the feeling everyone was tired of Hammer of Sigmar. (Though that may have been because every hero character was from Hammer except few like Gardus)

maybe it a good thing to explore the other Stormhost and they maybe releasing the Hallow Knight Lord Commander this time around.

Did anything actually happen with Azazel in the ETs? Or was he another character that GW forgot about?

Also would love to see him added. I know some aren't fans of the amount GW leans on old characters in AoS but I love seeing remastered characters when they make sense, and a Daemon Prince would definitely have survived into AoS.

He got bonked back into the warp by Sigmar/ Karl Franz during the End time.

  14. From what I recall from years past, an edition year is usually the most busiest for AoS and where they are trying to release their full slate on time before the edition change during the summer. Then it followed up by a 6 month lull in release  and picks back up during the next year with the battletome train and a few releases.

AoS 2.0 had Maggotkin, DoK, Deepkin, Malign Portent, then Soul war release with NH and SCE.

AoS 3.0 had Broken realm with multitude of big character models, LRL wave 2, Soulblight gravelords, Dominion with Thunderstrike and Kruleboyz.

And AoS 4.0 had the rest of the Dawnbringer books plus special character boxes, FEC release, the last minute Darkoath box, and then of course the new Boxset with more SCE and Skaven.

It's always been this way for new GW, can't imagine them holding stuff back and not releasing anything for like 3 full months. And to be fair, most people who buy GW products care about minis first and rules second so they know people are still going to buy this box out on preorder day

They are a model company first and foremost.

  16.  GW can also replace a dated model with a new model but that said new model may not be an exact replacement. Like Handgunner being replace with Fusiliers. It not a full squating but a softer one.

of course since it’s a reboot edition, it quite possibly that they be more focus on churning out battletomes (w/ standard hero model) then big model releases at least for the beginning of this edition. (Granted in 40K, they did release a Kroot expansion for Tau so something’s may still happen)
