AoS 2 - Clan Verminus / Skaven Discussion

Hello-hi everyone around here, a friend of mine and me are going to enter Age of Sigmar. We both don't have very much time and decided to start with Skirmish in order to have some nice Minis and something playable quite soon. I already bought some stuff like the Skirimish-Rules, the Path to Glory Book, some Battletome (not Skaven Pestilens yet), but everything only pre 2.0. Now I wonder what I would really need to buy. As far as I can see, the Core Rules are still free, the Warscrolls are also free and online, and we will skip stuff like Battalions and Artifacts for the first Games. So the only thing, that got me wondering wether I need buy Grand Alliance Chaos or the Skaven Pestilens Battletime was the Fact that I had so difficulties to get my hands on the Deathrunner Warscroll and wasn't able to find a Warscroll for the Giant Rats (outside of the Compendium). So my question is: How much does a Skaven Player really need the Grand Alliance Chaos Book and the Skaven Pestilens Battletome in order to start playing (I want to by the Battletome anyway. but would prefer to spend my money on minis fist, hehe)? Thanks-thanks everyone!

AoS 2 - Clan Skyre Discussion

Ah, yeah, of-course-course! 😊 I just finished reading the 7th edition army book and they really mention the backstabbing and megalomania at least twice on every page. And regarding my question: It was quite stupid anyway. I tend to forget how vast the Age of Sigmar setting is and that virtually anything is okay, if you can come up with a plausible or even only entertainung story for it, hehe.

AoS 2 - Clan Skyre Discussion

Thanks a ot @Lord_Skrolk and @michu! I plan on putting him in charge of my small force, that fit's very nicely and leads to the next question: From the 7th Edition Skaven Army Book I know that there has been an hiearchy of warlords within each Skaven Clan. If I am not mistaken the rules of those days didn't reflect that (or at least very well), and currently there's just one "Warlord". But putting one into a force and assuming that he is not a Clan Leader, but somewhere a bit down the hiearchy (like part of a war council) is probably quite okay, isn't it?

AoS 2 - Clan Skyre Discussion

Hey there, just a small question: If I read the Warscroll Builder correctly the Archwarlock is the most expensive "regular" Skaven Hero (meaning it's a "common" Skaven that rose among the Ranks of the Skaven to it's current position – unlinke the Verminlord Daemons – and he doesn't have a powerful companion, like the Screaming Bell or Boneripper). Does that imply that it's currently the most powerfull regular Hero Character? (I'm asking for background story-building reasons, but I try to keep the backstory in line with the rules / crunch …)

AoS 2 - Clan Verminus / Skaven Discussion

I just found out the Skweel Gnawtooth the former Clan Moulder Packmaster Hero has almost the same Backstory as Canis Wolfborn, which … just makes Skaven even more awesome. I was so happy about this coincidence, that I thought, I have to share it with someone, yes-yes. I definitely have to take a closer look into the Space Wolves product range for conversion option, hehe.

Regarding the Stormvermin 30/500 topic from Friday: The new Warscroll-Builder is online and Stormvermin are-cost 30/420 and 40/500 it says …

    Mayple's Skaven Science

Oh-oh, that makes me curious-inquisitive! Do you focus-concentrate on a single realm-thing, or several-many? And if I hadn't mentioned it before: This Blog is the single most inspiring thing I've found about Age of Sigmar and even the whole Hobby. Thanks, thanks, many-many thanks!

    Let´s Talk Skyre

Ah! Thanks a lot! That's great! I will need some Warp-lightning cannon anyway so that's good to know. And I can do better search on ebay, hehe. Thanks again!

    Let´s Talk Skyre

Ah, yeah, googleing … stupid me, I should have thought about that myself, hehe. But thanks! On a different topic: The Skyre Acolytes are not the freshest nor the most beautifull minis, esp. as they come in Units of 5 and there are only three different models. I think about converting some myself (using skaven an mechanicum minis/bits), but I wonder wether there's any source of skaven heads with gas masks / respirators other than the Acolytes (maybe third party bits). Does anyone know some?

Yes, yes, I'll probably end up with those guys … but … there are sooo many other great Skaven Units, so that 400 points of allies seems to small for all the awesome Units, I want to play, hehe.

    Let´s Talk Skyre

Humble greetings everyone! I have a small question: The "Enginecovens" mentioned in the Generals Handbook 2017 … from which Book / Source do they come from? Thanks in advance!

Now that I think about it … I correct my question: Is there any Chaos Battleline Unit that is worth to be prefered over Clanrats within a mostly Skaven (Skyre) Army?

