New Years Hobby Resolutions 2019

My spirit is willing, but not my body.  Having two kids under 4 seriously kills doing something each day, every day.  I had a project where I wanted to paint a Stormcast skirmish warband by doing one figure a day, and that lasted three glorious days.  Now it's been 6 months and the last figure isnt even started yet.

I have 2 teenagers and also a 3 year old and a 5 year old with Down syndrome.  Couple that with a time-intensive career and it is hard to get much time for anything at all.  I synpathize with your position.

But my main issue is thinking I can model as ambitiously in regards to big army projects as I could 10-15 years ago.  I need to scale back my projects to individual smaller chunks and just concentrate on finishing them.

Oh, the pain I also feel.....

Right now my goals are two-fold, at least for the Fantasy side of things.

-Paint the remaining three Shadespire Orruks, a Gore Grunta, and three Savage boyz for my Orruk skirmish collection to be completely painted, even though I can already field a good size force that's fully-painted.

-In the same vein, paint three Stormvermin, a Grey Seer, an Ogre (a mercenary addition), and maybe a trio of Gutter Runners to make my Skaven warband collection field-able as a fully-painted force, even though there are some half-dozen Clanrats and an Ogre Leadbelcher also waiting in the wings for the same force but they are not assembled yet.

I’m going to finish the Maggotkin army I’m currently working on and “try” not to expand it any further it currently is. I still have to build and paint Tamurkhan and two War mammoths that I’ve been sitting on for a couple years.

I also plan on beginning work on the massive Nighthaunt army that I’ve acquired this past year.  I bought the Soul Wars boxed set, Black Coach, and hero boxes.

What can I say other than I’m a fan  good looking kits!

Here were my goals for 2018:

1) Complete my chosen hero for Silver Tower, the Lord Castellant. Done!

2) Paint: 3 Flamers, an Exhalted Flammer, 3 Screamers and a Herald of Tzeentch - Almost Done! (Working on the Herald at the moment)

1261584306_1(3).jpg.fe03eda834689f1ea6a8adc4189b7639.jpg

3) Complete all of the heroes from the base set: Mistweaver Saih, Fyreslayer Doomseeker, Knight Questor, Excelsior Warpries and Gryph-hound, Tenebrael Shard and the Darkoath Chieftan

4) Finish my Watchtower terrain piece for Age of Sigmar

5) Rebase and reorganise my Empire army into a Mixed Order army.

6) Rebase and reorganise my Ogre Kingdoms army into a Gutbusters army

Stretch goals:

7) Paint my Nobleman’s house (Chapel) terrain piece

So, I might have been a bit ambitious! I did paint some extra stuff though, a Chaos Lord for my future Tzeentch army, two Chaos Warriors, an Azyrite Ruins set and this guy, a Freeguild General:

1333074784_1(2).jpg.e17d047c55a0c542d58556d74739f975.jpg

For 2019?

1) Herald of Tzeentch for Silver Tower

2) 3 Freeguild Archers for Skirmish

3) Archeological dig site terrain set, including some tents, crates and some treasure chests to use as objectives

4) Freeguild war camp terrain set, including command tents, camp fire, pickets

That should be quite achievable for me, we will see how we go!

So in 2018 I set myself some hobby goals that I wanted to achieve by the end of the year, most of which weren't realistic (like finishing all my little projects from the last year) in the end I scored 4/9 of my goals; but I came away from 2018 with a satisfied outlook on the hobby. Going into 2019 I set myself a more realistic list of hobby goals (one of which is to post on the TGA more often as its a great tool for us hobbyists) and throughout the year I will be posting my updates on how Im doing. My main aim regardless of how many goals I achieve is to come out of 2019 with the same outlook on the hobby that I did in 2018, a positive one.

So here's my list =

Painting =

  • Paint all shade spire warbands.
  • Paint all tzeentch models in my pile of shame ( 2500pts)
  • Paint an army in a month
  • Have all painting for an event done at least a month before, no Friday night painting in the hotel room while friends are playing games.

Reading =

  • Read a black library book.
  • Read a codex/battletome every month
  • Read a full rulebook.

Gaming =

  • Never voluntarily take the double turn at an AOS event (2 Dayer)
  • Take an underdog army like slaves to darkness to an event.
  • Win 3/5 games at two events.
  • Go to 5 events.

Hobby =

  • Use the TGA more often
  • Post 4 #WIPwednesdays on twitter in a row
  • Paint 8 pieces of terrain
  • Win a best sports award.

15 goals for 2019 all of which I feel should be able to achieve and it gives me something to aim for at the end of 2019, even though I've only just started I look forward to posting updates as the year rolls on.

