  1. It is, in the sense that it's a continuation of the plot - the overall plot-line and character development moves forward with this one, it's not a side-story, like "The Tainted Axe". But it's also not, in the sense that only two of the characters show up, and it's fairly self-contained. Due to my schedule, I won't be able to write the second novel until late next year at earliest, unless I manage to juggle some stuff around. But, rather than let the series lie fallow, the current plan is to fill the gap - and move the plot forward, if only in small, incremental ways - with short stories and audios, like this one. Basically, it's the MCU Avengers plan - a few stories with individuals, or duos, then everybody together for one big adventure, then some more individual stories, then another big story, repeat as necessary. This is partly due to the fact that we're not sure yet whether the series is finite (i.e. three books and done), with potential spin-offs, or whether it's going to be an ongoing (i.e. Gaunt's Ghosts). A lot of that is down to sales, but some of it just depends on scheduling.

  3. Hey guys new aos player, but long term follower of the horned rat. Just come back from the blockout event in cardiff today for my first proper aos tournament and one thing that struck me as odd was that there were nearly 100 gamers in attendance and i was the only person i could see that had any skaven at all. Are we just biding our time? As I finished fairly well and seems that the army is really underrated, any reasons or thoughts on this? may do a quick break down of my games at the event and review if people are interested as well

  5. I use Swifthawk Agent Reavers as my generic battleline. Min unit size of 5 that costs less than glade riders (granted 3 less models though), can shoot 3 times, then also run after shooting. Plus you can use the old glade rider models to represent them.

  7. In general wizards have seen a price increase due to being designed in tandem with malign sorcery and realm spells, having access to a plethora of spells and dispell definitely warrants af higher cost. I’m attending war fest Europe and we’ve been issued a notice that realmscape features and realm spells (including malign sorcery) will be in play as suggested by the developers. On a side note Playing with all the optional rules adds a framework for army building that rewards versatility, and punishes “one trick” or spam lists, whilst supplying your games with more variety. I’m definitely a fan. On first glance it seems horrible to apply these random effects to our neatly organized 2k frame, some of the effects completely shut down shooting lists. (Ulgu restrictions to 6inches ) assuming you randomize your realm and realmscape features you still only end up with a 1 in 48 chance of the game punishing you severely. Most of the other effects have a medium impact in the game mostly in a cool or interesting way. Versatility is the strength of the Stormcast. And playing with realms and all the optional rules will benefit our play style.

  8. It may sound weird to say it, but I almost like losing more. I won against the Idoneth deepkin player tabling him by turn 3. I learned a minimal amount. I learned Crimson Rain is pretty nice, Murderlust can be clutch and so the the fight in the hero phase, and that Wrathmongers aren’t garbage. (They single handedly took out 6 eel riders and then when 2 died against a pack of Lamarti Reavers his General was within 2” and made him kill him self lmao). However with every loss I then start to entirely rethink strategies and come up with weird ways to win: such as the fighting fire with Fire strategy. The whole Blood Sacrifice / Resanguination thing I’m not sure has ever been done before, using his HP as a resource and making his stronger, then healing him to keep him around longer. I feel like 99% of players default to Killing Frenzy or Bronzed Flesh And never think about the other blessings. I guess I play Wargames to see if I can come up with viable underdog strategies or think outside the box (like Bloodsecrator-less Khorne and the SKARBRAND thing) even if it turns into big monster smash time. I enjoy teasing out strategies and going back to the drawing board and trying to overcome an army I can’t seem to beat... I guess I like winning after adaptation than just easy free wins against bad armies if that makes sense? So I always feel like I learn way more from losing. But yes - fighting Death so far has been extremely frustrating and aneurism inducing. Speaking of Alternative Underdog strategies: I’ve been thinking about how to get guaranteed first time charges if we go first with The Goretide. Once again Blood Sacrifice, this time on all 3 Slaughterpriests. Depending on deployment it will be easier or harder to pull this off. Basically bring a block of 20+ Bloodreavers and they are fuel, get 3 hopefully BT points. Hopefully the Blood Bind goes off. Now a unit is out of position. If it’s within a reasonable distance 8 or less I suppose, burn the 3 BT points and murderlust in the Lord. Also everyone can move D6 inches in the hero phase and the MLOK can pile in 8”. If your hero is within 3” of the enemy any units within 12” can charge in the hero phase and make 1 attack. It’s probably really gimmicky but if you can pull it off it would be an amazing start to a game. I’ve also been looking at ways to get as many attacks and improve his +hit and wound as possible to get as many chances at the 5+ delete possible. So far I’ve got “disciple of khorne” command trait (+1 attack), Aspiring Deathbringer, and Bloodsecrator, then the Ghyrstrike for +1/+1. Thoughts or opinions? I’m always eager to try out my weird ideas and see if they can actually win. If I can get enough games in, like 10 or 15 see how many times it can work over time to see if it’s reliable.