Thanks for the help. I'm especially looking forward to grab anything and go crazy, hehe. I thought about using Chaos Warriors (with a few conversions, maybe), because they are so tanky, and what I've read about the Skaven Units sofar seemed like they could use Tanks …

    Let's chat Skaven tactics

Hi there, I hope, it's okay to resurrect this thread, but if I'm not mistaken, that's kind of the idea of the "Let's Chat"-Threads. I do have a Question regarding Skaven List Building. Restricting to one Clan only seems a bit too boring to me (I don't care too much about competitivness). But if you choose Chaos only as you allegiance, your only Battleline Unit are the Clanrats, and as the profit massively from high Unit numbers, you'll probably end up with 3 x 40 Clanrat Units which is a bit not so tempting. Soo my question: When choosing Mixed Chaos als Allegiance, which Unit outside of the Skavens would be most usefull for a (mostly) mixed Skaven Army? Thanks in advance!

    Why play Wanderers?

First things first: One of the most precious types of threads over there at the Bolter and Chainsword are the "Why play Xyz"-Threads, imho (the "Why play Blood Angels" Thread is pretty epic). Collecting what people love about the faction, how they came to play them is highly motivating. So … I want to start that over here too, and of course I'll start myself. My ten (personal) Reasons for the Wanderers … 1. Beauty. The Minis are the most beautiful. And I don't mean, that they look cool. I also love Duardin, and Grots – they have great, cool Minis too. But the Minis of the Aelves and the Wanderers above all are really a feast for the eyes. They are just plain beautiful. And as I probably will be building and painting a lot of them an will be looking at them quite a while, I thinks it's a good Idea, to choose the most aesthetically appealing Faction, hehe. 2. Nomad rebuilders and humble Sinners. I like the Theme of the new Wanderers. Actually even more than the one of the Wood Elves of the World that was. They are still people of the Wild, but they don't have to be all from the Woods. The Theme of the Wanderers is open to many interpretations of nomads, hermits, aelves, pathfinders, rangers. At the same time, they have a mission: They are Rebuilders. I really, really like that: Connecting ley lines, laying Waystones – that's just a great basic narrative. Plus: I like that they are a kind of humble, repentant sinners, or at least have a kind of burdened legacy with the Sylvaneth and Ghyran. I like broken heroes. That really fit's greatly for me. 3. Shields, Spears, Archers and Cavalry, on Deers. Those are the things I am looking for in an fantasy army, pretty much exactly in that order. It really is the perfect match. 4. Heroines. I like mixed gender Armies. I just don't get, how all those male-only Factions can actually assume to win a war, when they ignore half of their population (except the Orruks and Grots, which are just male looking Fungi, if I am not mistaken). Anyhow: The Wanderers have two all-female signature units and almost all other Minis from the Range (except the Wild Riders) can be genderswapped easily, thanks to the lithe and lissom figure of the Aelves (and the Eternal Guard even have female Torsos, as I recognised to my suprise, when I opend my first box). 5. Floral Patterns and Tatoos. I just love (painting) decorative patterns (on minis), and especially floral or organic patterns. 6. The Name. I especially love the Name "Wanderers", for two reasons. First because it contains a reference to the poem "All that is gold does not glitter" And the second reason is, because it opens the former concept of the Wood Elves to the amazing and ultra-high fantasy setting of Age of Sigmar, it opens the faction to so many ideas and possibilities, on a narrative level. A wanderer is someone, who wanders. That's it. You don't have live in a wood, you don't even have to be an aelf (linguistically). The Wanderers roam through the Eight Realms on hidden paths. That is soo great. And by the way: Theres another faction from the World that was, that has gotten an name, which is hardly more than a verb – The Dispossessed. And that's not the only similarity between the two … just sayin. 7. Mixability with other Aelf and Order Factions. As mentionend befor, the chance to have a faction, that allows me to incorporate protagonists, heroes and units from other aelf and order factions is an opportunity I really like. I already ordered a Skycutter and will definetly add some Longbeards and Ironbreakers with Wanderers-Style. But even only having the whole range of aelves is a great thing, kitbashing-wise. 8. Buildings and Terain. With the current state of the Aelf Factions being quite undefined (from a narrative point of view), it's a great chance to use everything for terrain building that appeals to me. Especiall stuff like the  Elven Tower of Miniature Scenery is a great outlook to what's possible to build. 9. Realm Wanderers and Stalkers of the Hidden Paths. It's just one Trait (or two, depending on how you count), but it sounds like a lot fun. Can't wait to play that for the first time. 10. Legolas and Gimli. The friendship between the Legolas the Wood Elf and Gimli the Dwarf is one of the things I love most about the Lord of the Rings, maybe it's even the thin I love most about the book. It's so unlikely, and on the other hand so wholehearted. Being able to reforge that into an Warhammer Army is beyond great, at least to me … I'm sorry for that wall of text! I wrote most of that stuff down weeks ago, in order to compare different factions. And so I thought, that I could post it anyway. And now, I'm curios: What makes you (want to) play the Wanderers?