A quick update on my hobby resolution at the end of January, painting wise I managed to paint the ironskullz shadespire warband which was great fun, only having to paint a few models for an army that I wouldn't normally paint or play was enjoyable. My tzeentch commitment I managed to paint a chaos sorcerer lord which is a great model and 10 pink horrors, those were abit of a drag and I found it took me a week just to paint the silver although that was one of the final stages but im glad I haven't got anymore to paint for a while.

Reading wise I read the disciples of tzeentch battletome which was actually quite a good read, I really like the fluff on the blue scribes and how the arcanite cults  operate within the cities of the mortal realms and the idea of an orgroid thaumatage being teachers still makes me laugh abit.

On the 20th on Jan I took part in a one day AOS event run by the purple sparkly unicorns which was 1500pts, 3 games matched play event. I took nighthaunt to the event as its what I've been running since June last year, I played Dave from sprues and brues podcast in the first round and had a cracking game of border war which ended in a win for me. I won the second game aswell against slyvaneth  in focal points but sadly lost against legion of nagash in the last round I ended 7/20 which im happy with; I also went to the underworlds grand clash at Warhammer world with the ironskullz boys which was  a big learning experience, I ended on 2 draws and 2 losses not great but my hopes was only 1 win (one day)  but that's event 2/5 this year as part of my hobby goal.

And finally hobby wise I feel like I am using the TGA more often but im not quite ready to cross that off, I have been posting #Wipwednwedays on twitter (@DodgyRoller for those interested) mostly about the shadespire warband and my tzeentch stuff I am currently on week 3/4 so that's one I can scratch off next month, terrain wise I've been helping paint terrain for the purple sparkly unicorns (@psunicorns on twitter) painting rock formations from foam which has been great fun in preparation for a 2 day event in July called march to war 4 (check the events page for details).

So that's my January update and  while I haven't managed to cross anything off the list a lot of what I have done are part of a larger goal which I don't see me doing until later in the year but I have enjoyed it and I really do look forward to next month.

I'm not doing too badly at one month in:

I've managed to get every work in progress model assembled (except for two breakages which will be a pain to fix), and have sorted it all out so that I have a rough plan as to what order I'm going to paint things in!

I'm planning a narrative campaign to do with my group, so that should be starting fairly shortly.

Finally I now have the starts of a Necron Army for 40K, not really relevant to this forum, but does indicate that I'm able to shake my elf obsession.

So that's my January update and  while I haven't managed to cross anything off the list a lot of what I have done are part of a larger goal which I don't see me doing until later in the year but I have enjoyed it and I really do look forward to next month.

Februarys update is nice and  easy one this month,  painting wise I've been busy painting ogres for a throne of skulls at the end of the march so I haven't really had the time to paint any tzeentch or shade spire but once the ogres are done I'm right back on it, speaking of ogres I have painted 8 ironguts and 6 bulls atm but the rest of the army is 50% so I've still painted a lot (just nothing for my hobby resolution).

Reading wise I started reading the idoneth deepkin  Battletome which I've found a lot more enjoyable than the tzeentch. Their whole story is great being brought back into the mortal realms by teclis, then being forced to live underwater and more importantly how they have survived by harvesting souls is awesome, not sure what I'm going to read in march but I'm feeling like a 40k codex is next up.

Gaming wise I haven't been to any events in February but I am planning on going to the AOS  throne of skulls at the end of march at Warhammer world, with the goal of scratching a few things off; like never taking a double turn and going to 3 events which I'll finish off in April.

Hobby wise I have posted  4 weeks of wipwednesdays on twitter covering a long slog of painting pink horrors and starting my ogres so that's something I have crossed off the list, a nice and easy one to get me going but I have found that it has given me a lot of motivation to get  a little bit of hobbying done every few days which is great, I am definitely using the TGA  more often but I'm not quite ready to cross that off the list. Now terrain wise me and a few friends have started running a few small one day events and obviously we need terrain for that, in the last month I've helped to build and paint over 20 pieces of terrain; however seeing as the terrain is not for me I'm not crossing that off the list until I've painted some for myself; having read the idoneth deepkin book I'm really looking at the gloom tide shipwreck.

So that's all for February I didn't get as much as I wanted to get done this month but at the same time this is a marathon not a sprint, I am enjoying reading more and painting terrain so at the end of February I have achieved 1/15 goals. Bring on march.

15 goals for 2019 all of which I feel should be able to achieve and it gives me something to aim for at the end of 2019, even though I've only just started I look forward to posting updates as the year rolls on.

