  1. I might go for them. I started a small skaven force with echoes of doom, so it might be fun to paint up some older leaders.
  2. The Votann trailer was also set on a space hulk, so I think tha t is entirely possible. If they do dwarves vs genestealers then I'd actually get a kill team set for once! I feel that warcry is kind of tapping out the chaos concepts. Besides doing the big four, they're already covering a lot of design space. If they keep doing more, they run the risk of starting to repeat themselves. Shaking things up with non chaos lets them move into unexplored territory again!
  3. I don't think it wil be a new edition, seems more like ash wastes for necromunda, a new setting, slight expansion and tweak of the rules, but ultimately the same game as before. i know they are addicted to a short edition cycle for the main games, but I don't think they can afford to keep reinventing the wheel for every side game. Look at underworlds, how much actually changes from one season to he nexf?
  4. As a long time lizardmen fan I can't see the problem with a lot of their models. Sure cold ones are quite cartoony, but what's wrong with chameleons, kroxigor or salamanders besides them being resin? Sure it's a bad material but the models look fine to me? The 3rd party lizzies certainly set a n astronomically high bar, but that doesn't mean the gw sculpts are bad, just not as good.
  5. This is my thought too. I generally use them as a glaze, to tint the surface less than contrast would. Its rare I want a shade to just go into the recesses, but when I do, I can always dilute it a little. I feel as though they've just focused on one potential use of these paints, and in trying to make that "better" they've made the tool less versatile as a result. I don't want to say its just pandering to the lowest common denominator, but serious, dilution isn't that difficult people!
  6. 3) varghulf, it's actually a nice model but it's the last resin model in all of death, so its time has come. 2) chaos dwarf iron daemon. Phenomenal model now sadly out of production, but I want loads of weapon options on a new plastic version so that I can convert a whole fleet of evil doom trains! 1) and while I'm being cheeky and mentiing oop stuff... Tomb Kings necrosphynx! Come on gw, you know you want to! Bonus, bring back the dread maw as a new plastc beasty for necromunda ash wastes. I mean it writes itself right?
  7. Nothing wrong with that, I'll check that out! Thanks for the link.
  8. I'm sorry to hear that, though not surprised. I've enjoyed you AoS novels a lot despite any executive meddling. I must admit though that I'm not familiar with your wider work. Do you have series where you do have creative control, where you are able to be more "literary"* than when doing work for hire? * For want of a better term. I'm firmly of the opinion that genre writing can be just as literary as so called literary fiction itself, if not more so. But there is a clear difference between something like one of Joe Abercrombie's novels and the best of what black library puts out, even if the subject matter is ostensibly the same.
  9. Very disappointed to hear that they are getting rid of the gloss wash paints. That seems like quite a poor trade off for what they are adding. I use Nuln oil gloss on so many things... Does anyone know of a good alternative? Does one of the other paint ranges make a good gloss black wash, or is there a reliable gloss varnish I could put over whatever the regular Nuln oil ends up looking like? I've got some big projects in progress which are going to need buckets of the stuff, so I'm quite alarmed that they are just scrapping it with little warning!
  10. That's a lot of new stuff, that doesn't leave much that we know about in the pipeline does it? Just the upcoming but not soon Slaves to Darkness and warcry right?
  11. I believe that circular accent on tje A comes from Norwegian so is a different stress to the German umlaut. I *think* its an "au", see Alesund in Norway for a pronunciation example.
  12. I think part of the problem isn't just having good lore or not. Rather its how well coupled that lore is to the game. BL novels have always introduced a lot of great characters because they are character driven. That's how stories work. But the war game doesn't reflect that. This was true in WFB to an extent, but you at least had Gotrek and Felix in the dwarf books and some rpg material front and centre in the codexes (lizardmen had maps of cities, info on the glyphs etc other books had poems and flavourful little bits of background. They still try to do that, but haven't been as good at it since 7e) Soulbound is great, but it's off as its ow n little side thing which gw don't acknowledge or promote. I think they barely give it more attention than their mobile games.
