Is the Mortis Engine worth it?

I love the model but am not sure if it is worth it for play.

It should be amongst Nighthaunt nowadays as can work well with their builds which target bravery... plus it looks Nighthaunty

Everytime I've considered getting one again it's been for Legion of Grief and, again, in lists which target bravery. 

I've not had one now though since AoS1 so probably not the best placed to comment.

It's a decent wound sink, and the healing/plus to spell casting is nice (though a Corpse Cart has better range if all you want is a +1 to cast, AND is 100 points cheaper), but I think it's real strength is being huge and spooky looking. I used to use mine to bait players into focusing on bringing it down, even though it's really not much of a threat unless you're fighting a low bravery faction. Getting the best use out of it's once per game explosion requires positioning and luck; when it works it's fantastic, and when it doesn't it's a bit of the bad feels. The same goes for the ranged attack and its spirit host attack, so the unit as a whole is very swingy. 

For Rule of Cool though, absolutely!

I have always thought the mortis engine could use the same option the celestial hurricanum and luminark of hysh get, something like paying a extra 60 points and it gets a full necromancer added. perhaps even a master necromancer with a extra cast.

Yeah, it really wants to be an herohemoth with a couple casts of its own.  As is, I don't really think it's worth its points, but it's not so bad that you'd be shooting yourself in the foot by fielding one anyway, particularly in legion of grief, blood, or sacrament.  Don't much care gor it's battalion though.  Not after the recent changes to arkhan which really push you to field him in ossiarchs or not at all.