At the end of march already it seems like the year is flying by, along with my hobby challenge. As you can tell this month I've made a dent in my hobby resolutions I recently went to a throne of skulls at Warhammer world which is always fun as its a lot more relaxed then your regular tournament, at the end of the weekend id crossed two things of my list, first off was have an army painted at least a month before the event. I took my maggotkin of Nurgle all of which I painted for Warhammer achievements at blood and glory las November, so no painting on the Friday night which is sooo nice.

The second thing I was able to achieve was to go to a 2 day event and never voluntarily take the double turn...... which was definitely fun for me as I lost 2 games because I couldn't take the double turn, overall I thought not taking a double turn was fun as there were moments when I could have really gained a he tactical advantage but gave it to my opponent which made the games harder for me but I enjoy a challenge, as I said I lost two games because of it; but a nice easy goal achieved and a throne of skulls is the best place to do these sort of things .

Another goal I now feel like I have achieved is to use the TGA more often which as I write this I definitely have done again nice and easy but until the beginning of the year I never really used the TGA which is just a waste.

So going into April (scary thought) I plan on taking Gutbusters to a one day event me and some friends are running which I class as an underdog army and it will also be my third event of the year which is awesome. We are also finally getting round to building some city ruins for warhammer 40k which when those are finished I will definitely have built at least 8 pieces of terrain so while ive only done 4 things on the list ive almost done another 3, I also read the Idoneth Deepkin Battletome which was more enjoyable then I thought although I did start it in February so I need to read 2 books in April to make up for it, I'm looking at blades of Khorne and skaven to read in April.

So onto 2019.
I have 4 big factions left from WHFB that are all (well) over 2000pts and since AoS dropped I started 4 new factions because I really like the 1K 1,5K games. (+ 3K Beast of Chaos a mate keeps here, 400pts unpainted)

But after several games my interest drops a bit, I need a bit more options to change the lists around to keep it interesting. At the same time the small factions are very close to having cleared all backlog. So my goals.
1a. Finish the backlog on Slaanesh, Stormcast, DOK & KO. Also finish the backlog on my main faction of Ogors.
1b. Add a box to every  smaller faction for some extra options. Maybe with  some Path to Glory action. But only after 1a is done.
2. Get my converting on with some Skirmish Warbands :D (which is hard for the stormcast models with everything being push fit)
3. Play more games.

For personal reference
Slaanesh: 2x Spawn, 5 (old Knights), 5 converted warriors, 3 chariots, Manticore conversion, 5 seekers, 15 Daemonettes, 1x (Old) Archaon (this turned out te be a bit more that I originally thought)
Stormcast: Soul wars + 3 easy to build
DoK: 5 Khinerai, 8 Witch Elves (metal)
KO: Frigate, Navigator, Khemist
Ogors: 20 Gnoblars, 1x Overtyrant, 1 Converted Butcher with Cauldron.

So 1/3 of the year done... how’s everybody doing with their resolutions?

Personally I’m a real dent in my backlog. And only fell into buying things once. Still not really in my character to finish things when it loses my interest. But DoK is only 8 models left, Skaven 11 models. Bought 6 stormcast and immediately painted them up. But also 9 KO thunderers the moment I finished the KO backlog 😂

so all in all not unsatisfied but need to pick up the pace a bit if I want to finish this during the summer. Maybe I’ll put up a 20 minute a day regime for the next two months. On the gaming side a couple of games fell through on account of the Young one. But that’s to be expected.

So what about the rest? Everybody on schedule?

Coming to the end of April and I'm starting to find things are getting harder to cross off my list, mid April I went to a local one day event run by the purple sparkly unicorns and I took ogres that I've been working on for awhile, I consider ogres to be my underdog army as I came away with the wooden spoon award, I found that while taking big blocks of ogres looks cool hitting on 4's really hurts; later in the year id like to add some bigger things to my ogres like a giant or thunder tusk but for the meantime I'm going to wait until ogres get a battletome.

Ive also started reading the blood angels omnibus part 2 but as I'm a pretty slow reader it might be a while before that gets crossed off the list, On may the 4th I went down to Warhammer world for the age of Sigmar heat 2, I took stormcast and managed to win 2/5 games with a third being very close. That means that ive been to 4 events this year only 1 more and ive been to 5 events which is another goal achieved.

I still feel that all the goals on my list are achieveable but after recently starting Fyreslayers I need to get them done for future events this year before I can properly start painting shanspire warbands and my disciples of tzeentch backlog, hopefully may will be a productive month.

So April has been a busy month for hobby  I've managed to paint an army in a month, a lord of the rings army specifically the army of the dead with Aragorn Legolas and Gimli as well, its been a long time since i've painted any lord of the rings and it was really nice to have a break from painting any age of Sigmar. I also went to a one day event that my local club ran with my gut busters again and this time had some more better luck and won a game but that brings the number of events i've been to this year to 4 just one more and I've done my hobby goal of going to 5 events this year.