  13. I've said it before, but I'll say it again. AoS and WFB have the exact opposite problem. Warhammer fantasy was a really bad idea executed really well. They started from the most generic seed; historical earth with fantasy races. But they wrote it in a really compelling, really engaging way. They made excellent use of anarchic themes, social and religious tension, and the fact that no one was good, and everyone had centuries long feuds to really give that world a sense of depth and character which it perhaps didn't deserve. Add in the excellent chaos cosmology, and WFB is rightly beloved. It provided a grim and gritty "punk" counterpart to D&D at a time when that really resonated, and will go down in history as one of the best fantasy settings ever as a result. Age of Sigmar is a much better idea, but executed quite poorly. The multiverse they've created for this game has amazing potential, and is the perfect playground both for the game it supports and those classic "warhammer-y" themes of gods and ideologies clashing in worlds of magic, while chaos devours all from below. Done well it produces some spectacular ideas, and provides a far more open and diverse sandbox than what came before. Unfortunately the quality just doesn't live up to its predecessor. I don't even know that its not well written, some parts of AoS really are great. Army books in this day and age aren't as engaging as they once were, but I think the main problem is one of presentation. The derpy names and uninspired presentation of the setting put off a lot of folks who would recognise how brilliant it was if they only read the lore and gave it a chance. 40K is successful because it is the best of both worlds. It was always the better idea, and the more creative lore than WFB, but it was written at a time when warhammer had that edge it needed to get popular, and become beloved. AoS is still young, so might catch up, but I think it would take quite a lot for it to do so.
  14. Tricky one. It depends on the definitions of what games I guess. I spend more time playing RPGs than I do painting, but far more time painting and building than I do playing wargames. I gave up playing AoS last year with the dawn of 3e, and since then have only played warcry once, and 40K maybe twice when it comes to GW games. We're starting a necromunda campaign, so that will get me gaming a little more, but really its mostly been frostgrave and stargrave about monthly. It took a while to come to terms with it but I've realised that while I love building and painting massive armies, I have zero interest in playing mass battle games anymore. I'm still reading the forums because this is a great community, and I'm liking the new models that come out, but if I do play again it will probably just be 2e, since I have everything I need for that. So for all intents and purposes its hobby all the way for me. Just jumping into skaven with the Echoes of Doom release so I'm not going to be short on stuff to paint... I thought about getting some of them for years, but didn't want another horde army. Now I know I don't need to worry about it being a functional army I can just paint the models for fun. So much happier.
  15. Archaon did come out during End times, yes. I'd argue he's still very much an AoS model though, more so than an old world one. By the time his horse turned into a dragon the writing was on the wall!
  16. Tricky one. In terms of options and customisation it's probably the old battlemages kit. You can do a lot with that. The entire nighthaunt range is amazing, but I couldn't single out a specific kit. Then you have the underworld bands. I love the ones that give you the main army in microcosm, they are lovely little sets!
  17. Not as exciting but have you considered paint and peripherals? I don't know what brands you prefer, so a GW voucher might not get you your preferred type, but a few pots of contrast paint or washes always come in handy, and it saves real money for the HH minis when they come out.
  18. Apologies oh Pharaoh! The mighty sphynxes of yore were indeed fine beasts and the greatest steeds a Tomb King or Queen could ask for. Mine sit in pride of place in my display cabinet, and I hope that you are one day able to get so e of your very own. There are a few other companies which make tomb kings counts as, but I don't know of anything that quite replicates those kits. I feel like I've see some 3d printable options maybe from one page rules. May the sands consume whoever let those beasts go extinct, and may Nehekhara never be forgotten!
  19. I wouldn't be so sure. Its a specialist game rather than a major one, so they won't be allergic to printing rules for models they don't sell. This is true for LotR where you basically have two big compendiums covering every unit in the game. I also do think that some cross compatibility is inevitable, even if the GW accountants would rather that everyone had to buy two of the same model to play the two different games. I posted this breakdown in the old world thread a month or two back, but I think it all still holds true: There are a lot of AoS factions which in whole or in part replicate classic WFB armies, and it wouldn't take too much work to get the majority of the game back up and running. Ready to go, just need some heroes appropriate to the era: Warriors of Chaos (Mostly still out there as S2D) Beasts of Chaos (All still in production as themselves) Skaven (All still in production as themselves) Lizardmen (All still in production as Seraphon) Ogre Kingdoms (All still in production as mawtribes) Dark Elves (Almost all still in production as part of CoS) The Empire (Almost all still in Cities, but might need an update to match the aesthetic of the earlier era, if Dawnbringers are coming, expect there to be Crossover potential!) High Elves (Half the Lumineth range is usable as updated High Elves) Vampire Counts (Half the Soulblight range is usable as updated VC) Night