A friendly space to share hobby progress and narrative stories for anything Soulblight Gravelord related.

Thank you @Nactigal for creating the topic :)

Before the recent release of new models and battletome, in my mind I had this idea of what Soulblight Vampire Lords should be: a powerful combination of warlords & necromancers able to command / influence / manipulate way beyond the limited scope of Deadwalkers/Deathrattle (i.e. Nighthaunt and Fleash Eaters).

Anyway I am happy about the release (even if Legion of Grief might disappear, and even if Nighthaunt might no longer benefit from any large-scale resurrection mechanism).

Those WIP concepts attached are from 1-2 years ago but they still fit with what I think SBGL are :)

Except the ghostly things don't actually look like the rest of the nighthaunt range, apart from the couple other hold overs like hexwraiths and tomb banshees.  Nighthaunts in general have a pretty distinct look and style with their shrouds, and their whispy but not cloudy or billowing smoke effects.  The mortis engine really doesn't fit the nighthaunt look.

As for the malignants box, even if the mortis engine was nighthaunt, it would still be a pretty poor box for starting or building up a nighthaunt collection.  The units you'd most want in such a box, chainrasps especially, no character, mortis engine isn't something you'd want to field in multiples, if at all, even if it was a nighthaunt unit, etc.  It's not a good start collecting box and never was.  Even if it were fully playable in nighthaunt, it would still pretty desperately need to be retired and replaced.

I believe that the kind of Hexwraiths tide carrying the entire engine helps a lot for blending the model into a Nighthaunt army, at least it contributes a lot to the confusion.

Somebody (forgot who, probably there) wrote that one "lore" aspect to consider when judging whether or not Mortis Engine is part of NH range is: Driving the model, there is a Necromancer (actually a Corpsemaster/disciple + the relics of what could be the Corpsmaster's Necromancer Master?) trying to control those wraiths flying around the engine. This guy is by nature a Death Mage, not a Nighthaunt (e.g. not a Guardian of Soul). And those NH floating around might have plenty of reasons of hating him because he basically tries to bind them to his will with magic, and to use them. Now, if used in a Legion of Grief army with blessing (!) from the Lady, I guess there is no issue :D

  3. Disclaimer: I have not tested any of the options :D

I have considered (only for comparison) as well: 6 Crypt Flayers as allies (i.e. they shout as well, they fly as well, their cost is in same range 300-380: 340pts).

    Mathematically:

    • Move:
      • 1 Terrorgheist: fly 14", decreasing profile if wounded
      • 6 Crypt Flayers: fly 12"
      • 4 Morghasts: fly 9" + 3D6 charge
    • Points spent per Effective Wounds (against saveable wounds):
      • 1 Terrorgheist: 300 / (14W, Save 4+, DS 6+ = 33.6) = 8.92
      • 6 Crypt Flayers: 340 / (24W, Save 5+, no DS6+ if allies? dunno.. = 36) = 9.44
      • 4 Morghasts: 380 / (24W, Save 4+, DS 6+ = 57.6) = 6.59
    • Points spent per average melee Wounds inflicted to a non-ethereal target saving at 4+:
      • 1 Terrorgheist: 300 /
        • (1 model x 4 attacks x 0.5 TH x 0.66 TW x  0.66 unsaved x 2 dmg) = 1.77-- claws decreasing profile if wounded
        • + (1 model x 3 attacks x 0.33 TH x 0.66 TW x  0.83 unsaved x 2 dmg) = 1.94 -- maw
        • + (1 model x 3 attacks x 0.16 TH x 6 MW) = 3 -- maw MW on 6s TH
          = 44.62
      • 6 Crypt Flayers: 340 /
        • (6 models x 4 attacks x 0.5 TH x 0.66 TW x  0.66 unsaved x 1 dmg) = 5.33 -- talons
        • + (6 models x 4 attacks x 0.16 TH x 1 MW) = 4 -- talons MW on 6s TH
          = 36.42
      • 4 Morghasts: 380 /
        • (4 models x 3 attacks x 0.66 TH x 0.66 TW x  0.83 unsaved x 3 dmg) = 13.33 -- halberds
          = 28.5
    • Additional average MWs with shriek against a Bravery 8 target:
      • 1 Terrorgheist: 0.55 -- shriek 10"
      • 6 Crypt Flayers:
        • 6 x 0.11 = 0.66 -- shriek 10"
        • 6 x 0.55 = 3.33  -- shriek < 3"
      • 4 Morghasts: 0

