Deciding on an army (Race/Faction)

Usually 3 main places for me:

1. GWs site to trawl the pictures of models.

2. Google image search to trawl for conversions of the models I do not like the standard look of.

3. To a wiki to look into some lore to find a story element to supplement the elements making up the visual guideline for the army.

There are no hard rules though, as inspiration can come from anything and anywhere, so it all depends on what sparks it and how it takes off from there.

I look at the pictures on the website, and look at army list or discussion threads on forums for the armies I like the look of. Perhaps I learn a little fluff which makes me like them more or less. The big thing I look for is people giving a general discussion of how they play and I think does that fit my style or could I learn to play that way.

The big thing with choosing is definitely the models though, if you don't like those how can you have fun spending hours and hours painting them?

Models but play style is equally important.

I'd agree that painting what you like is important, but if you don't enjoy the mechanics you will quickly grow tired of playing the game. Possibly losing interest in finishing your project as well.

Do you prefer to have few elite models, horde of "ordinary" soldiers or a mix of both?

Do you want centre piece models? How important are to you? What in my mind makes AoS so much better than older fantasy, is that almost every new faction is going to have access to monstrous sized models. Some like having monsters, others enjoy having a unit that specialises in slaying them. Perhaps both tropes appeal to you equally.

How do you want to approach the game? Aggressive or control? Do you enjoy having more support or hard hitting tools (imagine your general and his lieutenants, what do you envision them doing on the battlefield)?

A mixed force of different factions is possible but keep in mind that GW published multiple ways to play AoS. I'd suggest you and your friends are on the same page what game mode you want to play.

Going into your local store is always a good idea as you can see the range of most armies to decide which one you like the look of. Also you can look in the display cabinets and see if there are any that like in the flesh so to speak.

Generally speaking go with the rule of cool and collect what you think looks the best. That will keep you motivated to buy, build and paint.

I would probably buy the Generals Handbook and the 4 Grand Alliance books and maybe the new battletomes Beastclaw Raiders and Sylvaneth, and finally if any money left over one of the Realmgate Wars books.

I would read as much as possible , decide which army you like the most then if you need the money, sell the books which you don't need/aren't relevant and use the $$ towards your new armies models.

This book is a great place to start. It has good value too. In the book you'll find introduction to the game, the faction fluff, nice illustration of each grand alliance, a great battle report, and guide on how to collect, build, paint and play. For me if I really want my friend to play AoS, then I'd buy this book for him/her as a gift.

#1: Models I enjoy looking at, if they're not I am probably never going to finish painting them.
#2: I enjoy the play style of the army.

As for you, since you haven't played the game before and it will be really hard to know what kind of play style you are looking for. I would just pick the army with the coolest looking models. In either case before you have played a lot of games to know the ins and outs of your army and the game in general you will probably feel like the army you have is underpowered or just bad.

Thanks carlund. Yeah I am torn between Stormcast and Sylvaneth.

I think Stormcast are just about winning. (Always a sucker for Angelic kinda stuff)

I can only say, "I like what I like".  Usually it is invariably models and or paint jobs that attract me.

However... When my Silver Tower arrived.  The only model I loved the result of when I had put it together was part of the faction I currently hate most in Age of Sigmar.  It was the Fyreslayer hero and I'm terrified of painting him and messing it up.  So on the strength of one model, I have been endeared to an entire army.

Malignants and Grand Allegiance Death have attracted me from day one, but now I know that may just be paint jobs.

I will probably burn for this, but I am not fond of the new Sylvaneth models. I like the feel of the Spites and Furies, but that's about it.  Each of the component parts of the Alarielle giant monster look brilliant (Hero and Beetle) but as a single piece they do not work together for me. The Kurnous hunters look like they got lost on the way to the latest series of Gundam, but that may just be paint job. After all, I didn't think anyone could make Sigmarines look cool, but 40pluswargamer managed it.

So I will have to end with, I like what I like.

For the Emper....Sigmar! Only in Death..I mean Only the Faithful!

Starting a new army, and in the hobby in general, is a very exciting time! It's also pretty confusing/intimidating. As mentioned, the best way to start is to take a look at Games Workshop's website and look at models https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Warhammer

If I were you, I'd really be looking at Start Collecting boxes. While the $85 price tag might look steep at first glance, they are actually a really good deal and a nice way to start. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Warhammer?N=102351+4294965073&Nu=product.repositoryId&qty=12&sorting=rec&view=table&categoryId=cat440002a-flat

Let us know if there are any in particular you are thinking of starting (Ironjawz)!

I think for me in terms of looks and feel. I'm going with Stormcast :) doesn't mean I won't collect others but for my first army I think I've made my choice :)

They are a strong all around force. Only thing they don't have is wizards but that will change a some point

Yeah that's the only thing I'm a bit sad about. As I like fantasy vs 40k for that reason! Magic!

Well the stormcasts use divine magic which has his advantages and disadvantges. Stormcast don't really trust any wizards that does not come from sigmar's own forces. The purpose of the battle mage faction is to function as wizards for sigmar's various forces.
