Soul's Slow intro plog: 31/08/17 - Back again!

Recommended Posts

Hey there all. Thought I'd start off by saying that painting time comes and goes so it might be sporadic, but I've decided that the best way to kickstart myself from a dry-spell of painting is to not go back to Nurgle's rank and file and bore myself straight back out of the habit, but instead to paint something really shiny. So, as I intend to hit ironjawz and associated destruction forces hard post-nurgle, here is my first orruk in a while.

I bought the FW orc bosses a few years ago now but only did a few parts of the Warboss, and never tackled the banner bearer. As the warboss' painted parts are awaiting stripping, it was an easy choice as to what to go for. I recently purchased a whole load of new paints, as I've been scrimping since forever and have grown tired of reconstituting paints that really just want to retire (You can even see some original flip tops in the photo! ¬¬). Also, I find citadel's new range recipe to be so much better for some reason.

Unfortunately light has faded for today and I don't like painting under unnatural lighting, so all he has is a base layer of Waaagh Flesh, a wash of green, and then a layer of Warboss Green. The chainmail has also been given a drybrush of warplock, then leadbelcher, and a wash of agrax earthshade. The picture makes it look a lot brighter than it actually is, when it gets a bit more further along I'll break out my friend's fancypants camera and lightbox.

Also attached is the last orc I painted about a year ago, making the most of what I had. He's a lovely old mini I re-purposed for an as of yet still in-progress orc mordheim gang. They might be done by the time it's re-released from GW's new specialist team. I felt the sword was a bit too 80s and not brutish enough, so it was replaced by a spare from the blorc set. Really not a fan of the emerald-green looking flesh, but still, I feel like I can do better now so looking forward to cracking on and then diving into some Ironjaw Brutes! Also gotta get these guys based, 32mm or 40mm?

An actual update with much more impressive photographs and painting (I hope!). So I put in another couple of hours and the skin is now finished, including a glazed lip thanks to you guys on the destruction sub-forum. Also finished the leather straps (Have cleaned up the left under-arm strap since posting, that red's a bit too wide), so I will be tackling the armour next. Chainmail is also done, I added some Typhus Corrosion in the spots where it's torn and damaged and his skin is showing through, and then gave it a light drybrush with orange, just to show taking care of it isn't really in his ballpark. I do still need to do the lining of the mail shirt, probably a dark grey. The face will pop a lot more I reckon with the eyes and teef done.

I have attempted Mitzy's method of stippling on his right shoulder plate and elbow pad, but I don't think it is working out (maybe not a good plan to use GW stipple brush - too coarse?). So I have another idea, to use Warplock, wash with Agrax and Biel-tan, then edge highlight/scratch with Runefang. That's sort of what I did with the old orc model above, though that is a leadbelcher base which may be why it took so many coats.

Comments always welcome, hope you like!

Also mods, if you feel like this should actually be in the painting and modelling section, feel free to move it :)

Great job so far on this Orruk, it's such a cool model, I can't wait to see the banner!  The black armour probably won't look quite right until more of the other colours around it are painted.

@Dez Thanks! The chainmail was a pretty simple task,  and I think will make a nice background area to the brighter colours.

@cb_rex I agree :D For the banner I am thinking either White/Gray to match the mawkrusha GW does, or red scale with pale on most the banner itself. Both I will probably do some freehand on, but I need to consider the tribe some more to see if I can think up a cool name and logo. Any ideas appreciated! Also I have since translated this all onto a blog. Always open to comments and messages :)

Now to go and fix the two slight mistakes I've caught in the photos, and blend his belly skin a bit better.

Decided to put this here as it didn't feel worthy of a blog post, as I don't have much to say, but wanted to show you guys the finished skin on my WiP weirdnob shaman. Really pleased with it, even if it will mostly be hidden by the cloak. Looking forward to more skin on muscular ironjawz and bonesplitterz.

C&C welcome, enjoy.

It might not be the most satisfyingly fast blog ever, but did some more work. His lower tunic/skirt is now finished, as are the fang shaped things on his belt. I saw these as being some kind of ritualistic implements or simply some gubbinz the shaman feels are importantly linked to gorkamorka. two red in the fron and back reminded me of fangs, thus the symmetry. He also has one in stone, one in rusty iron, and one in bronze. Not too sure on the stone yet, but we shall see.

Here once again is my slow contribution! Couldn't get any progress done at the weekend as I went to see some pro counter strike, but otherwise the main body is finished, so it's time for the staff, cloak and gubbinz! The bottom of the staff would be hard to paint attached due to the robe, so I am doing that then gluing it on to finish painting the head of it. Also the sword needs some more blending work.

Once again, a partial slow update. Staff is done finally and attached, so by tomorrow he should be finished. The magic smoke effect I wanted to look like the magic in total war, so it goes from a very yellow green to an emerald green. Enjoy. a25febe7ef71d3dd00714579d7a9ec13.jpg

Looking great. I like your skin (that doesn't sound creepy... at all).

It puts da lotion on its skin or else it get a da krumpin again.

Thanks! It's actually relatively simple ? I have some savage boar boys to do down the road, looking forward to it since the skin is satisfying when finished.

Thanks a lot! I wrote up some backstory for the tribe on my blog post, and also put better lit pictures in the gallery. Now I need to finish my banner bearer. After that, I may have to order some brutes! I also have some assembled and mostly unpainted black orcs and savage boar boyz from when those plastics were new, and skull pass moonclan grots. And somewhere are two gargants too. Realistically I have a lot to be getting on with!

That red detailing is well done, looks great!

Cheers, actually was a lot of fun and not too hard, following the advice from the how to paint brutes video of making the base and ends dots and joining them up. Just made sure to keep it looking natural in the cloak folds.

Not done too much today, so no pictures, but I airbrushed the basecoat and first layer on the skin of the banner bearers flag.

Thanks a lot! And generally thanks to everyone, it means a lot. I have a habit of losing drive, especially when so many people **** on your game.

I know it's not much of an update, but painting has begun on the month 1 tale bunch. Boar boyz skin basecoated today, spent most the time gap filling. To this end the shamans cloak needs some repainting but the flames are mostly intact.3c811887c8717c0372e8e1de3814a6d7.jpg

Greenskin Boarboys have to be my favorite AoS models. And one of my favorite units. Excited to see how you paint them.

@mrstimpson38 Well i hope I won't leave you waiting too long! I blasted through the skin today by removing some of my steps, and drybrushing the main layer. All the skin done on five of them compared to 1 mini taking half a week is an improvement. They aren't as blended, but I am going to just glaze them on the harshest highlights to mix it in better. Sorry for ****** lighting, didn't think to photograph them when I finished and it was still light.
