So they've done plastic Sisters of Battle and are bringing back Fantasy? I'll just be over here waiting on Codex: Squats.

Gotta say, this is far more interesting than anything set in the age of myth, which was really only ever written as a pre-age of chaos backdrop for all it was fleshed out in AoS 2.0.

If it's anything like old WHFB I won't be playing it (rules, size of armies, etc) but it's good to see the old setting get attention, it really did have tremendous depth. It also makes for less of a glaring hole for anyone who's coming at it from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Vermintide or the eventual three Total War: Warhammer games. I'd be surprised if it wasn't the massive popularity of the last two that gave them the push to get on this.

Warhammer Total War was stated to be three games, then a full stop. This could coincide with the later parts of Warhammer 3, to cash in on people that are fans of WHTW, but are at the end of their game.

Then again, GW might have looked at the cashflow generated by Warhammer Total War and decided that the series may continue.

I think this announcement might be a bit to early. With something big like this, I think it would be better to give out as much information as possible from the word go, as it intruduces a lot of uncertainty.

Not necessarily against it though, I've been thinking AoS Legends might become some sort of specialist game eventually. I'll wait and see, I likely wouldn't transition back to the old world, even for an aditional system, but I always appreciate nice bits and conversion fodder.

Slann team for Blood Bowl!

When they were hopping frogmen, ok. But now? Definitely OP. They could just make a touch-down with their minds.

I mean at this point whose counting down to the end times of AOS cos it seems like that will definitely happen at some point now. Probably relatively soon.

Also this means no chance of new cities of sigmar models within the next three years for sure.

Yeah, that's why they teased new hysh-related AoS releases at the end. Sure.

lol

Yeah, no. GW has pushed AoS massivly this year and they increased their profit as much as in an 40K centric year. So AoS is, most likely, selling very well.

I had long imagined some big, expensive leather-bound book called "Legends of the Old World", or something, with Old World lore, maps and warscrolls.

However, the key point was that it would be on round bases and use the AoS ruleset, and thus allow round-based miniatures to play double-duty on both games, where applicable. Of course, these warscrolls would be totally separate from mainline AoS, with no cross-contamination.

With the square-base teaser, this sounds more like rank-and-file Old World fantasy though, which is beyond surprising.

There is a lot to unpack in this announcement. As someone that has continued to enjoy WFB & loved the first three years of AoS (this year has been ok, but I'm not impressed with many of the releases), I'm not actually as excited over the announcement as someone who loves WFB should be (Though I'm not going to shout and rant and rage on facebook either!) but it was better than I'd actually expected it be and the announcement & tease today was far better done than yesterdays.

The good-

  • The old world is back!
  • We might finally see the battle for blackfire pass get its release! (That book looked awesome before they canned it!)
  • I'm still happily painting old world armies which now might see new models (and I have just enough to paint up at least 3 more models in this unit before the release! 🤣 )
  • More models for all the games!
  • Hoping to see reprints/remakes of classic books/campaigns, with modern quality books & terrain!
  • New fiction set in the old world! I'd love more WFB horror to come out! (Hell, I'd even try my hand at writing some!)
  • Hopefully a return of old (or at least new versions of) kits they got rid off, which have no good or easy alternatives (High elves, Tomb kings)
  • Mordheim might come back!

The bad-

  • We just don't need it. The old world lives on in plenty of other games and model ranges. WFB rules are cheap 2nd hand (or even cheaper than that!) and there was never anything stopping anyone from continue playing it.
  • I'd hate to see them sweep away all the fan mad continuations & armies books put out since 2015.
  • It seems a little obnoxious to announce this not long after putting out CoS, as it was a bit of a refugee camp for peoples old world collections!
  • Announcing it three years in advance seems way off. Only reason they might be doing that is that they have (finally) noticed that others have filled the void WFB left and they want to try and stop some of that money going into those other games, possible before those games gain even more popularity (and it will be harder to get people to come back)
  • It's going to break up communities even more than they already are. Already arguments are breaking out between people that hate/love one game or the other.
  • Once again GW is catering to the loudest (and often most obnoxious) parts of the fan base (Or at least they appear to be, which is enough to give validation to these people. I still think they don't really care what people ask for but are happy to let them think that when they release something as it looks good on them)
  • Backwards character placement. There will be a whole host of characters (& places) added to the old world from AoS lore. I wasn't keen on them adding so many characters from the old world into AoS, but people do seem to enjoy it & for the most part, those that did return made sense (as much as sense can be made in these universes!).  But I can see it not working as well in reverse.
  • It will be just like the good old days- Only far more expensive!
  • Less resources pumped into AoS
  • Less money going into AoS over the next three years (Why would I buy the fancy new AoS army next year now, knowing I might not want to use it in WFB two years down the line) If AoS is the "most successful fantasy game ever", then why are they not concentrating on that. I've been saying for the past year it sounds like no one in GW really cares for AoS and they were just making the most of what they had been left with.
  • GW tried this before- trying to support too many games at the same time. It didn't end well and has taken them to know to bounce back from the culling of their lines.

The biggest thing I take away from this announcement is that GW do everything they do for money, but don't seem to care about the ramifications on the community. As hobbyists/a community are first loyalty should always be with each other- we are after all the ones we game with, talk too, hang out and get to know. But I know full well that all hell is going to break loose over the coming weeks/months/ years. Anyone with strong opinions has it it in for the other game and it's going to make the both games unpleasant to talk about online. I think this might be the time I final ditch both forums & social media for good and continue to enjoy the hobby in my home. I already grumble quite a bit about releases and I could see myself easily getting caught up in rows over painting/bases/games and taking away time from my actual hobby.

One thing though, what if they actually look at the entire chronikle of WHFB and not just the narrow timetable of old WHFB. We could be seeing stuff like Aenarion, The Siege of Praag with Magnus the Pious and Asavar Kul or the War of the Beard. That actually would be exciting to me.

Don't forget they also did a Codex Genestealer Cults which had been longer in the margin than any of the above.

You're right. We can now explore older events. Sigmar's war with Greenskins. Skaven attack on first Black Pyramid. Maybe we could even get armies that existed in lore but never on tabletop or those that disappeared - Amazons, Kislev, even Albion!

I love AoS (both game and lore) but sometimes I was sad that I missed old WFB.

I've just started an Albion army, using warlord games models. But I'd go mad for some new plastic Albion giants! I love the old metal ones but they are just so small now!

I feel like this announcement has destroyed the solid ground AOS seemed to be on. The old world was dead AOS is the setting now. To go back on that now is just odd.

If you have an army with old models pre 2015 I think you will be having to switch settings back to the old world in a few years time. Only a matter of when not if that they squat the entire old world range. Every freeguild every dispossed beastman and dark elf will be going in the next three years. I would bet a lot on it.

Again. They said Old World will be for AoS like 30k for 40k. 40k still exists.

I disagree entirely. We dont even know what kind of game it is, whether an epic size mini model game or using movement trays again.

Besides, AoS has grown into its own thing with a strong and healthy/friendly community. AoS is fine and will continue to grow in the next two years

What will this resurrection of the Old World have on the factions in AOS? Wouldn't it be logical to have the classical armies in the Old World and the more out there armies in AOS?

If your favourite faction from the Old World isn't in AOS yet the chance of it appearing in it's old form probably went down. It looks more likely that if it appears it has seen further development and tweaking to set it apart from it's history.

Anyway more models and ranges means more kitbashing and converting potential so I'm all for it! 😀

Exactly! If some Tomb Kings miniatures will be back it will help me with my desert free city conversions.