Numbers are not all but considering  the Morghasts are such cool in term of model and lore... I would say Morghasts anyway 🥰

  4. In term or armour: The 2 models revealed so far are going exactly the way I was hoping :) I had been tempted to convert some 40k Drukhari for making new Vampire Lords, and those new models are really close to this in term of armours. I don't see anymore blood chalices, but maybe the blue drops can capture life essence and heal the bearer?

In term or weapons: Sauron/Nazgul-like big maces and long swords... I love it. This is exactly capturing the specific and troubling essence of the vampires = looking thins, almost fragile, but still magically and unnaturally able to wield heavy weapons at incredible speed. The shield is gorgeous!

In term of shape: I really hope that, if there is a whole army, then the models will not be all derived from a Daughter of Khaine style (female only and crazy hair style ). I hope there will be some diversity. And there will be not only warlords/commanders but also full range of sorcerers/necro specialised, assassins, etc...

In term of stance: I like that the new models are not simply huge beasts/Flesh Eater style. The way the 2 models look at the battlefield from above is so "elite style" I like it, and I can hear them whispering to their own deranged mind: "Indeed, why should I not honour these foolish foes of my unexpected presence in middle of this offending mess they are offering to my eyes, and transform this vain waste of flesh in a master piece of slaughter and soul harvesting..."

I was quite far with my own previous VL conversions (https://twitter.com/guillaume_gte/status/1271652117535694848/photo/1)

But I am not upset. This promising! :)

    Looks teasing 👍

I don’t know how to model a smokey fireball... I guess some wire and then, like you say twirl cotton around it, then paint it. Airbrush should do the trick. Maybe with regular glue, just to have different textures within the smoke, but that’s just an idea. With the wire you can then firmly attach it to the model.

...sorry that it took me so long for finishing them,
but here are my converted/kitbashed Vampire Lords :)

I abandoned the idea of the mutated left arm, and I used many bits:

    • bodies: Idoneth Namarti Thralls & Namarti Reavers
    • wings: DoK Khinerai
    • heads: Spite Revenants
    • left hand: Crypt Ghouls
    • shoulders: Grave Guards
    • cloaks: Dark Riders

If your aiming to match the book image. I think you need to throw in some green glaze for the flames and kabalite green, and Coelia Greenshade for the robe. You also need some White Scar to make the ghostly part more glowy in its brightest highlights. My guess for the robe would be something like:

    base: incubi darkness

    highlight: Kabalite green

    Highlight: Gauseblaster green

    Glaze: Coelia Greenshade.

    then maybe redo highlights.

I think your colour scheme will probably work! 👍
However, personally (and I think UNIBROWshapist as well) I was only looking for the horse robe colour scheme, not the one of the horseman for which I already decided to apply something blueish more consistent with rest of my army  :)

I know it’s not too original, but I love the glowy green of these hexwraith drapes from the tome. Unfortunately I’m a terrible painter and don’t know what I’m doing.

Anyone know what the paint guide would be to get that glowing green that’s on the hexwraith drapes (possibly the same as the harrow’s stead)?

    Hello,
I have been looking for the same thing!
I believe this is the same or derived colour scheme as the one used for the photo in AoS Grand Alliance Death book.
I have not found it documented anywhere and I have tried to approach as close as I could to this colour, using:

    1. Basecoat Corax white
    2. Mix of Hexwraith Flame + Nihilak Oxyde + Lahmian
    3. Drybrushing in Ulthuan Grey
    4. Layer in Ulthuan Grey

Here below my WIP attempt.. 🙂

I'd like to hear what others have been using them for. Got them nice and painted up, but frankly I just bring them for that reason until I have more painted of my army...

