Starcast - The Thread

Yep Kroak is amazing. With the amount of CP I think concussors are a good shout definitely.

With reroll 1 to hit and reroll wounds on the dracoths on 4 guys their output becomes quite something, and denoying pile ins if rolling any 6s can be HUGE. Rolling those 6s to wound for the dracoths is fun too, the look on one of the fyreslayer players face when I rolled 3 6s and he failed his saves just to see me rolling 4, 6, 6 just for those 3 attacks was priceless!

The fact that Kroak is our best unit in the current state of the game speaks volumes.

He is Seraphons too afaik. It's just a strong model (and SC can ally everything).

Yeah, I just feel it shows the sorry state of SCE at the moment, where our units are so overcosted and do so little for the points that an ally is our best bet for winning games at tournaments.

I say give it a whirl, I would miss the Templar (for his pile in reducing axe) in some matchups. Perhaps, though, more libs & the prime add more than you lose. There's no way to guess! Test away :D

Man I am really bummed that Kroak seems to be such a must. Is there any way to replace him with anything, maybe a Lumineth caster? Cause I really don't like the model just aesthetic wise.

It's just unfortunate that he slots so well into Starcast type lists. I don't believe he is so popular in any other SC list.

It may be as strong in terms of spell denial to take Incantors to his points cost. You just will be missing out on a bit of Kroak's damage and CP. I love Incantors.

If you wanted you could trial other lumineth allies - maybe not casters but their archer for instance look promising.

Original Starcast works nicely too, you might incorporate more libs as above, or Prime and 2 dragons even.

I find it productive to test out ideas before getting too excited or too down. The one caveatI'd share now is, given ppl expect a new SCE tome within, let's guess, 6 months, being able to improve results right now with 1 model bought and painted trumps buying and painting say 20 or 30.

For example, I bought and painted 30 vulkite berserkers 3 years ago maybe and had them in a starcast ish list as the WALL OF UNSTOPPABLE MW SAVES. They were GREAT but now they're not worth anything in my lists - new Fyreslayers tome killed them as allies.

I am far more comfortable for Kroak to sit on a shelf for years (I doubt I'll play seraphon - like I doubted I'd play Fyreslayers).

It was very fun and good to play. But im totally dissapointed in Helardor. With his new WW. i literally couldnt do it even once. So im wondering what to take instead of him. I have 110 pts. Im wondering about 5 vanguard hunder for another bodies and distraction or single ballista. But im not sold on her eaither. What do you think?

That is an option, a lord relictor could also be handy, maybe with divine light to really mitigate major threats to the stardrake, which is primarily MW abilities and effects, such as 6 to hit hearthguards with poleaxes doing 2 MWs or similar units.

After facing KO a few times, I am also pondering Protectors to help keep the other key heroes alive...

If you take protectors you'll have to drop 5 Libs. What would you protect with them ? Heroes ? If so yeah, they're quite useful.

I make general reductions, like templar not lcosd, 3x5 libs and kroak to take 10 evocators on foot. Lets see how it gonna work.

yeah my biggest piece of advice for working with starcast lists (any lists) is to change out components one at a time - rather than change a list wholesale.

if you build liberators with doble hammer you got exploding 6s without prayer, and you can give prayer only on Judicators.  The question is : why no one play liberators dual wield?:)

The second list I have in mind.

This one include the Draksworn templar. Another useful object. Less drop and a minor healing and a minor MW input in one turn.

I'll be trying this version this week. I'm not too fond on the previous list with the Umbral Spellportal. I feel I'm paying 130 pts for only one spell causing D3 MW (which can fail). Also, Kroak can cast it multiple time but the portal only allow 1 spell per turn.

In comparaison, the Drakespawn templar always give me another obect and reduce my drops. Maybe trying both lists  will set my choice in stone.

If you own 3 stadrakes, it's surely worth trying: at the very least it will be a sight to behold on the tabletop 🤩 Darren Watson actually discussed the first option in one of the List Diaries episodes of the Honest Wargamer some time ago.

Two things to look out for:

-without castellant (and plate of perfect protection) the templars are actually quite fragile. Only one of those will have rr 1s save (apart from spending a CP, but then again you can't do this against shooting) and you'll have one / two under staunch (unless you charge). Those on a 3+ will die to mass no rend attacks or rend 1 (let alone rend 2). Sending them to charge any melee specialist unit (Mortek, Ardboys, Hearthguard bersekers) will be their death, unless they can delete the unit in one go (unlikely unless that's an MSU).

-very limited ability to "focus fire". Only with Kroak's comet you have a way to actually pick your target, for the rest is all the luck of the roll with rain of stars. This means that you (statistically) will do your boardwide MWs but these might not be concentrated on that one support hero that you wanted to kill.

Oh and I would go for Storm-Winged for the mount trait, it increases the damage of the Stardrake by quite a lot since you can activate it multiple times per turn (movement phase, charge phase and pile-in).

This list is bonkers! I took first place :). The only thing i would change i think is 10 Grandstaves for evocators. I think it could be better.

Quick summary: First game vs my nemesis tzeentch (changehost). Draw. We played only 2 turn cuz we run out of time, if we could play third rund i would win.
Second game vs OBR (Katakros, Arkhan, 100 morteks). Major win. He took first turn and cover about half of the table. I dropped on his back, make charge on 9 with reroll, then killed 10 morteks on his back, win double turn and and charged and killed katakros. He surrender then.
Third game vs Seraphons. Major win.

Isn't the Slann a little bit too fragile? Without bodyguards or FNP I would think he'd be focused very early by whatever shooting is around

And, to avoid double posting, here's also an idea for a "Low magic" Starcast list. I included the battallion in order to have the Lantern of the Tempest on the Celestant

That list seems really frigging cool! What’s Eltharion adding there, because it looks like a lot of fun to play and I’m very interested. Also, is that artifact lantern worth 160pts in the list? I guess it can help vs the “mortal wounds on 6+” stuff out there.
