Future expansion of original warbands?

Recommended Posts

Out of curiosity,  what are people's thoughts on the likelihood of future expansions or releases featuring the original WarCry warbands?   For example some additional specialist profiles, or even just some additional basic cultists to flesh out all the weapon options with alternate sculpts.

If we look at Necromunda, each of the gangs has received some additional releases or upgrade packs, beyond the initial release.

Any chance we could see something similar for WarCry?

Could be possible but I'd doubt it.

The Warbands feel fairly "fleshed out".

I'd vouch that we're more likely to see more warbands and expansions over building up the original content, similar to Shadespire.

Necromunda operates on its own. The bands released for it work only in Necromunda and nothing else in the 40K world. There might be one or two very rare cross over models, but by and large its a unique game.

Warcry is a bolt-on game where all the models are fully legal in AoS and indeed its likely we'll see as more warbands are added those units will be not just usable but desirable outside of Warcry. At the same time those armies also appear in Warcry - in deed the warbands have already been reinforced with options from Chaos Slaves to Darkness being able to be added to your warbands. Like the Darkoath Warqueen.

So whilst there are some losses in being a bolt-on game there are also some great gains to be had as well.

To be fair, just about everything in the AoS games realm is better than 40K. Things like Underworlds and Warcry working in the main game is something you'd expect. In 40K, I expect every customer unfriendly measure to be in place and defended by its players. Though Genestealers do work in Necromunda as a gang.

Let's see how exactly works the Catcombs expansion. Depending on what exactly it is we could see something like Blackstone Fortress expansions or even something like the Kill Team expansions.

Between the warcry campaing system and the Anvil of the Aphoteosis I believe they have some cool stuff that could be fleshed out.

It's not really got anything to do with "unfriendly customer measures". Necromunda is a remake of an older game by the same name and it was always a game that was part of the 40K lore but not part of the battlegame. It's a side game with its own models; own lore focus and its own themes. In fact right now its getting a lot of fantastic attention. It's just a game where your'e playing the bottom end of society - you couldn't put marines and necrons and eldar into it in great army numbers; they'd win every single time. Heck if they release the upper-classes as a faction one of them could be a match for a whole gang.

So the lack of cross-play isn't GW being unfriendly its simply because they really are two different games and model lines; the only link is the lore.

I think it's possible at some point that we'll see more specialised 'mercenaries' for the Warcry warbands.

This way it avoids the problem of integrating them into Age of Sigmar (as the rules are currently written with those boxed sets in mind), as they can essentially become lesser characters in the greater Age of Sigmar armies.

In particular none of the original warbands seem to really have 'spellcaster' type models. So it wouldn't surprise me to see some kind of spell casting expansion come to Warcry at some point, and with it comes a bunch of new spellcaster models for the original warbands.

that point gets solved getting spellcasters from AoS.

The game sits inbetween Necromunda and Killteam, since it allows both custom warbands and borrowed ones.

I believe this is done deliberately, so anything designed for Warcry can work somewhat in AoS and anything needed for warcry can be borrowed from AoS without needing to create specific models.

Regardless of that, I think thematic "leader" characters for the warcry bands would be nice.

More elaborated "challenge boxes" could be nice too.

There are a lot of expansion posibilities for the game! I can't wait to hear more news this saturday!

This is exactly what I thought about, and "hope" they implement at some point.  Or perhaps a named special character for each cult, that personifies the unique playstyles.

While it's true you can get spellcasters from proper AOS factions, I just think more unique casters or spells would be nice, and present more options for AOS gameplay as well.

It seems like Warcry is doing really well, but there's only so many times they can release new warbands and ask players to play with those instead of the ones they already know and love. I would bet we see an expansion for the most popular 2 or 3 warbands from the original six, but not any time in 2021.

I like the spellcaster or additional "hero" model idea that some people have raised. Every AOS port into warcry has multiple options at the leader position, which sometimes really changes how your warband plays. Releasing a few alternate leaders with hero rules in AOS would add a ton of replayability for the Warcry factions with access to them, without needing to be a big release.