Lets Chat Wanderers / Wood Elves compendium

Thanks for the help! I quickly switched from GWs glue to Revells Contacta – which I still know from my childhood, hehe – and imho it's quite thin. Most of the Guards look pretty okay, but the recess on the shoulder appears quite often. I didn't notice it, when buildin the models (kids around the table). I'll keep an eye on them next time. Until then I'll try to fix it with the glue, as you mentioned. Thanks again. And another question immediatelly: Now that they are glued together, I noticed, that the inside of the Shields will be quite hard to paint, especially as the are sooo close to the spears. Has anyone achieved okay result, with glueing the shields first?

Lets Chat Wanderers / Wood Elves compendium

Soo … built my first ten Eternal Guard tonight (while the kids were still awake) and the Nomad Prince. I'm a little afraid that my painting skill will not match the need of the minis, but we'll see that later. For now I do have one question: I struggeled a bit, with the part where the shoulders are glued together. There still is a tiny gap. Does anyone have the same Problem, and if yes: How do you cope with it? Liquid Green Stuff? And as I am already posting: My first (and for a while only) Opponnent will probably starting Sylvaneth, which I like a lot, because it takes away the risk that I start buying them too as Allies for my Wanderers. (Plus: We both like the story of trees that hate elves, uhm aelves). We will start playing Skirmish, as we virtually start with zero. Does anyone have some advice, what's important to know / be aware of when fighting against Sylvaneth with Wanderers?

    Why play Wanderers?

Me neither, until I stumbeld about that one-pager, when I did a Google Image Search for Wanderers. They actually have an intruduction text for every Faction, so I bought the book to get the other little pieces of fluff also. Quite interesting read here and there. I'm also preparing a Post about currently know Wanderers Fluff … maybe I'll get it done tonight, at it really isn't much.

And another Question: Has anyone around here considered, or even tried using the new Blood Bowl Elven Team as a Base for Conversions? I like their dynamic poses a lot, and with a few bits here and there and the right colours, they might make some nice Wanderers …

Sad to hear that they aren't good. But I'll follow your advice and mix them in somehow. I planned on replacing the crew with (bits of) Eternal Guards and/or Wild Riders, but keeping the model otherwise more or less like it is. It fit's so nicely into the story that starts to evolve in my head. By the way: Those Blowpipe Fey Conversions of Tidings, you mentioned … I haven't seen them, aaand couldn't find them, even though I did try some matching keyword searches and stalked Tidings History … do you have any hint, where to find them?!

@Aezeal @WABBIT … thanks for the tips and the advice! Esp. Wabbit. I'm going to follow them wholeheartedly. As we already talked about the Skycutter … this is one of my first Questions: I was a bit suprised that it was not even mentioned in this thread, although it's not Wanderers Allegiance. I know it's pricy, I know it doesn't have Mortal Wound output, but it's damned fast and three of them would fit into the Allies 400 Points Slot and seem like a pretty fair option for objective grabbing to me … or to put it another way: Do I miss some other reasons no Wanderers Player seems to regard a Skycutter as an addition?
  24. Filius

Lets Chat Wanderers / Wood Elves compendium

Yes, yes, the Skycutter is not a Wanderer, and I couldn't believe that, when I found out. I still can't believe it. To me it's a Wanderer. It fits so great to the Warhawk Riders of old, and the whole wandering theme. Did I mention that I am also tempted to get me one of those cute Magmadroths (and paint it green)? (Just to get that out of the way, too.) And yes, I do like winning also. But I really dislike winning easy. In fact I really prefer a game, where it's easier for my opponent to win. Many dislike loosing a lot (including my wife) and some of my regular partners in "normal" board games), but I am totally happy, if I could play along my own plan and then loos. And a game is more fun for me, when my opponent has a lot of fun. That actually makes a faction more attractive to me, that is easy to loose with and takes skill and experience to win with. Plus: My experience from 40k is that the community of players of an underdog factions is … more cosy. But really: The playablity is nearly the last important factor for me, when deciding for a faction. I'll spend much, much, much more time building, kit-bashing and painting, than playing. At least the next years.