  10. My daughter decided she wanted to paint this summer, but I couldn’t convince her to go with AoS. After looking through the 40k rulebook, she decided she wanted to paint “the pretty lady” (Ynarri). I had a squad of Harlequins sitting in my cabinet from a trade a while ago, so I stripped them and she started the base coats. She’s going with Black for the main color, with Baharoth Blue and Dechala Lilac quarters, and pink scarves and hair. Ought to be good. I’ll probably start her on Kill Team.

  12. What does everyone think about Nighthaunt Gloom for the trees. It’s pretty heavy straight from the pot, but maybe thinned with Lahmia Medium? Although, I’m thinking more of a dead tree look. Dryad Bark, then drybrushed with some greys? I finished a unit of Castigators and started another unit of Sequitors. Although, I’m going to need to take a break to finish my kill team terrain and Drukharii squad for Friday.

  13. It’s going to look like I have way too much time on my hands, but it’s because I am a teacher. So, summer time has also become project time. Originally, I was going to build and paint a Dark Eldar army. However, a friend really wanted one of my armies and traded me a couple of Knight Renegade boxes. Then AoS 2 came out. I was going to do the Nighthaunts and started planning a table to match them. I picked up a nice death game mat from 2plus tough (https://twoplustough.com/collections/frontpage/products/deadlands-game-mat) and have been slowly working on terrain. Now I’m stuck. I want to add some woods, but I’m not sure how to paint them. The terrain is primed Stormvermin Fur, then I airbrushed Stegadon Scale in the recesses, cracks, and crevices. I washed the whole thing Nuln Oil. Finally I dry brushed with Dawnstone, Administratum Grey, and some light Ulthuan Grey in some areas. The archway had Incubi Darkness airbrushed on the front details before drybrushing. This is how I will do the bases of the woods, but I don’t know how I want to do the trees. I don’t want a stark white, but I don’t think browns will work either. Any thoughts?

  14. My daughter had a friend over, my son was being a mopey teenager in his room, and my wife didn’t have any chores for me, so I finished a squad. I used a purity seal to cover the primes bad shoulder pad. Please let em know if you have any suggestions or ideas before I continue. I’m not sure about the vials. I think I may go back and hit them with Stormhost Silver and then use the blue soul stone technical.

  16. Looks good! I tried something very similar with my idoneth deepkin, making the armour dark and cool colours, but the skin and ornaments warm colours, so far it has been working out. Still have a long way to go before I can consider myself a good painter. I think for the khorne warband I'll just give them glowing weapons. I've had success doing that with the orc warband, in fact, painted those orcs in a few hours as well. I guess I'll give the edges a blue glow or something sometime soon! Orc warband:

  18. I see the downside of not having the Engineer Keyword on most of the Ironweld artillery. Correct me if I am wrong though, but the Celestar Ballista and the Steam Tank do not benefit from the Keyword 'Engineer' at all correct? It is mainly Ironweld stuff that can reroll certain dice when baby sat by an engineer, and worse yet they almost all are within 1" of the artillery piece. That means one engineer can potentially camp on two artillery cannons each, requiring two gunmasters for instance to sit between four cannons as example. Lord-Ordinator can stand in the general area of your artillery to give out a +1 to hit universally to Celestars, Cannons, and Steam Tanks to boot. Hitting on a 3+ and rerolling 4+ are pretty close to the same effect, two Gunmasters run us 160 points, 20 points more than one Ordinator, although I will admit and point out that the Gunmasters have long rifles to help with the battle. Lord-Ordinator only gets into the fight if the enemy is on top of your artillery. The way I see it, I want both engineers and Lord-Ordinator. Celestar Ballista hitting on 2+ at long range, and cannons hitting on re-rolled 3+ is extremely good it seems. Feedback on this idea is wanted. GREYWATER FASTNESS Lord-Ordinator - Grand Hammer Gunmaster - Long Rifle Spellweaver Freeguild Militia x10 Freeguild Handgunners x30 Dwarf Warriors x10 Dwarf Warriors x10 Celestar Ballista x2 Cannons x2 Steam Tank Sisters of the Watch x10 Freeguild Greatswords x10 1960/2000 Points Several of the units in this army are for flavor or because I already own the models. Greatswords, Militia, and Handgunners are models I own for a 1k army, so that is why they are included. Militia also have more guns while also being melee chaff. Dwarf warriors are cheap battle line that ca also play picket fence between my arty and sharp sticks. Handgunners are the bulk of my infantry, but in a pinch are also cushion for the artillery section. Steam Tank because Steam Tank. Spellweaver is a wizard for magical defense and also has a once per game auto-unbind to save my bacon from comets and the like. As a bonus she can revive the Sisters of the Watch if they are not wiped out. Sisters of the Watch can be witheringly good if they don't move and no one shoots them back, plus they can stand just behind the meat shields and get to shoot during the charge phase if anyone is foolish enough to multicharge into them. The downside is obviously objective scoring, but I mainly plan on using this as a castle force with smaller chaff units grabbing objectives and also slowing down enemy advance. Dwarf warriors, militia, greatswords, and steam tank can move up to contest in the mid field if the enemy doesn't have deep-strike shinanigans, and the ranged elements should be able to offer support where needed to make the 10 man units able to win or contest side objectives. I will be unlikely to ever hold any objectives in the enemy deployment zone.

  19. That's a clever way of going about it. Especially if there is uncertainty around how big the series will end up being. A safe option that adds to the whole rather than taking away from it Really looking forward to this, and future installments

  20. Yday played two games against mixed bag night haunt, I'll post up my thoughts later. Couldn't help but chime in with the nagash talk, he's easily one of the most powerful models in the game and it is aneurism inducing to play against. From playing against him I would say his only main weakness is points. If you fight him you know you'll be fighting a lot less other troops-this is somewhat mitigated by abilities which buff the whole undead army. My main tactic I would use against him would be to ignore him, the only units which can take him out are MLOK, Wrathmongers and skarbrand*. I would use Wrath mongers as a suicide run on nagash but for the most part ignore him and focus on the objectives and destroying the other undead units. * I had thought about 'fire against fire' strategy @Ravinsild mentioned but it's not worth it. Nagash is a huge investment but can be offensive, defensive and a support piece for an entire army. Skarbrand is just a one dimensional investment. Also 'big model smash durr' is not why I play wargames. Furthermore @Ravinsild if I was in your position I would've had a game against the idoneth player and left the others to their game. AoS is still in its infancy, points and factions are still very volatile, while this is the case you'll still get chumps taking smash armies. If you really want to get good have a look at who is coming top with what armies in the UK scene and start swatting up on YouTube/twitch streams just bear in mind you'll loose a lot while learning.

