Mixed-colour Stormcast armies?

Hi guys,

i have some SCE I painted in the traditional gold and blue when they were first released. However, now I want to paint some of the new stuff and am thinking I'd like to try some other colours. I also feel like a full army of gold could end up bland looking on the table (too monochromatic).

Im curious if anyone has painted their's with a mix of colour schemes or even different tones of gold and if you were happy with the overall results (photos would be a great bonus!). Or if not, just thoughts on if this would be a good approach or just look like a hodgepodge.

Im thinking of it. I think Ill avoid the hodgepodge by breaking up into, well sort of chambers but more theme.

So when I get the vanguard theyll get a colour.

I haven't painted many prosecutors and Ive bought 6 so Im thinking of colour for flyers (I do have a gold venator but he is a hero and 3 starter set prosecutors but they are bad quality)

I think it could be a lot like space marine chapters, different companies are different colours (so long as they are complementary).

My battleline troops and some heroes are silver and red. Other units are gold and red, so my basic colour is red, but metallics are mixed (sometimes they're mixed: gold-silver-red).

I painted them like this because they look... more interesting stand, well, it's so so boring to paint 100 pure golden boys. :D

I wanted to paint my army in different colors, coded to the first book. So it would have been: Hammers of Sigmar, Hallowed Knights and Celestial Vindicators. But once I got through painting the Goretide I ended up painting them in my own color combination.

If you're going to paint some Vanguard models I think that's a great excuse to try a different color scheme.

I say go for it.

What I would do is make sure that whatever units you paint in a new scheme, paint a Hero to match that scheme.  Not for any rules purpose - but just so you can look at your opponent and say, "yeah, this Tempest Lords Knight Venator brought these 2 units from his chamber to help the Hammers or Sigmar."

Also base them the same to they tie in.

Boom.  You just built the start of a Narrative.  Now you get to tell the stories of that combined host.

This works for other factions, too.  I'm working on a mixed Order force for a team event right now.  I jave Stormcast, Freeguild, and Collegiate Arcanum elements in the army.  Each one has its own color scheme.  I figure they may have a common goal,  but it's not like they all would be wearing the same heraldry, being from different factions.

I did base them all the same, so they still have some cohesion.

If, and when, I'm asked - the Wizars from the Collegiate Arcanum hired some Freeguild mercenaries to escort him on some Arcane quest.  As he was travelling, a strike force of Stormcast bolt in because the quest is important enough to have caught the attention of the Celestant - and he wants to make sure it succeeds... and doesn't trust the Freeguild to see it through to the end.

We've got internal conflict (Order may have a common goal, but I don't accept that we're all "let's hug it out and be best friends").  We've got thematic unit choices - foot troops for the Freeguild to represent jist this roving band, and the SCE strike force is based around a Vanguard Wing battalion... something that would be highly mobile and able to adjust to the needs of a Wizard on the move.  If I had the time to paint 1000 pointsof Vanguard, I'd probably do that for even more theme. And we've got a chance to do several color schemes in one army.

What more can you ask of your hobby?

the gold looks beautiful if done just right. glimmering army of solid gold. The gold spray base works great to start out with a solid consistent gold to build upon.

A lot of people like to create their own scheme (like myself). Personally I don't often love the color choices GW makes most of the time. For me it creates a base level to build upon. Their schemes for stormcast are, basic gold and silver, black and white (the most painful colors to paint) and burgundy and teal. I was particularly disappointed in their stormcast concept colors. Astral Templars are these wild fighters protecting the realm of beasts and they are burgandy and gold? They don't look the part of their lore.

GW has specific limitations as well, the stormcast cant be red because they are frequently clashing with Khorne who has a monopoly on red. But an all red stormcast army would look amazing.

Personally I'm mixing and matching between 4 core color concepts. So if you used the standard concept that gives you gold, blue, silver and a little red. You could make a new unit and make their armor color silver or blue for example. They will look totally different but still fit in with the others.
