AoS International Team Tournament – London Gatwick May 25-27th 2017 (S.T.D TBC)

Myself and a buddy have taken it upon ourselves to run a four-man team AoS tournament next year at London Gatwick, catering for up to 20 teams. We have visited a number of locations to inspect them for suitability for such an event and have homed in on a really nice, up-market hotel (with a Spa :/) located very close to the airport. Provisional details below:

The event will be a 5 game, 2000 points GHD tournament as is commonly understood at the current time, with additional gaming opportunities on the Friday night, and arranged activities on the Saturday night.

The event will be inclusive of two nights accommodation, breakfast, lunch, all gaming.

I attend tournaments and have a very clear understanding of expected benchmark costs for entry, accommodation at the usual Premier Inn/Travelodge, and eats. My benchmark is @£100 – this is what we are aiming for per person. Like virtually all other tournaments, it’s a not for profit affair.

Motivations for location: I pass through Gatwick every day, I also have some contacts in Events in the area. Gatwick is 15 minutes from the M25. But primarily I have chosen Gatwick as it’s the cheap short haul hub of Europe, and this surely presents our European (and other!) cousins with a viable opportunity to compete against other domestic and International teams. Once arrived there will be very little extra travel to factor in, unless you combine it with a trip to Central London, which is 30 minutes away by regular train.

Motivations for venue: I am a big fan of hotel based events; everyone staying together to socialise, not to mention the ease of travelling to and from a hard days gaming. I think this is also quite widely popular. Combining all elements – hall hire, food, rooms - brings with it nice discounts which make this opportunity possible. It’s an ‘all in’ event, which is fairly unusual for the UK.

Motivation for system and theme: My game is AoS. I travel to tournaments and really enjoy the scene and the people contributing towards that scene. This weekend could very easily be run as a 40k or possibly even an Art de la Guerre tournament, but obviously I have extreme prejudice towards AoS! There is a paucity of team events, even with so many obvious little cabals out there! The International theme is a natural extension of the location. In the dearth of other accolades, we will take up the mandate to crown a team ‘International AoS Champions’ J (and / or British Champions) – as we anticipate multiple UK based teams.

Motivation for date: This date doesn’t clash with other big event timetables (so far as we can know). It’s not in the School Holidays so costs are reduced. Hopefully the weather will be nice, as the function suite has its own terrace bar ;)

What’s next: Next week I want to sign the contract with the venue. In the coming few days I will be reaching out to you, the AoS public, to quick-litmus test whether this will be viable. I would super appreciate any comments and merest indications or expressions of interest. To get the best deals on flights and transport I want to be able to provide a very long window of opportunity.

That’s it, laid quite bare – I really hope people can pick up on this and help it to become a real thing, it doesn’t need much of a push, probably only a raft of opposition will derail it J

This sounds epic.

The South London Legion will be at least entering the one team!

My one question would be because we are so local could there be a ticket excluding accommodation?

thanks

rob.

Hi Rob, glad to hear it :)

As for just tickets - to be honest I hadn't considered it up till this point. On one hand the facilities come as a package, on the other, yes - you guys are just up the road... We have a long time to figure it out and I'm sure we will.

Hi Tony - ha all that spiel and I got the dates wrong - it's Friday to Sunday. It might well be the week before, will firm up over the next week, but whatever - it will be fri-sun

Certainly interested, as mentioned above non-room tickets would be cool. It would be frustrating to attend the closest large tournament to myself (50 minute drive) and end up having to pay more than I do at some other events where I am able to stay at friend's places.

There's a consistent message coming back from London based peeps which I'm taking on board. Cheers for fb.
