We actually don't know their full situation at that time, but he didn't sound like he was in desperate need as well. I also remember his first interview when he talked about his time as a designer from GW and how he got to create his own company...at that time, he also said one of the reasons was the sudden death of his colleague and realization that you have only one life and should enjoy it with your dreams as well. Money wasn't the only motivation why he left, to me...certainly one factor, though. I didn't state otherwise I've said in the abstract that A) He was poorly remunerated given the context of who he worked for and the profit it provided for them B) Poverty is an affliction, not a personal failing C) An *Individual* earning sub 20k a year who has to pay for bed and board can afford little else in the UK. That's it. And these things are all true.

No one attributes the crimes of capitalism to it. there's several famines in India on the feet of the HEIC and the Raj for example. 2
Gaz Taylor
+++ Mod Hat On +++ Okay, we’re not trying to right the wrongs of the world and things are going around in circles now. NauticalSoup
To wheel back at least tangentially to the topic at hand, while it was disappointing to hear about the poor compensation of a key creative, it wasn't altogether surprising. Not to suggest it isn't bad, but underpaying people in this space is business as usual across nearly the entire entertainment industry. Much more surprising and upsetting to me is the managerial insanity and dysfunction that obliterated Sophie Williams' career with GW. I link it below in case anyone missed it.
yukishiro1
I dunno, that sadly sounds extremely standard to me too. Malice is fairly rare, but disorganization, nobody taking responsibility for fixing a situation, dysfunction, and a general lack of care is sadly not in corporate environments. And what we know of GW is that it's super chaotic from a management point of view. Last minute decisions to axe products or change them in big ways, totally un-joined-up thinking between departments, botched attempts to change warehouse procedures, etc. Everything we know about GW is that it's a total mess organizationally. GW acted really badly, and sadly, that's the way a lot of companies operate. Btw, It seems that someone on GW tries to compensate their workers:https://www.theguardian.com/business/2021/jul/27/warhammer-maker-games-workshop-hands-staff-5000-bonus-after-lockdown-sales-surge It's nice and all, but imho, that's band aid. Imho, the main problem with this type of jobs is their remuneration, basically, that their salaries match their jobs. Sunshine
Back on topic; I find it interesting that Games Workshop do not like staff discussing their salaries with one another. The practice keeps salaries lower than what they could and perhaps should be. In general, firms have been moving away from this model and many have introduced pre-defined pay boundaries. However, I guess this is harder to implement in creative industries due to the nature of the work. Sophie's story is a sad one and unfortunately it reeks of mismanagement and incompetence. I wonder how widespread it is as Games Workshop (if it is widespread at all) as this could indicate a major cultural problem there. I will not start a discussion now, since this really is not the place. But if someonr wrote something similarly revisionist about my home country's (Germany) "glorious" past.. I'd do my best to get them banned. PS: Please note that I'm pretty left-leaning and have nothing against communism and socialism as concepts in general. Just the way in which they were partly realized in history. Edited July 28, 2021 by Maogrim