I wanted to use 2 Morghast Archai in a Legion of Grief 1k points army against Skavens, in order to hide 4 Tomb Banshees behind (the Ghostly Howl at 10" does not require visibility) and for delivering the -1 Bravery within 6". And also just for the point of putting something on the table as tall as the Stormefiends :D However the Morghasts float in the air, so I am not sure they would hide anything :D I guess I am authorised to glue them on some mausoleums like in  @Rob Hawkins' tutorial? 🤗

...but the -1 Bravery debuff could be brought by several other cheaper units (zombies, skeletons, black knights, ), and then their 210 points is also the same price as for 6 Chainghasts who would also: have 12 wounds in total, fly (but only 6" move), save at 4+ (even ethereal), shred things in same way at 2" in melee if 5 targets within 2", plus would create a range 'threat' at 15" and be healed by grave sites.

I agree with you: I am first interesting in painting them because I like their style and their lore.

I would not encourage GW to drop them in points (they deserve a key role) but rather to align them in term of profile with other models with the "Deathlords" keyword. They are the only ones non-leader models, sitting (floating?) beside not less than Nagash and 4 Mortarchs. For example, role-wise,

    • their "spirit" weapons could feast on their victims' souls and heal them on killing something,
    • maybe they could also have abilities triggered when in range of Deathlord heroes (encouraging playing them with the Mortarchs) maybe something the same way as a Nighthaunt General can now re-allocate wounds to Hexwraiths with the Dolorous Guard battalion,
    • maybe they could have the ability to "stay in the sky", threatening the battlefield, until they decide to rush on their prey or to lift it in the air,
    • etc...

    Hi All,

I am starting my first death army this year and it is a heavily narrative army, basically the army that fights the final battle in the novel The Undying King by Josh Reynolds. Once finished I want to expand into a Soulblight army as I love the Neferata model and the vampire vibe.

I'm looking for any information/lore about Neferata and the Soulblight Curse, be it from The World That Was, Age of Myth, Age of Chaos, Age of Sigmar or Soul Wars. Looking for websites, novels, novellas, anything that may be of interest. I've looked at a couple of websites already and found differences in the inforamtion that they give, hence my call to the ones who will probably know, you lovely people.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I share your interest and I have read so far:

    1) https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/rise-of-nagash-ebook.html

    2) https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/neferata-ebook.html

First one is big, it covers entire Nagash ascension, so far more than just Neferata but it include many many chapters about Neferata story in Lahmia.

If you are interested in understanding her personality and how she became what she is then you will probably like it as well  :)

Simple, Legion of Grief has no ally choices and can't be allied by anyone.

    ...aaah thank you!

So, we are not even authorised to ally the factions part of our own allegiance.

So many reasons to grief! Now I understand the name 😅

  11. Based on "Core rules' Designer's Commentary" from July 2019, Page 9:

    Quote

Q: The rules say that a warscroll battalion can include allies and that they don’t count against the number of allies in the army. Does this rule only apply to battalions that share the same allegiance as the army, but that have units from two different factions (a battalion in a Daughters of Khaine army that has Daughters of Khaine and Stormcast Eternals units, for example)? A: Yes. The faction a warscroll battalion belongs to is shown on its warscroll, above the title of the battalion. In addition, the battalion is assumed to belong to the Grand Alliance that its faction is a part of. Warscroll battalions that share the same allegiance as an army can always be taken as part of the army, and if they include any allied units, these units do not count against the limits on the number of allies the army can have (or against the points limit that can be spent on allies in a Pitched Battle). An army can include a warscroll battalion of a different allegiance to the rest of the army, but if it does so the units in it do count against the limits on the number of allies the army can have (and the points for the battalion and the units in it count against the points limit that can be spent on allies in a Pitched Battle).

What would prevent a 2000 points Legion of Grief army to escort its Lady Olynder general with:

    - one "Nighthaunt Warscroll Battalion - The Dolorous Guard" (120 points)

    - the 2 required associated units of 5 Hexwraiths (2*140=280)

= ...for a total of 400 Ally points?