  21. We can also add that the castigator are more manoeuvrable (don't loose a third of their firepower when they move) and are more efficients against nighthaunts and more importantly, demon, who are more common than people would think. And, surprinsigly, with 2 attacks 4+/4+ each, they can actually kill one-two guys in melee
    1 point
  22. Yes and no. A bunch of raptors can do as much or more damage than soulstrike, but soulstrike has a much higher model count and is more effective in melee. Failing your initial strike will have fewer consequences in soulstrike than with a bunch of raptors.
    1 point
  23. Against 4+ save models, 6 Castigators (160 points) with Soulstrike bonus shot should do 4,62 wounds. 3 Hurricane Raptors should do 3,75 against the same target. Obviously, against less armored targets the Raptors start to get better. But against moderately tough targets, the Castigators deal more damage. Not only that, but they have twice the wounds .

  24. Having faced not one, but two Nurgle players in a recent tournament, it can be a tough match up for DoK. They were both using the Plaguecyst battalion which gives all their Blightkings -1 rend. While I did take some losses and fail to score ANY kill points against either player, I put my speed and positioning and magic potential to my advantage and managed to get a major victory and tie against both players respectively. Sure Death and Nurgle are annoyingly durable, but if you can out play your opponent and play the senario, their durability may not matter as much. Still were annoying to face though. The one and only time I used Pit of Shades and I did 5 mortal wounds to a Blightkings unit due to their low movement.

  25. To provide the perspective of this same conversation that just happened in the Khorne thread (albeit in regards to Nighthaunts), the philosophy is Death by a Million cuts. When faced with tough units that regenerate, ignore rend and just seem to absorb damage all around, the best philosophy is to hit them as much as possible. Not just with units that have boosted attack profiles, but also trying to hit out of phase. Simple things like Temple Nest's MW on an opponents hit roll of 1, Slaughter Queen's Orgy of Slaughter, Morathi's Worship Through Bloodshed, etc. If the problem is durability, then maybe seek out allying some units in. I was planning on eventually getting Order Serpentis and Idoneth Deepkin units which seem to bring longevity. As my experience is mostly with Khorne, realize that my opinion is flawed. But I'm used to paper-thin heavy hitters like Bloodreavers and Bloodletters that have been supercharged into blender mode while being backed up by tankier infantry. DoK at least have mobility, range and magic that they can tap to find ways around their shortcomings, but allies can offer tough stand alone units to help you. Ishlaen Guard, War Hydra's, Drakespawn Knights and a Dreadlord on Black Dragon seem to be good friends in this regard.

  26. They are that good. Their offensive efficiency is very high and they aren't bad on defensive efficiency either (particularly against rend). They have good move and fly as well -- just a great all around unit.

  30. Chariots and female fyreslayers would be awesome. GW lore on female dwarfs always alternated between good (they dont have beards, which was always an annoying trope IMO. Funny when Prachett did it, terrible everywhere else) and bad (only 1 in 10 dwarfs are women; aka this species should have died out literally the first time it fought a war). We know women take a pretty big role in Fyreslayer culture (the head of the Miners Fellowship in, i.e. one of the most important positions in a society that lives underground, was a woman in one of the short stories, and its not portrayed as abnormal) so having them as warriors would be cool. Plus barbarian dwarf warrior women with golden runes in their skin and gigantic ginger mohawks sounds so deliciously 80s.

  32. I'll be bringing the boys to NOVA for both the GT and the doubles tournament. We'll see how we end up. And to add more Dwarven fun to the mix, my partner for the doubles tournament is a Fireslayer. We'll see what happens! I have my 2k list ready for the most part, just working on the 1k list. I'm slightly more nervous on the 1k simply because of the realm rules being used in the doubles tournament severely hurts KO in terms of range. I think 1 round is 18" range max on all weapons and magic, and another round is 12" max because of Ulgu's realmscape rules. My plan is to go heavy bubble boy for that one.