Goblins (Half the Gloomspite range is usable as updated Night Goblins) Still have a core of models, but would benefit from more variety Wood Elves (Still a few in Cities, and half of Sylvaneth covers the tree spirits, mostly. New Glade Guard, Ariel and Orion, and Tree kin, and you'd basically be there. I could see that and a few other shiny things coming with a "battle for Athel Loren” campaign book, and us being done!) Dwarfs (They still have a core of stuff in cities, but are missing enough that they would need a fairly big release to cover the gaps. You can't really use fyreslayers as slayers, we need thunderers, quarellers, regular dwarfs, and of course heroes, if dispossessed are coming, expect there to be crossover potential!) Savage Orcs (You could make the case for expanding bonesplitters and making a more solid Savage Orcs army at the same time, but they were always a subfaction anyway, so I don't think its that likely they'd get devoted support) Can't really use anything currently on sale, so would need a rerelease: Tomb Kings (None of the current undead really fit, but you could put the Sphynx, Snake and Tomb Guard kits back into production, and then you'd basically just need skeleton archers and some updated chariots. Since we've not got skelly archers in soulblight there could even be some crossoever potential there if they did a Nu-lamia update paired with an updated Tomb Kings release.) Chaos Dwarfs (but there are all those rumours right? I'd expect that if they do come, half the range will match their old loadout while the other half with be realms-y like the elves and vampires.) Brettonia (This is the first big one. Like Tomb Kings they have a lot of old kits, but I feel like fewer hold up, and would be likely to be rereleased as is. I think that a Kislev style campaign/expansion where they really update and expand them would be sure to get them brownie points with the diehard fanbase though. I could see it being one of the earlier campaigns. Until then though people can probably muddle through with old models or knights and peasants from other manufacturers. Somewhere a GW accountant would be crying, but the fanbase would be ok.) Orcs and Goblins (This is the other really big gap in the line, and in my opinion the most important one. We could get by without Bretonians or even my beloved Tomb Kings until such time as they saw fit to do an expansion centred on them. Classic orcs and goblins though are such a central threat to the old world that I think they would have to do something with them. Again I'm not sure that the old kits hold up too well, and its not long since they were phased out. Unlike the other recently updated armies Kruleboyz just don't replicate the classic army. So they wouldn't be usable as proxies I don't think. We've not heard much about orcs in the previews so far, but if I had to pick a faction to be invading Kislev in the starter set, its they and not chaos whom I would choose.) So there you have it. All three Chaos factions already have pretty good support, as do High Elves and possibly The Empire, who were always the other most popular hero factions. It would take a few solid releases to get full coverage, but not out of step with the kind of support blood bowl or necromunda gets, averaged over a year or two.
  20. That spear definitely looks seraphon to me. The dangling tags are a classic lizardmen design cue, as are the macahuitl spikes on the sides and the geometric patterns. I know we've just spent pages getting our hopes up about ogre s and skaven, only to have that crushed, so I'm not even going to speculate on range refreshes. That said, wr did get Kroak durung broken realms, so that has to mean something!
  21. I ordered a couple of bands, and some of the 40 k models that went at the same time. In the past stuff has dispatched pretty quickly, even when it says 180 days. This time though, nothing 's arrived yet so they are likely through their reserves and casting them up to fill the orders.
  22. I wonder if GW have the same problem with Skaven that the Empire of old did. I bet there are a couple of designers who keep putting their hands up in meetins, and saying "we should probably update skaven" and then their bosses just laugh, and say "Don't be silly, everyone knows there's no such thing!". I was initially dismayed that the Horns of Hashut were humans rather than dwarves, but thinking about it, it does make some sense for the Chaos Dwarfs to send their disposable minions out to scout, rather than their own people. I never got many hobgoblins, but the idea that the faction consisted of a ruling class of Dwarves, served by numerous slave races did make them distinct. I could see them having essentially armies of human Janissaries, not just slaves, but essentially legions of soldiers sent by the realms that pay tribute to the Dawi Zharr Empire. The less armoured models shown off do have the look of slaves, but they don't all look as ragged and beaten down. I guess we'll have to wait and see. This preview has been excellent overall. I've liked a worrying amount of the stuff previewed. Sylvaneth are definitely the highlight, and I love the lady of vines. Chaos I'll be happy to wait and see how it all fits together, but any suggestion that the Dawi Zharr are approaching is alright in my books. I've always been a dwarf fan, so am very excited about each squat preview. The idea that we might get both them and the Chaos Dwarfs delights me immensely! I also think that a lot of the chaos soldiers shown off in 40K are great. I've always been put off by Chaos in that setting, since its just more space marines, but the idea of squads of cultists, mutants and regular soldiers really expands the theme in interesting directions, and could be great for AoS conversions too.
  23. I really like it. Its great to finally see a female dwarf from GW, even if she is for 40K! Hopefully this means that AoS will follow, whenever we next get new dwarves.