Would it be legit and would this army get as well 1 extra CP + 1 extra artifact?

If yes then: new NH battalions, despite being not in Legion of Grief, would still offer an interesting way of shielding Lady Olynder and exploiting more her potential?

  12. Thank you for the topic! I love anything about Morghasts (the model design, the rules, the lore). I had been trying to build a 1k Legion of Grief list to play against a 1k Skaven list of 6 Stormfiends + 1 Warlock Bombardier + 1 Doomwheel + 1 Warp ligthning Cannon. After several attempts looking at a mix of Banshees, Chainrasp, Wolves, Spirit Hosts.... I wonder if maybe Lady Olynder + 6 Morghasts bodyguards and 2 battlelines could work as well. At last it would look cool :D

    ...what about the colours? 😊

    A) Traditional: Bones & Soul with Shyish-purple armors (following Arkhan/Nagash style).

    B) or something different, maybe more gothic/dark (...but now I realised maybe too much close to Necrons....)

    See some WIP attached.

  13. Maybe we could have a unnamed Dread Abyssal warscroll (i.e. without Arkhan)?

Just like the Flesh Eaters have Terrorgheist and Zombie Dragon warscroll in addition to the versions mounted by the hero. They could fit Behemot role as well. It would be nice for those who have magnetised their Mortarchs :D

We already know three named Dread Abyssals but it is assumed that there could have existed hundreds or thousands: https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Dread_Abyssals

    4. Pick up 2x5 dire wolves.  Dire Wolves saw a points increase recently, but they're still a great option for filling battle line requirements, grabbing unoccupied objectives, harrassing small enemy units, screening your faster moving units and heroes from charges, etc.  Some people even take them in big units, buff them up, and use them as a primary horde unit.  I'm not much for that, but point is you want at least 10 and may want more.  The official models conveniently come in a box of 10 for an affordable price:

    [picture]

But a lot of players don't like how they look, and their connection to their bases is both obnoxiously large and surprisingly fragile, so you might want to consider alternative models.  Fenrisian Wolves are a decent alternative:

😇👍 ...my own interpretation of Fenrisian Wolves as Dire Wolves battle lines in a Legion of Grief army:

The one in the front has his legs at an awkwardly unbalanced position, both looking forwards, counteracting the general impression of speed and flight it wants to present, and you may say "well, sir, it's because he's landing!", then the wings are not positioned in a way that gives off that impression, neither are the arms.

While I do not share the conclusion I thank you for the detailed and justified explanation. It shows that you have already invested a decent time into looking at these models :)  If you wish to spend more, and to give a try at building one of them, then I would just say that the joints for gluing these legs you don't like are actually flexible for allowing you to adjust their pose. You do not have to glue them in a pose where they look like landing: you can just glue the legs more like sliding to the rear. And same for the heads: you can orient them the way you want (e.g. if you want to make them look like a Velociraptor trying to capt sounds :D)

For the wings I agree with you: the conversion from Rob Hawkins is great, especially with the mausoleum pieces he produces ! 👍

The armours and weapons are really Morghast-style and I like it because they are the very first models which attracted me while I was passing in front of a GW shop gallery some time ago, and which made me start this hobby :)

So far I understood that we have:

    1. A single same voice speaking over the 3 trailers: a general in life and emperor in death, destroyed and reborn, who survived Storm God's hammer and freed from his prison. This last statement links to the old entity (old ally of Nagash) released from the Midnight Tomb by Lady Olynder?

    2. A Mortarch (of Bones?). But I am not sure if the  previous entity old ally of Nagash is the Mortarch itself, or if a new Mortarch is acting on behalf of the released entity. The main character/general in the 3rd trailer has a shield with a figure which looks a lot like the entity released from Midnight Tomb (mouth wide opened + magic runes). Does it mean that this character with the shield is the Herald of the army, but no necessary the  Mortarch itself (like the Knight of Shrouds was a Herald for the Nighthaunt)?