  33. The one Kharadron book (something something Iron Dragon) mentions the position of an "Logistor". Its basically, as the name suggests, a logistics officer. Maybe he could be similar to the Death Guards Tallyman in 40K. Im not sure what abilities such a figure could have. Maybe he could return slain units as reinforcements like the Hammers of Sigmar stormhost? (which would also allow KO access to "summoning") Or something like this: Sale on bullets " In the last Sky-Port, the Logistor managed to get a very special deal. Two death enemies for the price of one, the sales-duardin claimed." A unit wholly within 6" of this model may make an additional attack whenever they roll a unmodified 6 when making a to-hit roll in the shooting phase. (or something like that)

  34. I’d love to see some sort of Surgeon type character. We don’t have much call for healers but it would be fluffy. Especially one carrying an aethermatic saw and some sort of aetheric Violet Ray. A secondary officer, possibly a Grundstok Officer, would be great. But I’d be just happy with our units being tweaked to perform better.

  35. Melee boarding troops, a buffing ship of some sort, a cheaper transport, and a dedicated combat craft that is all guns no transport. Also the elite version of melee only troops. Finally more of a wish list than a need but a Barak-Mhornar hero. Also I would love to see a "Lieutenant" pronounced left tenant who is the admirals right hand man and much more customization than the current admiral. Also we have drill bill we need a mechno monkey. I loosely theme this as the pirates and reavers port theme. I could see a mad scientist and science run amok update as the next one with a focus on bioshock as the big theme with big dadi dawi, flying submersibles that can go into extremely dangerous magic areas as well as underwater, and some sort of dawi super soldier made with aether gold.

  36. She's faster than most units in the game, granting her rerolls to hits and wounds. Her movement debuff can force your opponent to run in turns they may not want to. She's small, allowing her to be hidden. She's worth 4 depravity. a 4+ save, something rare in the army. Can easily hide in a squad of daemonettes to give them locus ability. Great if you are fighting a melee army.

  37. I think Nagash is a really good match up. Maybe Seraphon post FAQ. But for friendly play, that isn't really the issue unless your local group is all hard-core all the time. There are plenty of ways to make KO lists that fit into a casual environment without getting steamrolled.

  38. That’s true, but my biggest annoyance with playing against flying units. Is them moving over my frontlines. It will be a lot easier to block out zones against half movement flyers. and on the arkanauts I learned that the hard way when a mate played them against my daughters of Khaine. One whole unit of witches just disappeared ?
    1 point
  39. Yeah Arkanaut pistols are very under-rated, i find they can be very effective. A unit of 30 will have 20 weilding pistols plus their captains, potentially 43 shots, 64 if you khemist buff. Weight of dice can do a lot of damage if they can survive to do it. Not convinced by the Navigator though. Any flying enemy beginning their move within 18" means they are already on me, most flying units are 12-18" movement so even half that they are already an easy charge away, especially as the navigator will typically be behind your own units making charges even shorter.

  48. Nice work! I'd really like to see GW redo the free cities for AoS2 because it's such a cool concept. They just had a clip on the livestream showing the firestorm ones and a load of other newer ones. How about a free PDF with new rules for all the free cities, to boost all the Order mini factions when you put them together into one themed army? Make it clear you can use them in matched play but only on top of Order allegiance. For each one I'd love to see something like: PHOENICIUM: A army with the Phoenicium allegiance may be composed of units with the following keywords: Phoenix Temple, Stormcast, Free Peoples, Dispossessed, Sylvaneth, Wanderers, Wood Elves, Highborn, Swifthawk Agents. - Phoenix Guard units count as battleline. - Add 1 to the 'Phoenix Reborn' roll for each Flamespyre Phoenix in the army. - No Defeat Unanswered: Each time a unit from this army is slain in combat, all other units reroll 1s to hit and wound in combat until the end of that battleround. - Priests know the blessing Golden Mist: On a roll of 4+ all friendly units within 18" are -1 to hit with shooting. - The Realm of Battle Allegiance must be Ghyran.
