One thing I love about the TGA forums is even though we may disagree on things, it never becomes hostile. This isn't a place where we throw words at each other over our toys, we are a strong and respectful community.ย

While I donโ€™t think itโ€™s Fimir.

GW did release the Fomroidย Crusher which is basically a revision of Fimir and no one complain about that one monster being a PR nightmareย

As if anyone cares your right .... It's a bloody game of toy soldiers for god's sake ๐Ÿคฃ

No one cared when Beasts of Chaos were brought over to AoS

No one cared when Genestealers got a new army

No one cared when Slaanesh got updated

No one cared when Fimir were brought into Total War

No one cared when Fimir were being sold less than three years ago.

This narrative that Fimir are some shameful part of GW's history that they're trying to scrub from the records to avoid a "controversy" that has never happened is completely invented by fans.

The simple truth of the matter is that Fimir were a race that never caught on with fans and were mostly left behind as the years went on because there was no reason for GW to keep them around. Beastmen had a two-sentence blurb saying that all the new guys crawl out of the ground to avoid any kind of association with the, again, already abandoned "problematic" lore.

"They throw people in a bog and a fimir crawls out later." That's all they'd have to write. Do they get turned into a fimir? Does a baby fimir eat them and get bigger? Does it summon them from some other dimension? Who knows!

As for their design, you look at everything else in this game and tell me with a straight face that they "don't fit"

Every time a weird new model comes out people crawl out of the woodwork to talk about how great AoS is for wacky and new fantasy creatures but suddenly the first one GW ever made isn't good enough? Isn't the strength of the setting that it's so vast that anything can work and have its fans even if others don't like them? They're like an even more nightmarish monster from the Dark Crystal (and that's saying something) meets Irish mythology turned up to 11. That's Warhammer at it's purist.

I don't think Fimir can support their own army or even that they're going to show up in the new Destruction one, but there's no real reason to leave them behind.

Hopefully this is not only a response to me and my posts - I am sure it is not as there has been a great deal of discussion about the bog-daemons over the last few pages - but on the off; a response.

I really like the fimir and I am still fairly sad I was never able to pick up any of the FW models - they were absolutely stunning and I would have loved to have a small knot of them in some larger destruction force, loping alongside grots and spiders and gargants as part of the semi-mythical "horror of the primal" vibe Destruction can give off. And I don't think anyone (or at least not anyone on TGA, that I've seen) is suggesting there is some active controversy around them or that GW is shamefully trying to make the whole world forget that the Fimir ever existed.

Just that I doubt GW would want the headache of having to unpack the somewhat meme-ified version of the fimir that now exists in the wider public sphere by making them a focus of a large/main game faction, especially one designed to sell 3rd edition.

ย

That said, I really hope they keep doing things with the "fimir design space" as it were - I have always been of the opinion that the fimir feel much more at home in smaller-scale games, where the "threat hiding in the mists" and small raiding forces for one or two victims is a much bigger threat - HeroQuest was a natural scale to first introduce them, and maybe earlier editions of WFB (or indeed 1st ed AoS to a certain extent) where the armies were smaller. Perhaps that's why I have always thought they made such excellent villains for WFRP - they are strong, large, and have magic, and their ideal targets cap out at a regiment or village in the World that Was; a pretty powerful boss/one shot villain for a small band of Warrior Priests, Dwarf artisans, and a Rat Catcher.

As such, I hope we keep seeing the nods towards something... neolithic and "other" appear in AoS - we have seen the Fomorians, who draw upon the same inspiration as the Fimir and who look awesome/I would love to see get a few other little twists, as Ogroids have (and, like the Fimir, even first turned up in a specialist/boxed "skirmish" game). There are hints of something primordial and cyclopean that destroyed the Gargant Temple in the King Brodd lore. In these places - on the peripheries, half-hidden, is where the Fimir work best, imho.

ย

That said, if the "boghobgoblins" or whatever this faction ends up being have plastic versions of the FW Fimir as an elite infantry/troll type unit - the last dregs of a forgotten and ancient sorcer/warrior culture in the deepest fens - well then good. But as you say, I do not think they necessarily have the scale of design potential (as written now) to be a stand alone faction - we already know how people feel about visually shallow armies (poor Fyreslayers).ย

Ehhh Iโ€™m not really HOPING for it to be Fimir, and would prefer it NOT to be them, but I ainโ€™t gonna throw a hissy fit if it is. Then again, maybe GW are gonna do something unique with them to make them interesting to me. Hopefully weโ€™ll find out in circa ~3 online previews xDย

I always appreciate the candor, my friend. I actually am really grateful that you have often encouraged me to speak more directly regarding the hobby.

