Naval Battles

Recommended Posts

I've been working on some naval battles rules for an upcoming event I'm running and figured folks on here might get some enjoyment out of them.  Also, I'm curious as to what sorts of rules other folks use (or would use) for naval battles.  Mine revolve around keeping it simple, and have worked well in my test battles so far, but I'm sure there are a lot of different ideas out there.

Bonus: My mini-armada of scratch-built ships making a beach landing!

Just wanna know where you got the boats from! I wanna do something like that for armies on parade when warcry comes out!

also, can you attack the ship too in this or just the unit?

You just attack the units in this one, the ships are basically just moving terrain.  Also, the ships are scratch-built from foamcore.  I used this tutorial (with a little modification for scaling) and it was really easy.

I never did something like that so I don't know how easy it is! But I got till October to try at least! Thanks.

what materials did you use? I am a bit lost on how to make the foam so detailed as well...

@Acid_Nine The main building material is the posterboard that is foam coated in paper on either side.  After you've cut it into shape, peel the paper off and you've got a nice thin sheet of foam.  The detail is all done by etching patterns in with a ballpoint pen.  Also, in the tutorial, he uses white glue for everything, but I found that it was easier to glue it together with hot glue, but use white glue to coat the whole ship before painting.

Oh, Thank you! I watched the video with the sound on this time and I am really eager to try it out.  What did you use to cut it out and how did you modify the size of each ship?

@Nacnudllah where did you get thebackground and boxed for your rules from?

I got the background from someone's AoS homebrew resources folder ages ago (it's a bit dated now compared to their new format with all the circles and arcs).  The boxes are actually just powerpoint.  I make a text box with beige background and brown border, and I have a brushed metal image that I cropped into the little diamond shape.

I used an x-acto blade to cut it out.  I actually ended up hand drawing my own template for the ship because his was so huge.  The design is so simple that it was an easy change to make.  I used my models as a guide to make sure it would hold a 6-man unit on 50mm bases as well as a 10-man unit on 25mm bases.

Thanks for the info, and the new hobby channel to watch! It inspired me to get some foam core and work on my own stuff to practice before the real thing!

That is actually so freaking much better than Malign Sorcery in terms of add on/addition to the game! Thank you very much! I also see a huge load of potential on how this could be expansed :D Allowing Flying Units to Move across Water, expanding by some Faction Specific Rules (Faction Terrain getting "tied" to the Flagship, Kharadrons getting their Airships expansed by Garrision Rules so the Unit inside can still Act etc.) or even special Magic Lore that allows some navigation sheningans. Also I love the comeback of the Naval Theme. We need Dark Aelve Corsairs back as Major Faction in the game, together with Vampire Pirates and some evil Chaos Dreadfleet :D

So I finally ran the event that I was making these rules for.  I learned a few important lessons, and am making some revisions to the Crew capacity rules.  Anyhow, here are some pics of the ships in action!

We had a few multi-ship fleets (my Nurgle longboats and the Dispossessed steamboats), two enormous ships (the Slaanesh ship and the Ogre ship), one player who used a single large floating island as a ship, and one Idoneth player.  Having a single warship with a whole army on it proved very potent, so I recommend restricting crew capacity to one Hero, one War Machine, and one other unit.

@Charleston Now that I've got some experience with the naval rules under my belt, I'll tweak them, add some more content, and compile it into a campaign book.  I'll post it in this thread when it's ready.

Good to hear you're tweaking the rules! How do you feel about adding ship board weapons? Maybe only making it so they can target other ships without a massive penalty? Or use different ammo like grape shot or chain shot?

Ooh, I like that idea.  So my change to crew rules is that a warship be able to hold a garrison of one Hero, one War Machine, and one other unit (any type).  I was thinking about making a generic ship's cannon that ships could default to for armies that don't have war machines to take.  Having specialist ammo upgrades could be a really interesting addition to that.  I'll post some updates here once I've got some more details hammered out (I'll aim for sooner rather than later).

I was thinking of this today at work as well, and there may be a need to have some wound counts for each warship, or at least size catagories or something. That way you can target the warship with said cannons or or something. I may think of something myself one of these days...

It's something I've thought about as well, but it seems like it would feel bad to have units get sunk without getting their saves (and re-rolls, and adamantine cloaks, and so forth).  Call me soft, but I try to avoid feel-badsies at all costs.

The sea is cruel that way, especially in the mortal realms 😉

could be be avoided though, by making it deadly terrain and halving movement and taking penalties to attack rolls depending on the save value of the unit. I dunno, it could just be fun to see ship combat as well as boarding actions on the high seas!
