Warhammer - The Old World

I wonder if this project is not as much « bring warhammer fantasy back » as it is « bring total war warhammer to the tabletop ». A subtle distinction that could really orient the design in a different way than what fantasy fans might want 🤔

IMO, there is a misconception about The Old World and"Fantasy Fans".  My last fantasy game was over 16 years ago and I don't feel diferent from a dude that is just playing Vermintide or Total War, or a girl that is reading the Gotrek omnibus.

I don't know why but some people think that, because they started playing in one of the "true editions", they have some type of right over all other Fantasy Fans, and imo, that's selfish and naive.

As often on the internet, I think it’s mostly that people have very different definitions of the same term. Obviously an oldhammer fan will picture something different than a total war fan when they read « we’re bringing the old world back ». People then get agravated because the most incendiary opinions are the most noticeable. And then it devolves into « us vs them ».

I have no skin in the game personally, just observing that people’s expectations will shape their reactions.

when I said « fantasy fans » I just meant people that want a return to the old school game, I didn’t mean to imply « true fans » or anything like that.

Right,  but I think it would be an important element to the OW game to tone these fantasy elements down (and the historical bits up) to make it more different/unique in style and flavour.

I am probably guilty to see my version of the old world as the true version... if I don't like the ice stuff (because it doesn't fit with my interpretation of the background materials of the old world), I can convert it on the miniatures and ignore/bend it on the background. Can't wait to see if in the distant future the WF-roleplaying game is influenced by the new stuff they are creating at GW.

and on some corners of the internet almost certainly even on the backlash to the backlash to the backlash of this reveal.

My rage and frustration is at the mobile Warhammer Community site. Today's the first day I'm learning I missed out on all this outrage.

It's straight up preposterous.

this is why the wise man just wakes up, opens his browser first thing every morning and just screams incoherently into it for five to ten minutes, you can retroactively fills in the exact details of that day's outrage after you've had a coffee.

Pretty sure I have seen some backlash to the backlash to the backlash of the backlash of the reveal.

I'm angry that some people are angry at other people being angry because some other people are angry! And I'm pretty sure that will make some people angry.

I think WFRP 4e did a fairly good job of maintaining the grimy atmosphere  of the old game while updating it to include the mandatory modern stuff like Karlfranz having a griffon and there being eight colleges of magic etc

Buuuut, so many people have left the team that worked on the bulk of it that I'm a little concerned they won't even finish their rewriting of the Enemy Within (which AFAIK doesn't include the old Kislev bit), before they ever get to fleshing out more neglected areas of the Old World and beyond

This Old World stuff should at the very least provide a lot of inspiration for cross-pollination and fan made material tho

What's the Over/Under on everything we currently have for AoS not getting an update, and everything for TOW being brand new?

Nobody knows the answer, but I can imagine something like:

  • The AoS miniatures that need to be updated are in the pile of "things to do" (or squat after nobody buys them anymore). We already know that they are at maximum capacity of production and there are some new armies in the pipeline so...
  • TOW still has 2-3 years (or more). I expect that the game will be focused on new models and of course they are going to have some type of special characteristics (some of them more magic-special-weird and others more historical look, remember that Fantasy had a shitting monster for a warmachine, a mechanical steed and the catrazza dudes). And I think that all the old ones are going to be handicapped or phased out.

With the old world being a forge world venture (I think that’s right isn’t it...) would they use it in a similar way to heresy?

Looking to make very specific models for many of the richly described characters and units from “back in the day”?..

Also the fact the teaser from one of the previews showed the empire in the war of the three emperors would fit nicely into how forgeworld could tell the story and reveal the merch. Though it’d be interesting to see how the other races got involved as heresy predominantly focuses on humanity and then really space marines at that

I can see the heresy treatment working potentially well in some regards in this manner. I think they first ventured into warhammer with the specialist monsters and the like but surely they could replicate the pattern of what they did with heresy all the better for knowing how that panned out.

Either way I’m stoked, I've played the total wars which is one of my fav line of strategy games on steam, I dabbled with fantasy and now I’m hooked on AOS so more fantasy miniatures or settings of any description is fine by my count!!!

Apologies in advance if I’ve completely missed something already discussed here before!! 🙏

4th edition wasn’t much different from 2nd as far as I could see. All the material for 2nd should work for 4th also. So does the old Enemy Within campaign (being 1st).

As gamemaster I take every liberty to make it my own vision of the world anyway. Everything else is just inspiration to plunder at will. 😄

God, those old models are a thing of beauty. I wish they make a return but I doubt they will. I just hope GWs modern take on the Old World captures the style of the old models.

You don't need to wait for that. There are a lot of models from other companies that are better than the original ones.

Yeah, it's quite obvious now that CA and GW are redesigning Kislev together for Warhammer TW 3 and to have something in that world for these new players to play.

Pessimist me would say that they need it because they'll kill off Cities in a few years.
