Beginner trying to find an army

Heyho, Ive already posted in the Introduction chanel where I started talking about the topic. But Ive seen a quite similar thread here and it seems like this part of the Forum is a little more crowded. If this is considered spamming please let me know, Ill delete one of the posts.

Ive been a Warhammer and 40k   collector for like 10 years now on and off. I never really got to play a game in the past but since Ive moved to a city for college I decided that its finally time to change that. After AoS was realeased I was one of the many people who were disgusted and since then I mainly got into 40k models and list building. I a week ago or so I watched a video about all the factions in AoS in 16mins which kinda got me interested in checking AoS out, since I still prefere the models and the world to 40k. But yeah wanting to get back into it I was now presented with the question which army to play. Since I was a collector in the past I dont really have too much of a coherent army. I looked through the web store and same like in the past I really liked all the Undead factions. The new Nighthaunt are so cool and I like the Bonereapers as well. But hell yeah so many other cool factions as well, so Rule of cool didnt really got me started. Since I kinda want to get competitive at some point I started looking at power rankings and tournament lists (bcp and aosshorts) so I guess I have a general idea of how the armies are build now, The 16min video also gave me a really quick rundown on what to expect but I still cant really figure out what the best call is.

So since theres a lot of things I dont know here are the things I actually do know:

- I like big eye catching stuff. Big models are a blast to paint and look at, so Id really want my army to have monsters and cool looking characters that I can sink some time in painting. I dont enjoy soley monsters tho, looking at BCR fe. I think Im kinda missing the diversity there.

- I like to have some options to choose from and having a diversity of units on the table. Like I found Idoneth to look really cool but I couldnt find myself to brin only eels to the table.

- I also dont like Hordes. As much as I love Skaven and Gitz I sadly wont be able to paint 120 battleline units. I like to spend time on individual models. But this means I dont mind elite I guess.

- Playstyle wise Im a tank main in mmos. I dont like shooting to much, its okay if its supporting but I couldnt stand a ranged centric army. So yeah I love meele combat, hitting like a truck or throwing a bucket of dice. I also value magic and priest a  lot.  I think super fragile isnt for me either. I dont necessarly care about being slow and grindy.

There are factoins that I have on my radar now, like I love all the Undead stuff, I like the Slaves and Khorne ones, Cities I love because of diversity, Fyreslayers look awesome,  I like quite a bit of stuff looking at Stormcasts. Orcs look cool as well. But I always found some problems looking at the rather small sample size of lists. So yeah if you could lend me a hand figuring things out Id be really thankful!

Thanks for reading stay healthy and have a nice one

Just a note, many users, once they are used to the site, often surf on the "All activity" tab (top right first link under the Activity dropdown"

https://www.tga.community/discover/

This shows them all the most recently updated content on the site, including new threads and posts to threads. So whilst a "section" might appear to get more traffic, its often just that its got threads more people engage in directly. Titles are important too, so sometimes a welcoming thread that has a question later can get overlooked by some.

My vote is for Kharadron. Very interesting models with big centerpieces, and not a horde army by any means.

Honestly ogors was the first team that came to mind for me or fyreslayers (although they are very samey)

If you want tough, elite or elite-ish infantry focused armies with a focus on killy or magical heroes and little to no shooting,
of the Armies you have suggested it seems like the Ossiarch Bonereapers would be a good fit for you - only 1 shooting unit (and a big centre piece at that), with decent line infantry and cavalry to form a tough core to the army. Their terrain, artillery, monster, Arkan, Mortarch, and Nagash give you a range of big centrepiece models to choose from, however as I understand it there is a bit of a learning curve to the army - not an insurmountable one, but if that doesn't seem like something you want to do whilst also learning the game,

My suggestion would be to second the people suggesting Ogor Mawrtribes. Their base unit are tanky, hungry brawlers, and you have a wide range of specialist units and monsters - and could even go for the Beastclaw Raiders style of play and play nothing but centrepiece models - monsters supporting monsters - if you only wanted to paint up a handful of models. (If you want to wait a month or so, its looking like the Sons of Behemat will also scratch this itch)

Thanks for all your suggestions ❤️

- Kharadron I dont really enjoy the models and they look rather ranged heavy

- Mawtribes I dont hate, but I already have quite a collection of them and I think Id rather dabble into something new

- Fyreslayers and Bonereapers are my favorites so far. For Fyreslayers the big Dragons seem to be kinda underplayed and the models are looking pretty similar which Im kinda afraid of, Bonereapers its just hard to fit everything you want into one list xD But yeah those two look pretty promising.

