Paul Buckler
So, the old way was 1 army with matching basing scheme. So my Dwarves had a scheme, my wood elves, my lizardmen etc. Now we have alliances, so Duardin with Seraphon with Stormcast, the problem I am looking at is tying the bases together. Either I base all the factions in an alliance the same, which I am not keen on, or an 'army' will have several different schemes within it. Any suggestions for teaming up factions and their base styles?
Anodyr
Maybe consider if you have any fluff ideas behind the alliance formed by your factions? My Seraphon and Stormcast will definitely have the same scheme as I'm thinking of (and collecting and painting) them as one army, and I just need to work out my backstory for why they fight together, which will hopefully also suggest a realm/terrain type. My Chaos factions are leaning towards a twisted saplings, bones and rocks theme and I may copy or subtly change the scheme for my Order troops so that they look like they are fighting in the same realm. Another option you could try is to consider how the ground cover varies within even a small area, and then have each faction lean more heavily towards one aspect of that terrain. E.g. In a volcanic landscape, you'll get everything from loose ash, to mounds of cooled lava, to glass-like rocky shards or normal scree. You'll also get dark, fertile soil with some hardy vegetation. If one faction emphasises jagged glossy black rock on their bases, and another has loose earth and plants, or lava cracks, they can look and feel like distinct basing styles, but could also be made to visually work together when allied. Just include a few lava cracks or plants amongst the sharp glossy rock bases of faction 1 and a few jagged rocks dotted around faction 2. Hope that helps. Stevewren
You could certainly take the GW approach where they base everything the same. However I like the idea of varied factions. All my Aelves are getting matching basing, my chaos all match (unless you are south coast judges...), and my empire and duardin will be the same. Boiling Point
I like having the seperate factions of the same army using the same basing. But it's entirely up to you. Although, the three you mentioned, Stormcast Eternals, Seraphon and Duardin, in the fluff are most likely to be found together in the Realm of Fire or the Realm of Metal.
