Question

Do we need to call the spell before using it ?

or is it like charging you roll the dice then decide what you charge. there's nothing in the rules saying you must choose which spell you wish to attempt then roll the dice.

so can i just roll some dice, see what the total is then decide on a spell ?

May not be explicit, but the rules specify "the" casting value of "the" spell.

Also, "to cast a spell, roll two dice" implies you've already picked which spell before touching the dice.

I guess it's in ask opponent / FAQ territory if you're being super strict.

If your wizard can only cast one spell per turn, it's less awful to roll before declaring your spell (but it still seems a bit wrong). If you're rolling for, say, Nagash, and your 12 becomes a Mourngul instead of the Mystic Shield that it looked like you were planning for...

In my eyes, you pick your spell first, then you roll your dice. Besides, that way I know exactly what to hope you roll below!
