The Problem of the Free Peoples and the Freeguilds in Age of Sigmar

Honestly FW could produce a LOT of upgrade kits for AoS, but so far GW and FW don't seem to know what to do with FW esp for AoS. They formed a dedicated AoS team and then after the alternative stormcast heads came out they disbanded the team. It's hard to say but there seems to be both politics and production pressures on FW which is resulting in it jumping around and unable to settle down. That AoS was a game originally built to just shift models (no real game) and that its been 4 or 5 years or such since it launched and over that time FW has produced 1 dragon (that we believe started life in the End Times of Old World) and 2 sets of alternate heads kind of shows that AoS is not all that important.

It's a huge shame because AoS is such a ripe picking ground that FW should have no problem thinking up ideas and selling models.

The choice for Freeguild sets is also abysmal, incomplete guards, or incomplete gunners with armour that does not fit the rules, and generals that all have loadouts that do not fit the choices people make, with one being a naked fanatic (which does not mesh with the save they have), and a dragon without a warscroll.

Give us heads, cloaks, arms with alternate weapons or shields, make gorgets, alternate legs for the shoeless guy, heroic bannermen, flamboyant musicians, dramatic unit captains...

Of course I'd agree, although to offset the lack of currently available models, I hunt for old empire stuff. My general on horse is Ludwig Schwarzhelm.

He's not a general, he's part of the old Empire command retinue, but he's just sold with the general.

Ah yes, I now see this. That general has all sorts of character though, if I get myself a Halberd guard so I can use the other one, I'll be quite tempted to buy them.

It would have been clearer if they gave the relevant warscrolls for download though.

The FW team is now the design team for Bloodbowl, Necromunda, and other specialist games. That's why they aren't producing stuff for AoS and really haven't been doing a ton for 40k. GW has incorporated them effectively a silo studio to handle a range of small games.

I really would prefer new Freeguild models, that incorporated different races within units (separate boxed units that can be mixed on table with cohesive rules anyone??). And it would be great to not have the same floofy holy Roman Empire look... but unfortunately we will probably only see the current boxes repackaged with circle bases, and some metal models made plastic. While needed, this book isn't for new players.

Whether they keep the HRE look or not, the poses need to be changed because as of now they are designed to be regimental-fit. Personally I don't see how every single Mortal Realm could end up with the same medieval Europe look for their Freeguilds, but its the lore to table disconnect that always happens. I do not think "just convert your own!" is a proper answer either, since that requires an even heavier investment in both time and money unless GW decides to make proper conversion kits for AOS.

It's hard for GW to make new molds for Free people.

Either they make something different from what they did, and it does not fit with the theme (as well as risking alienating existing players), or they make molds fitting the old ones, but not the direction they want to go in with the entire game. If they do make new molds, it'll be a bare minimum effort to keep a full line.

Not that they'll try. I suspect a major reason for this book is the chance to toss out old molds without making new ones by combining factions, or by giving you options to patch the holes the retired models give (probably by filling it with Stormcast, they put three Stormcast on the cover, as opposed to two figures that actually needed a battletome).

I think the simple answer is they don't have to so they won't.

That is the simple answer, and I am actually okay with that if they reattach the lost limbs of the faction. They couldn't at first, because then the older armies would be more rounded than the new ones, but that's no longer an issue, so now I expected to see two aelven armies and one human army, with the disposessed being a bit of a wildcard.

That is not what the tome seems to imply though.

With them coming out with warbands from every realm for WarCry do you think they might do something similar for non-Chaos humans in the future? Maybe a re-imagined Mordheim with treasure hunters from every realm that could be used as Freeguild in regular AoS?

I hope so, set it in the ruins if Excelsior, the areas that haven't really recovered due to the events of the City of Secrets.

Introduce Skaven, Fyreslayers and Khadaron Mercanaries and you'll have a fun time

...high and the low aspects don't really have any direct impact [on aesthetics]

I completely disagree. They can have shared elements, but the high or low fantasy RULES of your world can easily be reflected in an army's aesthetic... when godly powers are infused with lightning bolts into god-like armies of radiant unpractical gold never seen before, sprouting angelic wings in a world where they can traverse across fantastic realms none of which are any longer reflective of our own world... That is absolutely reflected in the aesthetic of the Stormcast's design and it is absolutely reflective of high fantasy elements.

However, the line between high and low elements is so absurdly subjective that to debate it at length would be a waste of time.

That'd be neat. To have a huuman warband for Warcry for every realm, or something of the sort. I doubt we'll ever see it, but I'd buy them just so I can have them. You'd be able to explore a different take on the wandering tribes of Ghur, on the druids of Ghyran, on the alchemists and golems of Chamon, the Egyptian themed secret societies of Hyish, a wandering fire circus in Aqshy, House Delaque in Ulgu... If they could have each Necromunda clan look distinct, I'm sure they could make it so with the non-Chaos human warbands. Enough Stormcasts, please.

As for more high-fantasy aesthetics (meaning, generally speaking, more of an Arthurian-Lord of the Rings-DnD version of High Middle Ages, with the chainmail, the early plate, the longsword, the tabard... There's tons of games and settings like this. Tons. Let's keep what made the Empire original and give the flagship Free Cities their Renaissance flair. Some people may not like it, but well, these people do not have 3500 points in magnificent, feathered and foppish Imperial miniatures.

I could be wrong, I just think Freeguild should and will have a new aesthetic.  To be it's own thing and not just the "Empire in the Age of Sigmar".   No more  codpieces and pantaloons please. And new minor races.

The guy on the cover of the battletome is the classic empire greatsword model though.