    3. An ambassador/tithe collector,  a distinct character going from city to city to announce the coming of the army and the collect.

    4. A well organised legion/type of army of bones constructs, marching in with banners, in Asian and Morghast style (no wing but undead mounts) and catapults ...throwing what? (green magic?)

    A: No to all questions."

I would use a dreadblade harrow as general due to his mobility for summoning destroyed units and a teleport with that sweet - 2 bravery

And i dont know about 2 endless spells with only 2 mages, could be hard to get them going properly.

Thank you for the feedback! :)

Ah actually the Crypt Flayers are Mercenaries so it should be ok?

Good idea for the Dreadblade, probably more resistant and mobile, thank you!

  18. Hello all,

Any feedback is welcome about the Legion of Grief army list below :)

    • The main idea is to use several  bravery debuff (natural ones and spells casted by Reikenor) with the Tomb Banshees and Crypt Flayers screams to inflict mortal wounds. Here below I tried to figure out how to deploy the army and made some statistics about how many MW in average could be inflicted, depending on how many of the bravery debuff apply to the target(s). I took an initial bravery of 8 as an average (like SC, not as good as Death,  not as bad as Skaven ^^).
    • Like in other armies, the wolves in pack of 10 should run to objectives.
    • There is no really 'hammer' unit except the 40 Skeleton which also actually play as anvil because they can be healed by gravesites and necro, as well as buffed with a Dance Macabre. If these Skeletons got destroyed they can be called back for 1 CP.
    • If a VIP target get in range then the Skeletons can also be flown over by bigger guys (Morghast & Crypt Flayers) and actually the Morghasts can already hit at 2" through them.
    • Some aspects I am not sure about:
      • Is a Necro a solid general with 5 Wounds and 6+ save only? (can't take Reikenor since then he doesn't get the command trait -2 Bravery).
      • How to boost the Skeleton move (4)? Or is it enough to slowly crawl towards opponent's army as a wall, until the bravery MW dealers get in range?
      • Where to locate the gravesites around the army?

    Needs paint!!!

I personally have reservations about the „mutated“ left hand, but one could make a magical effect out of it... 🤔 paint only half of it in „vampireskin“ and the rest greenish witchfire

By chance do you know any tutorial about making a spell effect with painted cotton? I have seen it used for simulating smoke and now I wonder how it could be used for simulating a small whirling bolt of energy growing in the spellcaster's hand.

I ask this because I am also working on a Vampire Lord conversion and I have also opted for a 'mutated' left arm. I thought that there exist many excellent shield to be used with Vampires but in my mind the Vampire Lord had to be a mix between a fighter (right hand with sword) and caster (throwing magic bolts and raising deads).

    Teaser here below :)

  20. I wonder the same and I have never tested this below. So I just look for ideas as you do. I assume we are all in brainstorming mode here :)

    ---------

    1) Of course,  spells can be unbound, but would Nighthaunt spell "Soul Cage" help? I mean if the 40 plage monks have to be the last ones of their army to fight then it might be that they are no longer 40 when they reach that stage because you would focus your attacks on them before. Ok, now I realize that the army you fight has actually 5 hordes of 40 plague monks >_<

    2) Still in spell area: would Lore of Deathmage spell "Fading Vigour" help? Reducing their number of attacks also reduces their probability to do 6's and to double their damage?

    3) To destroy the hordes... maybe stay with FEC and field an Abhorrant Ghoul King on Royal Terrorgheist with The Grim Garland  artefact and 5 Royal Terrorgheist in a Gristlegore court. (1900pts :D). Your birds will shout at 10" with average rolls of 3.5+6=9.5, against debuffed Plague Monks's bravery of 4 (the artefact doing -2 bravery and his furnaces doing +1),  resulting in 9.5-4=5.5 MW each. With 6 birds: 5.5*6=33 MW. Drrrrracarrrrys? :D Ok, 5 rounds required to wipe 5 hordes while trying to survive... Sounds impossible I admit ^^