I will confess I was being somewhat factitious, as I am willing to criticize aspects of this hobby in my posts. I thought that was clearย as it was following a pretty blatantย complaint about not trusting GW regarding Kragnos' release.ย However, I prefer to focus on the things I enjoyย rather than dwell on the things I don't.ย I have studied formal criticism in literature and film and I am a big fan of Bazinian critical appreciation, but I am well versed in utterly trashing media objects I dislike*.ย However, I am mostly here to enjoy the discourse and conversations about a hobby I enjoy and slip away from the sort of academic analysis that has become such a large component of my life. I also find that @JackStreicherย is a little better versed in this hobby, both in terms of gameplay and lore so often I find my opinion less informed. But it is still a note well taken...

Now turning back to rumours, do you feel like we might get any Tzeentch goodness crossing over into AOS with the upcoming Thousand Sons/Grey Knights preview?

*I had a rather large rant about power armour and homogeneity in 40k that recently got swept away with the critiques of the the Sisters of Battle preview for Warhammer fest.

While I also appreciate Jack's posts a lot, I don't think your opinion is less valid even if yours was "less informed". In the end, both are opinions unless you state facts. If everyone thought like you, we'd have almost no posts in here. ;) But I understand now where you're coming from - it just clashes with my abrasive waysย ย ๐Ÿ˜‡, where it's cool if people bluntly say what they think. I guess I know why I'm such a big fan of flamers now, it makes total sense.ย

Anyways, I didn't realize that there was a GK/TS teaser until like yesterday and frankly, I'm not entirely happy as this means the rumour engine is most likely for 40k.ย ๐Ÿ˜‚ I LOVE Thousand Sons (and especially Rubric Marines) since the day I've first seen the now classic sculptย by Jes Goodwin (seriously, I still have 20 of them)ย butย at the moment I'd rather get the IMO kinda missing mortal side of AoS Tzeentch - simply because the TS range has everything I've ever asked for (it took 20 years but I got every toy I ever fantasized about in 40k)ย while AoS Tzeentch could use a small wave of mortals to make the army "complete". However, this should not be taken as me complaining - more stuff for TS is always very welcome; I'm sure GW will get more of my money!

Wow ok, what a day to catch up on.

Really sad to see how Covid messed up the release schedule. Be'lakor's massive ground breaking victory, that Stormcast souls were now being blocked from returning to Azyrย has just fell flat on it's face. I mean that's HUGE, this was Sigmar's best weapon and hope to fight back and this hope was now shattered, only to then straight away say, oh no problem, we got a new armour now.

That's not a problem with the lore or progression but it obviously would've been more impactful if there was an appropriate time delay between this progression.ย

I honestly wasn't expecting to just see the Stormcast. I need to watch the Preview it must have been 10 minutes long haha.ย

That said, exciting times indeed. Really like the new Stormcast. I think the new Paladin heads aren't quite right but definitely like the stature of the new guys. The stocky stature of the original is what made the Stormcast feel powerful though so waiting to see how the new ones look next to some baddies.ย

The new character, lovely wing sculpt, absolutely love the artwork.ย

Bring me Destruction.

Honestly think it's going to be evil swamp plants or something, I can't see it being goblins as I can't imagine sigmar sending his elite new soldiers to fight some goblins In a swamp, it's a weird matchup.ย

Plus we have the comment from alerielle about life running rampant and being a problem and that artwork from the rulebook of the angel lady surrounded by what easily could be a mass of mutated thorny roots. The swamp itself grabbing soldiers is also pretty spooky.ย

ย

On a personal note though I still haven't bought into AOS, just want normal humans or dwarves :(ย

Lauka Vai, the Mother of Nightmares. Once a monster-hunting knight with principles even her enemies could respect, a fateful encounter with the magics of Tzeentch saw her transformed into a raging beast ever at odds with her disciplined nature. Now regarded as the queen of the Avengorii Dynasty, Vai leads her cursed kin into battle with the skill of a warrior and the strength of a monster.

That's... interesting. So her transformation has nothing to do with her vampirism? Unless it turns out the monster-form was a way of staving off the Chaos corruption. I guess we'll find out.

Also looks like Gravesite Markers are still a thing:

This is very interesting indeed!!ย

At the bottom of the article it also says more reveals coming this week, maybe New Model Monday is continuing with a Destruction model sneak peek!? No word on a Preview so I'm guessing the 22nd and 29th respectfully.

If I'm not wrong:

3+ save, 6" movement, 10 bravery ย with 5 wounds.

Wizzard. Can cast 1 spell and unbind 1 spell.
Unique spelll: CV5 to enemy (?) units within 6". Ad +1 to hit when friendly units target that enemy unit (?).

Seems good to me

I suppose it might be too much to hope that they're both 40 USD. Probably 60 like the Mortek Guard, but it would be nice if Zombies only went up 2 dollars for such a great update.

ย

And I'm really hoping that Lauka novel is good. As far as I'm aware, she's the first AoS original vampire to get a feature book. Hopefully she's got some character too her.