Reading wise ive started reading the blood angels omnibus part 2 which I'm really liking as I'm a massive blood angels fan boy, age of Sigmar wise ive read the Fyreslayers battletome so I'm sticking to reading a battletome each month, next month Slaanesh.

Now that I write this update it doesn't seem like i've achieved that much but its been a busy month of mostly reading and a bit of painting but as long as I'm doing little bits I should achieve a lot in the coming months either way this hobby resolution has been a great motivator.

That sounds pretty good to me!

I haven't posted in a while since May I think but my hobby resolution is coming along nicely, back in July me and a few friends ran a 26 player 2 day AOS  event which scratched off 2 challenges. first was to win 3/5 games at an event (I borrowed a friends flesh eater courts army) which has been eluding me as I've really taken a step back from caring about winning  this year, the second challenge I crossed off was to win a best sports award which is always difficult to do especially in this community where there are very few people who don't deserve the award and getting 4/5 favourite game votes was soooooo amazing, I have to admit moving through the year and going to 9 events so far this year I was concerned that this challenge was one that I wasn't going to achieve so when it was announced that I had won I was over the moon.

So moving forward I think painting wise I'm trying to paint shade spire warbands with contrast which I have to say is really coming along nicely as I've painted the skeletons and the tzeentch warbands in 3 days, the issue I see now is I have 2 events coming up for AOS in November that I might try to get my tzeentch painted for to try and get that done but painting tzeentch takes a while........ maybe contrast can help.

Reading wise I've been reading a Battletome a month now since the beginning of the year which I'm loving this month I have read the beasts of chaos Battletome and they are more interesting than I first thought even the army appeals bit more to me now that I've read the narrative,I have also picked up the war storm book from the realm gate wars to read but I haven't cracked it open yet. In terms of reading a rulebook the recent release of war cry has given me a rulebook that isn't 200 pages long; perfect for my kind of reading.

So overall my hobby resolution list is looking pretty good so far the only one Im not so sure on is painting my tzeentch army but as I said I have contrast now so that will help a lot.

Nice topic :)

2018

For me, 2018 has been an amazing year!  So much hobby crammed in that I've almost needed to take breaks :S  The start of the year was focused on getting together a Legions of Nagash army, which I'm happy to say I completed and then ended up incorporating a few Nighthaunt elements in it to build it up to 2000 points for Blackout.

Highlight of the year was winning my first Golden Demon at Warhammer Fest - completely unexpected and still shocked.  That has shaped quite a bit of the rest of the year too with October, November & December being given over to an entry for the Winners challenge that they run in White Dwarf.

2019

More of the same!  I think some of January will be needed to finish the WD entry followed by assembling Blackstone Fortress.  A few friends are planning on getting a Necromunda campaign going so I'm going to need to finish off a gang for that.

I want to put in a Fantasy entry into Golden Demon, which I'll probably need to start off in February to stand a chance of getting it done.  I'd also like to start a mixed Destruction army alongside my brother with the intention of being able to use it for doubles events.

Event wise, all being well I'll be at Blackout again and hopefully at Blood and Glory.  The usual mix of Warhammer Fest & Open Days, with an 'Eavy Metal OSL Painting Course thrown in there.

On the "New things" front, I really want to start messing around with Zbrush and doing some 3d-sculpting.  I also want to up my game when it comes to my brush work - don't get me wrong, I'm not unhappy with my painting ability, but want to try and reach that next step

So just a review for this one I feel!

White Dwarf Golden Demon Winners entry - completed and was lucky enough to be given a double page spread for it!

Blackstone Fortress - assembled but not yet played.  I want to paint up proper bases which means models aren't glued on.

Necromunda - Gang painted up but not until October.  Managed to get featured on GW's "Necromonday" FB page!

Golden Demon - I put my Megaboss and a unit of Skullreapers into Golden Demon on the fantasy front, got a pin for my Skullreapers but sadly Megaboss didn't get anything.

Destruction army - big fat no on that one!  I've still some Ironjaws and Gutbusters in the cupboard if I get round to it.

Events - Blackout 2019 and WHAchievements 7 both attended with a brand new Legion of Grief army I didn't intend to paint...  Also did the 'Eavy Metal OSL course and a Cult of Paint Foundations course over in BiG, these have really helped push my brush work over that "block" that I had hit.

ZBrush - not a sausage on this one.  Would still like to get into 3d modelling and I think in today's environment there's even more potential, but need to find a big enough block of time to start it off and then keep it up