    4) I would like to know how are organised the 200 Plague Monks your opponent is playing: 5 Hordes of 40? 10 units of 20? Etc. I think it makes sense to look at this because in one case (5 Hordes of 40) it could be interesting to field several expendable/suicide units with the sole purpose of screening your elite range damage dealers. So one last (expensive) try. Your opponent has a very thematic/roleplay army but seems to abuse a little bit of the hordes to be honest. If they are all painted he probably deserves a medal. But why not looking for another abuse option? If he basically has 5 big blob units in total + 3 heroes then you would need:

    • more and smaller units than what he has, so that:
      •  maximizing his number of attacks is difficult for him
      • loosing one unit in a 1v1 unit fight is not a big loss for you
      • and so that you can still attack with many powerful other units still fresh
    • range units so you can start diminishing his hordes without being in contact with them, playing mouse ("rat", sorry :D) & cat with them.

The Chainghasts are always said to be very average Nighthaunt unit.. and too expensive (both in army Pts and money $_$). But except for the spells and the bravery shrieks of Terrorgheists/Banshees/Flayers, they are the only real range units in Nighthaunt I think. And their melee attacks scales with number of models in 2" range of them (good against hordes no?).

    Let's imagine:

    • 40 Chainghasts doing ~30 range damages after 6+ save, from 12" to any blob approaching, or to any blob they approach.
    • You land a soulsnare endless spell to slow the Plague Monks hordes approaching, and to start eating them slowly.
    • If they come at contact then first you screen your elite range units with expendable/oneshot Chainrasps. Then each Chainghast will probably soon arrive in 2"range of from 5 to 10 Plague Monks. Of course one unit of Chainghast will not survive such an encounter, however:
      • Then it is only one of your 10 units which dies
      • While your opponent spent the attack sequence of one of his 5 blobs (not even maximising the number of attacks because getting in range of 4 Chainghasts with all 40 Monks will be difficult)
      • You would still have 9 units of 4 models left for attacking. One Chainghast in range of a Spirit Torment and in range of one enemy model would do ~0.39 damages after +6 save. But if he is in range of 5 models (more likely with the hordes you fight against) then it will retaliate with ~1.94 damages after save. 36 models would deliver ~70 damages after 6+ save and you would have flexibility to spread these damages adequately. I don't know if people here have experience with Chainghast but is it rare to be in 2" range of 5/10/more models, when you fight against hordes like this?

I believe that because the opponent abuses of the horde bonus/effect (even though as I wrote before, visually, I would probably be in admiration of such a vermintide!) then we also have to abuse of something else. It might be in the fact that such hordes may basically destroy anything they touch, but at the end: they cannot pile in twice. So, great if such horde can wipe out a unit of 4 models in one attack sequence, but then it just crushed a fly with a mallet and your opponent wasted the firepower of 240 pts to kill 160 pts (for 4 Chainghasts) or 80pts (for 10 Chainrasps).

If the 200 monks are in 10 units of 20 then I have no idea yet :D Also I have just figured out the bill for buying such army below... 750 Euros of Chainghast you'd better have to win otherwise this Skaven player will have a good reason to laugh :D Ok I always sounds crazy with my 3 xCoven thrones army ideas, or this new one here below. It is just that: 200 monks is really insane, and wouldn't insane problems deserve insane solutions? :P

  21. Seen through the eyes of the flesh eater courts: a raging battleground is actually a sumptuous dinner with "finest" guests. So I am not upset by the presence of a Throne for the noble host. I just wonder where did they put the dinning table? :D

PS: I have just finished reading recently the first FEC Battle tome. And the lore description and short stories were just as crazy as great. I was not sure at the beginning but then I understood that each description was ironically starting as a normal heroic fantasy scene: like involving a brave knight in golden plate holding a white banner over a battlefield and fighting monsters... and then suddenly along the story you realize we are just seeing it through the eyes of the flesh-eater himself. The poor monster smashed under the "knight's" sword is actually just an innocent fool who failed to run away before the FEC sacked his village :D I hope the incoming battle tome will be written in the same way!