- Ironjawz/Orcs also look interisting and theyd be like place 3 or something

Welcome @RQItami

People have listed some great suggestions and I thought I would add a few more.

Slaves to Darkness and Beasts of Chaos are really fun monster heavy armies that feature loads of infantry options. All of the God specific armies are good options in that regard as well. Cities of Sigmar is a really great army for big centre pieces and you can build around them and with a few smart purchases make a completely new army with a different centrepiece model. Stormcast and Cities expand into each other in a natural way and I think are a good investment army if you are interested in the long haul. Sylvanth are another cool option as you can mix in Treelords and Kurnothi models to your liking.

I would also argue that you can happily play Idoneth not relying entirely upon Eel spam. Just because something is the most viable option doesn't make it a requirement. I play a pretty mixed list and it works fine I think of my list working somewhat like a Brettonian army with the Namarti being more elite versions of peasants. I also think that Idoneth have the coolest centrepiece models in the game.

Ossiarch Bonereapers (OBR) sounds like just what you want.

They are very elite, have many and varied centerpiece models (Katakros is gorgeous), and are probably the best meat grinder in the game (tanky and still fairly killy).

Their main weaknesses are speed (which can be mitigated with RDP usage, battleline banners, and the run and charge faction) and being shot to death (still figuring out what I can do against this lol).

As mentioned in the other thread, but this

is basically 100% the Alarith Lumineth. They are pretty hard to kill with -2 to rend, often also minuses to be hit, and can have an additional 5+ ward, and the mountain spirits hit very hard. You also have important mage-priests (Stonemages), and can turn up the magic part if you want with additional units, endless spells etc. Shooting and fast units can be added if needed.

But if I remember correctly you said you don't like elves, and if the models and/or lore don't appeal to you, it's always better to stay away from a faction. But the play style would really fit with what you are looking for.

Well then how ‘bout a skaven elite force consisting of 20 or less models😉

nothing is impossible with us-us!😜

for big models we have Stormfiends, rat ogres, Doomwheels, and the hellish abomination known as the hell put abomination.

Wan’t something big as your general, that looks cool, have a look at thanqoul and boneripper, or go the Verminlord way of deceiving your friends

Thunderlizard seraphon could be an option. Seraphon has a lot of different units and strategies and can be just about anything you want it to be. The coalesced are rather tanky with scaly skin reducing the damage of attacks by 1 (to minimum 1), making ogors, ironjawz etc cry as you reduce their output by half a lot of the time!

With thunderlizards stegadons become battleline, so you can really focus on big dinosaurs if you would like to. The big dinos are also the newest and best models, while some of the other models are a bit dated at this point, which is the biggest downside I think, to an otherwise strong and flexible battletome.

Thunderlizards Seraphon is exactly this, Stegadons (with some variants), bastilladons, carnosaurs and troglodons. The main battalion to use is flexible to playstyles and is great for mixing in some Kroxigors or razordons/salamanders. Going for saurus or skinks for more battleline is also fine and the army can be fun to paint.

Seraphon got it all, unless you play a boring salamander/skink spam list, but that does not seem to fit any of your criteria anyway.

BIG DINOSAURS!

Big fast dinos, they can hit very hard in melee and have various complementary ranged weapons, bastilladons can lay down some firepower as well and Slanns are super efficient and powerful magic users, who also provides command points for more tactical options during the game.

Did I mention BIG DINOSAURS!?
